Is it just me, or does anyone else prefer surfing backside? I have been surfing for 30 years, but I have preferred going backside as long as I can remember. It seems like I think less and flow with the wave’s energy better. I also feel like I get more power out of my turns going backside. This is especially so when coming off the bottom to smash the lip and then actually smashing the lip. It just seems like I can get more radical backside and that I think way to much going frontside. I am much more likely to dig a rail going from side, and I have no idea why. I do love you videos and how you break everything down. Often you break movements down and I really think about it, I realize how technical even basic moves are. I have been doing it for so long that I don’t even think about what I am doing I just do it. I love the fresh perspective you videos give. Keep them coming!
When coming off the bottom in turns/snaps etc: I would add to dip your lead shoulder below the back. Also, put your back foot as far back as it will go on the tail pad. The dipped leading shoulder and back foot will ensure you tilt the board and drive around and up the face on rail initially. This is control and projection. If you do a flat shoulder turn(level) it will result in more fin pivot and turning up into the face flat(no rail engaged). This is a little outa control. My checkpoint is to square or open up shoulders with lead shoulder dipped, THEN look up and do as described. This puts all your pressure on your back foot while also keeping rail engaged. I surfed the flat shoulder rotation for years and ended up always hurting my back. The correction came with footage and was a game-changer for me. Try it.
Being in Michigan we get a lot of south southwest ”swell” so I surf backside a lot, I’m probably the only person that has a proper Great Lakes “short” board it’s more of a mid length but it’s as small as you can get surfing smushy freshwater

Best way to learn to surf backside is to hold a pumpkin out in front of you after you pop up and get going. Helps offset the center of gravity.
