So glad to see Mine that Bird get some respect! I've met him twice, most recently at Ruidoso Downs last year in celebration of his 10 year Derby anniversary. He stood patiently for 1.5 hours as we had our picture taken with him! Also met him at his home in Roswell! LOVE THIS GUY!
What a horrible race call. Bloke should be calling in a bingo hall. What a hack. But he is a yank so what do you expect?
@@Hoodoo04 Tom Durkin was a good caller...he just missed the move, as did the British track announcer for the track (his call is here on YT). ..he said that he thought he saw a move but never really called it out because he wasn't sure...until Bird finally cleared. I've watched the race over and over and I STILL have trouble sometimes seeing him start his move... In real time, from that booth, with binoculars....it would have been easy to miss...and actually, I think the messed up call at the end actually makes Bird's run even more special!! Everyone was totally shocked and I give Tom a break on his endearingly "human" missed call!

Happy that he has retired and I always will love that he could be at the back of the field and come home strongly and win like the Champion he is.
I also loved his antics in the gates when they would fly open and he refused to run lol .

...I just don't know where his speed comes from though? Like, every animal on this planet (including us humans!) has their own limitations. -How certain Biomechanics do, or don't work.
TB Horses for example; have a general maximum speed, that stays pretty much the same for ALL TB's. Even really good Racers can't go much above or below this "general speed", because their Biomechanics just don't/won't allow it. (A lot of it depends on the Jokey, position in the Race, and certain external conditions too. Ofc) But CHATAQUA literally glides past them from LAST, to the front, out of nowhere -- making the rest look like giant tortoises 😆 Like they're actually moving slow (when in reality - they're definitely not)
TL;DR: I am just wondering "what" about this horse, allows him to move so fast, all in a matter of 5 seconds....

God, I love horse racing. I only went one to Hollywood Park with my dad, many moons back, but I can remember the exciting energy...horses brought to starting gate, serious gamblers chewing at the bit, superstitious, calculated, name, color, numbers are all applied to the art of betting. Horses are in ready, snorting breathe from their efficient nostrils plays in the air, jockeys set their seat for the ride, sound opens the gate, the announcer says the words “They’re Off”! Everyone’s eyes are huge with anticipation as they listen to the race-caller’s incredible telling of the race.
I was at Sha Tin when Chautauqua won from the back, it was insane, people were nearly ripping up their tickets after the first few furlongs.
Those folks had likely had never actually watched the champ prior to that race. Pretty normal for him
He ran every race like that , the fact that he was a notoriously bad starter didn't help so kind of had to , jumped last every time ..... Well when he loaded that was , sometimes wouldn't go in the gates at all , other times stood still when they opened & didn't run

To see a horse come from dead last to win the race is just simply amazing!

I love Australian racing--I could watch Winx all day, and so many horses she ran against were true powerhouses in their own right. It'd be fun to see a foal out of Winx by Happy Clapper because she kept beating him by lengths or noses but by god he always came back game.
Then there's Phar Lap. Cannot say more.

Was lucky enough to see her a few times at the track, her 3rd Cox Plate was a privilege. (Saw Black Caviar and Chautauqau win Tommy Smiths too, and special mention to the OG mighty mare, Sunline😍 total opposite of all these horses in the vid🤣

I've never been to a horse race b4 n I saw this horse(Chautauqua) race in a like a boss vid compilation and I just had to see the original and I can tell that horse is not ordinary, that last race of him seemed like he's was running on air, so smooth n elegant, makes me wish I knew how to ride a horse or knew more about horses for that matter, JUST WOW!

How fitting that Chautauqua appears twice in this compilation. The champion with the afterburners. Let's hope he does well in his new career in showjumping...watch this space.
And the miighty Kinstown Town deserves a spot especially the finish in the 1982 Cox Plate where Australia's best ever race caller gave him no chance with 300 metres to go.
Cardiactaugua. Not that familiar with him, but did he always leave it that late?
I thought he was showing more generally but I might be operating on the initial 'oh well let him down and start flat work' which is any half decent jumpers precursor anyway. But I wouldn't have wanted to be involved with him when they weren't confident he'd pull off those sorts of wins

Chautauqau makes it in the list twice👌👌👌 Winx is the best horse I've seen at the track, but damned if The Grey Flash wasn't the most exciting. Those two races were unreal. Both the 2nd horses had the run of the race. Anyone that backed English will still be watching the replay 🤣 Great vid, all 8 were sensational 👌
The Mine That Bird one always makes me smile. Borel cut through the field like he was riding a motorbike!
Eddie18ification I loved that race... the horse that came to Church Hill Downs in a bumper pull trailer. Sloppy track and the “old man” Calvin Barrell pulls it off !! I still remember his mud splattered face, grinning from ear to ear, spectacular !!
Calvin said that the horse did his own path through the pack...it was all on his own, Calvin was along for the ride. Bird was bumped at the start so Calving decided to drop back and keep him out of the mud flying back...I think Bird was seeking revenge that day!

One of the best things about Mine That Bird is that A) he was 50-1 and B) at multiple times he's so far back that Tom Durkin forgets to mention him
Durkin never once saw him while he was rallying and didn't call him until he had a clear lead. Terrible call.

It's amazing what it takes to be a backmarker jockey. All credit to those who are more comfortable riding leaders, but to be able to time a run to perfection from the back of the field is something special. Too early, the horse gets too tired by the post. Too late, you settle for second. Every single one of these winners was timed to absolute perfection.

Although Zenyatta lost the 2010 Classic, the way she closed to only lose by a nose was absolutely incredible and such an underrated race
She had something like 32 lengths to make up, wasn’t it? Imho it was pilot error, but I had to wonder if the night race, plus the kickback, also had a hand in it. Either way, I think that was her greatest race. If there had been even three lengths left she would’ve won.
@@mikaelafox6106 ~ Mike Smith admitted it was pilot error. Zenyatta had no way of knowing how long the race was. She did what was asked of her in spectacular fashion, as always. She was just asked a little too late. She would have had it in another stride or two. That was very obvious.
Boospoochie Yes, I remember him admitting that. He seemed just as torn up about it as I felt, and I didn’t even have a horse in the race! She always freaked me out with her come from behind sweep. ☺️ You can’t win them all, after all.

He didn't see him until he was well clear. I've seen an overhead shot of the race and it's thrilling how nimble and brave the Bird was.

@@ianmontgomery7213 saw a video on him through one of the racing groups on FB, it's a nice reminder of how many TBs in Australia, raced and unraced do actually end up in performance/pleasure riding homes afterwards. It's not a perfect balance of supply and demand but I have known so so many even in QLD where the state programs for ex racehorses and the like aren't as big as NSW and VIC. We've had five ourselves (still have my never raced mare) and known many more. Sorry I've rambled a bit

@@WorldHorseRacing Announcer actually misses him twice :) MTB was so far in last at the beginning of the race he got left out of the call at first and barely got mentioned a second later. Cracks me up
Such a long shot. I later saw a picture of him, Mine That Bird became a trail horse after his racing career was over, which is a pretty big transition!

Also finished 4th to Secretariat in the derby.
I'm proud to say that I backed Winx first up in the Gold Coast Guineas which started her amazing 33 consecutive wins! That one was also a last to first victory! As a great supporter of the theory that the majority of winners are in the first four with 400 metres to run it only proves how exceptional horses like Winx and Chatachua were!

It wasn't his usual style, but Arrogate's last to first sweep of the Dubai World cup was something to see.

Yes it was a good race. But do you remember California Chromes win before Arrogate won. California Chrome won with his saddle slipping back with the girth almost to His flank. Any other horse would have stopped and bucked the rider off. California Chrome was spectacular in that race. I never saw or ever will again see such a performance as that.

Affirmed and Alydar, first and second respectively in all three of the 1978 Triple Crown races, was a heart racing thriller of a show!
Zenny's '09 BCC & the '78 Belmont are my all-time favorite races. When you've watched it 50 times and can recite the call in your sleep, but your heart rate STILL skyrockets, that's a legendary race.

It's quite a bit older than these, but Veandercross' win in the 1992 Mackinnon Stakes would be about the best I can recall seeing in Australasia from a horse in a genuine Group 1 field with middle distance stars from a horse that was a star itself. He missed the start, got checked at the 600m, 400m, and approximately the 150m. Two of those checks had his back end going for a bit of a skate and the other he had to get his head right on the side to get through the small gap. He didn't get clear air until the race was almost over. It would be about the only "how did that horse win that" moment from this part of the world that I would put ahead of Lonhro's Australian Cup and Kingston Town's third Cox Plate win. Definitely worth a look for those that haven't seen it or who are unfamiliar with racing Down Under.
Come to think of it, another classic win from 1992 was Rough Habit's Stradbroke Handicap win. That was a master class in weaving through the field from last, through gaps a miniature horse would struggle with. Rough Habit was one of the stars Veandercross had to defeat in his MacKinnon Stakes win.

Lonhros win in the Australian cup has to be the best win you'll ever see. Sprint race, against good horses. Brilliant.

I cannot forget this day. I was at Santa Anita watching by the rails on the final turn as Zenyata made that move...OMG...I am not really an pony guy....been to this track only a few times because it was there...I was sure glad I was there with my GF on that day for this historic race
When you look at Chataquas finishes and you see how far winx beat him by. It just goes to show how much of a freak she truly was. The best to ever do it!
I don't even know how I got here but I couldn't stop watching. I love autosport, so I think it's just a love for all racing.
Another of my favorites is Strike the Gold in the 1992 Nassau Handicap. He just held off Pleasant Tap, who was charging on the inside.

The Greatest horses like Winx etc prove they are given that title by winning not just by being held up for a run, but by doing the nearly possible and winning when all hope seems lost. And the jockeys play just as big a part in these unbelievable victories too.
Winx and Zenyatta, no matter how far back they are...only a fool would ever count these two queens of the turf "OUT"

I have to agree watching documentary of that horse was amazing and how far that horse is always make a come back is amazing.

Aside from Chautaqua's and Pakistan Star's races, the rest were middle to longer distance races. Chautaqua's races were at 1200m at Group 1 level against top line sprinters. Is much harder to come from so far behind in sprint races. No disrespect intended to the other horses

Secretariat in the 1973 Belmont Stakes is my favorite.
Astrologer Patricia Yeah, but he was leading the whole time, so not really a come from behind race. But it does give me chills every time I watch it.
Leslie I’ve seen it. The comment says Belmont, which he leads the entire time. But yes, his Preakness was pretty cool. He just charges up. I still wouldn’t consider that as much of a come from behind, as he wasn’t last, and he really wasn’t that many lengths off the leader. But it was still an impressive race.

Drug Horse
Zero Fuks What do you mean? Like he used drugs? Because they had some pretty strict guidelines back then. He was so amazing because of his heart. It was way bigger than a normal Thoroughbreds. He won because he really did have more heart than the others.
I know it wasnt come from behind, but Id still say Secretariat's Belmont Stakes was certainly a 'crazy finish' if only for how utterly impossible it should've been!!
Especially bc Secretariat actually /was/ a come from behind horse, so for him to so spectacularly lead like that was a race like no other.
Uh.... they don't call them "Secretariat's" anymore... they call them "Flight Attendants"
Pakistan Star is always Best. Really Special Horse, Strong and Crazy Minded 💐
I think a collection of the finishes of Forego would be spectacular! He always came from out of the clouds like a freight train!

@@gregrambo606 No. Trevor is good but he is not the best in America. That would be Tony Calo. He used to call at Golden Gates years ago and for the last decade has been calling races at Finger Lakes. Tony is a master of his craft he doesn't call races he describes them perfectly with the excitement only know to a racing fan. Because he is in a minor track he will never be recognized but trust me that guy is the best by a mile.
Zenyatta 's Breeders Cup may be my favorite of all time. Arrogate's Dubai Cup surely deserves to be in this greatest come-from-behind compliation.
The grey flash in the tj smith the greatest win at Randwick in the last 20 years he got out 13 dollars of the back of an average 3rd I think in the all aged stakes I was never in doubt. champion . Greatest sprinter ever
To add even more merit to that win nothing was coming from the back that day (hence the betting drift)
There are many phenomenonal thoroughbred backmakers who do great coming up the straight and win and that is Great to see those horses do that....Those horses that people seem to underestimate are the ones that love to watch race. 🐴👍🏼😉
It’s probably not in the top 8 “freakish finishes” but I always thought Prince Bishop’s World Cup win is underrated as hell. Couldn’t keep up early but put them away in the straight. He did kinda creep into the race though so yeah not really the freakish finish but a terrific win

You cannot underestimate the power of drafting and the horse power it can create, great examples in these races
Lonhro in the Australia Cup. Checked twice in the last 250m, the second of which required a 90 degree correction to find a clean run.. in a stacked field full of champions.. put on the afterburners to win it by a nose.. insane
Chautauqua was an absolute beast.
Arazi in the breeders cup Juvenile was absolutely breathtaking
Calisdoscopio in Brooklyn Handicap 2013(with ten Years old) was the most unbelieve race. He was lást(more than 40 lenghts from the first).
You have to give enormous credit to Tommy Berry who rode Chautauqua. He must have been an absolute nightmare to ride: an out and out sprinter who just dropped himself out and refused to get into top gear until the last furlong.

Zenyatta the most amazing Athlete I have ever seen !
Pity you didn't include Calidoscopio, because that old stallion usually ran like that. While his Brooklyn Handicap is legendary, he had done much the same in winning the previous Breeders Cup Marathon. Winx usually did an outside pass of the field from last coming into the finishing straight, with fantastic acceleration over the final furlong or two.
Yeah that was the best ever in my opinion. Calidiscopio!
The 3rd TJ win by Chautauqua is the greatest race I've ever seen. Had a bet on it and threw the ticket out with 200 to go. Gives me chills every time I watch it. Also have to wonder why they don't hire an Australian race caller to do the big American races. Ruins a good race when the race caller doesn't see the winner until it is 4 lengths ahead.
Champ at Cheltenham today was a great finish also
IMO Zenyatta's 2010 BC was an even more amazing finish than her 2009 win! She dwelt coming out of the gate due to dirt kicked in her face (she was a synthetic horse) and soon found herself 18-20 lengths behind the field in the backstretch. She didn't even show in the picture for most of the race! By the time Mike Smith started moving her she was late to the final turn and then found herself held up by Quality Road and had to swing wide losing even more ground to Blame. That final stretch run she was running down Blame and would have passed him in the next stride. She was the best horse on the track that day! None of those other horses could have made up that distance. Blame had an easy ride on the rail and she still ran him down. She was the best horse I ever saw race outside Secretariat.
The Best crazy run was done by Calisdoscopio(9years*** from Argentina) in the Marathon(Breeders Cup)

jamie Elizabeth Yeah, but it was such a long shot, and he had even forgotten about the horse earlier. He was dirty, and came up fast. And calling races is so hard anyways, I would cut the guy some slack.
retired from calling the kentucky derby 2 years later partially because of how embarrased he was of that

He was looking through binoculars. Calvin managed the impossible by weaving through the horses and the commentator did not have the view that everyone in the stands did.

When you analyse the quality of the field that he was up against, and where he came from - I'd put Rough Habits 92 Stradbroke right up there with the best.

As far as CRAZY competitive, I usually go to the bobbing noses of Easy Goer and Sunday Silence matching paces down the stretch in the 1989 Preakness Stakes as THE most exhilarating race I've ever seen!

My personal favorite crazy wins come both from Danedream. 1.) her victory at the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe when she beat all the other horses as the biggest outsider and broke the track record back then. 2. when she won the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes just by the length of a nose and even the staff refused to believe that Danedream is the first german winner of this race.
Sorry, I'm just a huge Danedream fan and she'll forever be my favorite racehorse.

@@WorldHorseRacing You're welcome. I think it's a shame that she gets almost no international recognition. After all she went from a horse that was unsold in the auction, afterwards sold for only 9.000€ (approx. 10.000$) and said to be too small and fragile built to become a great racehorse to a champion that not only won the race that you can call the world championship of horseracing, but broke the track record as well. To me she's a true queen of the race track.

Dancing Brave flying past 10 other Group 1 winners, Powering up the centre of the track in the 1986 Prix de Le Arc de Triomphe. Goosebumps every time I see it, and Iv'e seen it a lot! Also Pebbles the Champion filly coming from nearly last along the inside rail to win the 1985 $2,000,000 Breeders Cup Turf. Awesome memories. Love Phar Lap,

2004 Lohnro winning the “Australian cup”, getting squeezed and checked at the 300m then have to side step two horses, pick back up and then winning by nearly a length best race I’ve ever seen.
None of those even came close to Calidoscopio in the 2013 Brooklyn Handicap. NONE !!!!!
