I'm here because I have a chunk of amber that is just so rough it barely looks like amber and I want to smooth and polish just one side so it actually looks like amber lol. It's a huge chunk and since it's barely recognizable I got it for $3.
I'm so pleased your doggy was ok! I found this video while searching for a way to hand polish some raw amber I have. I love how yours turned out! Thank you for this! I hadn't been able to find anyone else with such good instructions for just a basic, 'I am not a gemologist and don't have a lot of expensive kit' job :)
Glad to hear your dog recovered well. I found your video while needing some help making a decision. I was in process of fitting a large 35mm triangular, tear drop piece of Indonesian amber with volcanic ash. It slipped out of my hands, and dropped on the slate floor, chipping off a huge 18mm x 10mm chunk on the back lower area. Very gently with constant drops of water and using a 4/0 jewellers saw blade, I slowly sliced off the broken piece off the bottom edge. Then used your method of sanding, bowl and toothpaste, and your mix of beeswax an coconut oil to give it a lovely finish. The Amber is slightly smaller by 5mm, and looks good in the sterling silver cap and chain I made. I'd love to show you the finished result, though not sure how to.
Oh my as George Takei says! I'm going to give that a shot! I'm wondering if a pumice Stone would work for some shaping? I've got some garbage grade to test it on. Thanks for the tip!!
I'm a bit late to the party but do hope you're still able to see your comments regarding this video. Thank you so much for showing us some great ideas for shaping, polishing, what you can use that's in your house already...and most importantly, how to teach us that things happen when working on projects. How you react to it when nobody is around shows your true character. Well done! I was sorry to hear about your dog...I just don't understand how anybody could hurt another on purpose...Hope he/she is doing well.
I can certainly understand what a scary and heartbreaking situation that was! I’m so sorry someone was so cruel to harm your dog like that. I’m very thankful that he pulled through! And thank you for your video!
Perfect timing! Bought myself some baltic amber from Poland the other day as I wanted to have a crack at polishing it. For me, I will be trying two "compounds" The first will be a piece of ordinary slate that's kept moist and not pressed hard against. Reason for that is it brings up the edges of my knives (I try and collect them) to a mirror like finish and if it can do that to numerous grades of steel.... The other compound I will use is quite cheap to buy and thats cerium oxide. Now that brings up everything from glass to precious stones like new. Unlike you using a cloth, I will be using moist leather. Bought a bunch of offcuts from ebay real cheap a few years back and am still using the same pack. I read in one of the comments about just using water and leather for much harder material (ruby), so it should work a treat on Amber once I have finished shaping it to how I want it. Thanks for the video, was real informative and I really enjoyed it!! Edit: If you wanna keep the polished amber pistine, dont keep them together in a bag as they knock against each other, cause fractures and chips etc.
@@TrollFaceTheMan Yes thanks. All polished and turned into various bits of jewellery and other ornamentations. Eventually given away to friends and family. Slate was good, but the cerium oxide was better at poutting a really nice polish on the pieces.
I am so sorry that some mean people or person hurt that beautiful Baby !! He is gorgeous!! I'm a animal lover myself, and for something that hurts my little friends its very emotional. I get so angry , and I just don't understand how one could do harm to a beautiful animal!!! I hope they get caught !!! I'm glad he has gotten a clean bill of health. Bless You, and Your Family !! I believe the easiest part to test if amber is real is dunk it in water and press your thumb against it and rub, you should feel a sticky but smooth feeling, I polished a piece with 4 sandpaper grits and some aluminum oxide on a microfiber cloth. I’m glad toothpaste works though. It makes it easier to the regular person clicking on this video for information to succeed at what they wanted to do. Great job man.
Congrats on this video, Polish Brother.. Will use this on some pieces I have. Without a tile saw, how can I cut my larger pieces to make smaller pieces for a drop pendant?

I have restored Star Rubys, i use water, and leather . it take's months to do, but ,in the end, it will look amazing, i turned a dull looking Ruby ,into a black cherry velverty hue. it also made £2200 in value when i sold it....... you just rub in tiny round movments you must do the whole stone not just one part, trust me it will take all your time, you can watch a film , talk, read a book , when you get the hang of it......
Tried cerium oxide to help with the rubies? Works wonders on the bits of opal I've done. Even someting as soft as opal still seems to take forever and a day, so I can sympathise with how your hands must cramp up at times on ruby!
So simular experience with my dog. I know what you have been through. I only praise God for saving my puppy's life. Well want to thank you for the amber polish advice, really helped. I never could get the shine back until today after following your advice. I tried the cup, clothes and toothpaste rub, and I applied waxaline to it, and it is shining so well. I am so happy how the amber turned out to be, it got its color and shine back. This ring was an antique and I bought it in US. Now I am in India, but all these years I was not using this ring, but now I do. Thanks to you. And thanks to God. Hope your dog is alright now.

I learned something very interesting from this video which has nothing to do with the subject. I am an electronics engineer and in school I learned that the word electricity was derived from the Greek work for amber ēlektron. It got that name thanks in part to the Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus who noted that when amber is rubbed with wool it creates what we now call static electricity. I had always wondered why would anyone be rubbing amber with wool but now I know they were polishing it.

I understand, so sorry about your dog. In my younger years a nasty neighbor poisoned my dog and shot my cats so I can relate. Also needed a blood transfusion. How people can be so heartless. Wishing you the best with Caesar, so sad ......
So glad that your dog is healthy ! Hope they are still doing well !! I randomly stumbled on your video and now im side eyeing my piece of amber like 🧐. Maybe i’ll give this a shot !
He was doing pretty good but has now come down with Kennel cough from his stay in the hospital. Treating him for it right now. It sounds horrible to hear kennel cough in person but it's typically not very bad and akin to us getting the common cold. Thanks for asking.
RAREBREED398, thank you and you can only hope so. Somebody else's dog was poised with Antifreeze laced meat a town over about a week later. Unfortunately they didn't make it.
First, thank you for the video - great advice for us avid gem/amber collectors. More important I'm a BIG dog person), I hope Caesar is fully recovered and over the horrible people that did this to him. I am going to subscribe and like! Thanks again from the UK :-)
Havent even got into this video. I'm glad your fur child has made it. I wont fill your comments with my fowl language. I'm happy for you. Looking forward to the video. Wish you and yours the best.
I do a similar method for small pieces of fluorite. Another option is to buy some micro mesh sandpaper people use for model trains so you don't have to use wax to fill in scratches. I really enjoyed the video!
I read about how to make an industrial tumbler out of a rear axle of a big semi truck with the rims and tires in place. You want to cut an opening in the highest part of the rim to load rocks. The article said a cover is not needed but I always thought if I was going to do one I would have a hinged door sealed with inner tube rubber. The idea is to set up a motor geared down so the tires rotates slowly and all the rocks stay in the lowest part of the tire at all times tumbling over each other. Each tire can hold about 100 lbs of rocks and you have 4 tires going at all times each one with a different grit. Always use same tire for the same grit. You rotate the rocks once a week and you have a 100 lbs of polished tumbled stones each week. I have been wondering if you could use quartz sand as grit for the first stage to do the rough rounding off? I am posting this on all videos about rock hounding to spread the idea, if this is you channel and you do not like that let me know. The fact that the tumbling will all take place in a rubber tire should help keep the noise down. The rocks should never touch the rim. I have suggested to people that they make a sound proof shed just big enough to be practical so the noise will be minimized. Plus the rubber in a tire is thick and should absorb a lot of the noise. Also you should have a small fan on the motor to keep it cool. A high quality motor will be a must as it will run 24 hours a day. I am no expert but with the proper gearing the motor should not be under too much stress. I would sell the tumbled stones. Once tumbled, you grade them by quality and type. Some would be really valuable. I bet you could average $10 usd per pound with just good found material and more if you have high grade material. Definitely not for the weekend rock hound but if you sell stones or want to, what a cheap way to start. You could tumble other people's rocks for a fee or shares too. You could make one with car tires for a smaller scale operation. There has to be a lot of people with a 30 year in the making, 3 ton pile of rocks out behind their house. With this they could see results from all that collecting.
I liked your video and would love some advice. I bought a wee bead of tourmaline (it was made into a charm). It's very dull and is faceted and about 4-5mm, what could I do at home to make the facets sparkle a bit? Thanks
i found a cluster piece in jersey yesterday , has black stacked on orange with bits of gold all over it . the place i go is mostly fossils and amber . great spot but i havent ever found gold before .
Great video, hope your family and your dog are ok. What's the simpliest way to cut Amber and form it into a perfect circle? I want to make few stones I have into perfect circled beads.
Thank you, glad you liked the video. That is a tough one though. I am not sure there would be any easy way to do that. If they were sufficiently big they could be shaped on a lathe but other than hand sanding that is about all I got.
I'm sorry Ceasar had to go through that messed up poisoning. But glad he is going to be okay. Love the info on polishing Amber. I thought you had to have all the high dollar grinding machines to get those kind of results. Thanks for sharing!
Correct, copal reacts with alcohol and acetone. It's beautiful sometimes though when you get a bug loaded piece from Columbia! Also salt water test, and the static charge test. You can always taste it too, but that can get dicey. I've used belt sander and buffing wheel to shape and polish, but it gums up quickly! Heats up quickly. Been using bees wax and mineral oil when I drill in, but sometimes I'll hit an air pocket and then oops, it cracks in half. I'm using garbage rocks right now to train myself to wire wrap instead of drilling into the piece to epoxy in a bail. Thanks for the video. Also, sorry to hear about your fur baby!!!! I'm speaking profanity right now, just not typing it. Thanks again for the video! I've enjoyed the tips and reading the comments too!
Hello omg I'm so sorry to here this. Poor cesar. I'm hoping he is all happy waggy tail now. Stunning amber. Do I always cut and polish when the amber is wet? I have just bought a huge raw amber piece so so scared I will damage it. I am new to this I'm guessing I wet for drilling my hole. Wet for shaping and wet for polishing? Hope you can help thank you so much
First time on here came to see u polishing stuff and im mad about ur doggo being poisoned. Been 2 years but I hope he is doing well. Sweet little bug 🥰
I appreciate it, sadly he passed away almost a month ago. He was amazing beyond belief. I am trying to get a video in his memory done but it has been very hard.
Many blessing for your dogs recovery...and for you and your family.. I hate that happened..the person that did that should have to take a mouthful of that poison...again many good thoughts sent your way!
Can you use a Dremel to grind those low places that have pits? You can also shape it using a Dremel, then use a buffing wheel Dremel attachment w/a soft cotton wheel & use ultra fine polishing compound on the wheel to polish it to a super glossy finish. Maybe you could do a video on this method?
I wouldn't see why you couldn't, seems like it would work pretty well. As for a video on it..? Any specific reason why you would want to see me specifically do one?
Dremel or Foredom with a roll sander, especially one which is still taped and so makes a tight drum. 240 or 320 grit already on a mandrel should do fine. Alternatively, needle files, flat, barrette, half round at cut 2 then cut 4, followed by sanding to get the marks out, work8ng your way up the grits. 3M also do polishing discs that go up to 1 micron (pale green). Finish with Autosol car polish on a soft cotton mop.
Thank you so much! This helped a lot! I would go out hunting for amber during the summer and i had some nice pieces so i tried this and it worked like a charm! Thanks!!!!
So sorry to hear about your dog he looks a lot like our Staffy. Breaks our hearts, so glad to hear he ok... Makes me mad what greedy people will do to steel stuff that people worked hard for. Thanks for the video.
Very beautiful gem. Amber is my favorite stone, because its reminds me billons years ago the coniferous plant sap trap insects or small animals then fossilized. Thanks your video its so cool
Can you do this with Quartz as well? I bought a big piece for a naruto necklace project and i dont have any machines for cutting it and hoping sanding it down to size and shape would work or is quartz to fragile for constant sanding?
Unfortunately quartz would not be really sandable or polishable without the right type of sandpaper or grit and polishing compounds. For sure you can use toothpaste as the Silicon Dioxide in it is Sand, quartz sand to be more specific. So it's the same hardness.
I am so sorry that someone so cruelly hurt your dog. Thank God and your vet he is alive and healing.
Yes, thankfully he lived healthy and happy for several more years.

Thank you, glad you liked the video and good luck!
I understand, so sorry about your dog. In my younger years a nasty neighbor poisoned my dog and shot my cats so I can relate. Also needed a blood transfusion. How people can be so heartless. Wishing you the best with Caesar, so sad ......
SANDY BROCKMEYER, thank you. Luckily he has been doing well lately. Sorry to hear about what you had to go through too.
Hope you knocked the lights out of those neighbours then.
thanks buddy i never knew about toothpaste for polishing! beautiful amber! and minty fresh too! 😬😂💎
TFS I just happen to run into you on TH-cam and my heart aches for you about your dog oh dear God God help those people I’m sorry for your loss
My dog is still alive, but thank you.
So glad that your dog is healthy ! Hope they are still doing well !! I randomly stumbled on your video and now im side eyeing my piece of amber like 🧐. Maybe i’ll give this a shot !
They are still around but getting fairly old and their age is really starting to show. But still are happy and a ball of love
I suggested amber!!! How's ceaser doing now? Looked like he was recovering pretty well in the vid but hard to tell unless you know the dog personally
That stuff is beautiful btw
He was doing pretty good but has now come down with Kennel cough from his stay in the hospital. Treating him for it right now. It sounds horrible to hear kennel cough in person but it's typically not very bad and akin to us getting the common cold.
Thanks for asking.
And yes I do believe it was you :)
TrollFaceTheMan glad to hear he's doing better. Hope the cough goes away fast!
Talis Thank you, he seems to be doing better today.
Thank you for sharing such a simple guide in shaping and polishing precious stones you are truly helpful and wonderful ^^
Thank you :)
You listed everything in this world except for where you bought amber
Reliable Etsy shops. You get to support small businesses and you usually get higher quality crystals for a cheaper price
Yes, got mine from Etsy store.
What a terrible situation to go through with your dog.. So glad he is all well! Keep up the good videos!
Thank you. He was healthy and well up to this year when he passed suddenly from something unrelated.
People who kill animals shoulb be treated as equally as if they have killed a human.
Oh no! Poor puppy 😓 - I’m glad to hear he is home ❤️
Yes he luckily was healthy and happy up to earlier this year when he sadly passed. Thank you.
Karma is going to make that heartless person who poisoned that beautiful baby.....so happy every thing is ok...
Jennifer Parker, thank you very much. And yes he has been doing well thanks for asking.
Havent even got into this video. I'm glad your fur child has made it. I wont fill your comments with my fowl language. I'm happy for you. Looking forward to the video. Wish you and yours the best.
Thank you
Great looking dog! I'm glad yal are still together.
Thank you, he is still doing well too.
I'm sorry to hear about your dog. I hope he has a full recovery!
Thank you, he has been doing well.
Thankful for you baby's recovering. God knows who the good dog is!
Thank you. He made a full recovery and lived several healthy years after. Though sadly passed away recently.
Thank you for sharing such a simple guide on polishing raw amber you are truly wonderful and generous ^^
Thank you, glad it was useful :)
I do a similar method for small pieces of fluorite. Another option is to buy some micro mesh sandpaper people use for model trains so you don't have to use wax to fill in scratches. I really enjoyed the video!
Thank you. I know Peter brown loves Micro Mesh for finishing all of his stuff.
Interesting information.
So happy to hear Caesar is doing good. Who does that!? Thanks for the info!
The first one you showed after it was polished, BRO DAMN, that's a beauty
Thank you
I liked your video and would love some advice.
Ppl are so disscusting. Am happy that your loved pet is ok and not damaged permenantly
Thank you. He lived healthy and happy several more years after thankfully.
Beautiful job polishing!!!!
@@Grandmasrockin Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, it's very beautiful.👍😊
I'm sorry Ceasar had to go through that messed up poisoning. But glad he is going to be okay. Love the info on polishing Amber. I thought you had to have all the high dollar grinding machines to get those kind of results. Thanks for sharing!
No problem, thank you for watching :]
Thanks.
Ooh nasty, hope you doddy is feeling better, useful and interesting video, thank you🐱💕
Thank you. That brought back the lustre on my amber pendant! ❤️🇨🇦 Took a bit of elbow grease but it works.
Glad to hear :)
Hi did you test in salt water ? I’m finding it hard to tell amber and copal apart. It’s so hard tell over internet.
I have not done that specific test before, no. I imagine it is a density test?
Hello omg I'm so sorry to here this. Poor cesar. I'm hoping he is all happy waggy tail now. Stunning amber. Do I always cut and polish when the amber is wet? I have just bought a huge raw amber piece so so scared I will damage it. I am new to this I'm guessing I wet for drilling my hole. Wet for shaping and wet for polishing? Hope you can help thank you so much
Im so thankful your dog is ok.
So so sorry about your dog.
Thank you for such a helpful video!!
@gsharon5 thank you, glad it was helpful.
One question. Can I use Renaissance Wax instead of of beeswax? Or am I better with a teeny coconut oil?
So glad your pup is ok
Thank you.
What about a Dremel for those uneven surface areas? Enjoyed your video. Thank you. 👍🏻
Sure they can be used, but what to use a fine grit to not gouge the surface.
First time on here came to see u polishing stuff and im mad about ur doggo being poisoned. Been 2 years but I hope he is doing well. Sweet little bug 🥰
Yep, still doing well thank you.
Please make video of how to polish raw aventurine
I haven't heard of that. But I will look into it.
Thank you! Tried this and work amazingly.
Awesome! Thanks for leaving a comment and letting me and others know :)
I know its been 4 years, but Im so sorry about your 4 legged baby. Thank God he was okay. Thank you for your video
I appreciate it, sadly he passed away almost a month ago. He was amazing beyond belief. I am trying to get a video in his memory done but it has been very hard.
@@TrollFaceTheMan I'm so so sorry. How strange God's timing is. I hope that my comment helped you to remember him with a smile in your heart.
@@ivegotonethatcansee1304, it's okay it was not your fault. Thank you. I am glad for the additional time I had with him.
How do you make a hole in the stone to make a necklace. I love this!
Should be able to use a regular wood drill bit and some water to drill it.
Very cool! Will be trying this out with the Amber I have
Many blessing for your dogs recovery...and for you and your family.. I hate that happened..the person that did that should have to take a mouthful of that poison...again many good thoughts sent your way!
Thank you.
Thanks!!!!
Awesome glad to hear it!
So it is Polish amber and you nicely polished it
So sorry to hear about your dog he looks a lot like our Staffy. Breaks our hearts, so glad to hear he ok... Makes me mad what greedy people will do to steel stuff that people worked hard for. Thanks for the video.
Travelgogo.com.au, thank you too.
Hope you have cameras with sound and motion sensors. And alarms.
Very informative. Thanks a lot mate. I too have a piece of raw amber which I wanted to polish it. Now I know the process.
Glad you like it, good luck with your piece!
Very beautiful gem. Amber is my favorite stone, because its reminds me billons years ago the coniferous plant sap trap insects or small animals then fossilized. Thanks your video its so cool
Thank you for the comment :)
Have you tried an embroidery hoop to hold your bandanna? Great information, thank you!
No but someone else had also suggested it and it seems like a pretty good idea.
The test works on the clear Amber but not on the butterscotch, have any ideas about testing it? Jen
Which test?
Sorry to hear about your dog. I'm glad to hear he recovered. Does anyone know of any reliable sources for Baltic Amber?
Thank you.
that was really lovely amber
Thank you.
I'm so sorry for what happened to your dog!I have a question does thus method work with other crystals?
No, amber works well because of it's softness.
Is a garnet soft enough to hand polish out a chip? I have a large-ish faceted nugget but o dropped it and a corner chipped.
Technically anything can be hand polished as long as you use an appropriate grit.
