Indeed Sanawar, Mayo, Doon, etc. are international level schools of India. Nice to see a documentary of this great school. I lived in Chandigarh thus often did make it to this place. It is the oldest co-educational school on our planet. Also though a little bit low-profile is among the top residential schools in India. The main aim of such schools is to give a solid basic education along with leadership qualities similar to schools such as Harrow, Eton, Gordonstoun, etc. Evidently the British were there in India to enrich themselves but they did leave a solid educational system, had also some great intellectuals, brave people, etc. Sanawar is one creation of the British. Sadly in India as of now in general educational standards are getting worse day by day and rather than producing genuine thinkers we are producing in general technicians for fueling mainly Western economies. Though fortunately we do still have have some Islands of Excellence in higher education in the South of India. Schools such as Sanawar must be upgraded and get linked to objective systems such as the Cambridge University and couple this with the Indian culture to remain competitive at the international level, yet have an Indian flavor. Sanawar has so far has produced quite a few leaders in many areas yet it must produce more people in the class of Ajai Singh "Sonny" Mehta. Mehta was able to compete with the top most people globally (that too on his own merit). He had no father or any other individual to back his except his own capability. Mehta headed one of the most formidable publishing organizations namely Alfred A. Knopf and made the latter flourish further. This is what a genuine international leader in any discipline is all about. Mehta certainly benefitted from a solid-wide basic education at Sanawar and built this to a higher level in top institutions globally via further education and experience.
Watching these videos and some of the familiar landmarks, brought nostalgic memories. I was there in the early 50's. Tho' we had to follow a strict routine, I would still say, ' It's the way we have in Sanawar The best school of all And we'll live in its motto's power Till the last bugle call' !
Thanks for taking us back down memory lane , a most enjoyable experience!
