The Australian is the only magician and escape artist to win FIVE Penn And Teller Fool Us Trophies in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 & 2022 consecutively. She has appeared as the closing act in the Penn & Teller show at the RIO in Las Vegas & states they were a "good" opening act.
Helen admits the key to her success is her father, Arthur Coghlan, who is a magician, escapologist and inventor. She credits his innovative magic for all FIVE wins.
Helen Coghlan (née Gillard) was the FIRST woman to perform on television Harry Houdini's Water Torture Escape & this is the second time she's done so! The first time was in 1987. There’s no way the double lined milk jug fooled them
what i like about her tricks are they are solid old school style tricks. the kind you might expect to find in a home magic set. where you would think Penn and Teller would have both of new to learn. Keep it up, Helen!

The first jug has a pocket that collapses into side when she sticks hand through. The cup doesn’t have milk in the bottom were the rod goes through. Helen only puts a splash of milk in it, and doesn’t tilt it when she drinks out of it. maybe I am wrong, well crafted props. I have seen a street performer do these tricks with a newspaper and a plastic bag he poured beer into the news paper then poured the beer out of the news paper into a white foam cup stabbed a pencil threw the cup then drank the beer. My friend lost his mind, I forgot untill I saw this I was going to do the trick on him next time we were drinking. Haha

Pretty sure if Penn and Teller got fooled it won’t be as easy as you say. I’m sure there are lots of ways she could have done the tricks…
Yea, they weren't fooled.
The first one is a no brainer. Even I figured that out so that didn’t fool me. I mean there is just no way milk (or anything that can fit into that jug for that matter) can’t go through a hole that big.
The 2nd one might be how you said it but as long as you are not 100% sure (you did say you might be wrong), you are considered fooled because I am fooled for the 2nd one.
She gave time to the first milk. Became solid. That’s why she switched to the other trick and then came back. When it was solid. Then poured more on top, then tasted before it got,solid again. Rod went through solid

Extraordinary. They're both good tricks. I'd have liked it more if P&T hadn't just rolled over when she appeared. I had questions to ask and I'm a bit sorry that P&T didn't. Still, I'm looking forward to her next appearance on FU when she fools them for a sixth time!

There is a "trick" to know if they are Fooled or not. If Pen is talking roughly and "aggressively" then they are Fooled - if he just talking kindly about the artist they most likely didn't fool em.
the trick is more to notice the confusion in penn and tellers faces and thinking caps they put on. they get dramatic/"aggressive" when they have a longer relationship with the guest. matt donnely for example didnt fool them and penn cursed the heck out of him.

@@gusteg83 if there are too many exceptions there is no rule. jandro, asi wind, sanjeev, kevin li all which have fooled penn and teller and he was really nice and kind.
if we look at shawn faquahr, at his first fool penn started out nicely, at his second fool where they established a connection between each other penn out right rages at shawn.
there are many more examples where your first statement does not apply. and there are places where he outright rages at someone he does not have any connections too. so basically there is no rule there for how to know. mimic/gestures are the most applicable ones here for they happen naturally and unbeknowns of a person if shocked/astonished.
please dont take this as offense i simply like a nice discussion on a debateable topic where one can underline ones argument with examples/"prooves"

Both tricks were obvious.
You've never fooled them.. your dad did.. and you don't present his work well. She's an insult to so many actually talented performers on the show.

on the tube she poured the pail milk into (1st trick), it looked like she was pushing a button on the top end of the handle, could that have caused the tube to open and close ? ? ?, she covered it up by grabbing with the other hand at the end of the trick......the boys didn't question that or examine the tube..... she got a free pass...shame on P&T
No not enough space for mechanism like that it would have to be inside the wall and watertight
there is no button involved, (at least outside) but she pushes something inside, likely a trapdoor in the wall, which makes an actually rather audible click sound and seemingly needs some force which makes the tube rock a lil.
Pretty sure I know how she did the first one. Not sure about the second, but everytime doors are put in place, shenanigans are likely taking place.
Her dad is a creative genius.

Also love that, just Helen did not fool them here and did not fool the the third time. Both trophies were staged. I dont know about the rest since i did not watch them. Its enough to see these two and how the show is staged because both trophy 3 and 5 could NEVER have fooled them.

How the heck could the glass have fooled them????? Only the top was holding liquid, the bottom was already solid/gel. Even an 8 year old can do that. And i mean that. I had a "wand through the hand" trick as small child which had the same quality. The props are of course great quality, but presenting a almost full "glass of milk" and then taking it away super fast is really Kindergarten-Magic, not fool us :(
And for the tube....please, P&T never have seen pouring liquid in a newspaper? Really?

dont think so. i feel like its false courtesy since they know her and her father for a long time and they do not want her to lose face.... tho letting her through unfairly does make her and them lose face and credebility....
Honestly I don’t think she deserves that much credit , and I wouldn’t call her a good magician. She’s doing something that anyone can do , it’s her father’s creations that deserve to get all the credit . Nothing special about her

Its a new trick that is why it fooled them. As she told in her performance, her dad invented this trick. It cannot be read in any magic books. Penn and Teller usually gets fooled on newly created tricks that are not documented.
I enjoyed the performance, but this was the weakest of the five tricks. The cylinder had a flap to catch the milk that was pushed back into place with her arm. The glass had holes already in it, cleverly disguised by the logo. The pitcher had two chambers. One contained a fast drying white rubber and the other milk. As the white rubber started to dry she performed the cylinder trick. Then she returned to the glass and pressed a hollowed pin through it by twisting. Rotated the glass to hide the hole and pretended to take a drink. The escape cabinets are impressive. This one, although fun to see, is not nearly as good.

these were both simple tricks. the stainless steel jug has an inner and outer sleeve where the volume in that space is more than the volume of liquid and there was a simple pop out pourer inside which she pushed back down with her hand as she went through the jug later. the rod pushed through the glass was even simpler, just two rods, one collapsing rod and one expanding rod coming out the other side, both concealed in the "walls" that she slid into place
My take on the second trick was that there was a solution already in the glass the solidified the milk after she poured it in, that why she went to the tube trick after she poured it. When the she pushed the rod through it was even simpler , once the milk had set, she pushed the tube through a pre existing hole hidden behind the penn & teller logo on the glass.
the glass trick wouldnt have worked with 2 rods, as she does not push it through at the end but she pulls it. and i dont believe magnetism or technology would have worked on such a small space to have both rods move the same speed.
i agree with the post beforehand, solidified milk and a trapdoor/rubberdoor behind the penn and teller logo.

@@arstgera there are many ways... pudding pulver for example. there are some really fast ones.
jello is another option to make it happen and there are enzymes.
basically there are ways to do it. and we do not know if the milk is preheated and treated and so on. maybe its not even milk but some other fluid made to look like milk.

They went pretty easy on her and didn't even make an attempt to debunk the tricks. I've watched a ton of these and they've debunked far more baffling looking tricks than these. To me it seemed highly probable that the silver container had a double wall or false bottom or that opens/shifts when she sticks her hand through and the glass shifts upwards to allow the rod to pass by the stem.
they have to know the exact method. If theres more then one possibility and they arent sure which one it counts as being fooled
Seems like simple tricks, they should at least say one of the ways she could do it.

The audio quality, while terrible, I could tolerate. But why did they have to scrunch it into this crooked, lop-sided frame? This is just unwatchable.
Lets be honest, no matter if this was a man or woman. This "magic trick" was one of the most boring "tricks" i've seen on Penn and Teller. She came with 2 magic tools, which didnt need tricky hands to use. Thats not magic to me. Thats just some engineering/creative items someone made in the free time. Same like the magic toys you got from mcdonalds as a kid from happy meal, where you could do something "magical".
They were unable to bust one of them, thats why she got a trophy. The agrrement she set forth was if you can bust one of my 2 tricks I dont get a trophy (meaning she got them on both so she gets 1 trophy). It'd be different if she asked for 2 trophy's if she fooled them on both!!!!! Beautiful show!!!! Excellent performance and maybe she'll come through with one more!!!!!!! Or maybe bargain for how many trophys to tricks ratio. Either way that was fun to watch!!!
Nah, those aren't the rules. If one of the major moves in any set is unknown then they win. The 'rules changes' are just a bit for theatre.
You know penn is right Alyson doesn't make the rules and neither do he and teller however I do agree with her Helen should receive two trophies instead of one
nah... one trophy is enough... feels like a farse anyway for many viewers. she is a stunningly capable magican but at least one of the tricks should be rather easy to at least make up a theory for pen and teller and act based upon that one. filling a tube/newspaper is a well known trick and penn and teller should have at least been able to guess on that one. the fact that they didnt do it after a speach on how both tricks need to fool them makes it feel like some farse to give her father and her some face....

The rod she used for the milk…can it bend? If so maybe there was a track where it went into the wood and out the other side? The only way since it obviously didn’t break the glass or go through the milk lol her wiping the rod was sort of a giveaway
Wiping the rod was a distraction. It never went thru the glass.

I actually think the glass has holes in it. She is covering the holes on the side when she shows it is a 'normal' glass. The milk, I think, is some sort of custard that solidifies while she does the other trick. The closing of the front gate triggers a mechanism that turns the glass a quarter turn to expose the holes. Later the glass is returned to its original position, when she turns it with the rod through it. Then she rotates the box around the glass while the glass stays in the correct position. I'm not sure, but that's a way it could be done.

depends on the prop and how it is used. pouring a luquid into a tube/newspaper can be rather nice if done properly....... still they make it look like no efford on the magicans side is involved which makes it feel phony
