    NTS:
    1. Master the art of drawing basic shapes at any angle/perspective
    2. Be able to break down a reference of choice into its basic shapes curves and lines
    3. Be able to trace

    the cube stuff is so true it's genuinely insane. im a beginner, i wasn't happy with how "flat" my stuff looked so i started to just spam cubes and blobs with form in perspective and after like a week my skills literally skyrocketed. I'm by no means genuinely good yet but the difference having even a small understanding of 3d space made is actually crazy.
    My favorite way to practice form & basic shapes is to draw a blob and then show how it bends and conforms to perspective using lines that trace the 3d "surface" of the blob. Also stacking squares gets boring so try making square mannequins, a rectangle for the ribcage, a cylinder for the waist and another rectangle for the pelvis.

    I love the way you explained the purpose and how to use tracing. You always hear and see everywhere that "tracing" is bad, but it makes so many starting artists think they should never do anything that looks like tracing. It is indeed such a good way to learn how to understand the shape of a drawing and how to build everything. Of course, do not trace art and claim it as your own, but tracing to practice and train your shape knowledge is something everyone should be doing.

    • @Miraihi
      @Miraihi 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +49

      Tracing is good as long as you do so mindfully and for practice. There may be more or less useful types of practice, but they are never really bad for you.
      Also a whole lot of professional artists use 3D models to reference difficult poses. They can't allow themselves to waste time experimenting, so they essentially trace for the sketch.

    • @anapple6912

    I think this is one of the best videos on anatomy on TH-cam right now. And I spend a lot of time watching art videos on TH-cam. The distinction you made about what really is anatomy and what is another aspect of art's language. I've been doing art professionally for around 15 years and this is the first time I hear another person saying this. The way it's usually taught is flawed because it's a variation of "You have to learn real anatomy to modify it later". I think the problem with this approach is that if it was truth, it would also work the other way around: people would be able to learn "real anatomy" from exaggerated anatomy. The thing is that if it was the case, you would not run into the foreshortening issue you mentioned in one style and not in the other, which is the case. So great job putting this into words. Thank you for making this video.

    You are a great teacher. Not only you teach us the importance of basics to beginners, you also put things into perspective and loosen the pressure we beginners put on ourselves. The "distortion" part of the video is really smart explanation.

    Sick and tired of idiots saying "yOU caNT dRAw weLL, gIT gUD" and when" you go into their channels, they litierally have junior kid level art, with wiggly lines on their character's eyes. Drawing people has gotten so much easier now that I draw the body in shapes. I’ve drawn a front, back, and side facing base all because I used references, references has helped me so much and I’ve improved a lot, my art still needs improving tho cause I’m not great with making the eyes nose mouth & hair.

  • @gn4rpz-the-c4t

    ive honestly taken to saying that anatomy is less about actually *being* accurate, and more about *looking* accurate. ive made legitimate stylistic choices on purpose and been told my anatomy was bad and i shouldnt hide behind my style (it was! a genuine choice! that i made on purpose! i cannot stress that enough!), ive referenced off of positions my body could make and been told my anatomy was bad and i needed to use a reference, etc....
    i DONT have a perfect understanding of how human anatomy is. i make shit up for the hands and feet, i bullshit my poses. a lot of what i do isn't really calculated or really even measured, but i get so many compliments on my anatomy and, god, especially my hands and feet. its the biggest example i have of making things believeable rather than strictly accurate.
    i remember talking about this before, and people got really mad about it and told me im wrong and i shouldnt give such bad advice. now i've got a video i can show that explains my point better than i can!

    • @NonJohns
      @NonJohns 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The thing that worked for me is to learn how to work and rotate
      cubes, cylinders, spheres, rectangular prisms and ellipsoids (funny cubes and spheres)
      Then you take said shapes and then draw them spinning around slowly like an animation set to draw every angle
      Spin one axis at a time, x y z
      then two, and then 3 to get a feel
      then you work on perspective, draw them close, then far and maybe draw them rotating!
      really push how BIG you can exaggerate the faces close to the viewer and really shrink the stuff far away.
      The more silly the stronger the effect.
      finally you combine the shapes together to make more complicated shapes
      Kinda like how a forearm is basically a cylinder with a sphere at the end and then those two shapes are blended together
      These are just suggestions, but the IMPORTANT takeaway is to really hone your sense of experimentation
      !!!Find out what parameters to mess with, and then play with the limits of those parameters!!!
      You'd be surprised with what you can get away with. Like how you can suggest an entire eyeball with just a single dot lol
      anyways.
      GL!
