I was born in Lincolnshire and represented the country in the late 70's early 80's in the hammer throw and discus. Geoff Capes was a great inspiration to me when I was a young athlete especiallywith him coming from Lincolnshire. I moved to Canada and end up representing country in the hammer throw at the commonweath games and few other international competitions. I'm sad to say I never got to meet him even though we had many people we both knew. One of them being the person on the podium in the clip of him receiving the medal. Bruce Pirnie who sadly passed away in August .
I once shook his hand in a nightclub in Sheffield England in the mid 1980's. He had very large hands I recall. He seemed like a really nice guy,a gentle giant. I was saddened to hear of him passing. Rip big man.
Thank you Geoff, you inspired people like me to get into the gym and into strongman. I never had the chance to meet you but your accolades will carry on to inspire generations🇬🇧💪🏻
I met Geoff Capes at Dinard airport here in France in 2013. I just HAD TO go and say hello. I shook his HUGE hand and he introduced me to his wife. They were both the loveliest warnest souls. I thanked him and walked off then hated myself for not having the nerve to tell him what I really wanted to say, so like a lunatic... I went back to where he was standing waiting for his luggage. "Sorry to bother you again Geoff, but I didn't say what I wanted to say, you see, I wanted to thank you because at school I told everyone you were my dad so I wouldn't get bullied!" He laughed and said "You know... That isn't the first time I had heard that!" And winked. Mission accomplished. Bless him, a true giant of a man in many ways. 💪🇬🇧⚒️
Very sad news, back in the day one of the most recognisable sportsmen in Britain. I understand he was a copper at one time, imagine him escorting you to the station. Rest in peace big fella.🙏
He was brilliant, surprised he never got a knighthood, suppose they only give knighthoods to people who ride horses not people who can actually lift horses up above their heads.
Geoff you were the man who inspired me to get strong! 43 years after receiving a Geoff Capes grip strengthener for Christmas i have a powerlift total over 560kg and loving it. You were great!! Thank you
