A Dungeon Delicacy: Pork Stone D20!
Hey Everyone! In this video, I cut a stunning piece of Red Banded Calcite, also known as Porkstone, into a beautiful star cut D20! This (honestly delicious looking) stone is known for its striking bacon-like patterns, created by layers of calcium carbonate and iron oxide. The result is one of the prettiest (and best tasting?) dice I've ever made! Let me know what you think in the comments below!
This delicious D20 could be yours! Check it out along with several of my other stone and gemstone dice at www.SageAndNettle.com

I didn't watch them in order, started with the bacon die and ended with this one, but I really enjoyed watching you settle into your own style with your videography and editing. I've been subbed to Hedron for a while now and recently started watching all of your videos. I just noticed that I hadn't subbed to your channel yet and fixed that real quick. I am a certifiable rockhound and spend my winters in SW Arizona collecting more rocks. I am a member of a rock club there that has a faceting lab. I talked to the instructor and they have agreed to help me make some dice. I intended to start last winter but was not able to make the trip south. Hell or high water, I will be heading down there in three weeks. Maybe I will catch the bug and buy my own machine so I can join you and Hedron on TH-cam. You two have such different styles that I hope there is room for another stone dice maker in the algorithm. Anyway. I'm off to watch the Moss agate video next. See you there.

    Another incredible d20!! While the star facets add a lot of time to the process, they also add an amazing level of detail and elegance to the final die. I also love the concept of the dwarven chef character using this "bacon die" in cooking up tasty dungeon stews for his fellows. Leaning into the "pork stone" with the dwarven chef ;) I'm thinking Tiefling. A chaotic good Tiefling Cleric. Thank you!! The stars were definitely difficult, but I'm so happy with how they turned out! 😁 Ohhh, I like that idea! Maybe they were a troubled youth, struggling with uncontrollable outbursts of infernal rage, who sought refuge in a temple to learn to control their fire. The priests there saw potential in the young Tiefling and took them in, teaching them to channel their inner turmoil through faith and devotion. Now, as a Cleric/Barbarian, they've learned to harness both their divine connection and their innate fury, walking a precarious but powerful path between peace and chaos! 😈

      @@SageAndNettle So let me tell ya about Sapphire :D Tiefling gunslinger magus. Half-sisters with an Aasimar cleric, Diamond, played by another member of our group. Raised together by Diamond's (angel) mom. In the course of gameplay, Diamond died. And Sapphire immediately quit the campaign to go off on her own on a mission to find someone to res Diamond. I could not make her stay, the character flipped me the bird and gave me a hearty F-U and ran off in search of a full resurrection. I wracked my brain trying to figure out why. I LOVED playing Sapphire and couldn't get over the character leaving. And finally it came to me. Diamond was the one who kept Sapphire out of trouble. I can't tell you how many times during the campaign that Sapphire ran headlong into danger and Diamond had to come back and pull healing shenanigans, and I realized that pattern held true all the way back to childhood. As kids, whenever her Tiefling nature would spill out, Diamond was there to hold it back, to help keep Sapphire Sapphire. The GM didn't like Ruby, my new character, who was kind of a riff on Willie from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, so gave Sapphire a deus ex to res Diamond and bring those characters back. Goodness I miss Sapphire. One of my favorites of all time. Also, gunslinger magus in PF1e is suuuper OP.

      I think it'd be fine, dice rolling isn't usually that violent of an activity. But like with any stone die you should take extra care. Use a padded dice tray and try to avoid rolling multiple stone dice at the same time.

      @@ssteele1812 Oh, that sounds like FUN! You would probably be OK, but might want to make a few spares just in case. Honestly I think the amount of force required to fracture most stones, even soft ones, is far greater than the clickety clack of math rocks. With calcite or other soft stones I think you're at greater risk of scuffing the polish. I don't know of any instances where someone has damaged a stone die during regular gameplay. So maybe make a few and find out?

    • @SageAndNettle
      @SageAndNettle 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I always recommend using a leather or felt lined dice tray, and rolling them away from other dice. In my experience, it’s not the stone dice that chip themselves, it’s the other dice they’re with that chip them. If you’re careful, and take good care of them, they will last years and years. I also include a single-slot dice chest with all of my stone dice, so they stay nice and protected when not in use. 😁 I had an amethyst dice (not one that I cut) chip pretty badly, but it was 1000% my fault. I dropped it into a tray with a bunch of other dice, and it landed directly on one of my metal dice and chipped it pretty bad. Completely avoidable and I learned a pretty good lesson, haha! I use some of my own personal cut stone dice in my games and haven't run into any issues with any of them. 😊

    Another beautiful d20 from a stone from our state! And BIG! Do you find it easier, harder, or about the same to cut a larger stone than a smaller one? I also like your idea for creating your own leather polishing pad and may do something similar with the flat lap that I just set up (finally!!). I have a 14k grit diamond paste pad, but I'd like to have ones for cerium oxide and aluminum oxide as I'm sure different ones will be best for different stones.

    • @SageAndNettle
      @SageAndNettle หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you!! Honestly, the type of stone matters way more than the size of the cut, but smaller dice are a bit easier/quicker. Some larger facets are difficult to polish (That lepidolite gave me a lot of trouble), but this one went surprisingly well with the leather lap. That's cool you got a flat lap setup! Cerium Oxide is great for silicates and works incredibly well for quartz. The Alumina Oxide (Linde A) has been working fantastic for the softer stones. There's also Chrome Oxide if you work with Jade, Lapis, or Rhodonite. Happy to share any knowledge where I can! 😊

    Fun fact, marble is made from limestone through geologic metamorphosis! A few more million years and your Picasso Marble might become true marble ;) The pattern is gorgeous and the resulting die is incredible. I love those reddish brown colors and the white shades make them pop. And great job on the DIY leather lap! Even if an off-the-shelf lap were an option for your faceting rig, it probably would have cost 10x as much. I feel like the original stone was absolutely huge and so much of it was ground away in the faceting process. Do you think it was big enough to get a full (albeit much smaller) polyhedral set out of? Is that something you'd ever consider or be able to do? Also, how do you feel about alabaster? It's a super soft stone not too unlike this limestone, but a dice set made of translucent white alabaster would just look incredible!

    • @SageAndNettle
      @SageAndNettle หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's super interesting! I'd love to get my hands on some marble too - I've been wanting to reach out to some of the countertop places near me to see if they have any scraps I could buy. Thanks for the kind words! I LOVE the texturing on this one, and the size and weight are just so incredibly satisfying, haha! I don't think this single stone would have been enough for a full standard set, but you're right, I did lose quite a lot during the pre-forming. I could have cut those bits off with my trim saw, but didn't think I'd end up with enough to really do anything with. I've made full sets in the past, but cutting seven dice takes seven times as long. It would also be pretty hard to film and edit, and would push a video quite a ways out. It's definitely something I want to do again in the future, but will probably be sticking mostly to just D20's for a while. I did just recently cut a unique design for a D4 that I'll be posting on my instagram soon. I totally agree! It would be awesome to cut some from Alabaster! I'll definitely keep an eye out and see if I can snag a few pieces to add to my to-be-cut list! I appreciate the suggestion! 😊

In woodworking it's common to use sawdust and wood glue to fill a knot or hole, but I'm not sure if the same idea would transfer to stone. If it would work, it could also give you an interesting option for painting the numbers in. I do agree the clear resin is a really cool effect and now has me imagining a D20 made from a geode... Mixing it with stone dust from the rock itself is a pretty interesting idea as well, though I'm not sure how that would effect the resin. I think it would still work fine! Honestly, filling the numbers with a colored resin is a super cool idea! I'd have to switch up the process up a bit, blasting the numbers in before I do the pre-polish cut and the polish though, which would be interesting. Ooooo A full geode would be crazy!! One I get a pressure pot for the resin, I'll consider giving it a shot, haha!

    What do you think about faceting the edges or corners? I think it'd look nice on mostly transparent stones, but I don't know if it'd add anything to these types of stones.

      I've done a handful of different cuts like beveling the edges or making stars on the corners. Natural stone dice look really great with some of the fancier cuts, but they're quite a bit of additional work so I don't do them often. Once I finally get around to cutting some clear gemstones I'll definitely opt for a fancier cut for sure. 😊

    The holographic effect from the light hitting the stone is mesmerizing!

      Thanks! Couldn't agree more! The video doesn't do it justice, it's so pretty in person!

    I love hearing your problem solving! Other stone carving channels I've seen the process seemed to be pretty standard, but I love seeing the progress.

      Thank you! The puzzle solving is definitely one of my favorite parts of faceting. If every stone was exactly the same, it would lose a lot of the fun for sure. 😊

    Literally thought you were going to say it's not made out of real root beer! 😹

    Did you know that the smell of root beer comes from the roots of the sassafras tree?

    Do you accept stone donations? I have some regular and some mahogany obsidian that I would love to see turned into something amazing.

      I'm working on getting a PO box set up, and am not taking donations until that's squared away. Thank you though! I actually have a few pieces of obsidian, including a nice rainbow obsidian and some mahogany obsidian. Both are on the to-be-cut list and will hopefully end up in future videos! 😊

    do you have a estimate on actual time it took to make this?

    • @SageAndNettle
      @SageAndNettle หลายเดือนก่อน

      All in, I'm probably around 40-50ish hours on this one. There was a bit of backtracking to try some different approaches, which added bit of extra time. Also, I am nowhere near the fastest gem cutters. A master could probably cut that time in half, haha. 😊

    Do you seal the stone with a finish?

    • @SageAndNettle
      @SageAndNettle หลายเดือนก่อน

      No sealing finish, just the polish with the alumina oxide. 😊
