Why the everloving fuck did I just realize the reason that Wybie's grandmother let Coraline into the Pink Palace was because the other mother was going to go after Wybie next and allowed her to move in essentially sacrificing her in her grandson's place. That's why she was surprised when she met Coraline and saw she was alive.
This movie is very much about perspective. Coraline sees everything from the perspective of a child. She just moved and misses her friends and is very lonely, she doesn't want to eat vegetables or wear boring grey clothes, she just wants to have fun outside and is trying to add a bit of magic into her life (using a "wand" to locate a well). Her parents don't have time for her so she feels unloved. But her parents are trying her best and love her very much, they're just busy at the moment. The mother was in a car accident and is still wearing a neck brace which in the us likely means a ton of hospital bills, they just bought a new house and moved which had to be expensive. The parents are both working to finish their current project which has a very near deadline. They're overworked and they have no money or time to cook, to go into the garden, to play with Coraline. When they finish their project they start having time for her again, they buy her the gloves she wanted, they no longer seem as dead inside. From a child's perspective (Coraline's perspective) this must have seemed arbitrary - like her parents stopped caring about her and then, once she saved them, started caring about her again. But from an adult's perspective it's clear they were just going through a rough patch and they loved her the whole time, they just didn't have the time to give her the attention she needed.
True, and thinking about this is causing so much pain to me. Every movie that shows things from a child perspective while still showing how the parents struggle makes me think about the time when I was a kid. I was a very good kid, if to compare with many other children I've seen, but I still had my moments of greed, of learning about life hardship, boundaries etc. And I never threw tantrums when I wanted something (my parents told me that, so I take it for word, I wouldn't remember myself), but my parents apparently always felt so guilty when I would ask for something that they'd save up to buy it for me. And as any kid does, I would play a few weeks with the toy and then move to another toy, or to drawing, or to playing outside. And for some reason, I feel so much guilt (I did as a kid, and I still do now) for leaving some toys and never playing with them again. It's my parents' hard work after all. After learning how hard it is to save money in adult life, I felt even more devastated. I know that this is just what toys are meant for. Toys are meant to bring happiness and be played with until they don't serve their purpose anymore. But I still cry every time I think about some of my childhood toys that I left almost untouched because I cherished them so much I wasto afraid to break them or make them dirty. I remember feeling even angry at my toys while experiencing all those conflicting emotions... And I don't remember my parents ever guilt tripping me or anything over things they'd gift me, so I don't know where this irrational sadness comes from. Maybe it was from seeing the struggles my family was going through that I was realizing by myself the worth of those beautiful things I had. Sorry for the trauma dumping, this comment evoked a lot of burrief emotions. This feeling always comes back time to time...

Yeah, this movie is fantastic. Also, you're right about the hand being able to reconstruct itself and eventually get out of the well. Thats intentionally open-ended.
I enjoyed the end of the movie because of the change of perspective, yes, but even more than that. In the beginning Coraline was miserable because of the way things were, and she's introduced to a world where things are amazing and colorful without trying, but it's an illusion. At the end of the movie, the rest of the world is a bit drab, but she's putting in the effort to make it brighter and more colorful. It's hard work, and it isn't spectacular or showstopping, but it is real and makes a difference. @@leanat8630Maybe, but the other world didnt have a well, it was like her spiderweb. And also she was pretty weak, she needed to eat. Thats probably why she rushed the button-eyes thing. Im sure that for the other kids she was more patient and did more things to convice them when the time came. The last kid was grandma's twin, so she hadnt eaten in a very long time. When she says to Coraline "I'll die without you" thats literal. She was starving. So if the key came back to the same world as her, maybe she was already dead or weak. Also the tunnel is a being on its own, as the book narrates. Even the other mother is afraid of whatever creature it is. And it's totally aware at all times when Coraline crosses over. This could lead to think that the other world is like the inside of that creature, and the beldam is a parasite that lives there and has to lure the food in. Except for the hand in the end, no part of her had ever tried to go through the tunnel right? She could, but she doesn't
The hardest scene they had to film for this movie was the mice circus performance. If you know anything about stop motion, you know it's ridiculously hard to pull off, especially like this.
I love stopmotion so much, the amount fo detail they put on is crazy. And the way they yse different materials is so cool. The flowers on the blossem trees near the end of the movie are made using popcorn. They just painted popcorn pink and red. Popcorn trees. POPCORN TREES
Some cool hidden secrets!! With the tea leaves, you obviously see the Beldam’s hand, but after there is the joke that Mrs F sees a giraffe. Notice that it looks very similar to the Beldam with the shape of the head and legs. There are also several shots of the moon in the other world, you’ll notice that the moon phases are going in reverse each time it’s shown, another implication that it isn’t the real world :)
Something I love about claymation is that with how much effort it takes to make a single movement, none of the easter eggs are just 'mistakes'. They would have to take MONTHS to complete. My favorite is the theory where the lady with the orange hair looking through the window in the clothing shop, is actually The Other Mother in disguise. There's so many theories and easter eggs in Coraline, I was OBSESSED with the movie when I was younger 😂😂
The object Miss Spink gave Coraline is a special item called an Adder Stone. It's believed to be able to see through witch disguises and traps, used as a cure for certain illnesses, prevent nightmares and were generally worn as a charm to protect against witchcraft and evil.
Before i saw this movie i read the book. They actually toned some stuff down. Book is much more intense. Plus there is no wybie so aside from the cat coraline is pretty much by herself facing all this the whole time. Also interesting fact other father has been trying to warn coraline the whole time
Fun fact on the Welcome Home Cake is that the o in home has a double loop inside. a double loop in a lowercase o means that the person is lying. so while Coraline was Welcomed, she wasn't home.
12:55 "What do you mean? She's amazing!" Welchy: Amazingly manipulative... I don't know why that caught me so off guard, but it basically sums up the whole gist of the movie
22:42 This was probably one of my favorite parts, since spiders use vibrations of the web moving to follow their prey as well. Every detail in this movie is just soooooo gooooo!
Btw the main theory is that she never escaped the other world. Seeing the cat at the end being able to disappear is telling us she's not in the real world and the other mother is just manipulating her again :D
Not really. It suggests that the other realm still exists, not really that she's in it. In the other realm everything was made to give Coraline everything she could want, so just the fact of things not exactly being perfect means she's in the real world
@@painmacaroni the cat couldn’t disappear and reappear in the real world, only in the fake one plus just because things weren’t perfect doesn’t mean she’s in the real world. The other mother knows that getting Coraline to believe she’s free from her is making it seem like she’s back home. Now with that Coraline is manipulated into believing she’s safe and the other mother can do whatever she needs from her :D
@Shaea_Q I'm pretty sure the cat did that in both realms. Her being still in the other world just kinda feels.. boring ig. As in the story doesn't have a satisfying end with the story still being open in a way. Her being back in the real world but still being in danger of being attacked and the house and portal still being there feels better than just her being in the other world and going to die, since there's nothing she can do.
There's some early foreshadowing before she goes into the other world: She tells her mom she wants to garden out in the rain to get her mom's attention. The Other Mother offers to play hide and seek in the rain.
Haha Keith David playing cats, that have fuck this shit I'm out vibes. First this cat from the other mother and then husk just dipping away from military vaggie. 😂
The Other Mother is based on her voice actress, Teri Hatcher, who is indeed very attractive. She was a Bond Girl, and played Lois Lane in the long running tv show The New Adventures of Superman. It's not at all clear what The Other Mother is but there's some strong vibes. She seems to be some sort of extra-dimensional predator who returns to feed every 15 years or so, based on the clothing of the kids, and the dates on the "vintage" taffy bowls. She spins illusions to bait her trap, like a spiderweb, and her final - possibly true - form is that of a spider. So, she feeds on children at intervals of several years, she manipulates reality and takes the form of a spider. She very strongly resembles IT from Steven King's movie of the same name (minus the clown theme). She could be a similar creature or even the same species. There's also a lot of dark fairytale imagery - the mushroom rings, the promises and bargains, the love of games, competitions, trickery and glamours, the stealing of children into her world. She could be some kind of unseelie fae or sidhe, a Fairy Queen, famous for kidnapping children and spoiling them with gifts and presents that make the child sick or grow poorly. Wells, and "fairy rings" of mushrooms are often referred to as ways to cross over into Fairy realms, and old houses in places like Cornwall used to have small wierd windows and doors like the small one Coraline found called Witch Windows of fairy doors to confuse and ward off witches or dark spirits. Oh, and the blooming garden? Remember how it looked like Coraline in the Other World? Well, the dead, dreary real world version also looks like a face, but not nearly as nice. It looks like the Beldam.
I like to believe that the Beldam is an old Fae witch/crone who feasts on the deals of the children. It would make sense with Wybie already having a history of water witches. Maybe he heard stories of a water witch stealing away his grandmas sister from Granny, which is why she tried imposed a fear of both the house and the well on Wybie. She, the Beldam, HAS to have them agree to the deal to get the soul, so that’s where I believe it’s a ancient Fae Crone or Hag. Very much like IT, minus the spooky clown I want to punch (but Tim Curry is so nice 😢)

i can vividly remember in grade 2 my teacher had us read the graphic novel for Coraline which was just terrifying. and then at the end she was like LETS WATCH THE MOVIE! and then for like 6 months i was completely convinced i had an other mother and she lived in my closet and i was dead terrified on a nightly basis....love the movie now lol
I love how everything in this film was intentional there’s so many little things and Easter eggs in it. Also like that miss spink and miss forcible are a couple.
I was in middle school when I saw Coraline,I was like 15 when my older brother took me to go see this movie, scared me way back then,I just might rewatch it later lol.
The theorizer has a great in depth theory series that explains the movie’s reasoning for the other mother’s actions and how the movie addresses the book’s true villain
I remember watching this when I was younger. I was terrified by the movie, and it gave me nightmares for a week! Now it wouldn’t scare me that much, but it’s still kinda unsettling to me..
If you haven't read the book, read the book. It's terrifying in a bunch of different ways to the film and I love looking at the two and comparing them as two tellings of the same story. The book is arguably more disturbing than the film, and brings about some really interesting theories to delve into that aren't in the film!
Coraline as a kid scared me as a kid. 9:04 You had them Taxidermy. 9:09 I had a friend in 3rd grade named Caroline. 5:57 The real mom had a neck brace but the Beldam made it look like a turtleneck. Stop-motion is so cool.
Nightmare Before Christmas is like candy corn for me. Every year I try it, and every year I'm disappointed. I want to like it but somehow it just doesn't appeal to me. For stop motion though, Isle of Dogs, Missing Link, and Kubo and the Two Strings are so good!
The first time I watched this film was in my friend's car while we were driving to a theme park. Needless to say, it took us a while for any of us to get back into the mood to ride roller coasters after the movie X-X Since you're down bad for the Other Mother and the Other Mother is a spider... we can count that as another point to Welchy being a furry Also, there's a TH-camr named The Theorizer who made a bunch of videos for theories on Coraline if you wanna watch!
You know what makes this movie worse, it’s based on a true story, it’s about a girl whose house burnt in a fire and her parents died so her grandma took her home, but her grandma wouldn’t let her out of the house and ask the neighbors were confused as to why they never saw the girl, then one day some kids broke in and found a burnt up corpse, the little girl died in that fire and the grandma kept her anyway, ducking creepy
Watching this in cinemas back in August was a truly fantastic experience which my childhood love of this movie was building towards. Yeah, I love this movie a lot and I’m glad you love it too Welchy 😁
My NUMBER ONE stop motion recommendation will always be Kubo and the Two Strings. Absolutely incredible film, and pushes the limits of the medium, and of storytelling.
Finally, a reaction to my favourite movie. The transitions are incredible, all the foreshadowing and tiny details are amazing, and just everything about it is great

LAIKA's first and best imo, though the rest of their catalogue is worth checking out too (Kubo, ParaNorman, Boxtrolls, the Missing Link). I was terrified of, and somehow still really liked this movie as a kid. Also the end credits song was stuck in my head for years and I couldn't remember where it had come from until rewatching Coraline a few years ago. Edit: Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline I think were both directed by Henry Selick so there's the similarity? Otherwise they're from different studios... Also I just saw someone else suggest Fantastic Mr Fox and Isle of Dogs and yesss, those along with the other LAIKA films
As a kid i hated horror stuff until like middle school and yet Coraline has always been my favorite movie. I loved it even when i refused to watch anything remotely horror. I love horror now lmao

Henry Selick (who directed this movie) also directed Nightmare Before Christmas
AHHH THAT MAKES SENSE
@@Welchyand he did paranormal if I'm not mistaken
@@Welchyand paranorman if I'm not mistaken
The hardest scene they had to film for this movie was the mice circus performance. If you know anything about stop motion, you know it's ridiculously hard to pull off, especially like this.
I was so scared when I first watched Coraline when I was younger too but now I love the movie
Fr
Me too!! Now it’s literally my favourite movie of all time.. I have a tattoo of the other mother’s needle hand holding the button key 😌
other mother's behind keeps getting bigger every instance to more resemble a spider
I love stopmotion so much, the amount fo detail they put on is crazy. And the way they yse different materials is so cool. The flowers on the blossem trees near the end of the movie are made using popcorn. They just painted popcorn pink and red. Popcorn trees. POPCORN TREES
The same studio that made this movie (studio LAIKA) also made another stop motion movie called Paranorman! It’s honestly so underrated
I’d like to see him react to that too. It’s a good movie, and I remember it being more funny than scary.
I found the DVD in the $5 bin at Walmart and the way I instinctively grabbed for it honestly scared me.
Paranorman is so good!
ParaNorman is good, but I loved Kubo and the Two Strings and Missing Link.
I feel like Kubo would be a good movie for Welchy to watch, its stopmotion too
YESSS OMG. It might make him cry, it made me and my mother sob LOL
This movie genuinely gave me nightmares. The other mother was horrifying. It's a great movie
If u love stop motion u should definitely watch “fantastic mr fox” or “the Isle of Dogs” both are stop motions directed by Wes Anderson
Fantastic Mr. Fox!!! Omg I need to rewatch all these films in the comments, I'd forgotten about all these stop motion films from my childhood!
12:55 "What do you mean? She's amazing!"
Welchy: Amazingly manipulative...
I don't know why that caught me so off guard, but it basically sums up the whole gist of the movie
22:42
This was probably one of my favorite parts, since spiders use vibrations of the web moving to follow their prey as well. Every detail in this movie is just soooooo gooooo!
YES! You watched Caroline!!!!!! BTW the black cat is voiced by Keith David, which is also the voice actor of Husk from Hazbin.
David having a mild crush/fear of the Other Mother is exactly what every girl who watched Peter Pan 2003 went through with Captain Hook
13:26 is the most traumatic part of the film for me. Dear God...
8:58 pls tell me there are meme compilations with this man! His reactions are golden
Btw the main theory is that she never escaped the other world. Seeing the cat at the end being able to disappear is telling us she's not in the real world and the other mother is just manipulating her again :D
As a cat owner I don't believe in this theory because cats can just do this stuff
@@godabandonedthistimeline yeah cats can disappear into thin air, sure xD
There's some early foreshadowing before she goes into the other world:
She tells her mom she wants to garden out in the rain to get her mom's attention.
The Other Mother offers to play hide and seek in the rain.
Damn Welchy looks so good with his hair like this
Why thank you! :)
If I had a nickel for every time Keith David voiced a cat I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice😂
Haha Keith David playing cats, that have fuck this shit I'm out vibes. First this cat from the other mother and then husk just dipping away from military vaggie. 😂
He said he loves voicing cats though. He said it was his spirit animal 🥰
@@rileygibson7866 it represents us all people of color when we find something strange lmfao 🤣
Arby has kind of a grumpy cat vibe so technically it’s three. :p
Welchy and Coraline?! Wicked combo 👌🏼😆🩵
@welchy
That's awesome, I didn't realize that's Lois! And thank u for the info paragraph, also good to know❤
@@bekah9743 Happy to help!
By the way the cat was voiced by Keith david, who also is husk in hazbin hotel. Man is really into voicing cats
Mr. Welchy, have you already realised that you're inches away from your silver playbutton? All deserved, always get a lil excited when i get a notification that you've uploaded!
Ahhh I know! And thank you for watching! Glad I can make even a small difference 😊
The Other Father’s song is actually a warning to Coraline.
OH WELCHY i also recommend reading the book its a short book and its creepier in the books the tunnel and everything.
i can vividly remember in grade 2 my teacher had us read the graphic novel for Coraline which was just terrifying. and then at the end she was like LETS WATCH THE MOVIE! and then for like 6 months i was completely convinced i had an other mother and she lived in my closet and i was dead terrified on a nightly basis....love the movie now lol
Alternative title: Welchy simping for the Other Mother for 25 minutes
I love how everything in this film was intentional there’s so many little things and Easter eggs in it. Also like that miss spink and miss forcible are a couple.
Coralline used to freak me out so bad, i didn’t go to the 3D showing recently cause im still scared of it😭😭
I was in middle school when I saw Coraline,I was like 15 when my older brother took me to go see this movie, scared me way back then,I just might rewatch it later lol.
The theorizer has a great in depth theory series that explains the movie’s reasoning for the other mother’s actions and how the movie addresses the book’s true villain
Somehow i did expect him to be just as down bad for Beldam as Danny Motta was lmfao 🌟
I'm honestly still traumatized from this movie 😖
Great reaction as always! and your faces were priceless🤣🤣
Thank you!! 😁
i’ve recently discovered this channel and omg it’s hilarious. support from australiaaaa

Please watch the barbie fairy topia series…. It’s one of the OG barbie classics
22:10 Figures that the Beldam banishes the Jones's to a fate worse than death, Detroit.
Coraline as a kid scared me as a kid. 9:04 You had them Taxidermy. 9:09 I had a friend in 3rd grade named Caroline. 5:57 The real mom had a neck brace but the Beldam made it look like a turtleneck. Stop-motion is so cool.
The real messed up part is that the Other Mother actually isn't the monster. She's a monster living INSIDE the monster.
Needless to say, it took us a while for any of us to get back into the mood to ride roller coasters after the movie X-X
Since you're down bad for the Other Mother and the Other Mother is a spider... we can count that as another point to Welchy being a furry
Also, there's a TH-camr named The Theorizer who made a bunch of videos for theories on Coraline if you wanna watch!
I was definitely a weird kid, back then and to this day Coraline is still my favorite movie
8:39 I love that jumpscare :D
I didn’t 😭
@@Welchy could see why :D
Watching this in cinemas back in August was a truly fantastic experience which my childhood love of this movie was building towards. Yeah, I love this movie a lot and I’m glad you love it too Welchy 😁
When i was in third grade, coraline was read to us and it awakened my love for ghost and mystery books. Great reaction and aloha from Hawaii! 🌺
My NUMBER ONE stop motion recommendation will always be Kubo and the Two Strings. Absolutely incredible film, and pushes the limits of the medium, and of storytelling.
The years on the bowls of taffy correspond to when the ghost children went missing
10:53 yeah, I can't watch The Nightmare Before Christmas. That was the one that traumatised me. It gave me nightmares for a whole year.
I haven’t watched coraline but myself on my tv in years but I always watch TH-cam reactions about it 😂😂 I gotta actually sit and watch it now
YAY! new Welchy video !
as a kid I watched this movie twice and I had creep nightmares both times
Finally, a reaction to my favourite movie. The transitions are incredible, all the foreshadowing and tiny details are amazing, and just everything about it is great
Coraline was definitely not blessed with the ability to read the vibes lol
Love Coraline love this channel just as much x ❤️
Why thank you!! :)
when i was young my mother watched this with me, both of us (even me despite being a child) were both confused how it wasnt a twelve 😭 its terrifying
Shout out to Mrs. Elkin for showing me this in 3rd grade and it becoming a permanent playback movie in my head
I literally love this film.I watched for the first time when i was a kid❤ I did a text about the film,a draw, sometimes i get too excited lol

Have u heard that theory that Coraline never left the other world the end confirms it bc the cat teleports in the other world not the real world the cat teleported at the end of the movie
One of my favorites. Saw it in theaters when it came out. It's now one of my 4yr olds favorite movies as well. I'm a proud mama ☺️

this makes me so happy seeing this movie i could rant all day! this plus welch made my day
welchy being down bad for the beldam was the highlight of my day honestly
20:40 i watched that three times lol. Awesome double jump scare
I hated it
LAIKA's first and best imo, though the rest of their catalogue is worth checking out too (Kubo, ParaNorman, Boxtrolls, the Missing Link).
Coraline was and still is the best stop motion movie for me
Yay!! Welchy video!! My coping mechanism is watching theses
This was and still is my favorite childhood movie
As a kid i hated horror stuff until like middle school and yet Coraline has always been my favorite movie. I loved it even when i refused to watch anything remotely horror. I love horror now lmao
Here's a fun fact for you. The cherry tree blossoms in the final showdown with the Other mother's hand are actually bits or pink popcorn 😋.

An interesting detail in the movie, When the lighting strikes it is shaped like the beldam`s hand. (Other Mother`s hand) And that is such an interesting detail in the movie.
I watched it first at 6 years old, I watch it at least twice a year, it's my comfort movie❤😂
