    Of the many elements that combine to make this scene a comic gem for the ages, Alan addressing the Styrofoam heads ("Fellas......") as seriously as if they were executives at a board meeting is one of my favorites.

    Never will we see the likes of this again. The best scene from one of the best sitcoms ever! I heard or read somewhere that the Alan Brady character was based on Sid Caesar. Every Alan Brady episode was fantastic! To Carl Reiner, a brilliant talent, we're so glad you listened to Sheldon Leonard. After watching Man of the House, he said that it was a good idea for a show but "we'll just get someone else to play you!" Very grateful for youtube so that today's young people who weren't fortunate to "grow up" with this wonderful series can see what great comedy was. Rest in peace, Carl.

    • @lovesmusic36

      @charles allan For sure! I'm actually going to correct something in my earlier comment. The original pilot was called Head of the Family, not Man of the House. For someone as brilliant as Carl Reiner, I felt I had to get it right!

    From the episode "Coast-To-Coast Big Mouth" [September 15, 1965]. After this, Carl Reiner wore his own toupee as often as he DIDN'T...in fact, years later, in an emergency, Carl asked George Burns if he could borrow HIS toupee for an important dinner. Upon its return, George asked Carl how the dinner went. "Your hair was a riot", Reiner told him.

    Just heard Carl Reiner on CNN (phone in- couldn't believe he's still with us!); when asked if he had a favorite scene with Mary, without hesitation, he cited this one. What a great show, can still watch today and laugh, not out of style/dated or less clever and ironic and funny than today's comedy. In fact, much of today's stuff is TnA, innuendo, and not really all that funny, at least not on TV. She was as funny as the rest of cast, show wouldnt have been as good w/out her! Plus all of her other great acting in other things; Ordinary People, for example. Great actress, comedian, dancer, person. Goodbye, and thank you!

    Carl Reiner was very comfortable and upfront about his baldness. There was a TH-cam video (since taken down) from 1967 when Carl was a guest on "The Mervin Griffin Show." He didn't wear his toupee, and Merv asked him about this. Rather than get sensitive or indignant, Carl explained that he considered his toupee to be a dress accessory. Some nights he felt like wearing it, other nights no.

    • @Jay-vr9ir
      @Jay-vr9ir 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is how I feel about , the wig that I wear .

    • @Kylopod
      @Kylopod 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get the sense actors were often pressured by agents and producers to wear toupees, and wouldn't necessarily have worn them otherwise. I believe that was the case with Sean Connery; maybe Alec Guinness as well--he always had a full head of hair in his movie roles, but unhesitatingly went hair-off in all his other public appearances.
      I also find it fascinating that baldness was a recurring them on The Dick Van Dyke show--in addition to this episode, there were other moments that made reference to his toupee; there was Buddy's continual needling of Mel for his bald head; there was the episode where Rob fears he's going bald and has a nightmare about it. It strikes me that male-pattern baldness was regarded as a much bigger social anxiety and stigma in the '60s than it is today. To be sure, there are still plenty of men today who don't like going bald and make efforts to hide it (if those ads I'm always bombarded with for hair surgery are any indication), but for a lot of other men it's just not that big a deal anymore.

    I know everyone has heard this before but it bears repeating. No rough langauge, no sexual innuendos, no political overtones, just good, solid, creative writing performed by talented actors who loved and respected their craft was the formula for timeless scenes such as this that is as funny today as it was in 1965 and will still be funny 50 years from now. I see proof of that every day when I watch young people do reaction videos to Laurel and Hardy and Abbott and Costello. Fifty years from now people will say "Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno...... I'm sorry but I don't remember who hosted the Tonight Show after that."
