A good attempt at a test. Unfortunately, it ended up very skewed because only one device is receiving notifications. Notifications and frequent network activity take battery. I suggest trying again with all devices either receiving the same notifications or all devices with no notifications.

That's insane how much it actually drains even with an all black wallpaper (not in a bad way of course). I ended up turning mine off within the first couple days as battery life on my 14 Pro was strangely draining more in the beginning, but eventually overtime the battery started to get better. Maybe 16.1 could improve battery life all around as I've seen some battery life complaints with iOS 16.
Edit: Battery life isn’t as much of a concern for me as my phone properly adjusted itself and it seems to be pretty good now. If you run into the same issue if you got a new 14 series phone, just give it some time and it should start to be noticeably better. I’d say about a week at the latest.

The fact that one of these had notifications coming in constantly is a HUGE confounding factor in an otherwise very interesting and well thought out test. Very shocking to see how much battery life the color version of the always on display takes up even with that handicap on the black background version. Further proof that Apple should provide an option to use AOD with a black background (vs forcing people to use a black wallpaper for their lockscreen if they want to minimize AOD battery drain). Apple has been very responsive to user feedback recently so I have high hopes that improvements to AOD will come soon.

I’m using the always on display with a mostly black wallpaper on my Lock Screen. I usually lay my phone face down for hours throughout the day/night. I’ve noticed that the standby time has decreased much faster than having it off completely but your test puts it in perspective even more.

The AOD dims in low light (normal lighting) conditions, turns off after not using it for a while, turns off while in a bag or jeans,... So standby time is much much better than shown within the video. Especially the bright studio light makes a big difference.

From a computer nerd standpoint. I am just now upgrading from an 8 plus... Went straight for the 14 pro and I was so out of the loop on the apple tech they put into these new phones. First off the larger versions of these phones are HUGE compared to my already big 8 plus so I was able to get the 14 pro instead of the max because I didn't need the size. Now going back to the always on display. I was surprised on how long it lasts even with the display dropping to 1Hz (1 frame per second roughly). Very impressed on this OLED display.
