AHHHHHH!! Thank you so much Doug!! You have no idea how much that means to me!! Ever since I first came across your channel, I've been perpetually inspired by the incredibly stunning works of art you create. You've been such a guiding light for me through the entire process, and I'm so incredibly grateful. You're an amazing person and an incredible artist, and I'm so honored to be able to follow in your footsteps. ♥♥♥
Thank you so much! I think all in on this one, I'm just about 40-50ish hours. That also includes filming, and I am far from the fastest gem cutters out there.😅 It's a lot of work, but it's SO worth it! 😊
Came here through the algorithm because I've been watch Hedron Rockworks. Watched all of your videos so far. I am a rock hound and collect rocks, I just haven't figured out what to do with the rocks I've collected yet. Do you take gift packages of rocks? No payment would be expected, it would be reward enough for me to see a rock or two I've found made into something beautiful.
Thank you so much! To even be remotely associated with such a master artist is an incredible honor! I don't have a PO box set up yet, but I will soon! I'd love to receive rocks as gifts, though I can't guarantee they'll be sized or suitable for dice or appear in videos. Each piece takes a lot of time to craft, and my to-be-cut list is long and getting even longer each day. Still, I'd be thrilled to see what you've found! Head over to SageAndNettle.com and sign up for the email list on the contact tab, and I'll let you know when I have my PO box set up! ♥
Wow, I can't believe you've been posting for 2 months already, and this is the first video I've seen of yours. I follow Hedron as well so it will be nice to have some more relaxing stonecutting on my feed. Will definitely watch the rest of your videos after this. Video quality is very good, too, for how long you've been doing this. I like hearing about what the rocks are and how they're formed.
Thank you so much!!! We'll get there with time, just gotta keep working hard! I'm still super new to geology, so it's fun for me to learn how things are formed and the history behind them too! Glad you enjoy the videos!😊
Makes me want to play D&D again just to get one of those. WOW! First video I have watched of yours, going to subscribe because of the quality of the video and the work. Great job!
Thank you so much! I strongly considered gold, but I felt that it might not stand out enough against the browns/yellows, so I went with White. I personally love how the white contrasts against the colors of the stone 😊 My next D20 has some really beautiful gold numbering though!
Same! Maybe even a creamy off-white to complement the earthy tones of the stone. The stone itself is so beautiful I might even have left it unpainted so as to not distract from the stone itself
Oooo, yeah a creamy off-white would have been a great choice! Still very legible, but still complimentary to the brows/tans. I personally love the look of unpainted numbers, especially when a stone has this much texture. The only downside is that it makes them pretty hard to read at a distance. Totally depends on the individual stone though! 😊
I've been subbed to Hedron for a while now and recently started watching all of your videos. I just noticed that I hadn't subbed to your channel yet and fixed that real quick. I am a certifiable rockhound and spend my winters in SW Arizona collecting more rocks. I am a member of a rock club there that has a faceting lab. I talked to the instructor and they have agreed to help me make some dice. I intended to start last winter but was not able to make the trip south. Hell or high water, I will be heading down there in three weeks. Maybe I will catch the bug and buy my own machine so I can join you and Hedron on TH-cam. You two have such different styles that I hope there is room for another stone dice maker in the algorithm. Anyway. I'm off to watch the Moss agate video next. See you there.
Thank you for sharing this, a certain other channel doesn't upload nearly enough videos to sate my hunger for these videos 🤣 Although in fairness to Hedron, he could upload five videos a day and I'd still want more XD
This came out really, really nicely. I wonder what about leaving the edges uncoated when you sandblasted the numbers in, leaving a triangle around the face?
Thanks so much! I've thought about doing this a few times, though the main issue is how aggressive the sand blaster is. Rather than leaving nicely smoothed frosted edges, I fear it would create gnarly eaten up rough edges which I'm not sure how they'd turn out. Maybe I'll give it a shot on one of my next D20s! 😊
@SageAndNettle Not that I have any experience in this hobby, I just enjoy the videos, so feel free to cheerfully shoot down my idea, no offense taken...Is it feasable to "de-polish" the edges after you polished them, like with a quick drag over a lower grit wheel?
Yeah, it's absolutely possible! It's called "frosting" and is done exactly like you say, you just swap back to a lower grit lap and gently rub the stone against the rougher surface for a few quick passes and it takes off the polishing, giving it a frosted look. The downside is that you have to frost the entire face at the same time, so I wouldn't be able to partially frost just the outside of one face for example. However, if I'm working with a fancier cut, say one that has beveled edges, I could frost all of the bevels and it would turn out really nice! Hope that makes sense, haha! 😊
Thank you so much! The blue stuff is plastidip that I just kinda plop on there to cover any exposed areas. It's nice because it sets pretty quick, does a great job of protecting the stone, and is super easy to peel off when I'm done. 😊
This is a beautiful piece. I wish the numbers were gold for the Ali Baba and his treasure deep in the pitiless desert. Or reddish brown for the spice blows of Arrakis. I feel like white (however much more legible it is) was a missed opportunity
Both of those are really good suggestions! I just felt that the gold would have blended in with the browns and tans too much, and would make legibility a bit difficult. I do like how the white turned out though! On my next brown-ish stone, I'll definitely reconsider gold, even if it's not the most contrasting color. Thank you! 😊
It's just a standard adhesive vinyl masking film. It doesn't say that it's made for sandblasting, but it's worked amazingly for me. Glad you enjoyed the video! 😁
That's a giant d20 for some really nice 20 nat. Awesome work! Keep going like this 😁 I never did this but I want to suggest something. When cutting the mask on the CNC, why don't you cut it in a continuous mask instead of one piece per face? In theory it should be faster to apply 🤔
Thank you so much!! That's a great question! I did cut continuous masks on my first few dice, but I found that it caused a few issues. When folding it over the edges, it ended up pulling the mask slightly, and by the time the last one was on, it would end up off center. Additionally, where the mask meets itself, it would slightly overlap in some spots which made adding the plastidip difficult. It's entirely possible that these were just issues with my process, but I ended up just switching to individual masks for each number. This way I can line each one up exactly where I want it, and it just works better for me, even if it takes a bit longer. Thanks again! 😊
@SageAndNettle Nice job on the dice. With regards to the mask, sounds like it was a little small for the die it was used on. Remember the material of the mask has a thickness that needs to be accounted for in sizing it for the die.
Thank you!! I tried to work out exactly how to do it as a continuous one, trying to account for the thickness of the mask, but I just couldn't get it right in practice. I tried chopping it up into smaller sections as well, and still ran into issues, so just went back to individual masks for each face. It works well for me and I'm happy with the results, even it takes a little longer to do. 😊
Thank you!! Each stone is different, and it depends a lot on the hardness of the stone. Jasper is made of microgranular quartz or chalcedony, which has a Mohs hardness of ~7. While it is a bit difficult to cut and can be time-consuming, it tends to polish up quickly and easily. All in, I'm just about 40 or so hours on this one. I am nowhere near the fastest gem cutters and know there's a lot of room for improvement in my process. A master could probably cut that time in half. 😊
Great question! It depends a lot on what you are cutting, and on which lap. I cut a lot of quartz family stones, which wears out my rougher laps (the 120 and 240) pretty quickly. I end up replacing them every 2 or 3 stones, or whenever I feel them start to slow down. Luckily the topper laps are only $10-20 each.
@@SageAndNettleBig hunks of jasper would prefer a 100 grit lap, maybe even 80. Best to preform your stone on the coarse wheel of a cabbing machine, much, much more efficient.
😮Wow, thank you! Doug from Hedron Rockworks and his editor Andrew Janey put in so much work, and I can only aspire to reach their level of mastery. They both create such beautiful works of art, to even be mentioned in the same sentence is a huge compliment. Thank you so much!
I tried that but they just sink to the bottom, haha! I have rolled a few of mine 100+ times just to see, and the results are just as random as any other dice. I'll always advocate to talk to your DM before you bring any stone/gemstone dice to the table, just to make sure they're okay with it first 😊
YES!! I definitely want to cut some synthetic ruby and sapphire! The great thing about Ruby and Sapphire is they're a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, which is almost as hard as diamond, so they're incredibly durable (and incredibly hard to cut, haha!). Definitely on my dream cut list for sure!
@@PackthatcameBack I've looked into it in the past a bit. With Synthetic ruby it's a bit difficult to find in the right size. The boules of ruby that I've seen always split during the forming process, so they end up a bit too thin to make dice from. I know there's some laser ruby and sapphire out there that could be the right size, so maybe I'll take the plunge and try to source some! It would definitely be amazing to have the opportunity to cut some!
@@SageAndNettle What you want are unsplit boules, as I believe they are called. Just as you say most you find are split, but you can find unsplit ones if you look.
Woah woah woah now. You can't just make an awesome D20 like that and not roll it, that has to be against the law or something. Just kidding (mostly), awesome work!
