If sega got back into the console market, I'd be there day one in FULL SUPPORT so long as they supported physical game releases. Digital is fine on the side, but physical should NEVER be taken off of the table. For any console.

    • @MarksOnMedia

Unfortunately, that would never happen. Physical is dying. Stores just aren’t carrying physical anymore. And it’s not going to change.

I think the handheld market is about to blow up with nintendo, playstation, Steam, Asus having their initial offerings. If SEGA doesn't get too crazy with pricing they could offer a nice niche handheld system. Maybe bring back their old titles and developers. I can dig it.

Although Sega made numerous financial/marketing mistakes, they were able to develop groundbreaking consoles at a (mostly) realistically-achievable-for-average-consumers price. Honestly, even the 32X and Sega CD could've been successful if they had much more 3rd-party game support. But part of THAT problem was that their groundbreaking consoles were often difficult for outside developers to understand. Sega themselves knew how their consoles should work, but the lackluster US consumer base for Sega CD, 32X and Saturn gave 3rd parties little reason to learn those specific platforms. Dreamcast helped revive Sega's console reputation a bit, but the Sony juggernaut was ultimately too beastly to tame once PS2 came to town. Which is exactly why Sega SHOULDN'T bother trying to compete again in the console realm. Just make new retro-IP games and call it a day.

A lot of Sega's older developers from back in the arcade days and console days were new to the scene, either just graduating high school or dropping out, usually just looking for a good job with decent pay. Some of them never even touched video games before. But they were young and full of vigor and fresh ideas. They were hard working. It's the same with indie devs. It's whoever has a slight interest in the creation of video games or who knows how to program them. A bunch of those programmers back then pulled double duty too, being graphic designers as well as composers who knew the hardware well enough to pull off insane tricks that outside devs never could. The only way to know that is to work for Sega directly. But now every new console is pretty much a PC so it shouldn't be all that different.

SEGA was releasing consoles on the Japanese market and taking forever to get those consoles to the US market. By the time they came out in the US, they were working on their next gen console, so the newly released console in the US only had a few months of life after it was released. This happened starting with the SegaCD and carried on until SEGA stopped making consoles.

What year did Sega CD release in Japan then?! 1988?!?
Sega CD released in 92, Saturn in Nov 94 Japan, May 95 US
      Dreamcast Nov 98 Japan
      9/9/99 US
Sega failed since Japan was all in their feelings about Sega of America making the Genesis a huge success, so they launched Saturn early.. lets not forget the 32X fiasco either
Self implosion was the main cause of their downfall
Along with Nintendo leaving Sony at the altar.. Snes playstation anyone?! Sega also shunned Sony as well.. as someone who grew up seeing it all play out
It was incredible that Playstation first to crack 100million consoles sold, for all of us bickering Snes, Genesis are the best!!
Sony knocked both of them out cold an continue to be a major success sure wii an switch 100mill sold those are their only two!!
      PS 1,2,(cheapest dvd player available)
4 soon to be 5 will sell that many which is insane success
PS3 is my favorite of theirs which they stunted with the high price

@@aceassn716 One little tidbit you might be overlooking regarding the ps5. If we’re talking about this realistically it loses in the most embarrassing way possible. They keep churning out games that don’t make money and those games are one of the reasons why modern gaming sucks. Yeah ps5 is selling but to me nobody’s buying ps5s for the exclusives and most cannot tell a different from the last gen of games. If anything I think the console is underperforming and has a lackluster catalogue of games. Most of these games everyone was excited for have been bombs and consumers seem indignant about the only innovation to come out of this gen is unprofitable subscription services like gamepass and ps plus. Couple that with the problem the games are more expensive than ever and you got a ticking time bomb. Regarding sega themselves Im afraid they will only add to all this.

I would imagine a compact home console, with at least the power of the basic PS4 and ideally nearly the power the future Switch2 (i.e. between 2 and 4 Tflops), using mid-size cartdridges like an EvercadeVS (with patchs, add-ons and backups that can be downloaded inside the cartridge), but of course with also an SSD drive for demateralized games. And I would call it the SEGA io (like the 1 and the 0 bit and like the moon of Jupiter...after the old Sega Saturn and Neptune)

Sega is a big name to us 90s and 00s kids. Anyone that grew up with the Megadrive and Dreamcast and Sonic in its prime days has a lot of love for Sega, but I’m not sure the newer generations of gamers do, I’d bet the majority of these Fortnite kids don’t even know what Sega is… a new console can’t survive and compete solely on the retro nostalgia market. I’d absolutely love Sega to make a console but then I’m also sat here thinking I have a family to feed and not a whole lot of free time to play games like I did 20 years ago. I have a ps5 and a switch, the switch hasn’t been used since last summer, the ps5 plays fifa and occasionally madden, that’s about it… am I realistically going to spend a few £100 on a console I’ll probably not actually play hardly just because I miss the “Segaaa!” Intro and Sonic theme music from my childhood… no I’m not sadly, as much as I wish I would, I’d probably not buy it any time soon from its launch.
Nintendo survives and dominates on it’s uniqueness and its Mario and Pokémon etc exclusivity and brand faces.
Sega has sonic, I don’t know what else it still has, but sonic isn’t Mario, maybe back in the 90s he could rival mario, but now a console isn’t going to survive long if Sonic is it’s face game.
Gaming is too driven by incomplete half ass releases and micro transactions now. We need something new to rescue this decaying scene. But it’ll never happen.

The change in physical media (which is really just specific to the West) opens up a market for those that prefer physical and/or retro. Sega is about to have a huge release year for numerous older and demanded IPs. That could be the water testing they need. Heck, I personally would love a full return to 16-bit. @MainEventMarks Yeah, absolutely. Numbers for the niche and make it count. Even if not Sega, someone (NOT the ripoff market on Amazon, for example, haha) could really carve out a unique rebirth for gaming. With all the great improvements over the last several generations, the death of physical retail at large only highlights the worst aspects of modern gaming: dlcs and pay walls just to make it to points in a game let alone the utter lack of ownership when services end.

Other than covering the fact that Dreamcast failed, the article you reference is wholly inaccurate. The Dreamcast lineup was spectacular and their first party games were right on trend. They launched Visual Concepts which released all of the 2K sports games which were phenomenal, and they had 3rd Party AAA games from Capcom and Namco as well.
They were smothered by Sony financially who locked away several 3rd parties such as EA, had huge a marketing budget, and were able to pack more hardware into the price point such as a DVD player and a high speed modem. Microsoft also came in with a ridiculous budget, and a serious team of hardware and software planning and product lifecycle development, which really just completely changed how the video game industry worked and Sega was just totally overwhelmed.
Further, there was such a disconnect between SOA and SOJ that the company simply could not stick to a cohesive strategy which is also what happened in the 90s.

Normally I would disregard this video, because it's been obvious to me for about 15 years now that Sega is never going to want to rejoin the console market.
But there are two things that might cast a slight glimmer of hope on this:
    1) Sega's been seeing some pretty good success in recent years, with things like the two Sonic movies, Sonic Mania, Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Superstars, Sonic Prime, the Yakuza series, and they've just announced a slew of reboot games for several of their older IP's, which stirred up a lot of excitement with the Sega brand. Sega's actually even had some success with miniature hardware releases like the Genesis Mini, etc. I feel like overall they're a much more liked company now than they were 15/20 years ago.
    2) Lately there's been talk of Microsoft exiting the console industry. If that were to happen, there'd be a void in the space. Sega could potentially reclaim that spot, especially if they went the angle of going full-in on supporting physical media (which is a HUGE concern today in the video game industry).
But again, the problem is that Sega is never going to attempt any of this. I hate to burst everyone's bubble here, but this is really just a pipedream. Sega is perfectly happy with selling their games on all consoles for everyone to play, as well as PC gamers such as myself. The thing with companies is, they want to make money. Therefore, you would need to somehow convince Sega that a more expensive business move is better than the more profitable business move.

Then market it as a true successor to the Dreamcast spirit with sexy sleek design developed by Xbox/SEGA. SEGA is to develop their own proprietary emulators for this console with Online Rollback capabilities. This means SEGA will officially bring all of their back catalogs from both their Arcade and legacy Console eras (from the Master System to Dreamcast) exclusive to this system and all games are now playable Online via The Xbox network. All games can be purchased individually or in bundles. This new Console will also provide gamers with next-gen/indie SEGA and Xbox Exclusive games that would rival games on the Playstation platform. I would definitely buy a new Sega console. But I don't think it would be wise for them in my opinion. They would probably have to break off their partnerships with Microsoft, Playstation, and Nintendo and no longer release their games on those consoles. IP's like Sonic, Persona, and Yakuza would suffer in sales because of that. On the other hand, they could make a new console appealing by adding virtual consoles for Master System, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, and arcade cabinets, and creating new IP's specifically for the new console that take advantage of the hardware and maybe an 8 button controller. That way people would still want a new Sega console alongside their Xbox or Playstation, and Sega could still continue to release major IP's like Sonic on other consoles, with definitive versions on the Sega console. It could also help if they offered a more rewarding version of their own Game Pass with free online multiplayer and occasional free games.

When you completely wipe the existence of your old titles off the face of the earth (as far as paid platforms) and a gamer REALLY WANTS TO PLAY IT, then what? They're just supposed to get over it? That's pretty unfair. To paraphrase Jurassic Park, the internet...uh...finds a way.
