The music to this game is hypnotic and genius. All 3 parts. It's like you catch yourself thinking every 10 minutes that the same notes have constantly been playing without really noticing it. Fits perfectly with the run of the game
+Brandon Redmon The flute is based off dungeons you've beaten and which one you've visited last. Face east (right) and you'll move up a dungeon (eg from 5 to 6), look west (left) when you blow it and you'll move down (eg 5 to 4). Best time to use it is going from 6 to 7 (warp to 3, and go left, up, up, left, up to level 7) or from 7 to 8 (warp to 2, then go down, right, down, down.
It's the current SDA record, whether it's the WR i couldn't say. Basically when a run is submitted they look for 3 or so verifiers to watch the speed run and determine if it has proper video quality, no cheats used, and if the run would be entertaining. The verifiers are people who have experience with the games and know what to look for when it comes to that kind of thing. Hope that answers your question:)
Still my favorite game of all time. Tirelessly searching the dungeons for secrets as a kid was the most fun. I probably tried bombing every wall and burning every tree in both quests trying to unlock every secret. So much fun.
It's like.... "My Girl has been taken captive, broken the Triforce (of Wisdom) into eight pieces which I must find and piece together and the world as I know (Hyrule) is coming to an end AND the fate of it all is upon MY shoulders.... BUT...Don't worry...I'll have THIS ALL taken care of within a half hour!" LOL!! Awesome stuff!!
1/1/14 was my 30th B-day… For which my sister (who is an amazing cake designer made me a lifelike NES cake.) Her, my almost 9-year-old nephew, and myself were sitting around telling him about old NES games and Zelda came up; I decided to look up this video… all I can say is that I'm simultaneously super-impressed and cursing you… it took you 34 minutes to do what my 7-year-old self did in probably about 3 months… I need to replay this now: and more importantly; I need him to experience the original Zelda so he can know the roots of the games he's playing now… Hahaha: Zelda through generations! (By the way… WELL PLAYED!!!!)
I watched the whole speed run without pausing even once and at the end I was like, wait did I really watch this 35 min video at once ?! :) Amazing game with an amazing gameplay..
Heh. I've never played the Zelda games but it was interesting watching this. Even though I hadn't played the game I've definitely seen its influence. I'm sure I've heard this music before and the game itself heavily inspired others like Isaac. Pretty cool.
To do a speed run, the hearts are necessary. A three heart run is done with a wand and the two rings, both to increase defense and to have an inexhaustible weapon as powerful as the white sword. The time saved by not grabbing the heart containers does not make up for the time used to obtain the wand and the two rings.
For noobs: He does not have a blue ring, he is not cheating and those enemies that flickers are not dealing damage, they only stun his attack for a brief moment. If you name your guy ZELDA as you start your game you will start another game, same world but places are different. Levels are not where they were before. In some levels in the 2nd world there are those no-damage-dealing-enemies which look a bit different. The red (lets call it sun) sun removes your ability to use sword permanently. The blue sun gives it back. So if you want a real challange type ZELDA for your characters name or complete the first run-through, then the sword next to your guy in the selection menu appears and you are in for another adventure. Btw, I have never completed the 2nd run. Its damn hard, so GOOD LUCK!
Yes, quest 2. You can either beat the first quest, which we just saw this guy do, or enter ZELDA as your name. Both will get you to 2nd quest. And I hate those red flickers.
darn it, the player made it look easy, I gave up playing on this when I was 7 I almost smashed my Famicom cause I got f***ing frustrated thinking where to go next, good thing link to the past made me love zelda series all over again.
Yeah, this game was -crazy hard- back in the day before there were guides, walkthroughs, and the internet. I too couldn't find some levels, and I didn't even know you could bomb through walls as a kid (it was my cousin's NES, and he'd long since lost whatever manual this game came with that would have let you know you could.) I remember trying, but I didn't know the bombs had to be in the center of the wall or they wouldn't work.
silverpony1 the bombs don't really need to be in the "center" to find secret passages, i put it in front of the wall on the ground, on the wall, the side of the wall. The blast radius will usually open the passages.
AvEryBadApPLe You must have accidentally skipped over the part where I said it was my cousin's NES, and he'd lost the manual the game came with. No worries. If the map was a seperate piece, well, I never even knew it existed because he also lost all the other paperwork, too. I had just the game cart, and that was it. I'm not sure the 800 line existed that early on; if it did, I was unaware of it - but even if I'd known about it, I would not have been allowed to call it because that would have cost money. (Didn't they charge by the minute for game help?) If they didn't charge, and if it did exist at the time, then it's too bad I didn't know about it, haha. I don't think I even became aware of the magazine's existence until a couple years later, probably in around 1990. None of these things mean I didn't play that game, or the few others we had, over and over and over and over and -over-, trying to get past the parts I was stuck at. It meant it was the middle/late 80s in a small town, and I was the only girl playing video games I knew, which meant I had nobody to swap tips with.
silverpony1 no need to explain yourself to that person. I owned legend of Zelda when I was 5 years old so how the hell was I supposed to know I could call an 800 number to be walked through a damn game...
not at all. I'm sure every Zelda fan has their favorite game in the series;) Im torn between OoT and MM, but I lean more towards Ocarina for sheer good memories and the length of the quest in that game is just epic.
Krynn9000, there is a speed run that I saw once, within the last year, where the gamer simply used--I believe--the white sword. I don't remember what keywords to input to find it. His speed run was a little faster than this one. I can't remember its time, but I think it was 25 minutes and some change. My memory of that playthrough is a bit fuzzy, but I also think he defeated Ganon a bit differently than SDA did: I think he relied more on arrows. Cheers, K.L.
NES Zelda games should have started the story of Zelda off with Gandorf (the human sorcerer) as the main/final boss in Legend of Zelda 1. And after his death in the 1st game Gandorf should have appeared as his dead Demon self in his 2nd form known as " Gannon" on The Adventure of Link 2 (the 2nd NES game).
There's a lot of influence from Zelda in Isaac. On top of the general layout of the game there's a bunch of item references like bombs, the ladder, blue candle, the boomerang, etc. There was a challenge run in Rebirth or maybe Afterbirth that basically turned Isaac into Link with a sword, shield, and boomerang. Even the lives system is pretty similar with the HP upgrades and enemies dealing a range of damage from half a heart to 2 hearts (not really sure if that was unique to LoZ at the time of its release though). Isaac is like a more morbid Zelda. lol
haha, I dont think so. This was one of the first NES games I played, and I love this Zelda and Links adventure most. Not argueing about the quality of the games that came later though :D. But we all have our favorites. For some it's link to the Past, for me it will always be the one that started it all: The Legend :D
I remember the first time I beat Zelda. Lol. Good times, I got this game for Christmas on year. I remember I hated the commercials some hyper active guy saying all the creatures in the game.
This player's got skills. I watched him last night beat this with only 5 heart retainers, and the White Sword. My compliments to an excellent run. To all the posters. Please stop bickering, and just enjoy the video. I can beat this game. Just not as fast, or as good.
its normal when u have no other items you can switch to! for example you have the bombs an the bow, but when u dont have arrows for the bow u cant use him so the game wont let you even chose the bow! get more items you can use and you will see you can swap them
I would also like Nintendo to bring this game back with the original graphics but add something to where you could save your progress so that way if you died you could keep going instead of having to start all over.
If it was sped up then the music and sound effects would be sped up too, meaning the sound quality and/or pitch would change which is clearly not the case.
If you enter it the second time, the door on the north is unlocked. Search for the following string on Google Search: "I know the cause of the Level 1 door unlocking itself!"
I think I know the secret. First calm down, second train for it, third don't waste your time with those enemies. PS : Did you see how freakin' awesome that was!
You need a certain amount of hearts for the sword upgrades... So there was a point to getting them. Besides, they don't waste as much time on a speedrun as they do in a modern Zelda game... With all the damn text.
back in the days i could probably beat this game easily within 45 mins or so and i did it 100% getting everything and its so funny that you went to lvl 3 and 4 first cuz that is what i did... I did it mostly to show that i could do a harder lvl without powerup stuff and to make some sort of challenge for myself. It has been awhile since then so im very rusty but still good times trying to beat it very quickly when i was little, BEFORE the mainsteam internet came around too thus is why the 2nd quest was so hard in the beginning..... nintendo power call over the phone on some of the 2nd quest location of stuff :)
Them foes don't inflict health damage. They disable the sword attack for a brief period so you can get screwed in the butt by those squishy pancake beasts that can straight up steal your big shield. I usually beat the nintendo with a stick when that occurs.
Pretty good overall. Why attack the vires around the 5:00 mark? If you split them without killing them in one hit they can't drop items, so there really was no point.
The music to this game is hypnotic and genius. All 3 parts. It's like you catch yourself thinking every 10 minutes that the same notes have constantly been playing without really noticing it. Fits perfectly with the run of the game
I spent the entire summer of 1989 and all of 1990 doing nothing but playing this game. I had a blast!!!!
+Brandon Redmon

Wow! That was incredibly well played.
Starts slow hand clap. 35 minutes! damn!
Mad skillz, dude. Watched every minute, and loved every second.
It's the current SDA record, whether it's the WR i couldn't say. LOL!! Awesome stuff!!
This game has the shortest credits ever, and I know it was made in a year with an extremely small staff that's why they are short

This game is quite hard this guy is such a pro he makes it look easy. Now to see this in the second quest, oh god.
Heh. I've never played the Zelda games but it was interesting watching this. Even though I hadn't played the game I've definitely seen its influence. I'm sure I've heard this music before and the game itself heavily inspired others like Isaac. Pretty cool.

Very cool speedrun
It's a console run. Speed runs you see from SDA don't contain any Tool-assistance.
For noobs: He does not have a blue ring, he is not cheating and those enemies that flickers are not dealing damage, they only stun his attack for a brief moment. When they say Binding of Isaac was inspired by this, they weren't kidding
I just started playing OoT a couple weeks ago. Still as fun as it was when I was a kid!
Very well done. I visited because I saw your contribution to Game Trailers. Very interesting stuff.
Just found speed demos archive. I love that they verify the no cheating. Thumbs up, guys.

Someone made this in 1985 - that is amazing!
@Klack Koaster nope, 1985. Game was published in 1986...it was not done in a day. Maybe even 1984.
@Klack Koaster made? Developement begun in 1984, and it was published in february 1986.

i remember playing this game with my elder brother in the late 80's, i still can't beat it even today ~__~
Nice.....I had this game for years and could never find the silver arrow to beat the game. It's nice to see how it ended.......20 years later.
You got my Gamer Respect :D
hi darkwing duck
great speedrun
Wish I could predict where the yellow wizrobes are going to teleport to. If I could, I wouldn't need the blue ring.
Ahhh, old school 😎
Wow, so thats what "binding of isaac" was inspired by! As russian proverb says: everything new is well forgotten old
NES Zelda games should have started the story of Zelda off with Gandorf (the human sorcerer) as the main/final boss in Legend of Zelda 1. And after his death in the 1st game Gandorf should have appeared as his dead Demon self in his 2nd form known as " Gannon" on The Adventure of Link 2 (the 2nd NES game).
26:00 - that's exactly how I beat Gohma my first time playing the game. =P Wow, that's some impressive battling against those Wizzrobes.
i love this game
JUST realised Binding of Isaac stage layout based on Zelda
Ha! Thought the same thing recently!
There's a lot of influence from Zelda in Isaac. Isaac is like a more morbid Zelda. lol
If I remember right, the sparks prevented Link from using his sword for a bit after they hit him, but didn't drain any hearts.
GG WP! Gonna go try this.
The locked door in the first room opens by itself if you do that. That way you can have an extra key to use later.
You know I never knew you could double bomb those dodongos. And here I was doing it the hard way >_
haha, I dont think so. This was one of the first NES games I played, and I love this Zelda and Links adventure most. Not argueing about the quality of the games that came later though :D. But we all have our favorites. For some it's link to the Past, for me it will always be the one that started it all: The Legend :D
I might be early saying this but happy 30th anniversary Legend Of Zelda
thanks man!
by 28:40 he had all the pieces.
by that time, I cant get ONE!
Best Zelda game ever
neat trick to get that door unlocked at 6:52!
i just LOVE the game song !!
I remember the first time I beat Zelda. Lol. Good times, I got this game for Christmas on year. I remember I hated the commercials some hyper active guy saying all the creatures in the game.
I think it was Adam Ant. "Zeeeeeeeeeldaaaaaa". "Which way to go?"
Who cares pops!
This player's got skills. I watched him last night beat this with only 5 heart retainers, and the White Sword.
My compliments to an excellent run.
To all the posters. Please stop bickering, and just enjoy the video.

The flute does the same sound in Mario 3.
How anyone could beat this without a guide of some kind is beyond me.
Clap. Clap. Clap. Very nice.
I've 100% this game 6 times and there is no way in hell I could even come close to this speed run
Really enjoy the run..new sub gained!
amazing....!!! you're the best
I wish that someone would make a movie based on the original game.
I would also like Nintendo to bring this game back with the original graphics but add something to where you could save your progress so that way if you died you could keep going instead of having to start all over.
+jackrobinson82 get it for the 3ds virtual console or wii u it has save state and its not illegal
WHAT???? The cart saves games and you can continue when you die. ?!??!!??!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
jackrobinson82 the original game had saving tard
Joseph Marchyok Must’ve been a faulty battery.
Awesome speed run. Do you HAVE to get the magical sword, at around the 23:00 mark? I can't remember for sure, but like you need it to kill Ganon?
If it was sped up then the music and sound effects would be sped up too, meaning the sound quality and/or pitch would change which is clearly not the case.
If you enter it the second time, the door on the north is unlocked. Search for the following string on Google Search:
"I know the cause of the Level 1 door unlocking itself!"
Wtf.... are you a wizrobe?? That was fucking incredible
maestro
I think I know the secret. First calm down, second train for it, third don't waste your time with those enemies.
PS : Did you see how freakin' awesome that was!
Yeah I will have to agree. There's a hit taken around 4:31 and hearts do not reflect it.
You need a certain amount of hearts for the sword upgrades... So there was a point to getting them. Besides, they don't waste as much time on a speedrun as they do in a modern Zelda game... With all the damn text.
Watched my brother play this for 3 months and still didn't even beat it

Is there a particular reason he entered/left/re-entered level 1? Gr8 run!
This guy shows you just how many things in this game were more of a red herring.......
I have to know- did you do this from memory, or do you have mate giving directions? VERY impressive either way. Cheers!
There's a minor glitch where entering, leaving, and immediately reentering level 1 makes the first key door unlocked.
Notice there was a locked door. Notice that when he walked back in, it wasn't there anymore.
Old trick in this game. It only works for that door though
Leaving heart container behind = gangsta
YESSSSSSS OoT , best game, EVER
Good video
You can't push the stone until all the enemies in the room are killed.
Why didn't he grab a heart piece in dungeon 8?
waste like 8 seconds
The PAL version is slightly slower especialy when playing the NTSC version on PAL NES, might be what he was confused about.
The binding of Isaac, se inspiró en este Zelda, de forma intencional, dicho por el desarrollador edmund mcmillen
Your playing quest 2 here if i remeber right as quest one you could just find the bommerang and was it the blue candia.
I can remember getting owned in level 6 repeatedly!! LOL
I actually feel like there's a lot of room for improvement on this run, at least 30 seconds, if not a full minute,
If you think that the hit taken at 4:31 should be reflected in the hearts, then you never played this game (my english sucks, sorry )
I have beat this game multiple times in 32-35 minutes. I should post a play :)
You should.
don’t get cocky
Them foes don't inflict health damage. They disable the sword attack for a brief period so you can get screwed in the butt by those squishy pancake beasts that can straight up steal your big shield. I usually beat the nintendo with a stick when that occurs.
Only took me 21 years to beat this game
it's easy to tell once you have a map. as far as the over world, who knows? nintendo power i guess.
Yeah !!!
Pretty good overall. Why attack the vires around the 5:00 mark? If you split them without killing them in one hit they can't drop items, so there really was no point.
at 6:45 why the enter-reenter the dungeon #1? Is there a particular reason that happened or was it a "derrrrp" moment?
Oh, not the first dungeon he went in, but the first proper dungeon... I'm okay...
It causes a glitch where a locked door in the first room becomes unlocked.
Does that Blue Octo always give the bombs or was it save stated until it did?
Disregard that message; @thestormofwar just explained it in the comments. Well this is awkward.
El mejor juego del mundo. Al menos el mejor en cuestión a pionero, no sé si se me entiende, jeje...
I think it is because you can go faster to 3-4-1 than to 1-2-3-4^^
The top door unlocks
Ah, gotcha, thanks
