In all honesty, this might be the greatest Kentucky Derby victory of all time. The longest shot passes the favorite right at the end. You can’t write a story better than that.
Watch the 2009 Derby. Mine That Bird was in dead last way behind everyone else and won. That one might have been better than this one but this one was great too.
@@TheEnd-eg6wq No, Rich Strike wasn't in dead last except perhaps right out of the gate as he moved across the rear of the field towards the rail to get into position. Legendary call! One of the best ever by a horse track announcer. People have no idea how hard it is to call a horse race with that many horses... Crazy good!

No one was more surprised than the announcer. Even as Rich Strike pulled into show, then place, the announcer was so taken by the two lead horses, he hadn't noticed.
@@richhenson8858 Larry Collmus blows another Derby call. Remember the "Mine That Bird" call??? Same deal: He totally misses seeing what's going on. He calls the narrative he wants, not what is actually happening on the track.
Hungary has become such a joke of a country. Their president and his billionaires bought every news outlet, and just spew state propaganda 24/7 now. Their fascist leader has also gerrymandered the country corruptly, and the media isn’t allowed to mention the president’s electoral competition. I used to respect Hungary, but it turns out they have a majority of idiots/fascists. They’re worse than any major politicians that are far-left or far-right in the USA.
@@blackout07blue Unfortunately, you're right, but no one here cares. I wasn’t talking about politics but about horse racing. And that's how I closed the topic!
For me, it’s always the commentary. That’s what makes these kinds of things exciting. always somewhat euphoric when something like this happens. Story of the underdog
That jockey knew his horse, he navigated the pack like a race car driver and absolutely stunned the other horses with his speed. Fantastic race. One I won't ever forget. And let it be a reminder to everyone, you gotta believe!!!!
I believe it can. The trainer said it needs rest. Preakness is too early for it. Skip the Preakness. Run the Belmont. It can proobe it there hiw goos it is , and many more. California Chrome was a well example of such. Rest kept it running for a long time. It became the number one horse in money earner , until Arrogate took its place.
He has a better chance in the Belmont it's longer then the Derby the Preakness is the shortest triple crown race that's concerns me he could win but the jockey would have to get him closer & start move sooner then the Derby great race he will win again unlike Mind that Bird remember it was a muddy bias track he never won again they were all dry tracks also.
Also the second the jockey (Sonny) sees daylight on the inside on the last stretch and frantically takes advantage - then seeing Rich Strike go all out for the win is spectacular to watch. What an amazing against-all-odds win. What a beautiful horse.
He bounces around a bit before that opening and if you watch him , you can tell he wants to run , the horse actually looks around as if you say who do you want me to run at … so good I loved this race
"...moving like a tremendous machine..!" "...but Secretariat is all alone..!" The Great. The Insuperable Secretariat. Big Red. Belmont '73 I watched it on TV live. I still get goose bumps and arctic chills.
I've probably watched this 10 times or so now and I still can't believe Rich Strike navigated through all those horses and found a way to win that race! One of the best if not the best Kentucky Derby of all time.
The horse didn't navigate through the field, his jockey did. I'm sure you are smarter than that. I have seen it before where a long shot gets an excellent ride and wins.
I've never watched a single Kentucky Derby race in my 22 years here on Earth but this just gave me chills all down my body. "The longest shot has won the kentucky derby" is going right down in history.
Over a year later and this call, this race, this finish just hits like nothing else in sports. I had no $ on it but just the pure raw emotion of watching a horse that no one gave a chance in the world, take everyone down. Its absolutely stunning!
I'm with you. I stopped caring about horse racing decades ago, and had not watched a race for many years. I just happened to decide that I'd give it one more go that day. A year later I am still so glad I did. Saved this link and a couple others incase one goes dead, just so I can see it again sometime. Sports is sometimes truly amazing.
I love how he moved to the right in between horses like a running back juking a safety and heading to the touchdown line, this race was unforgettable by far the most exciting in a long time.
Helluva move at the top of the stretch, he moved inside first, then like you said moved right around that other horse and then took off. The announcer didn't notice until he was level with the leader.
Such a dangerous move, between horses with less than 2 furlongs....UNREAL! And Rich Strike heading away at the end....what a horse! Never got discouraged about being way behind!
Two things: the move the jockey made around the slowing horse on the rail in the last furlong and the fact that Rich Strike came on so fast the announcer barely had time to mention his name once before he won the race. Unbelievable.
He got the obligatory mention every horse gets by the time they they come around the first turn. Not one more mention until he was almost at the wire. Incredible.
You could see that Leon was considering a rail move then decided against it. That was the winning move. Had he waited, he'd have been boxed in and had no chance. Masterful ride.
He almost had a chance to squeak by on the rail, then saw better to be in the clear than risk the shut-out. Great jockey, like driving a sports car, & quick, responsive, & athletic horse!
I am in tears watching this incredible horse. As someone aptly stated below, he never has to win another race. His legacy is cemented forever. To me, this race is right up there with Secretariat's 1973 Belmont race in-terms of raw emotion.
The jockey Sonny Leon did some amazing driving getting through the traffic in the last turn. When the pack swung outside coming out of the final turn, it just sort of sucked them forward and gave them running room. I can almost see the disbelief in both horse and rider, like "holy s**t it's open running!" Beautiful to see Rich Strike cut around the #6 horse and still hold stride. But, to run down the leaders and win going away after that smoking pace shows speed apparently nobody knew this horse had. I grew up going to the Downs and hanging around on the back side. It never gets old.
Did you see the horse looking around, almost in disbelief when that opening came? Then he side-eyes the horse next to him the final few yards. Smart guy. What an exciting race! You're right, it never gets old. :)
Watching that magnificent horse lengthen his stride in the final stretch was like a dream as well. Don’t remember a race like this in a long time. That jockey is going to be a hot commodity after this performance as well!
Very much like Mine That Bird but the big difference is the jockeys. Sonny Leon in his first Derby to put that ride together is just unreal. Absolutely phenomenal!
@@Somethingwittyxs4ku not even that but the race was amazing! In the last 4 spots most of the race, barely mid pack at the final leg. Then hit the jets. One of the best kicks in derby history
@@perserverance333 Exactly, that was some if the best jockeying I have seen in a while an yes this horse was a beast. He had to change course on the fly twice without missing a beat.
That friggin horse looked like a running back cutting back and across mid-stride breaking for daylight, then breaking it open to the end zone! Awesome display of athleticism, horse and jockey.
@@BB-wm4ti Well THAT is how HISTORY is MADE .. WE.. you me THE GUYS we saw it IT WAS REAL AND that JOCKEY deserves whatever he wants MY GOD what a ride... !
That jockey had one of the best rides in the history of the race and the horse completely cooperated and had the massive late kick to get up at the wire. Fantastic job between horse and jockey
This is simply one of the most improbable, nearly impossible, and absolutely incredible feats to have been witnessed in probably an entire generation. Amazing.
I got the same feeling I had when I saw Secretariat run. We may have seen our first taste of true greatness in a long time. That was a thoroughbred moving like a cutting horse in the Kentucky Derby! That jockey is brilliant.🐝🤗❤️
His jockey did a great job of moving him through the pack, especially in the middle where he almost got hung up in traffic, THEN pulled around the fading Messier to get a clear shot at the leaders. Beautiful job.
@@aquafishes it's gotta be one of the more poorly called races that the winning horse isn't mentioned until he's close to the finish line. Too focused on the favorites - not watching the race develop
This was my first ever Derby in person… what an incredible experience to witness such a fantastic union of horse and rider, brilliant strategy & performance.
You could see Rich Strike looking right at Epicenter as they got in the final stretch. Almost as if he’s saying, “Dude, you look tired.” Watching the overheard view, it was one of the best rides you will see. Once the jockey split those two horses and moved to the rail, Rich Strike kicked into full gear. His closing speed was incredible.
Yes, this horse is one-in-a-hundred million. Three times I saw him turn his head sideways to observe his surroundings. The horse and jockey were a perfect team, noticing the exact cracks in the crowd they had to maneuver through. Rich Strike has clever intuition, as well as every other possible quality a horse could have. The owner, trainer, jockey and team knew full well that Rich Strike was a great finisher. Maybe the world's best finisher. Once he moved to the middle of the pack, the team must have known that he had a chance to win.
When Larry Collmus yelled out 'Rich Strike!' you could literally feel the shock in his voice. There are a handful of great play by play commentators across all sports and he is definitely one of them.
@@chadsummerchild3047 granted a bit late to the punch but still a tremendous call. Hearing him say "RICH STRIKE!" and describing the "unbelievable upset" really gets you pumped!
Full credit to Collmus, whether #21 was whispered into his ear at the close, or not. As he ran the entire field after the 1/4 mile, Rich Strike was 18th. A thrill to watch and listen to.
What's impressive about this race is how Sony Leon is trying to place his horse and how to pace his horse, he kept his cool all along. At one point, 1:32, it seemed hopeless, the horse had nowhere to go. But as soon as Leon found an opening he went for it instructing the horse where to go and then run for the line. Absolutely fantastic.
That's what I was trying to watch. Don't watch many horse races, but had to watch this one over and over. Seems the jockey really knew his horse, and how to pace him. He also got lucky with where he was (or darn good placement right when an opening did show up) with a couple of the front horses slowing down. What a kick that darn horse gave at the end. Wow!
I've watched this so many times, and on the stretch I noticed a small detail this last viewing. The jockey on the favorite horse seemed to move side to side whereas sonny was moving up and down with his horse with no added side to side motion.
Love this horse!!! Jockey did the best race EVER!!! Congratulations to the owner and trainer for believing in this wonderful horse and training him to perfection. Heartwarming performance. Somebody forgot to tell this horse, you can't be in last place in the beginning, and be an 80 to1 underdog, and win the Kentucky Derby.
Idk, great ride, a lot of luck for the horses in front of him to run wide at the top of the stretch leaving the rail wide.. But if you watch, he sees it immediately and straighten up his mount on that line.. One horse closed the rail down about halfway down the stretch, but he got around him easily.. Like I said, great ride, and a nice bit of luck it parted like the Red Sea at the top of the stretch..
He was so far back I had to back it up over a dozen times to find him as they entered the final stretch, the most amazing thing I have ever seen in the KD. Just plain WOW!
the fact that he was so far back and had to weave through all that traffic. that last move where he had to get off the rail and go between those 2 horses was brilliant
I'll never grow tired of watching this. Even 20 years down the road I'll rewatch this race and still get goosebumps. One of the greatest moments in sports history and I was alive when it happened. I feel honored❤️
That move by Rich Strike around the 1:53 mark was incredible. I don't think I've ever seen a move like that down the stretch. The horse was blocked on the inside and just went around the blocker and cut back inside. Jockey and horse with some incredible riding.
Watch Rich Strikes looks,.. this horse looks around at the other horses the entire race and basically says,.. Yeah, Not today boys. He Does!!! Watch his head movements. Especially in the Final homestretch. I Swear He Looks at the Other Horses and simply says Buh-BY!! What an Absolute LEGEND of an Animal!
@@ronguerin111 Give the jockey credit too. Looking at the replay I still can't believe that late move. The horse that was blocking on the inside was slowing down big time. U can see Rich Strike have to stop all its momentum to avoid a collision. The skill of that jockey (apologies for not knowing his name) to pull up, avoid a collision, turn right on a dime, pass the blocker and regain the inside with acceleration was the best riding I've ever seen. But I also agree the ability of that horse to regain speed after the block was truly incredible. Typically when that happens so late in the stretch a horse can never recover. Granted I'm just a casual racing fan but I've never seen a move like that. Unbelievable.
That was the sweetest race I've witnessed in a long time. Coming off the gate at 24 and back of pack over came the first six in the last turn...Oh My God! Hats off to the Jockey, Sonny Leon and Rich Strike! Great Job!!
He was in last weaving his way thru the pack but staying close to the rail and that move his jockey did to give him a free lane with no obstruction was just brilliant. You can see him maneuver him as his head is cocked to the right and the horse sees the lane open up and just ruuuuuuuns. Crazy and epic.
Rich Strike is a great horse with explosive power and endurance; Sonny Leon is a GREAT jockey, whose magical maneuver throughout the whole course is a TEXTBOOK case to study! Bravo!
given his "antics" of trying to bite any pony leading him... he's a back alley brawler and probably a P.I.T.A.... Don't care if he cannot win another race. He won the one has wasn't supposed to even be in, only in after multiple forfeits (not just the one last, if I understand right)... after being bought on the lower trade market where you never find Kentucky Derby horses. Apollo... meet Rocky.
Yes, exactly! When he was looking at the leaders I thought he wasn't focused. For fox sake, he was sizing up the leaders right before he turned on the jets. The only horse I've eve seen (film of course) do that was Sea Bisquit. What a thrilling race.
It's like Seabiscuit reborn. They did that in the movie, where Biscuit would look the other horse in the eye and then turn on the afterburners. And like Seabiscuit, this horse was forgotten and unwanted, running in a claiming race and selling for dirt cheap.
I love this American expression 'period' (what we Brits would call 'full stop'), the idea being 'and there's nothing more to discuss'. Until recently, all I could've said about the Kentucky Derby was that I'd heard of it. However, I've just been looking at a few of the others here and have to say that, imho, the comeback of 'Mine That Bird' was every bit as good.
That final turn into the straight-away by Rich Strike and jockey Sonny Leon has to be one of the greatest 'show of heart' accomplishments in sports history. Unbelievable. Incredible. One of the many reasons why people love horses.
I've watched this race maybe 20 times now and it still manages to send a chill up my spine. What a wonderful story and a fantastic victory for Rich Strike, Sonny Leon, Eric Reed, and Rick Dawson. On to the Preakness!
This was a great race, but for me the ultimate is Secretariat's Belmont run for his Triple Crown. He was so far ahead the camera had to zoom out to get the other horses in the shot, and when the track announcer says "He's moving like a magnificent machine!" I get tears in my eyes.
This is one of those rare moments where it was clearly a team win. Rich Strike had all the power and potential and Sonny Leon was able to bring it out and win. Looks like the both of them do best under extreme pressure. Hope to see this team again!
He was steering that horse like a sports car lol. The moves at the end were epic! They way he went around that horse at the end and sprinted to the finish 🙌🏽🙌🏽

Except he completely ignored the horse, even when he was in third place, until the last 5 seconds of the race. Terrible tunnel vision until it was obvious (when Rich Strike took the lead). That's not how a horse race is supposed to be called.

Then it was go time and the horse dipped his head and sent it !! Amazing !!!
I’m such a novice with horse racing but outside of secretariats races I think I just witnessed the best race in my lifetime! Credit to the Horse, Rider and Trainer in that order!!! Unbelievable!

Every time I watch this race it gives me chills. You can see Rich Strike just reaches his speed and could have gone farther. He was just picking it up and got into it...amazing horse! And for the jockey to be able to control him through that stretch took so much strength. What a race!!
This is a race I will never forget. They said this horse never had a chance to ever win the derby. I love that he won! Congratulations Rich Strike, your jockey and your owners.
Leon rode the horse so smartly through the race. Conserved energy while the rest of the pack was blistering. Made his move at the perfect time and while the rest of the pack was getting slower, he kept right on running at his pace and won the whole dang thing at 80-1. The only way you can describe the jockey's ride was that it was art.
Exactly. He knew exactly what he was doing. Can't push them too hard, too soon, or they'll get tired and fall behind. Like you said, they gotta conserve their energy, and then at the exact right moment, make their move. It's not easy.
A bit o' racing luck helps too, since he was boxed in coming around the final turn. Following Messier to the rail was a good move, but that sharp veer to then go around him risked possible interference. Incredibly, Rich Strike seemed to not lose stride, I can't tell if he even changed leads...just powered forward with plenty of crop encouragement. Shame on the announcer for missing the real drama in the race.
@@furthur447 so true! You always take a chance when you take back at the start that there won’t be enough room if you save ground. Everything played out right.

My mom was a steeplechaser in her youth, and as we were "Baltimorons", she took me to Pimlico to see Secretariat win the Preakness in 1973. Big Red also typically lounged at the back of the pack till the final turn, then scampered to the front for the win.... Our moms are petting ALL the horses in heaven, I'm sure.
I watch a horse named Secretariat win the Kentucky Derby. He went on to win the triple crown. This is what I remember watching. True poetry. This horse was playing until he saw the finish line. Great jockey. He rode this animal and put him where he needed to be.
So cool to watch Rich Strike turn his head in all directions to look around at the other horses! You could almost see what he was thinking as the race unfolded. Most horses keep their heads almost straight ahead the entire race. It even looked like he started eyeing down the leader at 1:53 thinking 'I'm coming for you' as he caught up down the final stretch! Reminds me of Usain Bolt looking around during races at the Olympics!
@@jeffholland1556 1:54 until he gets side by side with the leader is the best part of it to me. That isn't the jockey turning his head - that is him starting at the leader until he got side by side! So fun to watch.

I watched a race years ago when two horses went down. One had to be euthanized. Now I wait until after the race so I know everybody came out of it OK, and then watch it on TH-cam.
My dear friend, an OTTB who died in 2020 at age 25 is still living in Rich Strike. They are both out of Nasrullah! I've probably watched this 20 times by now and cry every time. A legend is reborn!
Larry Collmus just gave one of the finest moments in sports announcing history! I don't keep up with horse racing but watch replays anytime a big upset or excitingly close race happens. The call by Collmus is so utterly perfect I have watched this at least a dozen times now and his call coming down the final stretch gives me major goose bumps EVERY time! As exciting of a race as one could ask for with an announcer who's voice, tone and inflection matches every second of excitement perfectly!
I read an article on him and the amount of time he has to spend to get ready for every race. A real pro. Being able to call off those 20 names in that amount of time.
"Utterly perfect?" I don't know about that. He didn't even seem to notice Rich Strike at all until AFTER he took the lead. You could see him moving toward the wire, but Collmus ignored him until the end.
And don't get me wrong - he's the ultimate pro at his job, I just thought it a little less than perfect that he either didn't notice Rich Strike moving or discounted it. He was still calling it like a two-horse race when RS had already pulled up to the lead.
@Mark Johnson I’ve noticed announcers sometimes have a hard time catching late runs down the rail. One of the examples that comes to mind is the 09 derby. Mine That Bird was absolutely flying down the rail going unacknowledged until he pulled away by at least a length. This call was similar to that one . However, I do think Larry’s call was much better than the 09 derby call. LC caught on quick and delivered a fantastic line as Rich Strike crossed the finish line. I really enjoyed this call but I do think he’s had better ones throughout his tremendous career. That’s just my opinion tho, anyways it was a great Derby 🙌
Mind That Bird also came in flying and the announcer seemed to be out of words. He kept talking about the front runners but didnt see The flying one in the inside. Borel was the Jockey.
The move this Jockey put on and the control and passion the horse exhibited are INCREDIBLE. That shift he made right before the final turn, then his maneuvering down the stretch is breathtaking.
I'm still thinking if this really happened, I'm thankful to be alive and to have seen something as extraordinary as this race, it will take more than 100 years for something like this to happen again.
Wow, that was the most exciting race I've ever seen! Rich Strike made all the right moves and went for the openings. The horse was looking right at the leaders and then he turned on the gas.
Hilarious that the announcer is so focused on the top 2 and doesn't even notice Rich Strike moving through the field so quickly until he almost crosses the finish line.
Me neither. But that was awesome. We were at my local dive bar with about 50 other patrons. We turned it up and watched. The whole place erupted at the end !
I’m not into horse racing but I always watch the Kentucky Derby. No matter what happens it’s always interesting. “The most exciting two minutes in sports” is not an empty boast. And if this race isn’t one for the history books I don’t know what is.
I own a thoroughbred but no longer watch racing because I think it pressures horses when they are too young (the three years are really only two years old and some months) but after covid shut down everything... I thought I would watch the Derby this year! Boy am I glad I did. What a superb job of riding by that jockey! Judging by his actions after race as he was being ponied back that horse had a lot more gas in his tank but we will see in the Belmont which is longer than the Derby. Well done!!!
honestly think that was the best ride i've ever seen, and how RS was literally staring down the other horses, then he put his head forward and i could see the burst of acceleration.
I caught that on the stretch. He was looking right at Epicenter and the moment he caught him, looked straight ahead for the win. I had Epi to win, place, and show. Man what a race!
Love how the stadium cheers erupted when they saw Rich Strike steaming through. I'm sure most of them lost their bets but they recognized the moment for what it was and enjoyed it anyways.
If you're a true horse racing fan, you can withstand a loss for the sake of an amazing spectacle! And honestly, who doesn't love an underdog(horse) story?!
True racehorse fan knows that losing a bet is nothing than seeing a miracle that just happened. Seeing the favorites won over and over again is nothing but boring things to see. But seeing a whole new horse you barely ever heard of, barely know of, just winning a big race like that is unbelievable.
I was actually there and the crowd volume went down quite a bit. People were STUNNED. Barely anyone bet on this horse because he wasn’t even racing until just before it started. A lot of money lost, to be sure, but what an amazing race!

Helluva move at the top of the stretch, he moved inside first, then like you said moved right around that other horse and then took off.
The announcer didn't notice until he was level with the leader.
Yes indeed.
Yes I seen that too. Rich Strike blow right pass that horse and jockey.

Absolutely 💯
I agree!!! I don't care if he ever wins another race!!! That was the race of a lifetime!!! He pulled off a shocker and proved everyone wrong!!!
It never gets old.
Yes, he really pulled that horses head to the right to get him to move, don't think I have ever seen something like that before.

It is unbelieveable that he lost no momentum passing Messier near the rail near the end.
Thank you for that. Exactly what I saw too... just incredible.
If you watch at the beginning ,he’s watching the cheering crowds. So funny.
I tend to think the fast pace tired those horses out and they had no reserve to tap and Rich Strike was still fresh. Great ride by the jockey.

Reminds me of 2009 with Mine that bird
@@gazewonderer yeah bro it does
Mine That Bird was better. Watch the overhead view of that race
Once in a lifetime race with that move and finishing off strong horses.
I can't stop watching this. Absolutely incredible. What a horse, this will be turned into a movie im sure of it.
That horse gives me the chills, what a story & beautiful moment that will last forever. 🙌🙌🙌
Yeah, I hear clicking of keystrokes in a computer whilst someone's busy writing a new movie screenplay. Very exciting stuff!
I’ve watched it 100x. Greatest sport in the world. The only sport the brings me to tears on a regular basis. These animals are incredible.
I've watched the race 5x now. It's an amazing performance. And watching the race, by watching that red/white #21, makes the win even more impressive. He was in the back 6 or 7 horses for 80% of the race. WHAT A RUN!!!!
I don’t even watch derby and at the beginning you can see they weren’t really using up all their energy and made an amazing move to the fence line around that last turn and then the way he lead his horse around the block was insane !!! Then it was go time and the horse dipped his head and sent it !! Amazing !!!
He was 18th-19th for close 5 furlongs
They went out in 21 and 3 and 45 and 1. It’s not a surprise that it set up for a closer…it’s a surprise as to which closer it was. Suicidal pace.
I could watch a million times in a row and never be disappointed!
This jockey did an amazing job maneuvering Rich Strike through all the field. What horsemanship!! Great Win !!
2:03 The emotion and intonation in his voice when he says 'Rich Strike.'
It's simultaneously shock, surprise and excitement. Outstanding call.
That part he was in shock
He was focusing on the other two and didn't even notice Rich Strike sneaking up on the inside. What a finish.
You're absolutely right!!!
The announcer was not watching the entire race at all. Only had eyes for the two he thought would win.
Terrible call
I’m such a novice with horse racing but outside of secretariats races I think I just witnessed the best race in my lifetime! Credit to the Horse, Rider and Trainer in that order!!! Unbelievable!
Totally agree. There will never be another Secretariat but this was amazing.
Secretariat is the GAOT period...LOL
I can't get over he looked at the crowd and then it made him then look forward and burst into final speed past the finish line.
@@groupersti so right dale,so right.
Absolutely agree with you. This was amazing. Testament to never give up EVER!!!
The ride of a lifetime!! This video never gets old!! 🐎
Jockey was going around horses like a car on an interstates - incredible ride!
Or like in video games!! That was insane!!!
Underdogs forever!
Exactly how I put it
Like he was on I 90 late for dinner. 😊
Segundo jinete Venezolano que gana esta carrera. Primero fue Gustavo Avila con CAÑONERO II en 1971
Indeed! Watching the depth the Jockey had to go in and out...Perfect!
This will forever stand as one of the greatest moments in all of sports and broadcast history. Truly remarkable!!! Bravo to the jockey, the trainer, and everyone involved! Truly truly incredible!!!!
What about the abuse of the horses?
You do realise they only came into existence because the sport exists right?
@@gerrycoleman7290 what you talking about Willis
@@gerrycoleman7290 I wonder what Tash Peterson would say about this horse race.
It's a stupid horse race. Get a grip.
Brought tears to my eyes. Great race for that little baby boy. Congrats to them. 🐎
The greatest sports call in history !
Larry Collmus is legend.
Every time I watch this race it gives me chills. You can see Rich Strike just reaches his speed and could have gone farther. He was just picking it up and got into it...amazing horse! And for the jockey to be able to control him through that stretch took so much strength. What a race!!
Go watch the overview on this race it's crazy how Sonny maneuvered Rich Strike
This is a race I will never forget. They said this horse never had a chance to ever win the derby. I love that he won! Congratulations Rich Strike, your jockey and your owners.
Congratulations you won at least that's good 🥰nice to meet you with all due respect
@@furthur447 And it is amazing that the call of the race was blown like that.

Seriosuly I come back every couple months and it always gets me going
My 10yo watched this and thought about it for a minute….. looked at me and said,
“He never gave up.” Brought a tear to my eye.
You fortunate person, living with such a concise thoughtful person cos he got that right in spades!
Every year I would watch the Derby with my mom. She LOVED horses! Her favorites were the horses that come out with the competitors. She’d always remark how beautiful they were. We’d make our picks & she always ended up picking an underdog. That’s was the fun of it for her. This is the first Derby we didn’t get to watch together. I pray she was able to see the result! She would’ve loved this so much! Miss you!❤️ 🐎
Love to you and your Mom!!!
What beautiful memories & what a beautiful comment! Thank you for that. It genuinely means a great deal. ❤️
Shes watching with you sweetheart. Shes watching with you! 🥰
I watch a horse named Secretariat win the Kentucky Derby. He went on to win the triple crown. This is what I remember watching. True poetry. This horse was playing until he saw the finish line. Great jockey. He rode this animal and put him where he needed to be.
He was so fast at the end the Belmont should be almost automatic. Preakness will be a challenge though. He can’t wait on that one.
I wish I was alive to see Secretariat win the Belmont.
I laugh with joy when the announcer realizes that Rich Strike has taken the lead. 🙂
@Hello how are you doing?
Bite, nip, race not over til I taste the other horse
🤙🏿
I thought the same thing. Hes looking right at the others as he goes by. The jockey ran the end perfectly.
He's on dope!
@@jeffholland1556 1:54 until he gets side by side with the leader is the best part of it to me. That isn't the jockey turning his head - that is him starting at the leader until he got side by side! So fun to watch.
This was one of the very best races I’ve ever seen. Got to love a twist ending.
80 to 1 odds.

That was an incredible ride, that jockey was amazing. Blocked in the entire race and somehow found that hole and just went for it. What a heart that horse has, never once gave up.
This is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen! This horse and rider are truly a team… such grace, spirit, and dedication, and determination! I literally cried the first time I watched it!!
You are not alone Beth. I'm as macho as any man can be, and I also got some tears after watching this heartwarming performance. I love Rich Strike.

This was an incredible race! Did you notice, that even close to the wire, the announcer did not even notice !!! that Rich Strike was closing fast on Epicenter until he passed him! It was like Rich Strike was invisible. And the Rich Strike’s jockey was incredible! What a race! Great jockey and horse team !! Glad all the horses came through the race safely too. Another Calumet red horse blasts his way to fame!
last year Rich Strike ran in a 30,000 dollar claiming race and the trainer and owner claimed him
The announcer didn't notice..I sure didn't the first time I saw this..lol. watched it three more times trying to watch him before the finnish line. This could be the greatest race since Secreteriat in 1973.

@@daltonchandler6446 Almost as though he didn't see him coming JUST LIKE NOBODY SAW THIS COMING!
Just watched it again, and I still love that the announcer didn't even see Rich Strike until he moved into first place. This will be a classic race.
@@ForeverFREE2024 definitely a race to remember. Its incredible, because even when I rewatch it I don't think he can win LOL
Best ride in racing history. Absolutely brilliant, Sonny Leon.
God Himself put wings on Rich Strike, for His own reasons,His ways are past finding out.
I keep watching it over and over and it gets better every time.
Wow, that was the most exciting race I've ever seen! Rich Strike made all the right moves and went for the openings. The horse was looking right at the leaders and then he turned on the gas.
Yes. He pulled up to the lead horse, gave him a "what ya got?" look, and dropped the hammer. Incredible.
That was definitely the best part. You could see the right eye look right at them
It was almost like he was taunting them. What a Horse!
Hilarious that the announcer is so focused on the top 2 and doesn't even notice Rich Strike moving through the field so quickly until he almost crosses the finish line.
I said the same thing! He's half even with the second place horse before the announcer says anything!
@@NoDayBut2Day76 Well I think Tom Durkin still hasn't seen Mine that Bird.

I am not a horse-racing fan: but that was just amazing. What a phenomenally exciting race.
I can watch this a thousand times, and it’ll never get old. Amazing ride! Amazing win!
I have watched this countless times and it always brings a smile to my face. What a great race by jockey/horse and call by the announcer.
@Hello how are you doing?
It's like a perfect game in baseball. Your team could be the one getting shut down, but it doesn't matter, you're witnessing history.
I was actually there and the crowd volume went down quite a bit. People were STUNNED. Barely anyone bet on this horse because he wasn’t even racing until just before it started. A lot of money lost, to be sure, but what an amazing race!
Nice comment.
