I’m a PT (11 years now) and I would strongly encourage this caller to only become a PT if someone covers your college education. My six figure debt was a black hole and only by the grace of God and scorched earth sacrifice for several years was I able to pay it off in seven years. The ROI, the direction health care is headed (reimbursement rates and productivity expectations for therapy and the relatively low ceiling in not only pay but career and opportunity advancement) are all concerns I would consider before heading into the field. I love my current role but if I knew 17 years ago what I know now, I would have made other choices.

She is so skilled, she was hired by a university medical office specializing in acupuncture, to do manual therapy. Then she went out on her own and opened a massage office that is calm and soothing while being immaculate and professional. In addition to the reception desk, treatment rooms, office, linen room, and break room, there is a large open space and a bin of yoga mats for classes. In case this lady reads the comments, PT is not what it used to be.
Many of the programs are now doctorates charging tons of money for the program. The salary definitely has not gone up the way other professions have.
Entry level salary for many winds up being 60 to 70,000. Median salary 90k so half below this. Most above it are experienced etc
Meanwhile you've paid as much as people paid for CRNA, PA titles making well well into 6 figures.

What is actually wrong with them? Do they not hear "West Los Angeles College" and realize it is a community college, as inexpensive as she's likely to be able to get? There are just not an infinite number of free college opportunities in our society, especially for returning students who aren't in the military.
But she's either not talking to the community college advisor, or she's getting *criminally* bad advice. There should never be a reason to do TWO Associate's degrees.
The problem is debt, and it's not the student loans that are eating her, it's the car and the credit card debt. If she were starting without debt, she could cash flow any *limited* number of courses she might need to take before enrolling in an appropriate 4 year institution with a good physical therapy program placement rate.
What is wrong with Delony? How does someone get TWO PhDs and not understand how higher education works?? Is the debt free koolaid really so intoxicating that no one can think through how to get her income up through acquiring skills rather than just telling her to work harder?
She needs to stop school and get out of debt. But then what? She's still going to have a massage therapist's income in LA. That math won't math, and it's irrelevant how hard she works, unless she goes into adult services. SHE knows that, which is why being able to be a physical therapist who can actually take insurance payments can make the income make sense. But they can't help her get there, or identify another path to a family sustaining wage for her. So useless.
