    ----------------------------------------------------
    For those who stumble across these videos, a speed run is a video of a person or persons, completing a game as fast as possible using any means possible. This can include glitches, abusing in-game mechanics and skipping items or even playing events out of sequence.
    Released in December 1988, The Adventure of Link follows Link on a side-scrolling quest through Hyrule to place six crystals back in their palaces, and eventually wake the sleeping princess Zelda. Highly criticized as being too different from the first Zelda, The Adventure of Link introduced some elements that would be seen in many later Zelda games such as towns and magic, but other things never seen again such as experience points and 1 ups.Source: SDA game page. \
    Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, released as The Legend of Zelda 2: Link no Bōken (THE LEGEND OF ZELDA 2 リンクの冒険?) in Japan, is an action role-playing video game with platforming elements. The second installment in The Legend of Zelda series, it was developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game was originally released in Japan on the Family Computer Disk System less than a year after the release of the original The Legend of Zelda. Nintendo released Zelda II in Japan on January 14, 1987, seven months before the United States saw the release of the first Zelda title. Nintendo released Zelda II in North America in 1988, almost two years after its initial release in Japan, converting the game from its initial Disk System format to the NES cartridge.
    The Adventure of Link is a direct sequel to the original The Legend of Zelda, again involving the protagonist, Link, on a quest to save Princess Zelda, who has fallen under a sleeping spell. The Adventure of Link's emphasis on side-scrolling and role-playing-style elements, however, was a significant departure from its predecessor. The game was highly successful at the time and introduced elements that would become commonplace in future Zelda games, although the role-playing elements such as experience points were never used again. It was followed in 1992 by The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for the Super NES. The game is also looked upon as one of the most difficult games in the Zelda series. Source: Wikipedia.org

    Great video! The sword thrusting and stabbing didn't bother me one bit. Funny because when I play this game or any other game I'm jumping and either punching or stabbing into nothing. It's probably my OCD kicking in while playing video games. Other than that, this video is a pretty good walkthrough. I totally dug it. Great channel. Love it. Thanks : )

    It's probably the PC ROM version of link- which is easily code friendly for scripts worse then the game genie 26 years ago. Programmed to run a pattern that lands a significant high probability of "dodging" the opposing code. Grats non the less. Love the show.

    • @possumverde
      @possumverde 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it was done via ROM, it would be labeled as a TAS (tool assisted speedrun.) Much of how this game is programed is now known and with that knowledge things like avoiding random battles, knowing when certain drops will come etc.can be manipulated (somewhat consistently) by the runner without the need for any outside assistance / ROM hack etc.

    life level 6, how is this 100%?

    • @possumverde
      @possumverde 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Ben Carroll I think all that is required for the "official" 100% no glitch run is all items, keys, spells, attacks, and heart / magic containers. I'm guessing that's due to the fact that the best route for getting all of that finds you at the end without maxed stats. Adding that as a requirement would simply mean adding some boring grinding just for that one thing while everything else can be accomplished along the way with no need to grind. I'm just starting to get in to speed running but from what I've seen, when it comes to 100% runs in general they tend to leave off requirements that are simply a matter of grinding. The 100% run for Final Fantasy, for example, doesn't require maxing out the levels of the characters...

  • @jameskilpatrick8092
    @jameskilpatrick8092 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    no no no, this is tool assisted

    • @possumverde
      @possumverde 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +James Kilpatrick I doubt that...There were some random encounters and small time losses here that current runners now consistently avoid and tool assisted runs always avoid. The code for this game has been so dissected and so many people run the game and share what they know that they pretty much have it down to a science. (to the point that, using only the controller, they can consistently manipulate the random encounters and drop patterns so well that they actually plan the route around them.) The current unassisted record is a couple of minutes faster than this and the TAS is well under an hour...

    this has to be the gayest run through ive seen for zelda 2. Not only is the guy not very good, he's cheating.

    • @kenalebla
      @kenalebla 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +toadsonytwo This looks pretty legit. I'm playing through on ROM now. Just a nostalgia run, not for speed. That being said, the runner never breaks game mechanics. I'm sure he's played through the game on ROMS hundreds of times. But this looks legit. Also, SDA is a recognized authority on this sort of "sport." It's not just some guy in his basement sayin', "Hey look what I did." There are gamers there watching the run and the equipment being used. I've also heard this guy mentioned in runs with commentary.

    • @toadsonytwo
      @toadsonytwo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Alexander Blanton You didnt watch the whole video if you think he doesn't break mechanics. In the last palace he jumps over the wall, which you cant do, to take a short cut. He also uses a hack to level up, its at 47:40. Watch as his total xp goes from 1200 to 8000. Then at 48:34, it goes back down to 800 xp. The Wall jump is at 114:00. I tried the same jump and you cannot jump ontop of the wall.

    • @kenalebla
      @kenalebla 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the citations. I'll check it out.

    • @kenalebla
      @kenalebla 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +toadsonytwo Okay, this I can say for certain. That is no hack. It's the level up mechanic. Zelda 2 is funky with level ups and for a better explanation, you could probably look anywhere but here:
      8 is the max you can go (for attack, health, or magic). However, you can pass on a level up. You still keep the experience, but it builds to the next skill - the one with the next highest cost. So, if you keep building up a single skill, attack (as most speed runners do from what I've seen), that one skill will cost way more than the others (and will max out at 8000). Anytime you place a crystal on the statue your experience builds to the maximum is of what skill you're working on (regardless of the cost). So, the runner kept skipped life and magic a bunch (which, from what I've observed is nothing new in a speed run of this game). [notice he beats the boss and skips the magic level up at 1200. Why? If he did, his experience would reset. He would only get 800 for the statue (well, 589). Instead he keeps it running (so the skill level up marker [if you will] switched to attack power, which is already at maximum level, netting him 8000 total experience points). So he has 1411/8000 instead of 211/800. Either way, the statue will level him up all the way to the max. Now he has 8000 experience to spend. It keeps counting up on "battle screens" obviously. The point being: Plenty to spend on the 1200 magic level up and the 800 life level up. And many to spare, because the experience doesn't reset upon the next leveled skill, rather it is counted against the balance.
      In fact, runners will skip experience bags and enemies to hold their total experience to maximize gain upon placing a crystal in a stone. Since the leveled up skill (magic, life) restores these bars, they also strategically wait for moments to take levels of magic or life as well. I keep both in mind when I play this game every couple of years or so, but like I said, I don't set any records...
      I haven't looked at the wall jump yet, but I'm going to take a leap of faith for the runner and say it's an unintended glitch. Someone probably talks about it on a commentary run, but any glitches that work on an NES without game genie or such are a fair game in speed runs. No doubt, the glitch was probably discovered on ROM by a runner trying things and saving/loading a lot, but they're there. Some are frame specific and occur with actions on a really exact place (sometimes involving using enemies to set up the situation).
      I really lack the knowledge to explain it better, but from what I've seen watching speed runs, these things are pretty common in these old games. Glitches happen and this stuff was all pretty new for developers at this time. As for the level thing, for what it's worth, I can verify that personally. This is also discussed in guides and speed runs with commentary. Again, the strategies are developed by playing with ROMS where experimentation is facilitated by being able to save and reload anywhere. When you can understand that, it's not that unbelievable. Still, great skill and memory, and some luck are involved...

    • @kenalebla
      @kenalebla 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +toadsonytwo Yeah, the wall jump. Totally legit. Notice he waits a little, casts jump. The physics from his down thrust gives him just enough boost to clear the wall. It's classic for this type of gaming.
      I'm not trying to be an ass, but this does look legit. And, SDA is an organization, not just a collection of cool gaming videos. These runs take place at events and have a live audience usually of 50 people or so. The point is this isn't just Billy Jo Jim Bob posting, it's basically the Guinness Book of World Records for Video Games posting. That being said, ya'll should be more inviting and explain how this can be done instead of not commenting. PR is good. But yeah, this is legit. If you doubt it check out more speed running videos with commentary. They explain glitches and frame perfect stuff. I swear I don't just watch these all day, but they make great second monitor material.
