I think part of the reason Harbaugh has hyped up JJ so much is that he’s hoping someone will trade up to take him at 4 so Harrison Jr will fall to the Chargers at 5

My thing with McCarthy is that he had 10 other players on offense that got invited to the combine vs Williams who had 4 and then Maye who had only 1. I think people should pay attention to players who still had good play and elevated less talented teams around them.

If Maye, Williams, Daniels, Penix, & Nix would have played at Michigan, they would have been used the same way and it would have been for the better. J.J. already knew how to gun sling but Harbaugh taught him to control and manage games something the others don't know how to do. This is why scouts are interested. You need your flamethrower to be able to control and manage games as well as ball out. That's J.J. Michigan was all about winning the natty not stat pad. J.J. and most of the starters played just over two quarters the first 7 games. They knew when it was time to make a big play J.J. would get it done in the big games and he did. He elevated Michigan to the top. They don't win it with Cade McNamara or any of the other Michigan QB's.

From the Penn State game onwards he threw for an average of like 150 per game. He benefited heavily from the best Oline in college football and one of the best running offenses. Not always true. There are many elite QBs who played for mid teams in college and ended up being successful. Most notably Patrick Mahomes. Despite averaging literally 5 wins over 3 years at Texas Tech the intangibles were there and it was clear that they would translate to the NFL (at least to some degree). There aren't many QBs who would be taken 10th overall after averaging 5 wins over 3 years. The problem with prospects like JJ is they are elevated to a significant degree by their (dominating) team so assessing what is an intangible vs the product of a well oiled machine can be very difficult. I think he is a talented QB but not worthy of a 1st round pick based on all the available info. He's probably closer in talent to Zach Wilson than Mahomes lol

"Comparing his first-half passing attempts to other 2024 draft quarterbacks, McCarthy led the pack with 199 attempts, excluding screens. However, his involvement in second halves diminished due to Michigan consistently holding significant leads. In fact, in 11 of their games, Michigan had a lead of 21 points or more, leading to McCarthy not even playing in seven fourth quarters. McCarthy has attempted just four passes in the fourth quarter, completing all of them for a total of 46 yards.'

What most people don't look at is the team that is picking 1st overall is the worst team in the league . No QB is going to take a team from dumpster fire to Superbowl, that takes talent in the other 21 positions too.

This is just the way I’ve interpreted it so not saying I’m right.

How did they ever pick, back in the day, when QBs didn't throw so much? Stat-padding QBs aren't necessarily any more legit today than they would be in, say, Terry Bradshaw's day. Not that JJ is Bradshaw by any means, but if you're solely picking on passing yardage, it's a bit crazy to me. And if you're going to hit Michigan for coaching up players, where did they start at? Michigan's recruiting is elite, but not necessarily as elite as USC or LSU, and not in the same positions on the football field. Yes, Michigan won with JJ (and rightfully got people invites to the combine), so if you're going to ding JJ for being on a good team (potential draft picks), you also ought to be able to give him credit for that (win/loss).

  • @Portuducks

Certainly JJ has all the minimal skills and physical traits to be in the NFL, but his most important asset is that he was Jim Harbaugh's pupil for three years. Only Lincoln Riley can rival Harbaugh's track record of developing a sizeable number of relatively successful NFL QBs.
