Also, your first appearance on Fool Us is probably my favorite performance for the truly magical trick and both Penn and Teller's reactions
I'm 29, and if I was on a stage like that, I would crumble into dust. Many props to Seren for performing so well. What a wholesome trick. You fooled me even if I caught a bit of Penn's double-talk. Fantastic job.
It's actually a lot more doable than it sounds! If you practiced enough then when you're on stage you kinda end up on autopilot where you forget about everything that isn't your performance. Haven't specifically done magic but I've done quite a bit of theater so it's similar. I'm not someone who's good socially at all, and I'm terrible at public speaking, like, fumble my words and all, but being on stage doing a performance is completely different. So don't sell yourself short!
you get used to it. I am not a magician but a musician. After doing multiple shows you learn how to be comfortable in the crowd. My point is, you may surprise yourself. If you did a few smaller shows and worked your way up I am sure you could hold your composure
the real question is: Did Alyson really take Seren up on her invitation to milkshakes?

I think this is the first time I've seen a father daughter pair on the show and it's super sweet, Seren is just adorable
Great performance. Nice to see how well Seren held her own on stage... not easy to have that confidence for a teenager to do so in this situation. That level of confidence speaks of a very bright future... whether in magic or doing something else. Impressive.

@@marctronixx Judging by other videos on the family's channel (going back a few years), I'm guessing she's only about 14 or 15 now. But you're right, it didn't seem that way at all when she's on stage. I work in education, and I've known a lot of new teachers (24 or 25 years old) who don't present in front of a classroom with as much confidence. And rather than a classroom, this is in front of far larger TV audience, plus the cameras and lights, etc. Respect to Nathan as well for helping to create this opportunity for her. A great example to all of us Dads!

What a fun presentation, and I love the family aspect of it! Nice also to see another young woman in the magic-verse! We need more of 'em! And it's always sad to see a magic act not fool P&T, because Penn's "I don't think you fooled us" kinda drops an Eeyore cloud on a magician's performance, but Seren's chipper "I don't really care, I got to meet Allison!" recovery was so pleasant and smooth that it turned a negative into a positive, and it was so graceful and I loved that recovery so much! Nice work to you all!

Great trick & performance. Whether fooling the pros or not, it looked like you both enjoyed your time and it looked seamless. The fact that you made it on tape, should give you confidence that you are in the elite group of magicians now, congratulations. Keep pushing forward.
I can’t tell if Penn’s clues confirm or deny it, but my suspicion is that someone is extraordinarily observant, and both of you communicate like only a father and daughter can. ❤
That is very clever, props to you two.
The program works and either something on screen, or an assistant secretly communicates Penn's card. The second card is where it gets nice and clever, the card order has been logged already and it remains unshuffled from that point, a weight on the table determines how many cards are picked up and subsequently the next card in order which is the card that's picked up, and again, either something on the screen changes, an assistant, or both communicate Alyson's card to the Dad who showed it to his daughter on that piece of paper at the end.
The software did not fail. It did figure out which card was missing from the deck hence the “we did it for real”. When the “error” occurs and a bunch of cards are displayed the first and last cards are significant. Everything else on the display is distraction. The suit in the first card matches the missing card. Add the value of the first and last card to get the value of the missing card. An ace on the screen would likely always indicate a 1 so that every card in the deck can be represented by two cards on the screen. In this case the 4 of spades was the first card which establishes that Penn’s card is a spade. The last card is a three of clubs. Ignore the suit and add 3 to 4 to get 7 so Penn’s card is the 7 of spades. Not so sure how he got Allison’s card.

@@anirbanmukherjee5240 Hmmmm… After Allison takes her card there is a momentary camera shot over her shoulder that shows the card that she’s holding.
Right. Penn's card is easy w/computers, like OpenCV. I have no idea how you got Allison's card. That's magical!
And the software knows the order of the cards. Alison signs the next card in the deck which is given to Seren, who passes the number to Nathan who looks up the card before in the software, giving away Alison's card.
As a programmer, I loved the Win95 theme there (though it was missing the system tray!). Very cool trick!
Very cool, it would have totally fooled me had Penn not tipped the method in his fantastic double speak... how he worked that out just shows you the massive weight of his and tellers magic knowledge. amazing and very fooling effect. WELL DONE.
You totally got me on how you knew Allison's card.
Holy smokes, this is the first time I've seen the magician actual talk to his viewers after the clip! *and* you're ok with everyone guessing/analyzing. Impressive all around.
this is the first one i’ve seen where the magicians end their video crediting the people who helped them along the way, which was really lovely to see

Well, I don't know how you did the Allison part of your card trick at all, it was fascinating! And your bit had me laughing many times! I love it! Super cool magic duo!
They still knew the order and the one next to the card she signed would be the one she had.
@@illinialumni Why the card next to the one signed? Alison cut to a random card. Alison then shuffled the deck before picking the top card to sign.
Alison told them which card she had after Seren made a guess which turned out be wrong, then came the reveal that Seren had guessed Penn's card, in the mean time Nathan could write Alison's card on his paper, and pretend to reveal it.
I think it might be a gimmicked deck. Each card has RFID. The Pen is a scanner and it tells them which card is missing. edit: Oh nevermind. They are saying that it was Penn's deck so not gimmicked.

I think part of it is fairly straight forward. You made a piece of software that literally does exactly what you says it does, and then that "random array of cards" that show up on the screen that are incorrect basically tell you the card. The first card displays the suit and the sixth card displays the number.
The second half is a bit more of a reach because I'm thinking there's really only one way I know how to do something like that. BUT for that one way to happen, there would have to have been some editing of the footage by the producers that would have eliminated any moment where the two decks could have been exchanged.
Although, there maaaaaybe is a second way that maybe Penn is revealing. Maybe I need to weigh my options when it comes to my guess.
I really enjoyed the trick! Ignore all the haters... You had me completely stumped at how you found Alyson's card. Though, after reading some of the other comments, I've weighed my options a couple of times and think I understand how it was done. I'm amazed at how quickly Penn and Teller could work it out though!
I think they needed to *weigh* their options when designing this trick in order to *recognize* a method that *scales* well to a Las Vegas stage. I also think that that phone app probably received inputs from more than one source. Cameras, certainly, but also other sources. Imagine if there was an Arduino or an ESP32 and some load cells in that table; what could be done with that?

As for how you did it, while I'm pretty sure I know how you found Penn's card, I'm less certain as to how you found Allison's card. Most folks are guessing hidden camera, but I'm thinking it has more to do with Newtons of down force. But I'm not sure how much weight there is to my speculations.
I just want to make sure that Seren actually got that milkshake.

But that aside, that was a very fascinating trick, a great performance and very cool and wholesome to see how a father and daughter share this passion for magic! As a teenager (and now as an adult :D) I would never have had the confidence to do something like that on stage (let alone on TV) :O Very impressive!

That was a great trick, and I really like the family aspect. To answer your question, the trick was done with teenage intuition! Seren gave that part away. But, I don't understand teenagers and their language. So, what ever that means - but that's the answer! 😀
I usually follow the tricks and try to figure out how they are done, but this time I got charmed by Seren and couldn't pay attention to whatever Allyson did to pick her cards.

The software working for real on a very old Windows interface fooled me :) I thought for sure it wasn't real given processing video to do neural networks recognition would not be possible on old CPU with real time video at 60FPS at any rate. I like how relaxed and casual they were on stage though. Nice trick

You had it backwards. The card finder software was real (and worked), the Windows UI was fake.

It would be pretty simple to put together a software package to scan the cards, identify them, store the order, and note the missing card today (or in 2020). OCR is very capable these days, unlike in the 1980s, especially if you only have 14 things it needs to identify (the characters in the card values and suit symbols that will always be in the same style and format).
The only question would then be how they determined what card Alyson had, which was presumably done with the weight of the deck after the cut.

I tried for awhile to see if that camcorder could possibly be seeing the underside of the cards Allison picks up from its place on the floor, but it simply doesn't seem to be tilted up or carefully placed or anything (Although it is still pointed towards her), so that's prolly not it at all! Plus Allison doesn't lift the cards THAT much; I don't think that angle would even work.
I believe this is an incredibly easy trick. The computer registered the deck figuring out Penn's card. After that, when Allison cuts the deck the position is calculated and compared to the order registered by the computer. After that code words or another assistant relays the card through an ear piece

After reading the comments I think I understand how the trick works. I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed Cardfinder 2000 actually did the work, because for a moment I thought Seren genuinely just figured out the missing card by looking at the cards Penn showed. Would take some practice, but it could add an extra layer to the illusion!

As a dad of a teenage daughter with a very strong relationship, I loved watching this video.
Did the King of Hearts get a selfie?! Having the computer ‘go wrong’ meant it allowed diagnostic tools on stage. As it was the bottom card Alyson was told to select was there a (or several) tiny Bluetooth camera(s) under the baize on the small table that then transmitted the image(s) to Nathan’s phone (which he was studying avidly ‘trying to fix’ things)? I thought Seren went over to get a glimpse of the pic(s) Alyson’s card so the reveal switching was a nice touch. (Or you fooled me!)
7:25 Penn mentions the trick being “a very expensive trick due to things beyond their control on SNL”. Does anyone know what he’s referring to here? Why did it end up being expensive?

Aside from finding Penn's card, I'm not very sure that I've figured out the rest of the trick; I do have a potential solution that would be quite technical indeed, but it wouldn't take very long and I kinda figured that the 45s Seren was spending "fangirling" was probably meant for stalling and not just for the laughs.

I think I've figured this one out. They can find Penn's card because the card finder software works - easy. The tricky part was knowing Alyson's card. It's stands to reason that if the card finder software genuinely works, then 'teenage intuition' also works. It's not science, it's magic.
I think I know the reveal. But I'd have to see the software in action several times.
