NTS:
1. Master the art of drawing basic shapes at any angle/perspective
2. Be able to break down a reference of choice into its basic shapes curves and lines
3. Be able to trace
No 2 I have much practice at
Oh, well I'm already working on that. Guess I didn't need to watch the video then lol
the cube stuff is so true it's genuinely insane. im a beginner, i wasn't happy with how "flat" my stuff looked so i started to just spam cubes and blobs with form in perspective and after like a week my skills literally skyrocketed. I'm by no means genuinely good yet but the difference having even a small understanding of 3d space made is actually crazy.
My favorite way to practice form & basic shapes is to draw a blob and then show how it bends and conforms to perspective using lines that trace the 3d "surface" of the blob. Also stacking squares gets boring so try making square mannequins, a rectangle for the ribcage, a cylinder for the waist and another rectangle for the pelvis.
I don't remember who said this, but someone said that for something to be an art style and not a mistake, it has to be that way consistently. I find that really helpful and I just wanted to share it here.
I think his channel is called Excal's art tips, he had a short that said the exact same tip
Unless it's just someone making the same mistake over and over without realizing it and they are somehow consistent with it lol
I study art and design in my sparetime for at least 10 years now. And THAT was the must accurat and encouraging advice i have EVER heard from an TH-cam artist, in case of anatomy. Bravo! :D
*edit: ...most... not must ^^°

I love the way you explained the purpose and how to use tracing. You always hear and see everywhere that "tracing" is bad, but it makes so many starting artists think they should never do anything that looks like tracing. It is indeed such a good way to learn how to understand the shape of a drawing and how to build everything. Of course, do not trace art and claim it as your own, but tracing to practice and train your shape knowledge is something everyone should be doing.
Tracing is good as long as you do so mindfully and for practice. There may be more or less useful types of practice, but they are never really bad for you.
Also a whole lot of professional artists use 3D models to reference difficult poses. They can't allow themselves to waste time experimenting, so they essentially trace for the sketch.
i keep seeing people say how tracing isnt all that bad unless you claim you drew it.
Fr. I've always struggled drawing side profiles but one time, I found it was way easier to learn how to draw things when I traced over references and remember the way it was drawn. 😭😭
I only hear that on Tiktok and Reddit tbf
@@Soshikix I wish I heard it only on there, but remember hearing it from fellow art students back in college.
I used to be confused that if you dissect it while drawing anatomy it is good but thanks to you and this great video it helped me improve my drawing significantly. Thank you very much.
this guy has to be the best youtuber for teaching art- not only that, and he also acknowledges how amazing riot's work is.. as soon as i started playing riot's games i was so entrapped by how beautiful the characters were drawn !
There is no such thing as a "legs too long".
alright buddy we get it you like slenderman type builds
@@parystyrellno legs are one of the main things that can actually be most of your height
@@parystyrell I said the real long legs.
@@SoloAnima1 it's a joke, I repeat it's a joke we can wrap it up😭
@@parystyrell who the fuck wraps up legs
Somenormalartist tutorials have single handedly carried my art career 😂 thx man
Man this is helpful I just tried applying this to my drawing and it was not only easier but also looked better but I'm like 70% sure that I'm going to forget this the next time I draw
Have u drawn again? lol
As someone who is starting to learn art this video actually helped me a lot after watching so many other guides
Honestly I never really understood anatomy,it was always hard for me to draw, but this video really makes it so much simpler!! I subscribed, it was a must at this point! Tysm for making this video! Literally saved me! ❤❤
I think this is one of the best videos on anatomy on TH-cam right now. And I spend a lot of time watching art videos on TH-cam. The distinction you made about what really is anatomy and what is another aspect of art's language. I've been doing art professionally for around 15 years and this is the first time I hear another person saying this. The way it's usually taught is flawed because it's a variation of "You have to learn real anatomy to modify it later". I think the problem with this approach is that if it was truth, it would also work the other way around: people would be able to learn "real anatomy" from exaggerated anatomy. The thing is that if it was the case, you would not run into the foreshortening issue you mentioned in one style and not in the other, which is the case. So great job putting this into words. Thank you for making this video.
You are a great teacher. Not only you teach us the importance of basics to beginners, you also put things into perspective and loosen the pressure we beginners put on ourselves. The "distortion" part of the video is really smart explanation.
5:12 Yes, it is indeed over for you
Ive been following yout tutorials the way you explain things have improved! you sound so confident right now..your tutorials are one of the bases of my arts.
I fast forwarded too far into the video, and saw a log with a ball. Safe to say imma watch this all the way through now. 💀💀
😂😂😂
I've been trying to just draw body parts using my vision, but I'm going to just revisit the basics because my ways aren't working at all. Thanks for the tips!
the best tutorial i watched so far and it helped me the most, still im not a pro but its better
Whenever there's a female animated character in the thumbnail, I brace myself thinking I'm gonna have to listen to a woman talk, and I feel relieved when I hear a man's voice
This gives me hope. I'll be getting an iPad soon, and wanna practice these on that.
Thank you so much!

Yep, so true.
Sick and tired of idiots saying "yOU caNT dRAw weLL, gIT gUD" and when" you go into their channels, they litierally have junior kid level art, with wiggly lines on their character's eyes. Yeah, they go around telling people with decades of art experience to get good, when they clearly haven't lived more than 30 years themselves!!
Drawing people has gotten so much easier now that I draw the body in shapes. I’ve drawn a front, back, and side facing base all because I used references, references has helped me so much and I’ve improved a lot, my art still needs improving tho cause I’m not great with making the eyes nose mouth & hair.
ive honestly taken to saying that anatomy is less about actually *being* accurate, and more about *looking* accurate. ive made legitimate stylistic choices on purpose and been told my anatomy was bad and i shouldnt hide behind my style (it was! a genuine choice! that i made on purpose! i cannot stress that enough!), ive referenced off of positions my body could make and been told my anatomy was bad and i needed to use a reference, etc....
i DONT have a perfect understanding of how human anatomy is. i make shit up for the hands and feet, i bullshit my poses. a lot of what i do isn't really calculated or really even measured, but i get so many compliments on my anatomy and, god, especially my hands and feet. its the biggest example i have of making things believeable rather than strictly accurate.
i remember talking about this before, and people got really mad about it and told me im wrong and i shouldnt give such bad advice. now i've got a video i can show that explains my point better than i can!
Bro omg five years bunch of drawing lessons and yet this one random youtube video shows me my mistakes. Subscribed
The layer comp feature is a EX exclusive btw (fellow EX user)
Only two hours to teach every body part?
It would take atleast 3
Ty for the advice ❤
Nice tutorial, my man is speaking facts, although I kept being distracted by that very peculiar playlist
- 8/10 would recommend to a friend
Every single time I click on this guys videos I get a jump scare when I hear a man instead of a woman 😭
This is the best anatomy tutorial I’ve ever seen
11:41 had me weak. You have yourself a new subscriber, sir
Thank you sensei
I just started, but this... This is awesome. Thanks
tbh this gave me a different pov of anatomy.cause after seeing many videos jst talking about muscles and everything other than visuals, that i was looking for. this video helped me out a lot and made me understand the things missing in my art.thank T_T
Dude thank you so much for this video i have been struggling with this type of stuff for the longest time, breaking things down like this makes it so much easier, Again thank you very much for the helpful video! :)
you know its funny, i was talking to my dad earlier and we where talking about when i was a child, and i always drew shapes with shadows starting with my crayon eating days lol
Ever since then when people ask why i can draw anatomy so well, i just tell them to break it down into basic shapes... but others laugh at me like i'm dumb.
those two hours would be fuckign AWESOME
Awesome tutorial. Great for where I'm at :)
This guy: “anatomy doesn’t need to be perfect”
Me: casually draws semi realistic anatomy while listening this talking and almost drew hands with perfection
This is a self report on my part but I gotta say it. The Minus8 music playlist is absolutely wild bro LMAOOOOOOOOOO AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT NOTICES THIS???
I was just searching if someone noticed that haha.
Right on time
found ur channel again lol its been years since i watched one of ur videos last one i watched was the hair coloring tutorial oof time goes by fast im glad u still uploading videos and being a gigachad
This is so helpful!!
Thanks man, I really needed to hear this!
Thank you for this bro it really helped me understand how to draw in 3d more 🙏🏾
This is how I normally view things, good video!
Is there references on shapes I can practice, sure I know Im supposed to draw 3d shapes but which ones, is there a sheet I can practice drawing or just random 3d shapes.
The thing that worked for me is to learn how to work and rotate
cubes, cylinders, spheres, rectangular prisms and ellipsoids (funny cubes and spheres)
Then you take said shapes and then draw them spinning around slowly like an animation set to draw every angle
Spin one axis at a time, x y z
then two, and then 3 to get a feel
then you work on perspective, draw them close, then far and maybe draw them rotating!
really push how BIG you can exaggerate the faces close to the viewer and really shrink the stuff far away.
The more silly the stronger the effect.
finally you combine the shapes together to make more complicated shapes
Kinda like how a forearm is basically a cylinder with a sphere at the end and then those two shapes are blended together
These are just suggestions, but the IMPORTANT takeaway is to really hone your sense of experimentation
!!!Find out what parameters to mess with, and then play with the limits of those parameters!!!
You'd be surprised with what you can get away with. Like how you can suggest an entire eyeball with just a single dot lol
anyways.
GL!
@@NonJohns OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH I CAN"T THANK YOU ENGOUH TYSMMM
One word: drawabox. Follow their tutorial. Can't share more details since TH-cam loves to delete comments that advertise other sites.
A two hour tutorial video? Shiiiit, we got time sensei.

Soooo useful !! Thanks
I feel like you're angry in 5:10-5:20
I got a two minute unskippable ad while watching this.
6:30 when you said that the subscibe button did a little animation
This video saved my life
for me take my friends head and draw it with some break down an that how i did my head anatomy
same goes for body
"Art isn't real life." Dude, put that on a t-shirt.
Honestly? I actually like the line art process of drawing. Makes my part look less scribbly shit and more visually presentable. It is also less intensive then trying to sketch the figure out, imo, anyways.
Normal artist posted today is a good day
Thank you sir
This is amazing
Now I can finally do line art instead of block painting nicely
Where’s your animating video?? I was gonna start to learn 😔 and I remember being way more simple than how everyone else is making it
I struggle with 2 and 3 could you do a tutorial?
4:05 i thought of PASWG /pos
I just had a clip studio paint ad wtf is this coincidence?
The hand is a Dino nuggie
Aw hell yeah new video
this guys gonna be the next leonardo da vinci
We're one word away from the same username.
Shapes got him hot😂
I’m having trouble making the head shape. My hands shake too much and can’t really get a good head shape. I don’t know if I just need to practice or if I’m doing it wrong?
wait holdon does bro post every new years or some? 😁
After all you just said...my brain couldn't handle it it too much it blowing my brain up i only remember shape part
What happened to your older anatomy tutorial?
is bro art jesus
as someone who only uses krita coz im lazy af, and its free im now gonna see if my uni acc gives clip for free
2 hour video with Normal showing how to draw every body part when?
i'm a traditional artist, i've almost never drew digitally i really want to start doing it tho. I've only practiced a little with ibis paint x but i don't really like it, should i try another program? (do i have to buy an ipad??) i don't know if I'd be able to like drawing digital with the right program, it's so different from drawing on paper.
Can i trace myself
Sigma rizz ngl
the girl in the thumbnail looks like Loona as a human from helluva boss
I feel like the background is trying to tell me he's an artist but I'm not sure
❤❤❤
does not work on Ashley Wood
Ngl I know how to shade abd draw shapes but perfectly and still don’t get anatomy right. So that part didn’t help at all x.x or maybe I just suck and am not gonna draw people like I’d like to 😅
Does anyone know if the smartphone version of CSP can import pose maniacs poses?
Somehow am drawing anatomy without a single problem, but i can't draw faces.
