I just calculated the odds of hitting at least one of the five cards in your starting hand with a possible Mulligan to one: In 83.54% of the games you start out with at least one of the cards in your hand, so your 75% winrate with one opponent having interaction checks out. Also, if you don't hit any of the cards and Mulligan to one, you have a chance of about 50% to hit one in the next 12 cards.
I've faced this deck eight times today and won every time. Once you know what they're doing you just have to be willing to mulligan a few times yourself to find a single early interactive spell.
I changed up the lands, added a few more cascade cards and built/bought this deck within an hour of this video. So goofy and fun. Great way to relax after complex commander games. Thanks Seth for the inspiration.
Fortunately, this deck probably can't be super unhealthy for the format - you basically just need to mulligan for early game interaction the instant you see a Laelia and you should be fine 90% of the time
On mulligan to specific card decks, i made an old stickfingers deck that wanted any reanimation spell. Old stickfingers can always get cultivator colossus, and you can just put a small arbitrary number of fun and probably mana heavy and recursive powerfull cards. The nice thing is that it doesn't need the ginourmous cultivator colossus it produces to survive, since it just ramps 30 lands and redraws your hand. If it's not exiled you can prbably do it again too. It was pretty fun, and when i made it the cheapest reanimate spell in brawl was 5 mana
Putting a lot of utility lands in could make it more consistent. Arch of Orazca, Blast Zone, Branch of Vitu-Ghazi, Crawling Barrens, Den of the Bugbear, Dwarven Mine, Faceless Haven (with Snow Basics), Gate to Tumbledown, Geier Reach Sanitarium, Hidden Volcano, Labyrinth of Skophos, Mishra's Foundry, Mobilized District, Mutavault and Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance all slot in without disrupting the discover combo but give extra card draw, attackers, ways to find cards to cast, etc
I used to play a game called Eternal Card Game (designed by LSV and Patrick Chapin) and the mulligan for that system guaranteed between 2 and 5 lands and spells in each hand. There was a deck at one point that would include the minimum number of spells allowed which would force the shuffler to give you at least 2 really good cards every game. And there was a card that was functionally "Leyline of Lava Axe". So you would just hope to dome them for half of their life in the first turn then finish it off with a red aggro plan. It was never a very competitive deck, but it reminds me a lot of this.
I think something else thats helping this deck right now is people not understanding the interaction between it and cascade when they just read the card, ecause it says 1 or more on the card they think a cascade spell is only 1 counter bgecause you exile multiple cards at the same time, not realising that every card is a seperate trigger jsut because cascade requires you to check after every card is exiled. some of those opponents probably saw you only had 1 or 2 cards in hand and thought weell no matter what they cast it cant get more than a couple of counters so it will be fine to not leave up removal, you only have to see this interaction once to learn
I just built this, I feel awful. As someone who just started playing Arena, this feels like an excellent way to just make sure you're hitting your daily's without investing too many wildcards, but damn it feels bad to steamroll people who are just trying to actually play Magic.
Thanks, I really didn't need people trying to play this without knowing when they are cooked... I've seen a few Laelia recently, and the most recent one mulligan to 1, didn't seem to grasp Overwhelming Splendor was enough to neuter the entire deck, and even wanted to play a few turns with Ethereal Absolution in play as well.
It's crazy I think I mentioned playing the deck a month ago, something about Laelia is hilarious with Discover. I'm glad its gonna spread like wildfire now lmao. Great games!
I've been playing this deck as I've been getting back into arena. Even though it is an all or none style deck, I'm currently 8-3 with it. It is hilarious. The mirror match comes down to who goes first and has a discover spell in hand. I'm grinding packs with this deck, it is great
This deck can also play spells with a mana value of 5 and up. The build I put together after getting memed on about a week ago has a ton of cyclers and cards like Hearth Elemental, Fast//Furious, etc. that technically have a huge MV but can be cast for cheaper that all dig for discover/cascade hits. Hidden Volcano is also a huge one in the manabase!
Built it in paper was able to add several cascade cards which helps with the mulligan simulator. It functions but may be praying for a top deck after some removal. My favorite add is “Let the galaxy burn” from warhammer precon. It really describes playing the deck. You should do it for commander clash
I've been experimenting with a laelia domain control deck for a while and it's quite fun and successful. I run a lot of 4-6 mana board sweeps, some cards to ramp up my lands, some tutors, some deck/hand exile cards, plenty of discover, some plainswalkers, and about 125 lands. Deck is maxed out for arena at 250 cards.
I just tried this deck, my first opponent cast Gyruda turn 3 and milled my etali's favor. I stuck with it and managed to win by discovering into daring discovery and stopping his blocks.
Commander does have a lot more cascade/discover cards; but on the flip side, you have three opponents, so the chance of someone having removal is higher, and you can only kill one of them per turn, so even after possibly surprise-killing the first one, Laelia needs to survive a collective three full turns from your opponents.
@@FoxoqNah; all the extra cards exiled by Cascade or Discover get put back on the bottom of the library; they don't stay in exile. It would be a VERY different mechanic in practice if they did.
I know it’s obvious from this side of things, but if your opponent is mulliganing down to 2 or 3 cards shouldn’t that just raise every red flags imaginable?
I Been Encountering A Few Laelia Decks And I Have Started To Make Sure I Have Some Type Of Removal/Counter/Can't Attack Card In My Hand When I Go Against Them. Or Disenchant And 1 Blocker.
While the odds won't be perfect - its roughly a 31% chance you'd start with at least 1 of the 5 cards in your starting hand before you muligan. Math on a winnable hand gets weirder once you get past the starting hand due to branching conditions, so for simplicity i'll just be sticking to the opening ones. Muligan math also gets weird due to the same basis behind drawing getting weird once you get below 6, so for that same reason i'll just be sticking to the keep 7 and keep 6 for this. With the mull to 6, the odds of seeing at least 1 of the 5 shoot up to 51%
Ended up playing against this deck today! And can attest to the fact that it loses to any and all interaction. Was playing a self mill deck, cut down won me the game.
Just had a fun match with this deck against a Windgrace deck on the draw. Turn one they played Riveteer's Outlook Turn two they played Elvish Reclaimer. Turn three they went "Good Game" and played Stone Rain. Turn four they played Rubble Reading. Turn five they played Windgrace. Turn five I played Laelia. Turn six played Throes of Chaos and they conscede after Etali's Favor hit the board. I love that someone who played land destruction and got off to a fairly reasonable start had to just give up. Of course, right after that match I run into someone who hit me with Cyclonic Rift after a turn 4 Etali's Favor, which the deck can't recover from (no way to trample through).
I saw this deck for the first time earlier tonight and I had looked away when they comboed out and couldn't for the life of me reverse engineer how she had gotten so huge until a couple minutes of looking the board over after losing lol. Immediately went and bought packs until I got a rare wild card so I could make this for myself
My 90+ land deck is Esika, God of the Tree. Except its really a planar bridge deck. The only card in the deck bridge can find is Cultivator Colossus. The remaining non-land slots are Banefire and ways to protect the Colossus and ourselves until we win.
So maybe I missed something but I thought if a card read "one or more" for a trigger it would only trigger once. What's allowing it to bypass that rule?
Can someone explain the interaction here? Why isn't the relevant text on Laelia "one or more cards are put into exile"? Surely there should only be one +1/+1 counter, as there's only a single instance of cards being put into exile, rather than 90 distinct instances?
The trick is basically how discover and cascade work. Technically they exile cards one by one until they hit something you can cast, so each card you reveal will trigger Laelia to put a 1/+1 counter on it.
Not sure how the BO1 shuffler works these days, but if you play 10 spells then hands are more likely to contain a spell than not. If the shuffler still draws two hands and keeps the one closest to the typical land count for the deck, then this should change the probability of having a discover spell in the opener from 9.7% to about 45%.
So, it seems like the effect isn't quite as strong as the maths would indicate, but it did really seem to give me more keepable openers. Additionally, Hidden Volcano is a must and you probably want to play Gate to Tumbledown as well.
arena was extremely kind to you. I have a codie deck, and always cast it on turn 2 (with dorks), but EVERY opponent has removal to kill it before I can untap on turn 3.
this reminds me of a commander deck I played again with the commanders the war doctor and Ryan Sinclair. the deck will run only land and when ryan exiles to find the nonland that is not there it will put a time counter on the war doctor allowing to kill a player as soon as it attacks.
You can maybe trick the hand smoother into giving you better hands by adding a few cards with MV > whatever your highest discover value is. Currently your land percentage is so high that given two hands, one with 6 lands and a spell and one with 7 lands, the smoother will choose the 7 land hand because 100% lands is closer to your deck's composition than 85.7% lands. Also, the red discover cave is a no-brainer that the deck should be playing. Also, also, like your last Laelia meme deck, there may be non-meme applications of this interaction. Laelia will be legal in Modern as of MH3 and may be playable in Rhinos decks there if a baseline okay beater of a 3-drop that becomes roughly a 20/20 when you do your thing is good. She may also be interesting in Rhino decks in Historic (Rhinos will not be playable in Timeless unless they add the good cascade cards), though she creates a risk for every Cascade/Discover card in the format with the exception of Bloodbraid Marauder (or Scalesoul Gnome hitting for less than 3 or triggering Pantlaza with a small butt, highish MV dino, most likely a Faceless Agent or deliberately not taking the discover until the eggs come down off a Palani's Hatcher) missing the Rhinos.
I have a 94 land deck in edh that treasure hunts into Jadzi for the backside to put all your lands into play with mazes end, thespian stage dark depths, and is ran by kenrith partnered with zirda so you can just do Kenrith beats if all else fails
So here's what I don't get. Traditionally in magic "if one or more happens" is a clause in a card, we usually say "regardless of how many cards do X, it triggers as one instance" But because these effects exile until their target, its like a bajillion single exiles? Am I understanding this correct?
@@sc0ut399 amd thats what I hate, it feels like an abuse of the rule. If theres a good reason why doing it the latter would create other rules problems I'm all for it, but I haven't seen that argument.

I stuck with it and managed to win by discovering into daring discovery and stopping his blocks.
this is just a better version of the old Ashling meme commander deck lol
Commander does have a lot more cascade/discover cards; but on the flip side, you have three opponents, so the chance of someone having removal is higher, and you can only kill one of them per turn, so even after possibly surprise-killing the first one, Laelia needs to survive a collective three full turns from your opponents.
You would just die on your next draw step.
@@FoxoqNah; all the extra cards exiled by Cascade or Discover get put back on the bottom of the library; they don't stay in exile. It would be a VERY different mechanic in practice if they did.
11:37 you should ask Crim If he remembers. Especially his tenure as the GM of kings
I need to build this IRL just to get a good laugh with the bois
Help me achieve this as efficiently as possible (all and any suggestions are welcome)
Welp, thanks for showing me the deck I will be playing against for the next few weeks
this still catches people off guard btw. extremely funny
With the mull to 6, the odds of seeing at least 1 of the 5 shoot up to 51%
This is a great way to remove two players in commander. One opponent, and you.
Ended up playing against this deck today! And can attest to the fact that it loses to any and all interaction. Was playing a self mill deck, cut down won me the game.
Cut lands to 60 and you got it. You dont need 95 trample. 45 trample is enough
Just had a fun match with this deck against a Windgrace deck on the draw.
Turn one they played Riveteer's Outlook
Turn two they played Elvish Reclaimer.
Immediately went and bought packs until I got a rare wild card so I could make this for myself
would the discover lands work in this? the red one surely goes in...i think?
Yay love the meme decks!
My 90+ land deck is Esika, God of the Tree. Except its really a planar bridge deck. The only card in the deck bridge can find is Cultivator Colossus. The remaining non-land slots are Banefire and ways to protect the Colossus and ourselves until we win.
Both times I've come across this deck I had removal for Laelia before it popped off. Very funny to see them concede once their combo doesn't work.
So maybe I missed something but I thought if a card read "one or more" for a trigger it would only trigger once. What's allowing it to bypass that rule?
Absolutely remember Vlade Divac. What a random (but welcome) callback.
"You May Not Play These Cards" is the new "Look at the cards."
this reminds me of a commander deck I played again with the commanders the war doctor and Ryan Sinclair. the deck will run only land and when ryan exiles to find the nonland that is not there it will put a time counter on the war doctor allowing to kill a player as soon as it attacks.
How can you call this budget? in paper, this deck costs around $1700 in paper. Those APAC Mountains are about $18 a pop.
Today we're teaching Brawl Zoomers about removal.
I have a 94 land deck in edh that treasure hunts into Jadzi for the backside to put all your lands into play with mazes end, thespian stage dark depths, and is ran by kenrith partnered with zirda so you can just do Kenrith beats if all else fails
This was so silly. Thanks for the matches!
So here's what I don't get. Traditionally in magic "if one or more happens" is a clause in a card, we usually say "regardless of how many cards do X, it triggers as one instance"
But because these effects exile until their target, its like a bajillion single exiles? Am I understanding this correct?
No,you have to check everyone of the cards, that means the Laelia triggers per card, not per discover
@@sc0ut399 amd thats what I hate, it feels like an abuse of the rule. If theres a good reason why doing it the latter would create other rules problems I'm all for it, but I haven't seen that argument.
11:10 Seth managing to throw away a game even with the 94 mountains deck.
In commander you could add a bunch of discover cascade, but only have one cmc3 spell and nothing lower to support it. Clunky, but how I would try it
Vlade Divac such an old reference, he was a great basketball player (one of if not the best around 1997) and from my country too. Won a bunch of medals while playing nationally and for the NBA as well.
I played against someone playing this on brawl when I was doing Etrata, Deadly Fugitive shaenanigans.
I won by holding up removal the entire game while etrata hit in for value
Thats crazy, I watch you all the time and was just googling Laelia decks and you just dropped this! good taste
Man I envy these matchups. Whenever I play historic brawl, I get nothing but Ragavan and Rusko.
To make this deck better, how many Mountains could you cut, and what could you add in their place to make Laelia still crazy huge?
You can add bascly any red card with manacost more than 3
Do you think Caldera Breaker would work in this deck?
"better to be lucky than to be good" the deck
Came across this while playing my Yarok deck, killed the combo with Kenrith's transformation, so they tried the beat down plan with a 4/4 deer until i cast mindflayer and stole her, they scooped after
Came for the magic. Stayed for the Vlade Divac talk.
