- Vic Smith's City Edge is a spectacular homage to the grit of 1970s, 80s, 90s, and present-day American cities. The linear scene represents a cityscape that could be New York, Chicago, or any number of other eastern or midwestern cities, drawing particular influence from St. Louis. Operations include a two track mainline that runs on an elevated right of way across the rear of the scene, and an industrial spur that begins at a small yard on the left end of the scene, and runs along city streets to a tunnel on the right end of the railroad. The spur is an out-and-back run, while the mainline operates as a continuous loop, disappearing into another room where it passes through a staging yard (while also crossing an impressive Warren Truss Bridge - not shown).
Construction began in the early 1990s, and changes continue to be made to this day. From realistic weathering, figures, and streetscapes, to the plethora of fully furnished and lit buildings, Vic's layout is a scene-makers delight. The layout has been featured in several railroad publications, has adorned the cover of the Walthers catalog, and even has a Green Frog Productions documentary on it. I had the pleasure of filming the railroad in summer 2024, when this video was shot.

Wow!....I gotta admit High Iron Productions walked into my basement and shot random video on the fly!...and produced this AMAZING video of the City Edge! Great job by High Iron! and I Thank you for the Fantastic job!...and many, many thanks to ALL the people to take the time to comment on my layout!!...time to turn on the trains!!!🍻
It was a fantastic experience seeing your layout in person - thanks so much for the opportunity!
Yes! Thank you Matt, see you next time...🍺
The attention to detail is beyond amazing...the drunk guy being helped out of the bar by his friend is a perfect example!
😁...yes people visiting the layout always seem to enjoy that scene...🍻
This is such a fantastic display .
Just, WOW!!!🔥🔥🔥🩷
🍺
I’ve always loved how dynamic and alive his city layout is. It’s never bland and feels like a snap shot of a real city semi frozen in time.
Its not bland compared to the many foods Gordon Ramsay has had on Kitchen Nightmares
Thank you and the entertainment side of MMR is what I'm after...🍺
The vehicles and scenery bring me back to my youth in the mid 70s. Unreal attention to detail.
Great modeling. Great job filming it. The flashing LEDs. the ambient sounds, the distant sirens, really made it all come together. 👍👍👍
This is impressive. The attention to detail is incredible. Thx for showing us this layout.
Stunning... just stunning. Nighttime lighting is terrific.
Just amazing, very impressive, hope my layout scratches the surface of this incredible detail
Thank you
Nine seconds in and there is Larry The Cable Guy standing next to the fire plug on the corner!! Beautiful
SUPERB!!!!!!!! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!! IF HO TRAIN LAYOUTS WERE THE KEY TO GETTTING INTO HEAVEN GOD WOULD DEFINITELY SAY " WELL DONE MY GOOD AND FAITHFUL CONDUCTOR!!!!" A...MA....ZING!!!!!!
I've always liked this layout, Vic Smith is a genius
It's St. Louis inspired, as the elevated bridge has a lot of elements taken from the McCarther bridge (aka "Free Bridge"). There's also the KSHE radio station billboard, which is an actual rock radio station in StL. (94.7 FM) and has been on the air since the late 60's.
I also noticed the St. Louis elements and the KSHE sign. You mean the MacArthur Bridge. I would also put the early date back to the 1970's with the red and yellow Rock Island SD40-2 and caboose.
Truly amazing the art, construction sound and filmwork, thank you
An amazing layout. This is the kind of layout that you can keep adding details to for many years to come.
Amazing detail on this layout.
Mind blowing, as real as it gets 👍🏻
Can’t get any closer to the real thing. Inner city live action at is best WOW 👍
AMAZING. I WANTED TO SAY, THAT THIS WAS SO AMAZING, I WAS CAPTIVATED BY IT ALL AND LIKE A BOOK READ, I WAS DRAWN INTO THE CITY AS IF IT WERE REAL. THE VIDEO CAPTURES WERE ACE. THE OVER HEAD WIRES WAS ALL SO REAL, WITH THE SOUNDS OF THE CITY IT DRAWS YOU IN AS IF YOU ARE THERE
Incredible
My city fix for shure
Very well detailed, among other things!
Extremely stunning details!
Neat and clean. You had me going there, I was looking all through the details of the production for what type of sound this was. Yes, it does sound realistic. Great job of editing and blending. I think I'm going to play in the background when I'm running. Great layout, worth video showing it.
One thing about the Frisco. When they had an M-u'd lashup, they had the beacons on every unit flashing. Everybody else, only had the beacon on the point unit flashing. Dunno why, but that's the way it was.
Soooo much detail. excellent job!
Great video. It's always fantastic to see Vic's layout. Thanks for sharing your video.
Outstanding!!
Amazing model layout ❤
Interesting railroad, nicely photographed and sound edited.
Nice Layout!
Cool video! Thanks for the ride!!
This has always been the best overall layout I have ever seen in terms of detail. Can anyone give other examples of really detailed layouts? Thanks!
Love the kroger trailers. They used to dominate St Louis. 80's era is my favorite.
Great Stuff!! A LOT of hours go into something like this!
That's a nice job,EXCELLENT 😊!!!!!!!!!!
Wow!!!!!
Awesome layout, and very impressive video..
St. Louis early 90’s
By how did you make all that lighting? It's amazing! The cop cars flashing lights, just awesome !!!!
Incredible video.
Awesome 👍
Superb!!!!
I was waiting for those emergency vehicles to pull out of the station. Hint, hint.
Not bad, not bad at all!
This I love and where did you get all the figures ? 😊 regards Fred 👌😎☕️
Wowwww!
WHAT CITY IS THIS, I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A MEAL AT THAT DINER
I have seen a ton of videos of this layout and the detail is off the hook,, I model in g scale and would luv to some of this detail,i make all my own buildings so not to far off.
Was that Larry the Cable Guy I saw in the first beginning shots with the famous trademark red placid t-shirt sleeveless shirt he always wheres? lol
This is more like it; everything weathered and black people amongst the figures, 'Vic's Place' and sirens. I find the UK countryside layouts dull, and I'm English.
