In 2007 the BDO lost Van Gerwen, King, Klaasen, Van Der Voort and Suljovic to the PDC. The players who Robert Holmes excitedly spoke of defecting from the PDC to the BDO were Steve Alker, Steve Coote and Mark Salmon...I think I know who got the better of those defections!
Martin Adams definitely didn’t defect to the PDC obviously because he knew he wasn’t gonna win anything there
Steve Alker, Steve Coote, and Mark Salmon all came back to the BDO after they knew they couldn’t hack it in the PDC and knew they would get destroyed by Taylor and all the other big names in the PDC
Mervyn is one of the few players in his 50s who are still playing today, and at a high level. King, Beaton and RVB. Mervyn King is a bit miserable but he is a great player. I'd love to be as good as him, who wouldn't?
I agree he's a great player but for his talent and capability he's definitely underachieved and that's not a criticism he's lost a few major finals both from the BDO and PDC where he should have won but couldn't finish the job. He's made a fortune though so he's alright.

After van Barneveld left the BDO in 2006 the organization died a slow and painfull death. I must say that till that moment the BDO was pretty stable, with all the (Dutch) sponsors financing pretty good events like the WDT and the IDL. At 2007 the BDO was still in deniel that they effectivley lost the "war" with the PDC, the loss of van Barneveld was to much for the BDO to recover from.
after Barney left the BDO became nothing but bloody shambles, and only Martin Adams, Bobby George, and Tony Green were the only good thing about the BDO with almost everything in the BDO being pub quality
never mind King had joined after and won't change. some players move to PDC and do nothing Richie Burnett wins nothing, Peter Manley and few others have won little. i support both what i hate most with PDC is some of the crowd who have no respect. like they all get pissed go and watch an event gets it on TV and they shout and scream all the time when players throwing.
Anyway, my problem is not with the PDC but with Sky's monopoly on every sport I like. I don't get to see cricket anymore, I don't get to see a decent standard of darts anymore, and I suspect with Barry Hearn's Sky connections his rejuvenating of snooker will be lost to the terrestrial tv viewer. I have neither the money nor the desire to add to the linings in Rupert Murdoch's pockets so I guess I'm screwed, but it's a shame as I think sport should be for all.

And for the record I thought the standard of darts at the world's was some of the best we have ever seen. Peter Wright breaking the record for 180 in the semi against Gary it really was amazing to watch. Smith and ridz so not sure what quality u are looking for.
Even when mvg and Gary were giving us amazing darts in 2015 and 16. Not to mention 2013 when Taylor best mvg then mvg winning his 1st so really haven't got a clue what quality u are looking for. The bdo is gash let's be honest. The pdc is were all the elite play. Not saying the bdo deisnt have elite player but u can count them on 1 hand tbh

Spot on.
Say what you like about the BDO but the atmosphere live, the accessibility to the players and the friendliness of the players towards the fans at events are much better than the PDC. Of course the overall standard of darts is much better within the PDC but sometimes its about more than that.

@rossatron200 3 of the 4 semi finalists at this years PDC championships were recent BDO players, two of them former champions. Just thought I'd mention that.

king did the right thing here the bdo have contracts that state if you move after lakeside they dont have to pay you and that they have the right to ban you for a year so you have to know what your doing in the legal and money side of things

i forgot to say, that for the people sick of taylor winning everything u gotta remember that even if all the players played under 1 body,Taylor would still win everything cause no 1 is as good as him ,u just gotta look at the averages
look at Martin Adams as an example. Heres a guy who through his early appearences at Lakeside was getting pumped. As players switched over the years and were replaced by lesser players he progressed more to the point were hes now one of the BDOs best! He eventually won the Lakeside and is among the sorriest excuses for a world champ ive seen in any sport. Adams would never switch as he would find himself on the end of some doings. But cant blame him for staying in his comfort zone to earn money

The BDO is a feeder for the PDC there are only a couple of real talents left in the BDO now a days,i would love to see sliverback jump over and i think there might be a chance now hes had a taste this week in the slam,He is WDF No 1 and got a kicking from The Power that just shows how good taylor is .
@bigderekkeene I don't think that's quite true, he has improved greatly which is impressive considering his age, I think his stats will show that. But there is no doubt that the standard is falling in general. There are some good young players still emerging, but the PDC backed by Sky's money will probably lure them away.
As a "Pissed up PDC crowed member" Merv made the right move to the PDC and doing well for himself....Does the BDO have a Premier League....Does the BDO show more than 2 tornaments a year on TV.Does the BDO offer £250k to the champion ........NO!!!!
Whitlock got to the BDO final, playing at a level that was some way below how he played at the PDC world champs 10
If they are counting BDO titles after the split then Phil Taylor should join the BDO next year ;-)
My point is not to defame the man but he is a good indicator of the slipping standard in the BDO through the years that he has been active. He has not improved himself dramatically to become one of the BDO's best but in fact achieved it through the falling standard in players who have come through the BDO or who have replaced those leaving for PDC

Haggar, I think they will renew the contract. The standard is definitely, 100%, not as good as the PDC, we all know that. However, it's this lack of quality that provides entertainment sometimes. Only Taylor fans aren't bored with Phil winning everything. I love Tony O'Shea because he's entertaining. I wouldn't for a second say that he is as good as the PDC guys but he's entertaining, which is what the sport is all about.

True, the only players that have gone back weren't good enough to continue in PDC. It just wouldn't make sense for a player to move from earning £50,000 for winning a tournament to £5,000. BDO is amateur, PDC is big league. People lie numbers don't.

Very funny interviews, whilst King is no saint Robert Holmes is as truthful as Blair is on Iraq's WMD! Just where were all these players that want to leave the PDC and come back to the BDO then Holmes? The BDO has now just become a feeder system for the PDC and Lakeside is now the no.2 inferior world championships. The question is will BBC renew their Lakeside contract in 2010 as nearly all top players have left the BDO & don't compete at Lakeside anymore & the tournament now lacks credibility

@5eurocups2005 It doesn't matter where all the good quality darts players were. Look at where they are now. Why they're there is irrelevant, what's relevant is that the PDC is simply a higher standard of darts.
I hope whoever wins the BDO each year wakes up in the morning and thinks i'm the world darts champion because if they don't they should try and merge the BDO with the PDC.

the bdo has been on life support for 20 years anybody with an ounce of business acumen knows that the pdc is the only place to play and the sad thing is that the bdo had a chance to be part of it and let all the grey old men keep it stuck in the 1980s! just watched pdc final last night and it was brilliant the bdo final will be on this sunday and will be the same old crap old men with loads of fake bling trying to look cool! its over olly! hearn has beaten you quite soundly long live the pdc
@5eurocups2005 Reasons and motives irreleveant. The better finance means a better quality of darts, and a much better venue for the world championships. That's all that matters is the PDC is, by a county mile, better than the BDO.
@5eurocups2005 Those players make a choice to join the PDC because they want to be able to make a living from the sport rather than stick with the BDO and basically play it as a hobby. The PDC is professional darts and the BDO is more of an amateur game, no disrespect to the BDO players, there are some top quality players playing at the BDO but it's not at the same level as the PDC currently.
I know a professional darts player quite well and he says that this king chap is the biggest moaner and whiner he has ever met.
Watch some of his interviews back stage when he loses. The way he belittles the other player who just kicked his backside live on TV, he has done it many times. King along with Hankey are the biggest Wankers to play on the Oche. FACT. Your friend is being modest ha.

Kani Fuker Yes mate and you.....after watching some of the pdc yesterday who were hitting 180s for fun,then watched the repeats late last night of two bdo nanas who should have kept it in the pub instead of on stage....bdo standard is very poor now.cheers kani and anderson should win tonight!

@rossatron200 Probably true, but that's not how you put it before, and people have been saying for a long time how shit BDO players are but when they move they do OK. I remember when Barneveld was winning all the time in the BDO everyone said he would never survive in the PDC yet won the Worlds in his first year.
Barney did well, obviously, but he also never dominated the PDC the way he had the BDO. 4 Lakeside titles in 8 years vs 1 PDC world title in 14 years...

@usm999 in what way you do think they should be respected? do you think we should respect them because they play darts not purely for financial gain?or because they love the sport? here`s what i think,every and i mean every member of the bdo are only there because they can possible lay claim to darts titles and cash prize,if they really loved the sport they would want to play against the best,but it very obvious that they don`t....fear is the main reason they remain at the bdo

The BDO need to realise that darts has moved on. The end of pier style Lakeside is a Joke. The PDC have the crowds, The Money, The Fanfair, Big Arenas and most of all the best players in the world. The BDO should concentrate on grass roots darts and not pretend they have a legitimate world championship.
Before the PDC was formed the BDO was the legitimate World Championship

The BDO is an absolute joke, it's an embarrassment. Why anyone would prefer to play for them rather than the PDC is absolutely baffling to me.
ron sae well this was 11 years ago when both organisations were closer
because alot of the players come up through the BDO system, playing pub n then county darts is run by the BDO so that's how alot of players start off.
James Wade, Gary Anderson, Michael Van gerwen, Phil Taylor, Barney, Simon Whitlock list goes on n on..
I honestly think the BDO should either have more tournaments with more money n thus attract a better class of dart player, most of their current players are county players not professionals like the PDC, or just come together with the PDC as one..at the end of the day it's daft having 2 organisations for the same sport n does nothing but make the BDO look like 2nd rate.. saying that I do watch n enjoy the lakeside but I know the PDC is on a different level, there hasn't been a 9dart finish at Lakeside since 1990, which goes to show the disparity between the two.
