The wife and I are finally taking the jump to Japan and Vietnam, somewhat inspired by your work.
I was actually in Abashiri around the same week you were in Rishiri. I live in Yokosuka currently and my wife is from Hokkaido so when I can, I like to take solo trips to random places in Japan and wing it so I relate to your experiences a lot.
Glad for your reflections on the North. I was surprised about the mean subtitles you used. I think the people there were doing their best for who they are and what they have. Hope your journey to the South goes well and is more pleasant.

Driving anxiety hilarious with this, several times I thought the airbag was going to kick in. I'm traveling Japan at the moment too, brought my bike here from Australia and just riding around. Food is great, people are great, lots of things to see.

I spent a month with my family driving around Hokkaido,top to bottom and a fair bit in the middle. Absolutely loved it, people were really nice. It is definitely a different vibe to the mainland.

Don't expect to make "connections" with local Japanese people until you have lived here for a long time and communicate with them in Japanese. Success in experience all depends on your mindset. Clean the brain slate, be patient and polite, and do not stick out.
Since most people only go to Rishiri Island for a half day, they tend to go on foot, bicycle, or motorbike which is reasonably priced. Cars are expensive to take on ferries anywhere in Japan.
Hope the rest of your Japanese travels work out for you.
I'd love to go to the more remote parts of japan. Though I am often afraid to for the reasons you talk about in the vid. I will be in sapporo in a couple of weeks, its my first time up north. I am pretty excited to see the area.

Sapporo is a great city, but if you don’t speak Japanese you’re not gonna make deep connections (anywhere in Japan) especially on the go.
I wanted to see the Abashiri prison,the Alcatraz of Japan. The main reason people go there is to be incarcerated, not for tourism where there's no special food, attraction, no anything. It's rather rare for somebody to visit there for tourism per se.
I’ve been in situations while visiting Japan when because I don’t speak Japanese well, I’ve been totally ripped off. It’s hard to negotiate or fully understand the charges because of language barrier. And they are not willing to “make it right”. I still love Japan though and plan to go back. 🤷🏼♀️🫶🇯🇵
