    I definitely need to get comfortable with taking my time with sketches and building things up. I notice that the works I am most happy with are pieces where I unintentionally follow this process and I by chance didn’t get the urge to go from the early sketches to fine detail. I will often make a sketch and just straight up go to final like art and rendering on the first or second layer and of course I end up giving up because something is off. Either that or I’m spending time cleaning everything up.

    I do think most of the misconceptions of guidelines come from watching professionals draw and trying to copy them. As you get better at art, you don't need as many guidelines, before I used to do all the steps and now I skip the first step and go straight to the general shapes as I have practiced enough to pose and proportion them from the get go without a guideline, but a beginner would need to practice this. Also, while I do guidelines for my normal drawings, I practice drawing ink's with no guidelines or sketches because it builds a understanding of proportions and details faster than doing guidelines for every time you practice. So I would advise if you want to get to a pro level, draw guidelines for your normal drawings but practice doing less to no guidelines as that practice will help you draw guidelines quicker and better and you will eventually get to a pro level.

      The best thing I did to my art is practice putting as little effort as possible into it. I don't mean work but stamina. Holding the pen very light so you don't get tired and sketch as clean as possible giving more thought to each line. Nowadays I only need a few silhouette strokes or no sketch at all before doing final lineart. I used to take hours to draw a single character. Now I take about 5~15 minutes to get detailed clean linework after practicing it for a year. Drawing gets a lot more fun when you can do it effortlessly.

    • @EastGermany-pc2lw
      @EastGermany-pc2lw 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      As someone who never knew how to do eyes, do with this what you want.
      The eyes go just above halfway down the face. I like to start with the top lid and work my way down the eye shape before doing the pupils and lashes. For angles you can start with perpendicular since the bottom part being angled shows a lot more than the top. Once you’ve drawn the eye, angle the top lids down at the sides. Also the pupil I like to draw sometimes because it’s easy to show the angle something is at with a circle. So hopefully that helps!

    It is possible to get the water bottle example more precise without a guideline; however, the way to achieve it is essentially to carefully measure(using observational drawing techniques), and see the guideline in your head before anything is on the page. This skill is practicable by doing pen and ink sketches - always from reference - and striving to make every line as clean as possible, with no pencils or layer magic, using the pen just to mark out either a final line, or the smallest possible indications of proportion, but otherwise doing everything by measuring it out with your eyes, holding up the pen to the reference and moving it to the sketchbook, or by holding the sketchbook side-by-side. I've done over 1000 of these ink sketches while doing anatomy studies this year and it made a monstrous improvement at seeing what I'm going to draw before I draw it. The difference in practicing this way is just in the order I do things: if you start by throwing down lines and then measuring to fix mistakes, you're "guessing, then checking". If you carefully measure, then draw the line, you're "checking, then guessing". You still have to check again to see how much you screwed up when you try to measure it first, but the quality of your initial measurement improves a lot after doing it for months on end, so you go faster, and drawing is less frustrating.
    That said, using guidelines is essential for maximizing the precision of finalized drawings. It becomes more and more necessary to use them as you construct more from imagination, because our eye and muscle memory mostly remembers flat shapes and can't easily adjust for pose and perspective. If you are drawing vague guidelines and not using them well, that's a sign of not really knowing the shapes you're working with, or how the forms work in that perspective. Sometimes all you need is a thumbnail reference to remind you of the shape.
    The reason why 10:43 looks wrong is not head/body ratio, but torso/hips/legs; there's almost no height indicated for the hips. Shrinking the head suggests a taller character, making short hips more plausible, but makes the shoulders too wide and the arms too thick.

      So I can noooowww just eyeball things but I spent years using rulers to draw out guidelines before drawing to get proportions. As someone who prefers more tactile art over digital I was a little off put at first watching this seeing the drag the shape in to place but the more I think about it the more I realize it's the same I did using rulers and right angle rullers. It's a good foundation but after a while you can just eyeball things, takes a ton of practice though.

    As these people get older and study writing alphabet symbols accurately on that four square box, draw manga and such was just a whole ‘nother alphabet system to them.

  • @Soreiya
    @Soreiya 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I think in my case there are a few reasons why I struggle with drawing characters. The biggest one is an imbalance of skill. I can detail and color a lot better than my ability to draw. So I get very frustrated when I am unable to meet my own expectations. The second is my poor vision. It's impacted my observational skills. So it's a bit harder for me to study from photos and such. Things tend to get kinda skewed since I'm so nearsighted. I'll sketch out guidelines, but my uncertainty will cause them to be very rough and messy. Sometimes I wish that I could pay a tutor to help me improve, but it's difficult to find people who would be willing to adapt to someone with such limitations. So my art has just kinda remained stagnated for years.

    I really liked the advice in this video.
    Unfortunately theres a lot empty ranting-around rather than just getting to your point and it drags the video on for far too long.
    I made it to 14:17 (I skipped about 2/3rds of that as well) and im tapping out. I think ive gotten the idea of what you're talking about, I dont predict you're going to say anything new that I need to spend another 15mins on.
    I know it sounds mean, the general gist of your advice is quite helpful and effective and I can tell lots of effort has gone into this, but the effectiveness of your message is being eroded by all this extra baggage.
    I think some good ways to fix this would be:
    - following a stricter structure where certain explainations are contained SOLEY WITHIN their respective sections
    - breaking your video into more formal sections which are all clipped and labelled in the timeline.
    - explaining the structure of your lesson in the intro
    - making a script of tightened bullet points and recording it in sections.
    The title of the video (although clickbaity) was effective at drawing me in, but I had to wait until after the water bottle example before I understood what you actually meant, your video needs a CLEAR example of misusing guidelines somewhere at the start and not a series of vague explained examples, "show dont tell" would be quite effective here.
    Sorry again I know this type of uninvited and quite stern crictical feedback is a bit rude, but in my defence so is clickbaiting me-in with an urgent-toned title that preys upon my insecurites (once again well done you bastard lol) and making me sit through 15 mins and an ad for a store in a country I dont even live-in, until I have any idea wtf you're ACTUALLY talking about.

    so thankful that i found this video. i abandoned my recent digital painting (almost finished) because i felt so tired doing it because i have to repaint parts because they are off and it's taking me too long. it's all because i made really rushed sloppy guidelines. i'm drawing on my sketchbook for almost 2 weeks now and not doing digital art because using my drawing tablet feels so heavy for me. will probably pick it up again soon after some organising of workflow and* using guidelines effectively. thanks for your video

    If I'm going to be honest, I'm somewhat annoyed of people in my school who put guidelines when they're drawing faces but don't even use them, they just put the facial features wherever.

    The lower thigh is the bit above the knee - you meant the calves. Lower arm works for forearm because the entire thing is called the arm, but the entire thing isn't called the thigh but the leg.

  • @fomod_

    One thing tend to do is combine all the sketches together, using different colors on different layers to differentiate the body, face, hair, arms and clothing and make just a big jumbled mess.
    I tend to want to go into details immediately and by the time I start the lineart it's pretty much a rough version of the full lineart already

    About the water bottle, it's not neccessarily wrong to have it misaligned, it depends what degree of realism you're going for. Sure the second one looks a lot cleaner and straighter, but the first one has more character.
    But that's just my opinion.

    As someone who had to struggle to figure out most of these things I'm glad there's a single video to lay them out.
    Also a tip for those doing more realistic or western art styles, consider implementing the planes of the face into your head guidlines.

    @SomeNormalArtist: While I completely agree with you that Guidelines helps, especially me, I cannot agree with the subject of your video. Anytime I see an artist say "You're doing this wrong" I get very curious as to what they're saying. I'm not in the business of writing long messages so I'll just say that not everyone is you. Every person is different, therefore their approach to doing things or needing things maybe different from yours and that's completely fine.
    In the end if they are satisfied with their work and others like it, it really doesn't matter what your opinion is whether they're using something right or wrong. I've seen people go straight to drawing without even using guidelines at all and their work looks amazing. You should look up Jack Kurby if you don't know about him. Many don't and he is the original creator of most of the superheroes people love today. His work doesn't look completely proportionate but then again in comics and in stylized art proportion isn't the number one priority. What matters is; Is the art unique and pleasant to look at by yourself and others. Take care and happy drawing.

    This isn't supposed to be snarky, but thank you for making me realise that this is digital art and therefore I can use shape tools to draw guides.
    For a long time I avoided using guides bc of how I had to manually draw them. Now, I can at least use shape tools to give a starter on guides especially for my characters!
