Such a good video. It’s so refreshing to see people stoked and shredding but not at an advanced / pro level. I have been stuck on this part for ages, always just waiting for “flow” to bring me that information because I just couldn’t compute it until now. Thanks for not gatekeeping this information and actually thinking about it
Kale that is the best learning video ever not that I have surfed for a long time now but you break it down into the little pieces of each stage of a process to do great bottom and top turns. I used to try to watch people surfing in slow motion to try and understand how they did such incredible turns and now you put the science behind it well done. Thanks Dave
Kale how’s your day work at the Urban Wave pool in Melbourne ? Get your self there and it’s one day with you and your team once you pay the money and book a day? How often do you do these ?
Yewwww - thanks so much for all the effort you put into your videos, Kale. Your online content has been the cornerstone of my surf progression these last 3 years, here in Cornwall, UK... looking forward to working with you face to face at the Wave next month!
This premise is very important for me right now. I very rarely get a proper bottom turn to attack the lip frontside without getting hung up at the top.
Hey Kale! Have you thought about organizing a coaching retreat in Munich at the new wave pool? It would be amazing to see something like that for us German surfers! 😄
@@KalesBroccoli Maybe that's because they just opened fairly recently? I second that however, the place looks sick and the demand is definitively there.
Please come to Munich! I’d book your retreat immediately. Do you have something like a newsletter that I can sign up to in order to get notified of a possible event in Munich?
Watch any rippers on the gold coast. I never seen surfing like that before. They go way out onto the flat and jam the most insane bottom turn and head back at the face straight at it. And smash the lip then head back way back out onto the flats and repeat again.
People underestimate the importance of coaching. Sure it can be expensive, but as one of the guys in this video pointed out, he has more progress in the coached hour than he did in 19 years on the waves. I am looking forward to Perth Surf Park opening.
We only had Jerry L or Larry B to learn from in the 70-80s. 😊 Down to the movie theatre. stand in line. Hoots and hollers. Watch and learn. Love your content. ❤
great info, but you could also take the high line it can look good and functional for speed or setting up for a good section, so when should you choose high line or go for a deep nice bottom turn ?
Would be so nice to see more backside surfing in your videos!! Please please please Kale include some in your next videos 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 Signed: a regular surfing everyday a left :) Thanks for your work
Noted ! We tend to stick with one direction per video and make sure we cover both inside The Surfers Roadmap - this separates our free content from our premium content 🙏🏽
exactly, they get to use a short board the goes where their mind tells it instead of their usual log that won't turn no matter what. But at least with that log they can say they surfed a named surf spot when they go to the bar.
hey Kale, i'm looking for intermediate bottom turn advice for when speed on the drop starts to change the balance of the bottom turn.. there have been some days where i've lost the bottom turn by losing the "oneness" with my board by initiating the turn quicker than the board allows at speed i'm also trying to get more confidence riding the whitewash line more to beat a section and then more aggressively bottom turning into the action of the wave and harness the moments that feel like the speed is less controllable.. don't know if you have a video for that
You should do a Stop at the MUC O2 Surftown all new Wavepool. Would be soooo nice to have caching session there with you. There are a lot of friends who would join. Cheers Ulf
K-Broc, the trailing hand that starts out up front and then swoops down when approaching the bottom of the wave face….this would be the opposite hand when going backside? Thanks for the content
Hey kale really enjoying your videos. Can I ask how these manoeuvres translate to mid length boards where you open the turns more for smoother manoeuvres compared to a short board ? Cheers
@@KalesBroccoli nice one thanks for replying. I’ve invested in a takayama Devon Howard special having been inspired by his videos and his surf style. Maybe you could include a tutorial for different types of boards and how to adapt to them ? Just a thought !
Surf skate interesting approach. My problem is I first learned to surf going front side both ways then forced a goofy backside but still skate/snowboard regular. I’ve been surfing since I was 8 but still pretty much suck, not completely but as a whole, lol any thoughts coach ?
12:3713:10 No disrespect to anyone but how can you manage not to get anywhere near a decent top turn after 20 YEARS of surfing?! I'm a kook by all means but damn...
Awesome video. Quick question: I often bog rail on my backside bottom turns and cutbacks on my forehand. I went through your surfer's roadmap courses, but couldn't seem to find an answer as to why this could be. I'm guessing it's because I'm putting too much weight on my front foot when turning. If so, approximately what % of weight should be over the back of the board when turning?
So you’re in the same position in both those techniques - leaning back on the heels. You should focus on sitting in a chair, feeling tension behind and around the knees, to achieve stability. Most people who experience this are standing too tall
Just think about the amount of satisfaction you have coming your way if you stick at it, where as someone who’s surfed as a kid doesn’t get quite the excitement.
Don’t think to hard about it you just do it. Flow with whatever the wave is giving you. If you’re thinking about all this nonsense you aren’t paying attention to whatever the wave is doing.
I really enjoy people dedicating their time to something and then sharing their knowledge! Thank you.
Thank you 🙏🏽

Awesome to see sport science being used in some of your teaching, most systems for teaching never get down into that nitty gritty!!
Love it ❤

Love how Kale breaks it down. Raw Biomechanics put into place.

Thanks for sharing! Will try to implement this on my surf trip to El Salvador next week!

This is what so many/ probably 90-95% of surfers out there need to know.
👌🏽
The wave dictates the lines. The surfer makes the decisions. Some make better decisions and take better lines
And with hindsight you can always pick apart someone’s decision making 👌🏽
Grew up surfing, would never have learned this but only would think every surfer would have their own style..

Highline to create the speed (when appropriate) low line to use it

Hey kale really enjoying your videos. Can I ask how these manoeuvres translate to mid length boards where you open the turns more for smoother manoeuvres compared to a short board ? Cheers
Same principles apply. But, a longer slower expression of power may be necessary depending on board choice - a good mid length should be manoeuvrable
