NITRO HARLEY CRASH APPEARS IMMINENT! HEART POUNDING WILD RIDE FOR DRAG BIKE RACER & WHAT WENT WRONG

  • Enjoy this close look at what was one heck of a scary drag bike racing moment at Steven Ruggiero appears headed for a certain crash on his Pro Fuel Nitro Harley. Ruggiero experiences a rear wheel failure on the hard launch and somehow, miraculously keeps the motorcycle on two wheels with a save to remember. The drag racing fans, friends and family of Steve roar with cheers and applause after watching this seemingly sure disaster averted. We take several looks at this unfortunate incident and then head back to the pits to get a close look at what failed on the motorcycle. We also talk with a very relieved Steven Ruggiero. It’s almost impossible to put every part under the microscope during a race season but this video serves as a reminder to constantly check our as much as you can, even something you may be very comfortable with like a wheel.

Even though the weld was cracked or broken in the center, the weld's opposing sides matched perfectly indicating that the wheel was still fairly well aligned. If anything with the wheel occurred during this pass, I would say it was secondary when the side forces were exerted from hopping from left to right, etc. If Ruggiero was lined up straight, this pass looks like a classic example of one side (left side) of the wheelie bar being lower than the other which turned the bike to the right and out of the groove resulting in a loss of traction while he was leaning over. Definitely one of the best saves I've ever seen on a drag bike!

What can be done is a better weld job , and better inspection of said wheel . In theory the weld should be stronger than the wheel itself , the metal should have broken before the weld . If you like the way that you are put together , you can have your 20yr. old rims x-rayed for safety's sake . It's not cheap but it beats what may happen to you in a crash , just saying !!!!!

Great video... and he put the praise and thanks where it really belongs, in the Lord! The rim.... hmmm, "upwards of 20 years old"...?... considering the torque, and horsepower applied to one half of a welded wheel, coupled with sticky slicks and traction compound on the track.... it's nothing short of a miracle that it didn't come apart in a much more dramatic fashion, a long time ago!! Why are welded wheels even allowed on these bikes? Are they all welded, or are the newer wheels all one piece, now? If not... Why Not?
Great videos (am subscribed)... keep them coming, very much appreciated. I ran "rails" (front engined, except my D/Dragster from 1972 - 1975 was back motored) for nearly 20 years... never had any inclination to run the 1320 on 2 wheels. Thank God, He spared him... could easily have been a lot worse.... especially if it had come apart "at speed" down track instead of at the hit... a nasty close call as it was.

I noticed that as he launched the tire appeared to have lost pressure. The slick took on the shape of a flat tire just after he launched which would make me believe that the g forces generated as he got on the throttle caused the crack to expand releasing the air from the tire which in turn caused the bike to become squirrely. He did an amazing job of riding the beast.

Front rim looks to be a Performance Machine PM, the chicane style. These were produced 1986 mainly for road racing.
Very thin , lightweight 2lb front, 3.5 lb rear.
Will fold up on public road if you hit a pothole etc.
Were harsh chemicals used to clean rim, muratic acid, and oxidized the weld ? Has someone used that rim on a public road with potholes ?
I've seen these rims destroyed in wrecks, but never fall apart.
I've got 2 sets in garage, I will be examining closely.
Get Steve some roadracing knee pucks next run, never seen someone drag knees on dragstrip👍

Wayne Gacy II - The front is a PM Chicane wheel is is either a drag race front wheel or a narrowed road race wheel unless they produced road race wheels back then for the 80cc and 125cc classes. It looked to be around a 2.5" width or so. The rear wheel looks like a Centerline Auto/Drag wheel. Most of the Centerline wheels were DOT approved, unlike the original Cragar Super Trick wheels which are a two piece, bolt together design. I've never seen a Centerline cracked in the middle either other than from a hard impact.

In the year I raced a bike on the strip, I experienced a broken chain while shifting into 2nd which broke the case and sent oil on my back tire...not fun! I saved it! Another run I broke an allen bolt that connected the wheelie bar to the frame resulting in a straight up full throttle wheelie...again somehow I saved it. Then one time I sheared off all of the screws that held the tire firm to the rim, and the rear tire went flat at the big end. I felt it wobble very bad, then it sat down on the two roller skate wheels at over 130mph, and my first instinct was to touch the rear brake. The rear tire was completely flat and when I hit the brake, the tire stopped turning, BUT the wobble stopped and I could see clearly again. Once again, I rode it to a stop without a crash. Not long after this, my first son was born....so I quit racing.

Splitting a wide wheel down the center, with a drag slick, is like twisting apart an oreo cookie, the tire is the double stuff, the drive torque twisted it out of square on one side and the other side of the rubber held the track separating the two halves enough to effect traction and steering

My opinion on why the wheel gave out when it did when you burn your tire up rubber sticks to the track for traction and a hard lunch only being turn from one side of the wheel causing it to cheer in half I want to know what style hub was in that Rim did the hub mounting bolts cut in half

Aluminium has a fatigue life as the older aluminium is the more brittle it gets especially in the weld zone. Once a catastrophic weld cracks the drive chain only pulls on one side of the rim distorting the tire making it act like a spring between the now separated halves of the rim.

I love all things fast, wish I had my dad he was taken way to soon from my life.
