    I use a rock tumbler but I was curious about hand polishing.. I can only identify 3 types of rock.. Agate, quartz, and Jasper... As for the rest.. If its pretty I polish it.. I do not care about "cracks or inclusions or flaws" to me those are what make the stone beautiful.. Thanks for sharing... I will save your video and 👍 and I look forward to the sore muscles... Lol

    For polishing flat surfaces on my rocks, I use a piece of marble countertop scrap ( about 4"x4") with tumbling grits and water on it, to "flat lap" my planar surfaces. I use the rough backside for steps one and two, and the rest on the smoothly polished front side. It works great. 😉

    Great video! I cut a little cube of green jasper with some cheap diamond bits on my rotary tool but haven't quite known how to polish it; seems I need to move past 320 grit.
    Could you estimate how long each step took?
    Also, how do you know when it's time to move to the next level?

    • @thecrazycanuck2957
      @thecrazycanuck2957  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for the support!
      Love Green Jasper and happy to help.
      Jasper has a hardness level around 6.5-7 while the Sodalite in the video is about a 5.5 hardness level. All this means is its going to take you slightly longer and require a little more elbow grease to polish the Jasper versus my video.
      That being said, here are the answers you seek ;)
      -Each stage took on average about 45min, with some breaks worked in there
      -You'll know when it's time to move on to the next, finer grit stage when you are no longer noticing any change to the surface you are working
      -Make sure to rinse/wet your stone frequently, this will help you identify when to switch grit stages
      Hope this helps!
      Please make sure to subscribe and post a picture of your jasper when its all done and shiny!

I know I’m another comment you mentioned if it’s already flat I can skip to the last sand paper and powder, would that be okay? Hope you can help. Thank you. And one more question if I may. Would using the denim be okay with my Larimar for the last process?

You can use it until it's as polished as your stone...then switch to round wet auto motive paper for dual agitation sanders and it's working well 😁...I have a ton of resin paper left from body work...I always just ripped it to fit my sanding blocks...I'm going to make a table that clamps the paper and use a drip bucket for a gem facet machine...💡

    I have a stone Tumblr from Dan and Darci and 25 pounds of raw sodalite downstairs in my house! I already did a “mixed” tumble which isn’t recommended because of the different hardness of the stones on Mohs scale however, because I didn’t use ceramic pellets in my last batch, one pretty piece of sodalite & green opal totally crumbled into smaller than a speck amount lol. So sad😢😭😂but imo life is a series of trials and errors and I’ve learned my lesson. I’ve thought about going through this route until I got my tumbler. I love it! I wish someone could wrap me a stunner in a pretty intricate wrap and I’ll trade some raw or tumbled stones for it!! Thanks again for this video. Super cool man and you def did a great job shining them up! Anyway to make them appear more lustrous without mineral oil? That’s what my instructions keep saying to “polish” them. My tigers eye chunk in my last batch needs some more shine to it. It’s not nearly as shiny as ones I have already in my personal collection. Anyway so sorry for typing so much. I felt so connected to comment because it’s one of my fav stones to date and was one of my first. That and lapis lol they’re almost one in the same but something about sodalite lol it resonated with me for years now. Many blessings to you and yours🧿🧿💙🤍💙🤍 #sodalitesoul

      Hey, sorry I didn't see this earlier.
      If you are referring to the end stage, you most likely won't need turtle "polish" as this is just a type of wax that gives the car a shiny look, while also providing some weather protection. If you polish the stone enough using the diamond powder, it will shine all on its own

    Hello! I'm a little late to the party...but I have to say, I found this video very helpful (and quite enjoyed the music too, unlike some people!)
    If you don't mind, The Crazy Canuck, would you please answer a few questions for me!?
    1. how many sheets of sandpaper do you end up using at each stage?
    2. for a lot of other lapidary techniques using the Dremel with various accessories, it is STRONGLY advised that one use a respirator (and b/c I started using the Dremel for some of my stones I have purchased a 3M OV/P100 respirator) - should I also be wearing my respirator when doing the hand sanding on the wet-dry sand paper like in your video??
    3. do you have a link for the diamond polishing powder that you used?
    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE - from a fellow Canuck (who happens to be living the USA...ugh!)

    • @thecrazycanuck2957
      @thecrazycanuck2957  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the kind words!
      Each stage used approximately 2-3 sheets.
      As you are using water and a much slower process, you do not need a respirator.
      I do not have a link but the powder is what you get in a tumbling kit, "stage 4"
      Thanks!

      Spheres are difficult as they were shaped by machines originally and can be hard to polish evenly everywhere.
      That being said, yes you would only need the final stage polishing powder. In your case you will want to hold the jeans in your hand amd instead of rubbing your stone on the jeans (like in the video) you will be rubbing the jeans over your sphere.
