It's not that there were games of better quality than this, but makers wouldn't boast the presumed "state of the art" quality of games then (that would be a bit like if nowadays alarm clock companies boasted the "state of the art" quality of digits on the lit up display: the quality isn't *bad* but it doesn't occur to you that it's supposed to be mind-bogglingly stunning.I hope this makes sense.

I love how these commercials show the change in arcades and in the economy. In this one, from the 80s, it's two free quarters on your birthday. In the Sugar Rush one (the 90s), it's 4 free quarters on your birthday, proof required. In the Hero's Duty one (modern), it's a "double points power card" on your birthday, legal proof required. Arcades these days use cards, not quarters.

Are you kidding? The 80s were the peak of arcade popularity. Not everyone had home consoles, with the first popular ones not being made until the mid to late 80s. All the kids would go to the arcade to play video games with their allowance, and they were incredibly popular. If their budget was large enough, they could have put sound clips. However given it's literally two sounds in the entire game, they likely wouldn't have bothered.

Seems more like a 90s commercial, Fix It Felix Jr. Is based on Donkey Kong, which came out in 1981, it would probably be more of a 70sish feeling commercial. Also very rare for a Japanese arcade game (im asuming, the company on the cabinet is called "Tobikomi" which is clearly a parody of Nintendo) to sponsor a random arcade in the US.

If anything, Fix-It Felix Jr., Sugar Rush, and Hero's Duty will be playable minigames in the Wreck-It Ralph video game

No it's something they made for the movie. But they did make a real life arcade cabinet with this game so you can actually play it in real life. You can also do it online.

But then Wreck-it Ralph Colors and Generations proved that it's games can be good. Damn those games were fun. Classic Wreck-it Ralph was a delightful suprise.

My this has a nostalgic feeling to it, even if it is a fan-made commercial by the studio, who posted this video.

the commercial is suppose to take place 30 years ago, when the fictional game was introduced and was popular.

Kudos to Disney for making such an authentic looking 80s commercial. It even has the audio/video "quality" we see in these "commercials from the 80s" collections on YT, resembling something that was recorded off the TV on a VHS, right down to the minor video distortion from VHS tracking and "haze" seen at the end of the tape. The fact that the announcer also sounds like the 1980s/1990s Disney video promos really helps... I have to wonder if it's the same person. (Mark Elliot? Brian Cummings?)

I'm almost 10, but I've seen a lot of VHS tapes and broadcasts from that era.

Quite the contrary, Fix-it Felix is going to be an actual Arcade game made at certain Arcade venues and will be added to Theaters that show Wreck-it Ralph (to add a bit more Meta to the Metafiction theme) and it will be Coin operated and 8-Bit. (They did the same thing with Tron Legacy by creating the actual Space Paranoids Arcade Machine)

"....resembling something that was recorded off the TV on a VHS, right down to the minor video distortion from VHS tracking and "haze" seen at the end of the tape."
    Haha! I like that, too.
I def may check this movie out. VERY clever advertising!

I think the Sugar Rush one is meant to be a modern commercial since Sugar Rush is a more modern game. This commercial is obviously set in 1982, where as Sugar Rush wasn't around back then in the Wreck-it Ralph universe.

Actually you know at the beginning of Sonic games on the Genesis how it says "Sega"? That took up a huge portion of the actual game cartridge.
That one second sound clip took up more space than several stages.

The video aging effect is stunning. I have seen many videos in VHS and Beta formats (Many uploaded to TH-cam) with the same ghosting as shown in 0:05 and 0.30 , which is a clear sign of deterioration (or the tracking button not used in the playback)

In all honesty, I'm so glad I was born when I was. I got to live through pretty much the entire Arcade era. The one near us had a members' club that meant bonus tokens and discounted pizza combos. Looking forward to new games and waiting in line to try them was something we don't get much anymore. Well, unless you count midnight releases ^^

The voices are a tad better than they would have been back then, but the tech did exist. See "Sinistar".
Disney has been doing this retro campaign for a year or so. They had even sent out flyers earlier in the development asking for help "looking" for any surviving Fix-it Felix jr. cabinets.

This is way better than the Sugar Rush game commercial, they actually went through a little effort to make it look authentic...
