I can't recall my first impressions of Mariah but I have been hearing her even before, even when I didn't know her. I remember my sister asking me to print the lyrics of Always Be My Baby on paper back then and I didn't know at that point who she was. Discovering her and her music has been one of the best decisions of my life. All thanks to my friend who, although it's not a trend for young people to listen to Mariah, was a fan of her and introduced her to me. We were only 12 that time!
The You're So Cold intro has to be the best intro ever, jumped octaves like its nothing ... in 2020 Mariah said she doesn't like the song and I was like😳. Can't Let Go could've gone to No.1 (peaked at 2) but her label pulled the record from stores because Mariah really rooted for the record and they wanted to show her who the boss is and gave the reasoning that they pulled it so people would by the album instead.. her ex-husband (label CEO) was a menace.
The label (aka Tommy) also didn’t like the more R&B elements that Mariah incorporated into Can’t Let Go which adds a layer to why they pulled/didn’t push it
Mariah took more creative control on this album regarding its sound and composition. She wrote and co-produced all the songs on the album (she was even nominated for producer of the year at the 1992 grammys). Sonically, she was able to create music that reflected her musical inspirations which is why the songs incorporate elements of 60s and 70s jazz, soul, funk and gospel.
There are many controversies happened here in this album. What I remembered the company was sued since Mariah sampled a song for Emotions Can't let go didn't go number 1 since the management pulled it off in the stores. When it was already in spot 2. Make it happen and Emotions are two of her core songs. It always in her setlist If it's over is a vocal suicide, story: they supposed to do a cover with her idol carole king. But ended making this masterpiece: perfect live performance of this is in grammy You're so cold, best intro of all time. She used to liked it but now 2021, she hated it.
Please don't forget that when you do her next album "Music box" there are TWO bonus songs that aren't on the normal album which you NEED to react to 🤧🤧 trust me. "Do you think of me" and "Everything fades away".

The intro of You're so cold simply answers the question why Mariah is one of the best vocalists ever. Simple. She is singing notes lower than I can and 2 octaves higher than I will ever be able to squeal out.
A little bit about the some songs: 1. Emotions is one of her songs credited for popularizing the usage of the whistle register in pop music. Obviously, she has other songs that have whistles but her insane use of them in this song caught people’s attention (even to this day people are blown away when they hear it). This album has more whistles at the forefront of the songs, something that critics particularly did not like (she was criticized for ‘oversinging’ and taking an impressive instead of expressive approach to singing which to me is ridiculous). Later on she began to use them more to decorate and fortify the melodies of songs as opposed to simply showcasing a high note. 2. Can’t let go was supposed to be her 6th consecutive number one but her label pulled the single from stores to boost album sales. It went to number 2. A close friend of Mariah and one of her background singer, Trey Lorenz, revealed in an interview that although that was the official reason why they pulled the song, it was Tommy Motolla (Mariah’s first husband and president of her label) that made the decision to prove to Mariah that just as he ‘gave’ her a career, he could take it from her if she crossed him (she would predictably have issues with this label later in her career once they got divorced but that’s a story for Butterfly). 3. Make it happen is the first song of an ongoing tradition of uplifting/spiritual songs in Mariah’s discography. These are the songs that lambs always say have saved their lives and helped them get through difficult situations. The next on Music Box would be Hero and Anytime You Need a Friend. 4. She co-wrote If It’s Over with Carole King, one of her idols. 5. We lambs say that the intro to You’re So Cold is the best intro in pop music. The high belts, octave jumps, harmonies, runs and C7 sustained whistle are definitely insane. 6. The Wind is actually about a childhood friend of Mariah’s that died in a drunk driving accident. Even though the song comes from that place it still fits in with the storyline of the album (i hope that answered your question about the origin of the song). Loss is also a recurrent topic in Mariah’s catalog.

It’s about god manifesting her dreams of finally being able to get her start in her career. And also an argument can be made for the album track sent from up above on the debut album

The whistle vocals are not the only highlight of the song Emotions , the high phrases and staggering upperbelts are what set that song apart, making it one of the hardest songs vocally in music history
This album really plays with my feelings!!! Its not an album I consume a lot because its material In my opinion gets overshadowed by the other Mariah albums. Songs like Emotions of course but also Make it Happen, Cant let Go and If Its over are dear to me! Super grateful for your reactions!!!
Although the album kinda has a ‘basic’ title because Emotions is also the name of the lead single, I think that it really reflects the nature of the songs; they’re supposed to take you on an emotional journey of what it is to be in a relationship. Sometimes relationships take sharp 180 turns and that’s why there is sometimes such a shift between the lyrical concepts of each song (for example going from You’re So Cold to So Blessed). They also represent the duality of love and how you can be madly falling for someone while at the same time suffering because of them.

This is one of my top 5 favorite albums by her! I love all of the tracks besides So Blessed. Can't Let Go is my favorite. It's one of the songs that i religiously listen to every single day. By the way, The Wind was about her friend who died in a car accident if i'm not mistaken. I believe you're going to react to Music Box after this - please skip MTV Unplugged, it's just a concert of the same songs that you've listened to, and she had a lot of much better performances of the songs that she performed in this concert. Music Box is one of those albums that fall in between. It's the most "pop-sounding" album in her entire discography, and some people love it because it's very "easy" to the ears, while some people hate it because it's full of "cheesy" ballad songs.
