We have no joint defense agreement with Taiwan. We dont have the military lift to move the required ground troops to defend Taiwan. there is no pre positioned equipment of the US military in Taiwan. There is no Infrastructure to maintain and repair military equipment in Taiwan for American military equipment. The First Gulf war it took a huge cold war US army 6 months to bring 400K troops and all the equipment from US bases into the gulf to attack Iraq...thats without Iraq firing a shot at any of it.

The Chinese have anti-ship ballistic missiles that can hit US aircraft carriers and destroyers 2500 km away from the Chinese coast by way of the DF26, and then there is the DF21, which can sink the largest US vessels within 1500 km from the Chinese coast. Add to that the hundreds of hypersonic anti-ship missiles by way of the DF17, the very capable YJ12 and YJ18, the large numbers of Chinese submarines, and now, the new YJ21 ship-launched ballistic missile to be launched from the Type 055. This is not to mention the J10 and J20 in their hundreds, with air to surface missiles.

Before WW2 the US formally had a policy of neutrality and wasn't allied with anyone. The US currently does have a formal defense treaty with Taiwan which it routinely affirms. There's no reason in hell to think those diametrically opposed circumstances are equivalent.

First of all geography. Afghanistan is land locked with long land borders that are easily supplied by foreign countries interested in a proxy war against the Western occupation. But Taiwan is an island near to China and across the Pacific ocean from US. It is also thousands of miles from NATO countries. Supplying its guerrilla force will be tough. China, with area denial capabilities it will not be avwalk in the park. China had already declared that it will go to war with US and the west , read WWIII, if they interfere . Although South Korea and Japan will side with the west spiritually they will be at best be cheer leaders. The teason is also geography. Seoul is only 40km from the North Korean border. The US and S. Korea has about 40,000 troops at yhe border but then , as in the Korean war in the 1950s heavy weapons and airforce superiority makes no difference because of the mountaineous terrain. Seoul will have to fight two fronts and its small population just cannot sustain a major war. As for Japan, China is itching for revenge for its invasion and atrocities of WWII. Geographically it is so near China that supersonic and hypersonic missiles will just take less than half an hour to reach most of its cities. Again its population base in a few major cities plus its small population and land mass vis a vis China cannot accept the dame casualties it can inflict on China. It too will just be a cheer leader. Thirdly, a very important fact is Taiwan is a province of China since the Ming Dynasty. Its population is basically Han Chinese racislly as well as culturally. Also, if you look at the voting only a bare majority of those who haf voted for the independence party. Proportion to the total population they represented only about 20% of the population. So my personal opinion is there will be no guerrilla war if Mainland China quickly hand over the governance to the pro Mainland ,as in the Kuomintang or any group of Taiwanese , ad soon as the military is neutralized and the DPP independence party apparatus is dismantled.
US should remember its bitter experience from Korea, Vietnam and Afghans and refrain from getting involved as China consider it's core interest in unifying the country, different than those previous conflicts.
The issue is Japan and Korea. If the US lets Taiwan to go to mainland China with a whimper, Japan will get a freestanding army and Korea will almost certainly develop nuclear weapons (and they will have them within 5 years) because they absolutely have to. Consider SK: a nuclear NK that's threatening all the time and nuclear China that just took over a nearby island. All the other nuclear states did nothing. Their hand will be forced.
Assuming a limited war over Taiwan is possible, what is considered a win for China is simple. It becomes a province of mainland. For America , what is a win? Its ambiguous status remains.

Going in there and blowing up every building and killing all the residents (in an extreme example), gets them a hunk of rocks of no value. China could unify Taiwan by force long ago. We have the weapons: hypersonic missiles, aircraft carriers and all kinds of killing machines just as deadly as what US troops have. Anyone who thinks that the United States will come to defend Taiwan in an all out hot war, is delusional. The last wars where the U.S. Army engaged with the PLA were the Korean War (1950 - 1953), and Vietnam War (1965-1968). In both wars, however one spins, the United States were defeated. That was when the PLA was impoverished and equipped with primitive military assets by comparison. But today, with military capability that matches the U.S. in nearly every domain - air, sea, land, space, and cyber - even the U.S. air bases and military ports have become liabilities and sitting targets of the PLA. The price of a war with China to the United States is to put it bluntly - unaffordable!
Defending is easier. See how Russia is struggling in Ukraine. Both examples you gave had the US on the offensive. In those cases the bulk of the fighting was done by locals. Vietnam defeated US with Russian help as China was impoverished. In 1979 the same Vietnamese thrashed you all in your cross border conflict. Also, as the Treacherous Chinese have rubbed all other nations the wrong way, no way of knowing how they all will react as they all know very well that it is Taiwan today and it could be them tomorrow.
US cannot beat China militarily simply because it can only commit 1/3 vs the entire Chinese forces. Then it will escalate to WWIII in which they will also be no winners.

Taiwan will eventually come back into being a part of the mainland, again, because that's what it used to be. That's why the Kuomintang fled there in the first place.

Wars are fought on the chance of success and the economic benefits compared to the economic consequences. China has thousands of modern combat jets, a huge advanced Air Defence System, 100 modern destroyers and frigates, 50 ASW corvettes, 120 missile fast attack craft, 70+ submarines, plus hundreds of PLA Navy support vessels, 1200 CCG coastguard vessels including many with considerable combat capabilities, 850 MSA maritime safety agency vessels that support the PLA Navy. They also have a huge number of modern cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, hypersonic anti ship missiles, etc. Not to mention their SSBN nuclear missile submarines, silo based nuclear weapons, mobile nuclear weapons and air launched nuclear weapons, and a very robust and advanced defence equipment research and development sector and weapons manufacturing industries. They are also growing stronger each year. The PLA couldn't defeat the US forces outside of China but I think that they are well able to defend their own country and interests. No president would risk a nuclear catastrophe and the collapse of the world economy just to declare a war that would be unwinnable, so I don't think that China should be portrayed as an enemy and instead of being demonised by the western world it should be given credit and recognition for its many positive achievements, because the possible alternatives are too frightening and devastating.
China specializes in self promotion. China projects its power by using hyperbolic rhetoric. China is great at using shining military hardware to intimidate people with no weapons like ordinary Chinese or minorities in Xinjiang or Tibet and those easily bought or intimidated in the west. The west also has weapons, much more powerful weapons in better quality. The west in particular has much better trained military with lots of combat experiences. China, like anyone, can start a war, no doubt about that. The chance for China to win the war decisively is very slim. Taiwan and the west don't have to aim at winning the actual war, but only have to create an opening for domestic Chinese opposition to topple its government. Given China's high concentration of its population and economy in the costal area, the war can cause much more casualty in China than it would in Taiwan. The fight with China is not about winning the actual war but about using that opportunity to topple the communist party in China, which is absolutely possible.

It's not important enough to the US to go to war with one of its major trading partners and its unlikely that the US military high command would risk a war that would be unlikely to end in a US victory and could actually end in a US defeat. The Chinese government has actually been extremely beneficial to the majority of the Chinese population and the truth of how prosperous and advanced China is doesn't get shown much in the western media. My point is China couldn't defeat the US outside of the East Asia Region, and but they are already too powerful to be defeated in their own part of the world, they are probably happy with that because they have been so successful economically that they wouldn't go off on unnecessary military operations unless they were forced to. At the same time, no matter what Biden says the US would be highly unlikely to risk so much for an island nation that isn't that important. I am puzzled why US is concerned about about Taiwan. About 30% of the population are Japanese who forgot to go home after WW2 after two big bombs. A large number of Chinese there are dissidents who ran from mainland. At the same time 30 DF-21 missiles launched aiming all the E-planes (US and Japan and Taiwan) within 1000 km. (2) 0:05, 100 Y-20 transports took off with 100 paratroopers in each plane. (3) 0:25, J-6W anti-radiation drones found all the surface mounted radars in Taiwan. Some drones were shot down by Taiwan missiles but remaining drones destroyed all the radars. 300 PLA jet fighters and bombers took off. (4) 0:30, all the E-planes were shot down, Taiwan air defense went dark. China is too much of a threat to the entire world. They want to dominate the world. You can hear it in their own internal dialogue. The U.S. will not allow them to take control of the 1st Island chain. They must be contained at all cost. They have no natural resources at home so they have to expand to progress. You have left out the possibility that China and Taiwan might get together through peaceful means like inter dependent trade relations, currency unions and cultural exchanges, but the US feels that it is necessary to stir the cauldron and land large arms deals.
I think the selling of arms is something incidental. The important thing for the US is to intervene decisively, either by making war with China or by economic means (through sanctions, for example), so that the rest of the world continues to respect the US as the leading superpower. I believe this is what is driving the US into intensely helping Ukraine to win.

We have no joint defense agreement with Taiwan. We dont have the military lift to move the required ground troops to defend Taiwan. there is no pre positioned equipment of the US military in Taiwan. Is it really even between US and China currently? The Chinese have anti-ship ballistic missiles that can hit US aircraft carriers and destroyers 2500 km away from the Chinese coast by way of the DF26, and then there is the DF21, which can sink the largest US vessels within 1500 km from the Chinese coast. Add to that the hundreds of hypersonic anti-ship missiles by way of the DF17, the very capable YJ12 and YJ18, the large numbers of Chinese submarines, and now, the new YJ21 ship-launched ballistic missile to be launched from the Type 055. This is not to mention the J10 and J20 in their hundreds, with air to surface missiles.

China can be cut off at the knees from a distance of thousands of miles. A naval blockade or sanctions blockade or both could ruin China in a matter of months, not counting the havoc we can wreak on their navy, and their ports. Add in unimaginable personnel losses by China trying to cross the Taiwan Strait and I’m not seeing China’s path to victory or anything but catastrophe.

If the US tries to strike at the Chinese Mainland the Chinese have missiles that can strike anywhere, any place any time deep inside the US Mainland.
NORTH Vietnam barely had an ari force, had no missiles and no weapons manufacturing capability.
China currently outnumbers the US Air force and naval power in the region, plus the Chinese would be flying from their Mainland under the cover of their ground based air defense systems, warships air defense systems and ground based and space based radar systems.
And if even if by some miracle if the US were to defeat China the first time and defend Taiwan.
What would happen then after that?
The Chinese would just go back to their Mainland, learn from their mistakes and rebuild their military, navy and air force even bigger and stronger than before.
Then they would come back again and again and again and again until they would eventually succeed because Taiwan is such a core issue to them. They will never stop trying to reunify their country just like the North Vietnamese never stop fighting until they reunited the whole of Vietnam.
So what would the US do the second time China would attack Taiwan, what about the third, fourth, fifth, sixth. Would the US be willing to come back again and again and again to fight China over and over and over again.
I am telling you even if you fight China 100 years they will never stop fighting for Taiwan because they would see it as holy war and a patriotic war similar to their struggle against the Japanese in WWII.
Remember the Tet offensive. The North Vietnamese launched a massive attack against the US and South Vietnamese troops and suffered a crushing defeat. Did they stop after that. No.
They went back rebuilt their forces and kept coming back, again and again and again until the US lost its will to fight and decided to turn tail. Same thing happened with thr Taliban.

China has the largest industrial manufacturing capacity on earth larger than the US, Japan and Germany combined.
China has the largest logistics capabilities, largest industrial workforce, and the largest number of factories in the world.
If the US goes to war with China over Taiwan the Chinese government will deploy all its entire industrial workforce, all of its population, all of its logistics, factories and industrial production into full scale war production.
Furthermore, because the US has pissed Russia off. And Russia will become much closer to China. It is very likely that Russia would fight on the side of China placing bases in Japan and South Korea within striking range of both countries.
The US would have to be insane to get into a war with China and Russia in the Pacific over Taiwan.
The US would suffer a total defeat and any country that hosts American forces would either tell the US to get the hell out of their country or get completely obliterated.

First of all geography. Afghanistan is land locked with long land borders that are easily supplied by foreign countries interested in a proxy war against the Western occupation. But Taiwan is an island near to China and across the Pacific ocean from US. It is also thousands of miles from NATO countries. Supplying its guerrilla force will be tough. Also, if you look at the voting only a bare majority of those who haf voted for the independence party. Proportion to the total population they represented only about 20% of the population. US should remember its bitter experience from Korea, Vietnam and Afghans and refrain from getting involved as China consider it's core interest in unifying the country, different than those previous conflicts.
The issue is Japan and Korea. If the US lets Taiwan to go to mainland China with a whimper, Japan will get a freestanding army and Korea will almost certainly develop nuclear weapons (and they will have them within 5 years) because they absolutely have to. Consider SK: a nuclear NK that's threatening all the time and nuclear China that just took over a nearby island. All the other nuclear states did nothing. Their hand will be forced.
Assuming a limited war over Taiwan is possible, what is considered a win for China is simple. It becomes a province of mainland. For America , what is a win? Its ambiguous status remains.

Going in there and blowing up every building and killing all the residents (in an extreme example), gets them a hunk of rocks of no value. The price of a war with China to the United States is to put it bluntly - unaffordable!
Defending is easier. See how Russia is struggling in Ukraine. Both examples you gave had the US on the offensive. In those cases the bulk of the fighting was done by locals. Vietnam defeated US with Russian help as China was impoverished. In 1979 the same Vietnamese thrashed you all in your cross border conflict. Also, as the Treacherous Chinese have rubbed all other nations the wrong way, no way of knowing how they all will react as they all know very well that it is Taiwan today and it could be them tomorrow.

Wars are fought on the chance of success and the economic benefits compared to the economic consequences.
China has thousands of modern combat jets, a huge advanced Air Defence System, 100 modern destroyers and frigates, 50 ASW corvettes, 120 missile fast attack craft, 70+ submarines, plus hundreds of PLA Navy support vessels, 1200 CCG coastguard vessels including many with considerable combat capabilities, 850 MSA maritime safety agency vessels that support the PLA Navy.
They also have a huge number of modern cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, hypersonic anti ship missiles, etc.
Not to mention their SSBN nuclear missile submarines, silo based nuclear weapons, mobile nuclear weapons and air launched nuclear weapons, and a very robust and advanced defence equipment research and development sector and weapons manufacturing industries.
They are also growing stronger each year.
The PLA couldn't defeat the US forces outside of China but I think that they are well able to defend their own country and interests.
No president would risk a nuclear catastrophe and the collapse of the world economy just to declare a war that would be unwinnable, so I don't think that China should be portrayed as an enemy and instead of being demonised by the western world it should be given credit and recognition for its many positive achievements, because the possible alternatives are too frightening and devastating.
China specializes in self promotion. China projects its power by using hyperbolic rhetoric. China is great at using shining military hardware to intimidate people with no weapons like ordinary Chinese or minorities in Xinjiang or Tibet and those easily bought or intimidated in the west. The west also has weapons, much more powerful weapons in better quality. The west in particular has much better trained military with lots of combat experiences. China, like anyone, can start a war, no doubt about that. The chance for China to win the war decisively is very slim. Taiwan and the west don't have to aim at winning the actual war, but only have to create an opening for domestic Chinese opposition to topple its government. Given China's high concentration of its population and economy in the costal area, the war can cause much more casualty in China than it would in Taiwan. The fight with China is not about winning the actual war but about using that opportunity to topple the communist party in China, which is absolutely possible.

It's not important enough to the US to go to war with one of its major trading partners and its unlikely that the US military high command would risk a war that would be unlikely to end in a US victory and could actually end in a US defeat.
The Chinese government has actually been extremely beneficial to the majority of the Chinese population and the truth of how prosperous and advanced China is doesn't get shown much in the western media.
My point is China couldn't defeat the US outside of the East Asia Region, and but they are already too powerful to be defeated in their own part of the world, they are probably happy with that because they have been so successful economically that they wouldn't go off on unnecessary military operations unless they were forced to.

China can literally use every military vehicule, or soldier as its their home. the US can never even send 50% of what they have as otherwise Europe can get attacked by Russia and in the Middle East well. israel need the US support to end at war.

I am puzzled why US is concerned about about Taiwan. About 30% of the population are Japanese who forgot to go home after WW2 after two big bombs. A large number of Chinese there are dissidents who ran from mainland. You have left out the possibility that China and Taiwan might get together through peaceful means like inter dependent trade relations, currency unions and cultural exchanges, but the US feels that it is necessary to stir the cauldron and land large arms deals.
I think the selling of arms is something incidental. The important thing for the US is to intervene decisively, either by making war with China or by economic means (through sanctions, for example), so that the rest of the world continues to respect the US as the leading superpower. I believe this is what is driving the US into intensely helping Ukraine to win.
