We have no joint defense agreement with Taiwan. We dont have the military lift to move the required ground troops to defend Taiwan. there is no pre positioned equipment of the US military in Taiwan. There is no Infrastructure to maintain and repair military equipment in Taiwan for American military equipment. The First Gulf war it took a huge cold war US army 6 months to bring 400K troops and all the equipment from US bases into the gulf to attack Iraq...thats without Iraq firing a shot at any of it.

Is it really even between US and China currently? The Chinese have anti-ship ballistic missiles that can hit US aircraft carriers and destroyers 2500 km away from the Chinese coast by way of the DF26, and then there is the DF21, which can sink the largest US vessels within 1500 km from the Chinese coast. Add to that the hundreds of hypersonic anti-ship missiles by way of the DF17, the very capable YJ12 and YJ18, the large numbers of Chinese submarines, and now, the new YJ21 ship-launched ballistic missile to be launched from the Type 055. This is not to mention the J10 and J20 in their hundreds, with air to surface missiles.

As with Russia we are not talking about a straight-up military engagement. China’s geography is critical, as are its needs for imported fuel, food, raw materials, etc., as well as the absolute dependence of the Chinese economy on exports. China can be cut off at the knees from a distance of thousands of miles. A naval blockade or sanctions blockade or both could ruin China in a matter of months, not counting the havoc we can wreak on their navy, and their ports. Add in unimaginable personnel losses by China trying to cross the Taiwan Strait and I’m not seeing China’s path to victory or anything but catastrophe.

@@emmanuelbediako7682 Dreams? Really? Is China’s absolute economic dependence on exports, chiefly to the US, a dream? It’s a Chinese nightmare maybe. Can their essential fuel supplies be relatively easily interdicted, or is that a dream too? No sane person thinks China’s navy and air force are anywhere near America’s. No dream there. Nor is it a dream that China, while being observed by American satellites, will need to prepare an invasion force of hundreds of thousands, taking weeks if not months, and then send it across miles and miles of open water-water swarming with American submarines, and vulnerable to American aircraft, missiles, etc., not to mention what Taiwan, Japan, Australia, probably India, et. al. will be throwing at it. Their ports will be in range of all that stuff too. And none of this approaches wishful thinking. Yes, war should be avoided if possible, but the best way to provoke a country like China is to act weak, or indecisive, or to believe their bullshit propaganda, and to credit their bullying threats. Maybe you’re the one who should wake up.

The Brooklyn Institute needs to fire this guy. He doesn't know what the hell he is talking about.
And this lady doesn't know what she is talking about either if she thinks there is anything the US can do to deter China from invading Taiwan.
Taiwan is the ultimate core issue to China. To China Taiwan its a matter of life and death.
Taiwan is to China what South Vietnam was to North Vietnam or what East Germany was to West Germany.
To say there is something the US can do to deter China from Taki NG Taiwan is like saying that there was anything the US could have done to deter North Vietnam from going to war with South Vietnam.
The US had 3 million American servicemen, hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese, Australian and South Koreans over the period of 10 years to prevent North Vietnam from taking over South Vietnam.
North Vietnam had a meager population of just 13 million people at the time, a military of less than 300 000 made out of students, peasants and farmers.
How did that war go for the US?
If the US couldn't keep North Vietnam from taking over South Vietnam. I don't understand what in the world makes any American stupid enough to think the US can prevent or try to keep China from taking over Taiwan
There is no way in hell the US could defend Taiwan from China. Chinese ballistic and cruise missiles can hit American warships, US Air refueling tankers and AWACS from much farther distances than US warplanes can fly to reach Taiwan or China. US warplanes are sitting ducks for Chinese ballistic and cruise missiles in their bases in Japan, Guam, Philippines and Korea
If the US tries to strike at the Chinese Mainland the Chinese have missiles that can strike anywhere, any place any time deep inside the US Mainland.
NORTH Vietnam barely had an ari force, had no missiles and no weapons manufacturing capability.
China currently outnumbers the US Air force and naval power in the region, plus the Chinese would be flying from their Mainland under the cover of their ground based air defense systems, warships air defense systems and ground based and space based radar systems.
And if even if by some miracle if the US were to defeat China the first time and defend Taiwan.
What would happen then after that?
The Chinese would just go back to their Mainland, learn from their mistakes and rebuild their military, navy and air force even bigger and stronger than before.
Then they would come back again and again and again and again until they would eventually succeed because Taiwan is such a core issue to them. They will never stop trying to reunify their country just like the North Vietnamese never stop fighting until they reunited the whole of Vietnam.
So what would the US do the second time China would attack Taiwan, what about the third, fourth, fifth, sixth. Would the US be willing to come back again and again and again to fight China over and over and over again.
I am telling you even if you fight China 100 years they will never stop fighting for Taiwan because they would see it as holy war and a patriotic war similar to their struggle against the Japanese in WWII.
Remember the Tet offensive. The North Vietnamese launched a massive attack against the US and South Vietnamese troops and suffered a crushing defeat. Did they stop after that. No.
They went back rebuilt their forces and kept coming back, again and again and again until the US lost its will to fight and decided to turn tail. Same thing happened with thr Taliban.
Plus let me remind you of what the US would be up against.
China has the largest industrial manufacturing capacity on earth larger than the US, Japan and Germany combined.
China has the largest logistics capabilities, largest industrial workforce, and the largest number of factories in the world.
If the US goes to war with China over Taiwan the Chinese government will deploy all its entire industrial workforce, all of its population, all of its logistics, factories and industrial production into full scale war production.
Furthermore, because the US has pissed Russia off. And Russia will become much closer to China. It is very likely that Russia would fight on the side of China placing bases in Japan and South Korea within striking range of both countries.
The US would have to be insane to get into a war with China and Russia in the Pacific over Taiwan.
The US would suffer a total defeat and any country that hosts American forces would either tell the US to get the hell out of their country or get completely obliterated.
Chinese warplanes on the other hand can fly circles around Taiwan and still have the range to strike targets deep insidr Taiwan.
American warplanes are sitting ducks in their air bases

The British and then later other Western Imperialist countries including the United States then attacked, invaded and plundered China. They imposed unequal trade deals on China and forced China to open up its country to their goods at gun point. They pumped Opium into China to balance the trade deficit they had with China. They took Chinese as indentured laborers, basically slaves to places like Malaysia, Singapore and the West indies.
All of these things turned China from one of the richest regions on earth into one of the poorest regions on earth 100 years later by the 1940s.
Whenever Chinese people used to rise up against Western Imperialists all these Western Imperialist countries got together, invaded China in force, massacred countless Chinese citizens, beheaded Chinese people and placed their heads in pikes around Beijing.
They sacked and plundered Beijing and desecrated the Forbidden city. They did this multiple times until the Japanese joined them tooand continue to do the same thing.
Up until the 1930s US gunboats filled with Marines used to sail up and down the Yangtze River and the Yellow River to impose these unequal treaties and force American goods into China at gun point.
Prior to the creation of the People's Republic of China the US Pacific fleet used to be based in China. The US, France, and Britain even took parts of China in Shanghai by force and used to occupy parts of China.

@@bpnk5237 Agree. If, that is if Taiwan independence movement will fight a guerrilla war for twenty years and US and the west can supply them with weapons. But I think this scenerio will not happen. First of all geography. Afghanistan is land locked with long land borders that are easily supplied by foreign countries interested in a proxy war against the Western occupation. But Taiwan is an island near to China and across the Pacific ocean from US. It is also thousands of miles from NATO countries. Supplying its guerrilla force will be tough. China, with area denial capabilities it will not be avwalk in the park. China had already declared that it will go to war with US and the west , read WWIII, if they interfere . Although South Korea and Japan will side with the west spiritually they will be at best be cheer leaders. The teason is also geography. Seoul is only 40km from the North Korean border. The US and S. Korea has about 40,000 troops at yhe border but then , as in the Korean war in the 1950s heavy weapons and airforce superiority makes no difference because of the mountaineous terrain. Seoul will have to fight two fronts and its small population just cannot sustain a major war. As for Japan, China is itching for revenge for its invasion and atrocities of WWII. Geographically it is so near China that supersonic and hypersonic missiles will just take less than half an hour to reach most of its cities. Again its population base in a few major cities plus its small population and land mass vis a vis China cannot accept the dame casualties it can inflict on China. It too will just be a cheer leader. Thirdly, a very important fact is Taiwan is a province of China since the Ming Dynasty. Its population is basically Han Chinese racislly as well as culturally. Also, if you look at the voting only a bare majority of those who haf voted for the independence party. Proportion to the total population they represented only about 20% of the population. So my personal opinion is there will be no guerrilla war if Mainland China quickly hand over the
governance to the pro Mainland ,as in the Kuomintang or any group of Taiwanese , ad soon as the military is neutralized and the DPP independence party apparatus is dismantled.

They may have learned to wear Gucci suits nowadays but nothing else seem to have evolved in their psyche and consciousness from their barbarian days. Instead of recognising their sordid past and history , they celebrate their delusions like "Thanksgiving Day" which the Native American Indians rightly and clearly remember and commemorate as their "Day of Mourning" being the beginning of the murdering, genociding, plundering, stealing, raping and ultimately, OCCUPATION , of their land uninvited, without any due compensation even till today.
But these thieves and robbers take a lot of pride in the stories they tell themselves and sell to the world how great their "founding" was!!! Same stories with the "Empire" where the sun never sets. Australia with the Aborigines. New Zealand with their Maoris. The African continent with all those Europeans...........it goes on and on. This is the 21st Century , for chrissakes! Grow up and come out of that sick and primitive mentality of never ending desire to dominate, control and subjugate.
The zillions of dollars spent on wars and "defence" and the other zillions being hoarded by the 1% is more than sufficient to provide every human being on the planet a very decent and never anything wanting life on this planet with the healthiest and cleanest environment. And we pride ourselves as being the only creature on earth with the intelligence, consciousness and capacity of free will and choice. And these sick politicians choose never ending squabbles, tensions and wars!!! Go figure.

The only way China would attack Taiwan is if the U.S. planted (yet another!) military base on it.
If that's what you want, and it seems to be the direction you're headed in, go ahead!

China has thousands of modern combat jets, a huge advanced Air Defence System, 100 modern destroyers and frigates, 50 ASW corvettes, 120 missile fast attack craft, 70+ submarines, plus hundreds of PLA Navy support vessels, 1200 CCG coastguard vessels including many with considerable combat capabilities, 850 MSA maritime safety agency vessels that support the PLA Navy.
They also have a huge number of modern cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, hypersonic anti ship missiles, etc.
Not to mention their SSBN nuclear missile submarines, silo based nuclear weapons, mobile nuclear weapons and air launched nuclear weapons, and a very robust and advanced defence equipment research and development sector and weapons manufacturing industries.
They are also growing stronger each year.
The PLA couldn't defeat the US forces outside of China but I think that they are well able to defend their own country and interests.
No president would risk a nuclear catastrophe and the collapse of the world economy just to declare a war that would be unwinnable, so I don't think that China should be portrayed as an enemy and instead of being demonised by the western world it should be given credit and recognition for its many positive achievements, because the possible alternatives are too frightening and devastating.

China specializes in self promotion. China projects its power by using hyperbolic rhetoric. China is great at using shining military hardware to intimidate people with no weapons like ordinary Chinese or minorities in Xinjiang or Tibet and those easily bought or intimidated in the west. The west also has weapons, much more powerful weapons in better quality. The west in particular has much better trained military with lots of combat experiences. China, like anyone, can start a war, no doubt about that. The chance for China to win the war decisively is very slim. Taiwan and the west don't have to aim at winning the actual war, but only have to create an opening for domestic Chinese opposition to topple its government. Given China's high concentration of its population and economy in the costal area, the war can cause much more casualty in China than it would in Taiwan. The fight with China is not about winning the actual war but about using that opportunity to topple the communist party in China, which is absolutely possible.

@@sunnysky115 you missed my point, Taiwan isn't important enough to China to risk all of their achievements and successes since the late 1970's.
It's not important enough to the US to go to war with one of its major trading partners and its unlikely that the US military high command would risk a war that would be unlikely to end in a US victory and could actually end in a US defeat.
The Chinese government has actually been extremely beneficial to the majority of the Chinese population and the truth of how prosperous and advanced China is doesn't get shown much in the western media.
My point is China couldn't defeat the US outside of the East Asia Region, and but they are already too powerful to be defeated in their own part of the world, they are probably happy with that because they have been so successful economically that they wouldn't go off on unnecessary military operations unless they were forced to.
At the same time, no matter what Biden says the US would be highly unlikely to risk so much for an island nation that isn't that important.
China will not risk their achievements over Taiwan nor will the US, I truly believe its sabre rattling and bluff.
Just imagine how the two biggest economies in the world would effect the world, it would be unthinkable for both sides to carry out their rhetoric about invasion if Taiwan declared independence and the US military involvement and assistance if Taiwan is invaded, and I doubt that the Taiwanese government would dare set off a potential world war just by declaring independence, the status quo will be maintained by all sides.

Very unlikely. By doing so US will have to confront China directly further raise tension in the region. The rest of the 10 ASEAN countries from Indonesia to Vietnam including the Philippines if the the latter also chose not be part of your conflict and intentions, then US will have totally no stands in South China Sea arena. No one will grant you any port call and transit passage perhaps only Japan and maybe South Korea.
Now then on QUAD, a very unlikely is India as no one really know what are they doing in South China Sea. If indeed they choose to come in, Pakistan will benefits largely from their participation as China will further expands its facilities there as well as weapons to them. That include Australia as well when they choose to get nuclear subs and by getting these subs the very next is SLBMs. Indonesia will be the first to banned nuclear subs from the seas around them and do not want a neighbors with such capabilities to encourage the rest of ASEAN countries to start a nuclear arms race within ASEAN. Australia too will be banned from the region.
The only one left is Japan as very unlikely South Korea is not interested in getting involves in the Taiwan affair. Using Japan as a prone perhaps they too will finally realizes that in the event of a confrontation the biggest loser IS Japan as US would likely just walk away just like they did in Afghanistan, Vietnam, Iraq and the list goes on. One must always remember, confronting China and having two other nuclear neighbors namely Russia and North Korea sitting just next door is a very risky business. US could simply walk away when things get messy but not for Japan and South Korea and even Australia as well as they will have to bear that sh*ts US leave behind for them to clean up.

Unless 3 super carrier groups are stationed around Taiwan, two in the Strait, one in east Pacific coast. There is just not enough time to send any real defense from Japan, Korea, Okinawa and Guam. There is only 150 km from Taiwan to China, within an hour, the following could be done by the PLA.
    (1) 0:00, 200 J-6W drones took off from 5 Chinese air fields. At the same time 30 DF-21 missiles launched aiming all the E-planes (US and Japan and Taiwan) within 1000 km. (2) 0:05, 100 Y-20 transports took off with 100 paratroopers in each plane. (3) 0:25, J-6W anti-radiation drones found all the surface mounted radars in Taiwan. Some drones were shot down by Taiwan missiles but remaining drones destroyed all the radars. 300 PLA jet fighters and bombers took off. (4) 0:30, all the E-planes were shot down, Taiwan air defense went dark. (5) 0:30, 300 mid-range ballistic and cruise missiles launched aiming all Taiwan air field run ways, fuel depots, missile batteries, switch yards and warships in the Strait. (6) 0:40, all the runways, warships, batteries, switch yards and fuel depots destroyed. (7) 0:45, 100 Y-20 transports dropped 10,000 paratroopers at all airbases, big bridges and Taiwan capital DOD War center. (8) 0:45, the 300 PLA jet fighters and bombers shot down in-air Taiwan jet fighters, and bombed all military bases. (9) 0:60, 2nd wave 300 cruise missiles arrived, destroyed all the communication facilities and major power plants, the entire island went silence and dark.

China spent most of its defense budget on the Rocket Army (early was called the Second Artillery) rather than on its Air Force or Navy. O'Hanlon did not tell the truth. China has enough missals to wipe out the US Navy within 3000 miles from China, with DF26 and DF21D. The US Navy cannot defend Taiwan from 3000 miles away. The US Navy cannot intercept DF26 and DF21D yet.

Even if the Chinese is beaten back for launching an invasion, she will try and try again until the end as was clearly mentioned recent at the Shangri-la forum in Singapore. Is the US willing to even considering to intervene all the time? The Late LKY did said that the US will not intervene due to this reason. He said it doesn't make sense for the Americans to do so.

China is too much of a threat to the entire world. They want to dominate the world. You can hear it in their own internal dialogue. The U.S. will not allow them to take control of the 1st Island chain. They must be contained at all cost. They have no natural resources at home so they have to expand to progress. You can already see this with their aggressive fishing tactics in the South China sea. They bring a gang of 200 massive fishing vessels and just steal all the fish off the coast of the Philippians and other countries. They seem to be butthurt about the century of humiliation and think the world is rightfully theirs. They are on the same path as the Nazis in WW2. They already have concentration camps and are building up their military. They need to be destroyed. I hate to say this but them trying to invade Taiwan would be a good thing. The U.S. will come in and destroy their military and remove the CCP from power.

If bullying were an acceptable replacement for warfare, Russia and China would both be globally dominant forces. Since Russia is struggling against Ukraine (ranked 29th in military strength), it's likely China is no more formidable. Numbers do not equate to experience. Although I disagree with most of the wasteful U.S. policing actions I've seen over my lifetime, I must admit that 'experience' isn't something the U.S. military lacks. China is a master of 'copying' products, not originating ideas. An onset of conflict would initially hurt the U.S. economy. But market demand would then cause an economic explosion of jobs inside the Americas as Chinese imports disappear and manufacturing comes home. A point compounded by lessening logistic fuel costs and the potential for cargo ships being lost at sea. As revealed by our current economic circumstances in the U.S., our problems are largely self inflicted by bad political actors.

It is super safe, clean and prosperous and the people love the government. Twenty years ago, 4 out of 5 students did not return from America. Now only 1 in 5 stays in the US. Has he looked in the mirror recently - homeless camps, mass shootings, divisive politics, de-industrialization and working poor. Brazil's Achilles' heel is the Itaipu hydroelectric plant. In April 2023, the contract needs to be renegotiated and if Paraguay does not accept the terms and suspends the sale to Brazil, the impact will be catastrophic for Lula's interests. It is curious to take into account that Paraguay is the only country in America that recognizes Taiwan's independence. And Paraguay was once a superpower and the most modern and advanced economy in the region. Paraguay sells Itaipu production because it cannot use it internally and neighboring countries, besides Brazil, show no interest in acquiring energy. Thus, an extraordinary opportunity to transform the economy of other countries is lost and Paraguay is forced to accept Brazil's terms.
If Taiwan and other economies decided to open companies in Paraguay and use energy from Itaipu, Brazil would have serious problems.
Another consideration is the Brazilian political mechanism. The house speaker can bring Lula down quickly, as Lula is fragile in Congress. A congress of just over 500 deputies with Lula's party having less than 100 elected. Lula can only maintain himself through the distribution of money to deputies. Today, Lula's mandate is in the hands of house speaker Arthur Lira.
This situation puts suspicion on Lula's strange attitude by turning his back on the G7 and Europe and aligning himself with Russia, Iran, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Cuba in a more open way than in the other mandates he had in 2004 and 2008. Now it looks like he is trying to implement a similar regime to consolidate power. Lula knows that he only won the election in 2022 because the middle class voted for him to remove Bolsonaro and not because his government would be the best
