- Darren Burrows played the lovable Ed Chigliak on the CBS tv series "Northern Exposure" from 1990 through 1995. In this video, I take a look at what he's been up to since that show went off the air. #darrenburrows #northernexposure #alaska
I worked on Northern Exposure as a member of the crew. lol. And recently have been trying to rewatch the series on Amazon. Sadly much of the rights to the shows original music have expired and the tone of the original broadcast episodes is lacking. Still… for me personally, it’s a trip down memory lane. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and now live in LA and continue to work on shows. I recently ran into Janine on a film last year that a friend was working on, l and she was a delight to rehash old times with. It’s good to see Daren enjoying life.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing your comments/thoughts!
Hey, that's awesome. That show marked a particular phase in my life, and I took great comfort in watching the series. Of all people to meet in the comments section, a member of the crew... One of my little rituals was to say, "Cue moose" every time I watched the opening credits, and that moose came out on the beat. 😄 I always kind of chuckled to myself, wondering what it must have been like for the wrangler to get that moose to plod along like that. That show had a charm like no other. So unusual... So eccentric... Such a marvelous cast. Thanks for helping make that show a reality. All the best.
@@stephensundstrom6379 I believe the series also had a soundtrack CD released?💽🎩🧤🧣
You are correct!
You are welcome! Thanks for watching my video!
Darren's character, Ed Chigliak was the glue that held the Northern Exposure ensemble together.
Totally agree!
I loved his character.
He was PERFECT for the part. One of my favorite episodes was when Ed gave Ruthann a beautiful spot to serve as her future final resting spot and they joyfully danced on her grave. I choke up every time I see that episode
I love that episode!
ed and ruth ann are my favorites. i watched the original broadcast and now i’m rewatching it on prime. i have found that although i remember the broad strokes of the series i didn’t remember individual story lines so it’s like watching a new show. i’m rationing myself to one per day. thanks for these portraits.
👍
Mine as well.
Same, Ed and Ruth Ann ❤
I liked Ed & Marilyn.
In these days of over exposure to stimuli. I find Northern Exposure so relaxing, entertaining and thought provoking without irratation. Oh, what a great show. Thanks to all the persons who worked on this. So sublime and talented. Did you know John Cullum (Holling) is a Tony Award winning stage actor and singer. He used to understudy Richard Burton. Thank you Prime.
I did know about John Cullum winning a Tony Award. Thanks for watching my video!
John Cullum also played Edward Rutledge, a delegate from to the Continental Congress from So. Carolina in the movie "1776."
IMO one of the best TV series ever made. I did not know John Cullum was a Tony Award winner. I do recall in one of the episodes (season 3 maybe?) if memory serves he sang "Ave Maria" in the town church for Shelly. I remember thinking he had a pretty impressive singing voice. To another point, someone commented how every time the show came on they would say, "cue the moose." Every time the show starts I always say, "Mortyyyyyy," which is the actual name of the moose who strolls through down town during the opening clip. I just love this show.
I found Ed's character very relatable. I'm happy he is doing well!
👍
I'm rewatching it right now. He's still my favorite character.
My wife and I are watching it right now as well. He’s great in it!
We just watched it again. ❤️
A very sweet show. Very endearing. Darren was wonderful in that show.
Agreed!
His ability to be unabashedly vulnerable and sincere made darren's character so likeable. NE is the best series there has ever been.
👍
Watched Northern Exposure religiously in the early 90's. Then it just disappeared. Darn, where did those 30 years go?
👍
Best show ever made. After it ended, I disconnected the cable & have not had it since since I knew NOTHING would ever come close to the quality & soulfulness of Northern Exposure. Ed was most definitely the glue. Glad to hear Darren's got a great life in Missouri & makes beautiful jewelry. Thanks for sharing.
👍
An astonishing show. Watching it little by little from the spring on Prime. Maybe when it ends I’ll start all over again!
👍
I’m currently rewatching it after 30 years. It’s far exceeding my expectations! Every episode from the pilot on are movie quality with great acting and quirky plots, fantastic music, generous scripts, artistically framed and lit shots. The experience of watching the episodes is so rich. I feel like I’ve just seen a great play. What a treat. I’m savoring it. I love Ed’s character. This is how good TV could be.
Totally agree!
Darrin E Burrows made this show. I think he was the only character that appeared in every single episode, if im not mistaking. I loved his character, and in real life, he seemed to be down to earth and humble.
👍
The episode where Ed meets his father was so sad. He was humble and scared and so darn sweet. I nearly cried.
👍
Ed was my favorite character in my favorite tv show, ever. He has done several projects for me and is a very nice guy, very easy to deal with and an excellent artisan. H engraved the dasboard on my 1946 Indian Chief and knocked it out of the park. He also made several pieces of jewelry for my late Mom, which she treasured. Any reboot of NX would not be NX without Darren, but, I respect his desire to be away from Hollyweird.
Thanks for sharing your comments and experiences of working with Darren! It sounds like what I would expect!
I'm on my 3rd rewatch! I love the heartfelt and down-to-earth feel of that show! Thank you for sharing
👍
How did I not know Darren was Billy Drago's Son!?! (They even look alike!) Perhaps I knew at one point & forgot!
They look almost identical!
@@stephensundstrom6379 Only the Son has more of a Hippy Vibe!
👍
I loved that show and now that it’s on Prime I get to enjoy it like it’s a brand new show since I’ve forgotten almost all of the story lines. Ed was one of my favorite characters on that show. What a great character and he played that role to perfection.
Agreed!
I have the DVDs but we are watching it on Prime right now, just binging and is so nice to see it again! I watch some of the episodes numerous times.
Love that show never missed A season or episode. I am currently marathoning the show right now on Prime Video. I'm on Season 5 EP 3 ..this was and still is the best of the best show that aired on TV in the 90's. Brilliant writing, directing, and acting. Some of the episodes were a little goofy and repetitive but on a whole I 💕 it!! Glad to see my favorite character is doing well. I have a feeling they are thinking about a reunion of characters to bring back the show. That's why they put it out here to see what kind of a response it will get. I was 41 years old when this first came out and was thrilled. I watched a zoom interview recently with Janine, John, Barry, Cynthia and Rob. Darren wasn't there and that was disappointing!! Thanks for this post..keep up the good work!!
👍
I always felt that Ed Represented the heart & soul of the show’s creators. 30 years later, I remember having a crush & being convinced that his looks were my idea of perfection.
👍
I loved this show so much! What a great name for this character, it stuck in my brain for so long and now it's back 😅
👍
It was a magical show. This was a great video!
Thank you!
I’m a NE junkie - watched every episode as the highlight of my week. I live not far from Roslyn WA where it was filmed and have been there many times. I own the full set of DVDs and watch it over again every year. It takes me to such a place of nostalgia! I always felt the characters were “my people”.
👍
I had a huge crush on him lol
👍
I came here to say that! In rewatching now on Prime, I still have a massive crush on him! He was physically perfect imo. We’re the same age and now I’ve seen his really gifted artistry in his current craft 😍
Favorite character on that show
👍
great show. i, too, am binge-watching on prime...
👍
Just received the entire series. Cant wait to watch it again.. They dont make character shows like this anymore. It seemed that his character was intertwined with all the other ones.
I totally agree!
I watched Northern exposure when it was on. Seeing this video I realized his role in Casulties of war was brief but impactful
👍
Series 6 when Ed looses the girl and someone to produce his movie was heart wrenching as he cried on Maurices shoulder as Maurice hugged him like the father he needed! Such an emotional tender moment. I still think of them as they all were in 1995🥹. Wish they would produce a 2 hour update on all of the cast. I think Ruthanne and Walt passed in the early 2000s but the rest of the cast is still with us. That would be so great to see them in their old roles again💖 just one more time🫶
👍
I have the COMPLETE Northern Exposure on discs that I watch almost non stop to immerse myself in it’s perfection!
It’s really nice to see all the characters develop in all their subtleties and it never becomes boring.
They really don’t make TV that way anymore. I knew Joel would eventually return to NY and I wasn’t happy with his replacement. It’s hard to capture lightning in a bottle but they did with that show.
👍
@@stephensundstrom6379 truth be told I don’t watch it non stop but I do bing watch, it keeps the storyline straight. I always pick up such a connection with all the character’s point of view. By themselves it would be just a life but all together and intertwined it makes a close knit family. That kind of creativity that results in a successful series is rare. We see it in comedy but a peek in a slice of the world that’s relevant to our lives is why I return to visit Cicely.
I understand what you mean.
I love, love, love that show!! I recently finished rewatching the series. What great characters, writing and wholesome content. The soundtrack is my go to for road trips!! Darren's jewelry looks beautiful. Thanks for catching us up.
I just rewatched the show as well. Thanks for watching my video and sharing your thoughts!
We have the Blueray disk set of Northern Exposure. Loved Darren’s character Ed. My wife and I have connected with him on Facebook. He’s a very down to earth man…..
My wife and I were going through Washington state. We found our selves near Roslyn where the outdoor Sean’s were filmed. It was great to revisit the show. We ate lunch at the Brick and walked around the town visiting the homes that were shown as the characters homes. The office that was the Doctors, is now a gift shop for the show. The man that runs it was an extra on the show. There is a beaded curtain between the front office and Joel’s office and exam room. I took a peek behind the curtain and both rooms were there! The town does embrace the show and it’s great to see!
Very cool! I need to go visit Roslyn!
Wife and I just finished watching the series again on Amazon. Was as good as we remember. Plan to watch it again in the near future.
👍
He was perfect for the part. I'm rewatching the show on Amazon prime. I ordered the DVDs a couple of years ago but some of the shows were left out. I wish they would make more shows like that today.
👍
I loved Ed.
👍
Loved everything about that show. Great writing, casting and the atmosphere was magnificent.
Totally agree!
Darren E. Burrows was adorable as Ed Chigliak on Northern Exposure, I don't think this show would have been so special without Ed. And I don't think Ed would ever have been so special without Darren. Judging by the recent photos of him that I saw, he looks so much like his real life dad, the late, great character actor Billy Drago, famous for playing Frank Nitti in 1987's The Untouchables. I guess the apple didn't exactly fall far from the tree. I didn't know about this fact until now. Thanks so much for the update, Steve! 👍🏻 I have a very special suggestion for you. Would you please consider doing a "Whatever Happened To..." profile of Daniel Hugh Kelly, star of the 1983-86 ABC action/adventure buddy detective series Hardcastle & McCormick, in a future video?
👍
Didn't finish! He was loveable. He just needed to learn to knock the door. Love you Ed and miss you xxx
👍
Ed was one of the best characters on NE. I had such a crush on him in the 90s.
👍
He was also in the tv movie The Siege at Ruby Ridge.
👍
That was a great show in great time
👍
Great video..great show!
Thanks!
Great post 😎🫵🏼
Thanks!
There is a little be of each character in all of us! Prolly why it was so loved!
👍
I loved that show.
👍
Loved that show
👍
I watch Northern Exposure every week night at 4:30pm to 5:30pm, I like the show.
👍
Northern Exposure and China Beach in the early 90's. powerhouse television
Agreed!
Great video, I was a big fan of Northern Exposure!!! 👍👍🙂
Thanks Chris!
Northern Exposure was one of the best shows, funny and poignant at the same time.
👍
Loved the show in the 90's and still watch it on dvd today. Not sure why it's not syndicated for teevee.
👍
I watched Northern Exposure faithfully. It was a classic. Darren E. Burrows was perfect in the part of Ed but, regrettably, I never saw him in any other role.
👍
I had a crush on ED! he was a Fox 🥰
I have a crush on Ed all over again, and I'm 67! It must be that cougar thing...
Ed chigliak legend 😊
👍
Great news . I found Northern exposure on Amazon prime video service as of yesterday..all seasons appear to be available
That is awesome news indeed!
Northern Exposure was a must watch back in the 90's and is still great today. Little did I know when I watched Ed Chigliak learn more about film making that I too would end up a film maker, I am now doing a foundation year on a BAhons film course at Falmouth University England U.K.
👍
my mom would always say i looked like him i was growing my hair out at the same time. my fav is chris the dj.
👍 Chris is great! He probably had some of the toughest lines of dialogue to memorize.
Ed was my favorite!!
👍
Nice work Stephan buddy.
Thanks Pat!

👍
Su personaje fue el más lindo y dulce de la serie.
👍
It is currently showing on Amazon prime.
👍
He was in the movie “Class of 1999”
👍
Just binged the series, watching it for the first time since the 90’s. Ed was definitely the backbone of Cicely.
Non Ed related: Ed and Adam and Joel are my favorites. I loved all of the characters but I cannot understand why they put Maggie and Chris together. That was so odd.
I’m rewatching as well. Just started the 5th season.
Google images of John Corbett and Janine Turner together at award shows and I very much think they were a couple during the first two years of the series.
Yes, Maggie and Chris together was extremely odd. I stopped watching when that happened. I'm re-watching it in Prime, so I'll get to see those last episodes for the first time.
Not even Native Americans in 1990had a problem with his casting in Northern Exposure.
👍
Favorite all time show! Darren tried to reboot the series a few years ago, but nobody picked it up. Wonder if it will ever materialize?
I think it lost whatever momentum it had. I would have loved to seen a reboot of some sort.
I used to wonder if the guy from Untoucables was Ed Chigliak. It's his father! 🙂
They look a lot alike!
Yep...prrrrrr
👍
It seems to me he was seen on Band Of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan, or it was a similar movie where he drove up in a jeep to deliver a message.
He was in Casualties Of War.
@@stephensundstrom6379 Thanks for the info.
Billy Drago will ALWAYS be Barbas 🖤🖤🖤
👍
😂❤ loved Northern Exposure it was a quirky unusual drama/Comedy. Are you related to Dave Sundstrom? 🧑
Absolutely! Dave is my brother.
@@stephensundstrom6379 Cool I'm a long time subscriber of his.🙋🗽🍎
👍 Me too!
@@stephensundstrom6379 😆Haha
I can see the family resemblence. His career might have been handicapped by looking too much like his father because his dad was often playing creeps and lowlives.
That could be true!
I could have sworn I would see Darren E Burrows' name in various TV things as a producer or director...so this is not true?
I don’t think he’s produced any tv shows that I know of.
Wow I didn't know Billy Drago was Darren Burrow's father? 😁
The resemblance is crazy!
@@stephensundstrom6379 I know right! 😂
Criminal character name pronounced "Nitty", not "Nee-tee". Good piece.
Thanks for watching my video!
Nice to have you back Stephen. I loved Northern Exposure.
Thank you my friend!
Northern Exposure was such a well crafted and scripted program with a perfect cast of actors/characters...it's somewhat of a timeless piece of television magic...
I totally agree. Thanks for watching my video!
Northern Exposure was one of a kind. Off beat, quirky characters, interesting and smart scripts and such a perfect setting in the town of Roslyn Washington. I lived up in Alaska back in the early 1980's and met many colorful folk. Northern Exposure, though a purely fictional premise, did capture a strong measure of Alaska's strong independent and quirky nature. All of the actors portrayed their characters to a T. Darren was the glue that held all of the character threads together, in my estimation. A great show and I miss it still.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Stephen, I spoke with Darren about the possibility of a reboot idea about the show. He's on Facebook, subsequently he didn't have any desire to get involved and stated he's retired from acting.
Thanks for sharing this information!
I liked northern exposure I watched every episode never missed a one it was a good show. I was wondering what happened to him thanks for the upload I really appreciate it.
You’re very welcome! Thanks for watching my video!
Oh I loved Ed. I thought he was a little autistic perhaps? He was so funny and lovea9
Autism never crossed my mind with Ed. That’s interesting.
This was my favorite show!!!! I just recently started re-watching them on Prime. ❤️

Loved this show.nor many people did

Such a fun character on such a fun show.

Love Ed ♥️ Darren played him perfectly. A sophisticated yet innocent character, such kind, thoughtful eyes, yet lighthearted and always positive. He really shines in the episode about the origins of Cicely. A wonderful series overall with a superb cast, one of a kind. So great to watch it again and be able to share it with the next generation.
Great comments!
