I think that when Iroh said lightning bending requires a clear mind, he’s referring to having a clear mind to learn how to do it. Once it becomes second nature to do it, you probably don’t need to be hyper-focused.
Its also likely iroh was talking about how he approaches lightning bending. We know you can draw firebending from anger like zuko did up until he visited the dragons. So ieoh saying you need a calm mind isnt necessarily the only way to do it. Probably just the "right" way to do it
Creating a small vacuum isn't creating a black hole. Hama was the first blood bender. Kyoshi wasn't controlling the water in Yun's body, she simply lowered the temperature. Szeto used the avatar state to cause the eruptions of 4 small volcanos, not as impressive. It makes perfect sense for Lava to be a subset of just earthbending, it is not a combination of earth and fire, fire has literally nothing to do with it. Lava bending is just what happens when an earth bender pressures the earth and changes it's temperature to quickly melt the rock. Changing temperature is something all benders can do, not just fire benders. It has nothing to do with fire bending, this is confirmed in the novels as well. It has nothing to do with having a fire and earth bending parents. Lightning bending was only a rare skill during aangs time because the rich and elite hoarded the knowledge of how to do it, despite it being an ability all fire benders were capable of.
Lava shouldn't be viewed as a combination of fire and earth, it's just advanced and untouched. Water benders can freeze and melt water even creating steam. Airbenders can warm their bodies through airbending. I think that information is to show that benders can control the temperature of their element through practice, and cold earth is just earth but hot earth is lava
It’s important to note that weve never seen such an extreme temp change as lava. Water freezes at 32F and boils at 212F. Lava is like 2000 degrees or something crazy like that

tbh I am quite surprised that water benders didn't try to just bend the water in a human body beforehand. I mean a person's body is mostly water. Or the minerals in a human's bones via earth bending. Transmuting calcium or carbon in bones to something else. If you think physics and physical and limitations of what benders could do is limitless and quite scary or helpful depending on circumstances and situation.
I never got the impression that Ozai was stronger than his daughter or even that he was that skilled of a bender. He never fought anyone without a massive advantage, and he has no special moves beyond a lightning blast that everyone learned by the next series. His fire bending is just an amped-up version of the basics. Even Zhao has a special move where he can split apart other people's fire blasts by splitting them with his bare hands. In an actual fight, I always thought she would win easily.

Iroh might literally have no idea how strong Ozai is. The last time they had a sparing match was probably when they were teenagers. From there, Ozai spent years at home while Iroh went off to war, and I doubt they ever trained together after that. Plus, Ozai has a bad habit of completely stopping and letting someone redirect Lighthin right at him. Zuko nearly hit him because he was too stunned to move. The same thing happened with Aang. The only reason he didn't die both times is because both of those people didn't want to kill him. Iroh invented that technique. I doubt it would be any less effective if he did it.

If she really could've bested Ozai easily, I think she would've done so a long time ago. But even if he did know, what do you think he could have done? I doubt he can beat Ozai and every elite guard in the palace. He would literally have to kill an army of guards to cover up what he did, and I doubt everyone in the nation would just call him Firelord if they knew. Ozai didn't stab his father publicly for a reason. He secretly poised him in a way no one could tell was a poison and forged his will.

As a firstborn, the throne should always rightfully be his, stolen or not, Ozai is merely a substitute. Iroh performed "one-man-army" feats before. I don't see why Iroh would need to kill anyone, even Ozai, Agni Kai does not need to end in death. That is unless Ozai truly is superior over both Iroh and Azula in every way.
A lot of things were destroyed in TLoK. But I'll talk about Lava Bending specifically. Every-time we saw Lava Bending in ATLA from an Avatar, it was by bending the EXISTING lava inside the earth, and as I understood it, it was impossible for the normal benders not necessary because they can't bend molten stone, but because they need Avatar-state-level-of-energy to bend something so far away and massive as magma inside earth crust. In TLoK lava bending is turning normal stone into lava instantly? Like, hello? This does not only require both fire bending and earth bending, this require a level of heat that we never saw from ANY fire bender. Did you see any fire-bender liquefying stone? And instantly? What's next, transforming earth into metal with metal bending? Transforming water into blood with blood bending? Transforming air into spirits with spirit bending?
Earth to lava is just a phase change, like ice to water. There’s no magical transmutation like you implied. Granted, the energy required to turn ice to water is much less than rock to lava, which is probably why lava bending is so rare compared to every water bender knowing ice bending.

I have a small theory for why Kyoshi is the only known person to bend glass. Kyoshi also knew a bending technique called dust stepping. Kyoshi would bend small particles of dirt on air and step on them, like if she was walking on invisible stairs. In the novels only the flying opera company, a daofei gang that eventually became kyoshi's companions knew this ability. There are 3 forms of this technique that were seen in the books, Dust stepping, Mist stepping and Jet stepping. I believe Kyoshi got so good at bending small grains of dirt she eventually learned how to bend the small particles of sand in glass, therefore making her the only person to learn this ability
5:30 Azula probably was more powerful than Ozai, but he instilled so much fear / loyalty in her that she wouldn't even have known it. Notice how quick he was to try to run away during the comet. Azula didn't do shit like that unless she was outnumbered.
There's an even darker version of blood blending that could be done. Imagine a water bender freezing someone's blood, shattering the ice, and then exploding it out of the body. The victim would be torn to shreds.
Since water benders can change the temperature of their element to make ice, it wouldn't be far fetched for an earth bender to be able to heat up rocks to make lava. It may just be harder to perform since it requires significantly more energy to reach that state, resulting in needing a lot of talent for it
Metal bending and lava bending do seem to be polar opposites. Think of interacting directly with physical objects. If you want to pick up a solid object you really only need to have a firm grasp on one part of it to pick it up. You don't have to touch every part of the object to lift it. But if you're trying to pick up a viscous liquid, you're going to have trouble lifting it with your bare hands. It doesn't just stick together. You have to somehow lift all the points of the liquid together all at once. Metal bending is precise earth bending. You're finding small points of earth and lifting the entire object using those points. Trying to bend the entire mass won't work. Lava bending is the opposite. Lava bending won't work if you're trying to lift the lava with a few precise points. You have to lift the lava in its entirety, bending all of it simultaneously.
I understand why the cartoon or the series wouldn't do it, BUT imagine if a bloodbender just sucked all the blood out of an enemy, like how Hama and Katara do with plants. Or or if a waterbender used bending to "reanimate" corpses in the battlefield, basically using bending to do a form of necromancy. That would make for a hell of a cool fight scene.
After playing Infamous, I thought to myself “Bending is honestly weak compared to other series.” I might have spoken too soon. Though to be fair, Infamous is a bit OP with the whole leaping into the air and crashing down like a comet. No Avatar could stop that, even if they saw it coming.
Azula bending blue based on new lore tracks because her whole thing was always being precise and in control which is why in her last fight when she lost it her bending took a massive hit though I know they kept it blue for contrast
I'd always assumed that Lavabending was only achieved by the Avatars and Earthbenders who had mixed Earth and Fire nation parentage. Bolin has an Earth Kingdom father and Fire Nation mother. I thought the same must have been true of Ghazan.

Lava bending isn’t related to fire bending. It just takes a deeper understanding of physics to either use friction or compression or some other means to heat up the rock. Just enough to become lava. It’s actually not on fire just really hot rock and advanced earth bending
Heart freezing was somehow what I fought is a advanced Trick for Bloodbender, but not that just the Heart freezed but the Blood in the Veins and that will alowed when it’s focusd on a Place of the Body that there it would be hard as Rock that it is not possible to be stunned or knocked back by an attack, in disadvantage is that you can’t barely move
I think lava bending for regular non avatars is based on heritage. Like in Bolin's case, his parents were from the earth and fire nation hence why he is an Earth Bender but his brother is a Fire Bender, perhaps that has a bit to do with why he was able to learn the skill. I would expect the more time goes on to see more bending techniques that bridge two or more bending types as the world starts to meld together.
i hope netflix is taking notes of all of this for their atla season 2. Because if they dont have a good bending lore in season 2 their season 2 will get nothing more than a 50% rotten tomatoes. those fight scenes in season 1 were good but not great. so for their next season, they need a very good depiction of martial arts and bending lore, and this info will help
Water benders freely bending water and ice is effectively the same as earth benders bending lava or earth, but for water benders probably needs a hardening of technique like earth benders, and lava benders needing a flowing technique, like water benders, and earth bending is so hard and direct, perhaps it's just harder to adapt the technique of lava bending than ice bending Water benders don't need fire bending to be able to shift from ice to water, but perhaps the technique is related to fire bending techniques
I wait for the day when an Avatar masters all of these plus all non-bending skills. Bonus points if the avatar spirit becomes a fusion of Raava and Vaatu after their eternal conflict comes to a permanent end.

Immortality technique work on basis of using mineral manipulation on you own body to force infinite cell regeneration. I dont think Kyoshi and Roku could lava bend. First Kyoshi. This scene... she dont really bend lava, she split ground to the lava. She didnt create it. Maybe she move it slightly. Overall it is a rock. But this is nowhere near to what Ghazan and Bolin do. If Roku could lavabend then he would win against volcano. Cooling lava is one of the lava bending ability. And why this is totaly sensible to be a pure earthbending technique? For the same reason why water bending can frezee and unfrezee water. This sounds like something that would be combination of air and water. But no, some kind of control over temperature of element is posible. In lava bend its just pushed to extreme. Lightning its not about clear mind. Its about being in peace with yourself. Reason why Zuko couldnt cast it was bc he had turmoil within himself. He couldnt figure out what he wants. Reason why Ligtning bending was so popular that you actualy had workers that did that on Kora was commercialization of bending. Kora is a world where water bending isnt ritualistic martial art but tool to make ice cream in street stand. Eartbending is used to pave roads. And fire bending is for welding. Lightning bending was a royal secret during Aang era. But it dont mean that it was imposible to learn by others. Metal bendind didnt exist. And in Kora you have city full of them. And to be a policeman in Republic city you probably need to have metalbending abilities. And compare their metalbending to raw hiting and basicaly molding metal by Toph those 70 years ago. Bending changes depending on needs. Republic city create oportunity and demand, and people just figure out how to do it. I dont think that every firebender in Republic is a capable of lightning bending. But those who can do it can get this job. Its no different than actual world. There are platera of jobs that only few qualified can do. But this dont mean that someone with certain talents cannot get this qualifications.
During the agnikai between Azula and zuko, half way through the battle Zuni’s fire should have turned green purple or ideally rainbow like the dragon fire it would have been a really nice conclusion to Zuni’s arch

Lightning is already plasma, literally. And depending on how hot the blue flames are, blue fire can also become plasma itself.

idk why everyone seems to think earthbenders could bend bones. the presence of certain elements or compounds doesn’t make bone earthen.

Don't forget, Zaheer also used suffocation and it's speculated that that's how Monk Gyatso defeated all of those soldiers.

I'd always assumed that Lavabending was only achieved by the Avatars and Earthbenders who had mixed Earth and Fire nation parentage. Bolin has an Earth Kingdom father and Fire Nation mother. I thought the same must have been true of Ghazan.

Lava bending isn’t related to fire bending. It just takes a deeper understanding of physics to either use friction or compression or some other means to heat up the rock. Just enough to become lava. It’s actually not on fire just really hot rock and advanced earth bending
Heart freezing was somehow what I fought is a advanced Trick for Bloodbender, but not that just the Heart freezed but the Blood in the Veins and that will alowed when it’s focusd on a Place of the Body that there it would be hard as Rock that it is not possible to be stunned or knocked back by an attack, in disadvantage is that you can’t barely move
I think lava bending for regular non avatars is based on heritage. Like in Bolin's case, his parents were from the earth and fire nation hence why he is an Earth Bender but his brother is a Fire Bender, perhaps that has a bit to do with why he was able to learn the skill. I would expect the more time goes on to see more bending techniques that bridge two or more bending types as the world starts to meld together.
i hope netflix is taking notes of all of this for their atla season 2. Because if they dont have a good bending lore in season 2 their season 2 will get nothing more than a 50% rotten tomatoes. those fight scenes in season 1 were good but not great. so for their next season, they need a very good depiction of martial arts and bending lore, and this info will help
Water benders freely bending water and ice is effectively the same as earth benders bending lava or earth, but for water benders probably needs a hardening of technique like earth benders, and lava benders needing a flowing technique, like water benders, and earth bending is so hard and direct, perhaps it's just harder to adapt the technique of lava bending than ice bending
Water benders don't need fire bending to be able to shift from ice to water, but perhaps the technique is related to fire bending techniques

Lava is just liquid earth so it’s like how Waterbenders manipulate the state of water even steaming which would require heat or fire but since it’s all chi it works the same

I dont think Kyoshi and Roku could lava bend. First Kyoshi. This scene... she dont really bend lava, she split ground to the lava. She didnt create it. Maybe she move it slightly. Overall it is a rock. But this is nowhere near to what Ghazan and Bolin do. If Roku could lavabend then he would win against volcano. Cooling lava is one of the lava bending ability.
And why this is totaly sensible to be a pure earthbending technique? For the same reason why water bending can frezee and unfrezee water. This sounds like something that would be combination of air and water. But no, some kind of control over temperature of element is posible. In lava bend its just pushed to extreme.
Lightning its not about clear mind. Its about being in peace with yourself. Reason why Zuko couldnt cast it was bc he had turmoil within himself. He couldnt figure out what he wants.
Reason why Ligtning bending was so popular that you actualy had workers that did that on Kora was commercialization of bending. Kora is a world where water bending isnt ritualistic martial art but tool to make ice cream in street stand. Eartbending is used to pave roads. And fire bending is for welding. Lightning bending was a royal secret during Aang era. But it dont mean that it was imposible to learn by others. Metal bendind didnt exist. And in Kora you have city full of them. And to be a policeman in Republic city you probably need to have metalbending abilities. And compare their metalbending to raw hiting and basicaly molding metal by Toph those 70 years ago. Bending changes depending on needs. Republic city create oportunity and demand, and people just figure out how to do it.
I dont think that every firebender in Republic is a capable of lightning bending. But those who can do it can get this job. Its no different than actual world. There are platera of jobs that only few qualified can do. But this dont mean that someone with certain talents cannot get this qualifications.
