Immagine a little version of me working as a waitress in London.
A 23yo Italian girl, who barely knew how to say "hello" and "goodbye" in English back then.
Now, imagine me dealing with cockney, Irish and Scottish accents every day.
Now count how many bottles I gave to my costumers instead of butter. And how many butters instead of bottles?
    Yeah, exactly.

Thank you, by the way. It was this video and videos like this that really helped me nail the Cockney accent for my university's touring children's show production of Peter Pan. Director wanted the pirates to do Cockney, gave us some time to prepare it before rehearsals if we wanted, if not she (being the school's dialect coach) was alright with working with those that didn't. I was the only one that came in with one, and it was so thick and true to life she was the only one that understood me. Made me tone it down (several times) so that the kids could understand it. I can see her point, little American kids are not going to be able to understand a thick Cockney.
Fast forward to a couple weeks ago, and I had a native English woman, I couldn't tell if she was a parent or a teacher, run up to me after the performance and ask if it was a real English accent, and was shocked I wasn't a native! She couldn't tell the difference!

You forgot to address the "l" at the end of the word :)
As in still, pill, Phil, mill etc. In cockney that "l" would sound more like a "w" in water.

The really funny thing is that our English teachers in Croatia really used to emphasise the proper pronunciation of "th" sound. And then you come to London and a lot of natives - Cockneys especially, of course - pronounce it simply as an "f" ... or a "v" or a "d" as you emphasised.

  • @tecnaman9097

Michael Caine was the first British actor to become a big international star speaking his native Cockney dialect in films. Before the sixties only actors with 'cultured or posh' accents played the leading roles, and actors with regional accents were restricted to portraying working class roles. Accents in the UK back in the time used to define a person's 'class' and limit their opportunities. No accent is better than the other. Viva la difference!

That’s pretty spot on. I find with the Cockney accent, the point of resonance is in the throat. It’s at least 80% or the accent. When you talk in the back of your throat, many of the sounds you mention come out. Cheers. Love your videos

My fiance is from East London with a mixed accent between RP and Cockney. I myself am Boston American. The Boston accent is similar to Cockney. Some drop the T in the middle of words and most everyone drops the R at the end of words.
So I've found it somewhat easy to pick it up. Especially the dropping of R and T. Also replacing the TH with W or V has been easy for me.

My parents are Swedish and have spent lots of time in Sweden and the UK. I think it's easier to understand Swedes than some of the regional British accents. Like a thick full-on Cockney or Geordie, the Swede will probably come through more clearly.

We Americans often use a "d" sound for "t". We would say something like "wader" when saying water. We would also say "ow" more like the Cockney "ow". But we don't drop our "h". We would drop "g" at the end of "ing", however. Depending on where in America one is from, of course.

As an American I really like the cockney accent. But basically it seems it’s like American accents NY vs West Coast. New Yorkers would be our cockneys. And just like most Americans like me like the cockney accent as this stereotypical English accent… many in the U.K see the East Coast NY type accents as stereotypical American accents. When really it’s not just like cockneys isn’t really the majorly of English accents… even know us Americans believe it is. I’m in Ca and we talk slower with better letter pronunciation than East Coast accents. Also with a kind of more chill vibe to the accent it’s less abrasive sounding. But like as I said as an American I personally love the cockney accent and think it’s wonderful.

I'm from Kent and I tend to switch between a "posh" more RP type of accent depending on where I am and what i'm doing, for example speaking to a hotel receptionist, a police officer or if i'm on the phone at work. If i'm in an informal setting such as at home, or with people I know aren't "posh" then I adopt a bit more of a cockney accent.
Where it gets fun is when i'm on a fashion shoot with local models (I'm a fashion photographer) and we're in work mode, I have a posh accent but when we're on a break or i'm comfortable with a particular model / hair stylist / client then the cockney accent comes out a bit more.

apparently american slang is just a collection of different words and phrases from various british slang. pipe down has been used at least as far back as the 50s (seen it in used in the tv show "i love lucy) and still here it today. that is what i learned today watching several of these videos. also a lot of the rules of the accents are in american accents like in the south, most would say "watchin'" instead of "watching" and "yuh" instead of "you" and "wadduh" instead of "water". explains why its easier (or so ive heard) for brits to do an american southern accent then any other american accent

I’ve been watching some videos about cockney accent. Like how Paul gives examples. Very natural hahah. He looks a bit nervous at the first half though. Was he uncomfortable facing the camera......

NolePtr I mean it does sound more charming than an American accent, but at least they pronounce "th" words correctly 😂 but seriously it depends on how the American was raised to determine if they speak proper English instead of slang. But I wouldn't say it's one of the worst accents. But I don't live near the average American people so what do I know 🤔

The hard part is teaching French and Romance speakers that H is important in pronunciation, and then they end up finding an English speaker with a Cockney accent.
