    Just as a point of reference, those black square COTS stencils (Clean-Oil-Test-Stencil) were federally mandated in 1972; the little yellow dot was mandated in 1978 to show that the car did not have bad wheelsets, which were a problem and caused derailments (sort of a factory recall). Bottom line; this car could not be operated on a layout that models any earlier than 1978.

    That car has a lot of good detail for the price point.

    I am unable to uncouple the Kadee cars that have a cushioned underframe while using the under track magnets. All of my other rolling stock work correctly but these and the walthers cars that have the swing coupler pockets are impossible to uncouple.

      Part of the problem is the brake hose which interferes with movement of the mating coupler glad hand. Bend the hoses outward or if you don't really care, cut them off.

      Interesting. I haven't tried using the magnetic uncoupling feature on this car. Now I'm thinking maybe that's something I could test for in the future. I'll have to consider it. Thanks for watching!

    Great review Dan, having Opening doors give the model realism to the layout and that couplers moving back and forth is awesome too

      It is nice to have the option to open the doors. Thanks for watching!

    Another great review. Working hydra-cushion with KDs makes this $31.19 model an operational "best buy" IMHO. BTW, when measuring the length of a car like this to calculate "recommended practices" NMRA weight, do you measure the car length from corner to corner or do you measure from coupler shank to coupler shank to apply the NMRA formula? Weight (in ounces)=0.5x car length (in inches)+1 (a.k.a. divide length by 2 and add 1 to get weight). Some modelers deliberately add an extra 0.5 to 1.0 ounce to give a slightly extra feel of mass and/or better tracking for extra-long consists.

      I measure the car body, not the couplers. Sometimes I add a little extra weight to my cars, too. Thanks for watching!

    LOL... Kadee can't get the coupler height correct on their own cars. I do have a couple of these Kadee cushioned underframe cars, but they don't play nice with my uncoupling magnets. So I CA'd them in place - problem solved. Great review as always, Dan.

      Someone else mentioned that problem, too. I haven't got any way to test that right now, but it's got me thinking about it. Thanks for watching!

    I just bought this car because I grew up near the Potomac Yard in Alexandria Virginia and actually got a special tour while in High School and wrote a research paper on the RF&P and Potomac Yard. Like you said can't believe they got the coupler height wrong !!!! I miss those truck springs. They were cool. Nice review Dan.

      It's a neat car. I'm sure the yard tour was great. Thanks for watching!

    Kadee did a really good job on these cars. They worked with the RF&P. historical society, and even did a club exclusive release for them. You can see the information and purchase more cars at www.rfandp.org
    Also, RF&P 2335 did look identical to this car until 1986 when it was painted red and assigned as a dedicated HazMat response car in MoW service.

    Since there are real life examples of this preserved, this model would look perfect for a museum type railway, like steamtown, or niles canyon.

    Great review! I have a few Kadee cars and I like them all. I did however get one with a broken sliding door. Contacted Kadee but they said they could only send me a generic white door which disappointed me.

    • @DanielCortopassi
      @DanielCortopassi  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's disappointing. Sometimes boxcars have doors replaced, so with some paint and weathering it might look okay. Thanks for watching!

      @@DanielCortopassi I put both white doors on they gave me and saved the green one as a back up for another NYC boxcar I have. The one with the two white doors is a car I am trying my hand at putting decals on and weathering. Just starting out in the hobby.

    Would that working cushion under frame effect how you’d go about correcting the coupler height to operate the car?

    • @DanielCortopassi
      @DanielCortopassi  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the only one I have like this and I haven't fiddled with it yet so I can't say for sure. With other Kadee cars I've had to file down the bolsters on the frame or the trucks. For some reason they tend to have high couplers. Thanks for watching!
