  • Video shows the X-jet, a new means of transportation. It is like having your own personal UFO or a flying Segway and people might think it is.
The X-Jet, developed by Williams International, is a small, light-weight Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) system. It is powered by a modified Williams F107 turbofan aircraft engine. It can be be operated by and carry one person and is controlled by leaning in the direction of desired travel and adjusting the power. It can move in any direction, hover, accelerate rapidly, and rotate. It can fly for up to 45 minutes and travel at speeds up to 60 miles per hour (100 km/h). It was evaluated by the U.S. Army in the 1980s, which deemed it inferior to the abilities helicopters and small unmanned aircraft.

Why is nobody developing this aircraft? It could have so many applications today, I know the technology has substantially improved to make this an even more viable and valuable device!

Actually, I imagine the Army's biggest objection was the short duration flight time. To be really practical for anything other than recreational use it needs to have a 2 to 3 hour flight time.

I wonder why no one looks up the patent by using google patents, this would answer a lot of your questions and safe time. Patent number 4,447,024 enjoy.

Indeed. I can think of a few scenarios where this would be helpful, even outside the military.
Imagine an electronically stabilized version for fire rescue, when ladders cannot reach a high window...

Why is nobody developing this technology? You know our development of the components used at the time have greatly improved. It would seem to have many applications in todays world. Aren't there any forward thinking entrepeneurs who would invest in the possibilities?

I can only assume it wasn't cost effective.
I mean, there are only so many uses for a transport that can only carry one person.

The Exhaust is only 4 inches wide so the impingement upon the ground creates a low profile dust cloud as designed by Sam B. Williams of Williams International.

lets toss in some modern day gyros and give it a PS3 sixaxis controller. bolster up the engine to carry 2 or more people and you have a very practical rescue device.

@yumiyumiharu How does it work: a WR19-7 Fanjet engine is positioned vertically and the thrust exits the bottom, the film resolution is so bad you cannot see the Screens that cover the air intakes, it steers like a Bicycle, tilt your head forward and that is the direction you go, tilt your head back and you stop, very much like a SEGWAY. I do have the WASP BOOK, let me know if you want a copy, it explains the entire machine but is too big to send as a email attachment.

The design is available in the Museums, a lot of people don't take the time to go, the Engine is a F107 used in the Cruise missile known as the tomahawk, which is a weapon used by most nations, so the engine is very hard to acquire since they are used to deliver explosives, there in not much left after missile goes boom!

From what I've heard, they are extremely loud which sort of gives away the surprise of an attack. That is why paratrooping is so preferred- silent and deadly. I'm sure they fixed problem. By the way just cause the military says it has lost interest- doesn't mean it has. We wouldn't have stealth aircraft if that were true.
    I want one.

The most incredible thing is that people dont believe its real.. And they wonder why they havent seen a classified air vehicle out in the civilian market ? I think this thing is very noisy, compared to a jetpac f.ex. probably very unstable in different vind conditions, still they usually dont abandon a project unless they have a better alternative.. thats what I would like to see.

Engine failure = death is completely unacceptable. The FAA would never certify such a death-trap, Not only that, but the effectively tiny disk-loading makes for very high fuel consumption and short range. These types of things are absurd to consider for general use. They are specific purpose military aircraft that haven't even found good use in the military arena..

O.K. add computer assisted controls, a more efficient modern jet engine, and instead of emergency air bags an emergency parachute, and only let them fly along specific route systems that are synced electronically with powerful data routing software, and hello jetson's, goodbye traffic. plus if these were built in your city think of all the new jobs. You know those jobs of the future all our elected officials are always talking about.
