  • International humanitarian law (IHL) limits suffering caused by war. The 1949 Geneva Conventions draws clear lines between those who are fighting in wars and those who are not. They continue to address the challenges people face as a result of modern warfare.
    This video lays out the foundation of the Geneva Conventions.

      Most Western Countries at least try to adapt policies that abide by them… whether or not they are followed is another story.
      Russia, Iran, and China go out of their way to shit on them and try and create a new world order so they are not even bothered by such standards.

      Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions prohibits the taking of hostages.
      Under the Statute of the International Criminal Court, the “taking of hostages” constitutes a war crime in both international and non-international armed conflicts

    The four Geneva Conventions are key international treaties that form the core of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), which regulates the conduct of armed conflicts and seeks to protect those who are not participating in hostilities, such as civilians, medical personnel, and prisoners of war. The conventions, adopted in 1949 after World War II, set out the fundamental rules of war and aim to limit the suffering caused by conflict. They include:
    The First Geneva Convention: Focuses on the protection and care of wounded and sick soldiers on land during war, ensuring they receive medical attention without discrimination.

    The Second Geneva Convention: Extends similar protections to wounded, sick, and shipwrecked soldiers at sea, as well as ensuring they receive appropriate medical care and treatment.

    The Third Geneva Convention: Provides detailed rules for the treatment of prisoners of war, outlining their rights, conditions of detention, and protections against torture and mistreatment.

    The Fourth Geneva Convention: Deals with the protection of civilians during times of war, including the rights of people living under occupation, ensuring they are treated humanely and safeguarding their rights to life, food, medical care, and protection from violence.
    The Geneva Conventions, along with their Additional Protocols, represent the legal framework that limits the brutality of war by safeguarding human dignity, promoting humanitarian efforts, and ensuring that all parties to a conflict adhere to common standards of decency. These conventions serve as the foundation for the laws of war, emphasizing the need for ethical conduct even amidst the chaos of armed conflict.

    For all the people saying that nobody follows the Geneva Convention, countries tend to uphold these rules because they need international support. Other countries will impose harsh economic sanctions or embargos on the country that breaks these laws and the other belligerent may be sent aid. Also, treating the enemy troops well will make the enemy more likely to treat your own troops better.

      O believers! Stand firm for Allah and bear true testimony. Do not let the hatred of a people lead you to injustice. Be just! That is closer to righteousness. And be mindful of Allah. Surely Allah is All-Aware of what you do. (Al Maidah 8)

    I find these laws hypocritical because these laws applies to only state actors like a standing army of a country whereas non state actors like terrorists and insurgents are not expected to follow these rules. This gives those people an unfair advantage which makes them able to produce more tangible success on the battlefield than a standing military organization. It's like a boxing match where one person is expected to follow all the rules and regulations whereas the other is free to break all the rules and regulations. That's why states employ, train and fund non state actors to achieve their objectives against another state because they don't have to follow these rules.

    • @mariejdt
      @mariejdt ปีที่แล้ว

      All Combatants are expected to follow the rules. The Convention makes it clear that it applies to non-State actors and mercenaries.
      Now, they might not follow them while Standing armies do- but that's a good thing: The Criminals don't have any rules but the Police do and the police always has the upper hand in any confrontation. No terrorist org has fighter Jets or Hypersonic missiles
