Hey friends! 😊This video is a bit different from my usual uploads - definitely on the longer side! I wanted to try to show a bit more of the design process with this one. ❤It was definitely a challenge to fitting two whole dice into one video, hopefully it was still interesting! Let me know what you think! Should I do more longer videos like this, or do you prefer the shorter format? And I'd love to hear your ideas for future projects - what stones would you like to see transformed into dice? 😁Thank you all so much! ❤
I really enjoyed this format! i've been thinking about the idea of gem cutting as a hobby for a while an honestly the extra details and explanations were really interesting to hear
Thanks so much! I love the technical aspects of the craft, but I wasn't sure how well they'd come across in the video. I'm really glad to hear you and others are enjoying those aspects! It's really pushing me to include more of that in my future work, which is awesome! Gemcutting is such a rewarding hobby. If you're interested in learning more, definitely check out your local lapidary clubs. They're usually super welcoming to newcomers and love sharing their knowledge. Many also have equipment at their locations you can try your hand at to see if you like it before jumping in. Thanks for the support, I really appreciate it! ❤
I’m also a big fan of the longer form video, and getting the chance to see your design process is especially inspiring! In my view, anyone who might have preferred the shorter format (my guess is very few people) could just start the video after the design section, but the rest of us would miss out on the journey if that part was removed!! Fantastic work as always and I can’t wait to see more of your work!
They look great together. The shift to a d10 style cut was a good choice. It reflects the dagger and heart shapes perfectly. Thank you for highlighting software. I had no idea something like that existed. When I first decided to get into this, I asked Hedron if he would mind sharing his cut sheets. He kindly sent me a full basic set.
Thank you so much! ❤ While there's nothing wrong with it, I'm not a HUGE fan of the classic dodecahedron shape, which is one of the main reasons why I went with my own design for these. I just think the shard shape lends itself so well to stone. Gem Cut Studio is what pretty much every faceter uses for their designs, and honestly It's pretty amazing with what it can do. Well worth the price in my opinion. That's super nice of Doug! I've talked with him a few times, and he's just such an awesome and kind guy (not to mention an absolutely master at the craft). However, I do recommend trying to just create the designs from scratch in GCS. It'll help build experience and you'll understand the designs a lot better by the end. Thanks again for the kind words! 😊
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! ❤️ These videos could be HOURS long and I’d still have such a hard time looking away & it would never be enough 🤩 I could watch them forever. Your filming quality, all the way to the BEAUTIFUL and STUNNING dice. I’m so amazed 🤩 I love the heart and dagger designs on the dice, what a neat idea! And I love the overall shape, I’m glad you went with this vs the general d12 shape. Now to just get the cast to use them 👀
Truly a stunning pair of dice. I love the profile on them. Both Stones complement each other perfectly. usually when I see mixed matched pairs, they look like they belong in two different sets. These two look like they belong together.
OKAY THAT GEM CUT STUDIO IS AMAZING!!! I didn't even know that software existed. Of course it exists, but it's still new to me and an incredible tool! Thanks for sharing that process with us! And the PPE portion is also amazing! I really love these process and tool details, it makes your videos unique and much more interesting to me. I may never do this myself, but I love to learn and these extra details really appeal to that part of me. I'm here to watch and enjoy the process, not just the results
Thanks so much!! 😊 Gem Cut Studio is an amazing application used by pretty much every professional in the industry! As for PPE, it's just so incredibly important. Unfortunately many of the folks in the stonecutting industry end up in really bad situations just because they don't like wearing respirators. If all it takes to save me from a life of bad lungs is to wear a mask, I'll do it every time. Thanks so much for the kind words! I appreciate it! I've been deeply considering sending them off to Matt regardless. If anything, just as a thank you for the inspiration to start my own games, and for being able to join him and the crew on theirs. These dice did end up fairly large in comparison to a standard D12, but nothing too crazy (unlike my massive Utah Picasso Marble). Making several small dice from a single stone isn't any more difficult tha, making a single larger die, other than the consideration of time consumption. Each die takes several dozen hours to cut and polish. Making twice as many dice, means it takes twice as long to do so. This is the main reason why I don't cut full sets (A full set would take like two months!!) As far as lubrication for the lap, there's a never ending discussion among faceters on what to put in your drip tank. Most say tap water is fine, while some are adamant the only right choice is distilled or deionized water. There's also a laundry list of additives that people swear by from Jet Dry Rinse Aid, to baby shampoo. I just use regular tap water, haha! 😂
Loved this!! I really enjoyed seeing the design process with the software and indexing wheel. I never knew about those (that the indexing wheel was swappable depending on the symmetry you want), and it just adds so much to the video. Hopefully, you'll get some sort of shoutout from Critical Role because you've earned it. Thank you!!
Thank you so much! I'm really glad that everyone is enjoying the more technical side of things, because that's what I enjoy too! I wasn't sure if it would come across well, but the support from you and others is really pushing me to include more moving forward, which is awesome!! Oh man, a shoutout from my favorite people in the entire world would literally shatter me, haha! I'm just glad I get to enjoy their adventures, and create something inspired by their incredible stories. Thank you!! ❤
Loved the explanation of the process and the longer format. Also love the non-D20, non-standard shape of the dice. And the bevels _really_ set off the shapes in the final shots. Amazing all around!
Thanks so much, I appreciate the kind words! 😊It was super fun trying out a new design, and I'll definitely be cutting some more dice shapes in the future! Thanks for the support, it means a ton! ❤
Thank you so much!! ❤ A full set is so incredibly intimidating. These two dice took me 4 whole weeks to complete (including video editing), so a full set of 7 dice would be like four months!! 😅 Also, don't tell anyone, but I think I'm going to open up my commissions after the next few dice on my to-be-cut list. There's an email sign-up on my website if you want to be one of the first to know! Thanks for the support, I really appreciate it!! ❤

Thank you so much!! I always try to learn everywhere I can so I can keep improving. I hope my next work is even better! ❤ Yes! I wanted something to really tie the two together, so I used the same gold paint for both dice. I think it makes them feel even more like a matching pair. 😊
@@SageAndNettle It really does tie them together! I only ask because its got a weird effect of looking like a paler gold on one and a rich gold on the other. They look so wonderful
I made this mistake when I did my kite shaped d12. The top face is offset, so you have to look instead at the down face. The kite only yields a flat upper face when the die size divided by 2 is odd. So 10/2 = 5 (works), 12/2 = 6 (pointy top). It still works though; you just need to know to look low.
That never occurred to me, but you are correct. You need to look at the top face on the bottom half for dice like these. Not sure I'd call it a mistake though. It's a beautiful design, it just changes how the dice work. It doesn't make them any less functional. It's not like it's a complete departure from the norm either. After all, a D4 doesn't have a top face either.
You're absolutely right, however, I did intentionally go that route for this design. Having the faces meet as triangles rather than kites was fine, but it just felt a bit bland to me, and having that offset gave me some extra bevels to cut and just made it feel more dynamic in my opinion. Also, I wanted the numbers to be reversed so I could fit the heart and dagger shapes. If I had to put the top of the heart at the point of the triangle, it would have been far more awkward to try fit in, but having it reversed let's it naturally fall into the shape of the kite, which just felt a lot better to me. Hope this helps! ❤
Oh man, a shoutout from my favorite people in the entire world would literally shatter me, haha! I'm just glad I get to enjoy their adventures, and create something inspired by their incredible stories. I'm desperately considering sending them off to Matt. If anything, just as a thank you for the inspiration to become a Dungeon Master. The last 8+ years of DMing for my friends has been absolutely life changing, and I owe a lot of that inspiration and influence to him and his friends. ❤
That's a great question! I switched to painting the numbers before removing the masks for a few stones, but I found that I often struggle to find the right ink color when I cant see the stone itself. I ended up painting all the numbers on one of my dice, took the mask off, and hated the color I chose and had to clean it all out and repaint them. Even for this pair I went back and forth between a bronze and the gold before deciding on the gold. While it could save a little time on cleanup, I end up happier with the results when I take this route. Hope this helps! 😊

What was the blue pad and the slurry you used for the polish?
The blue pad is a Spectra Ultralap, and the mixture is water & cerium oxide. Hope this helps! 😊
Maybe a silly question, but may I ask why you don't paint the numbers before removing the template?
