- Our villain origins series tells you the life and backstory of terrifying foes that we have seen either on television, the big screen or in comics. In today’s video, we’ll be looking at such a villain whose appearance and deeds will make your skin crawl. Where did we find this villain, you ask? Well, we went back to the one city that is overrun by bad guys - Gotham of course. While Penguin, Two-Face, The Riddler, Poison Ivy, and The Joker are all well-known villains, there is one who is particularly twisted, brutal, and scary to witness in action. Victor Zsasz, a serial killer, is that adversary.
In June 1992, the character first appeared in Batman: Shadow of the Bat #1. He's a sadomasochistic and psychopathic serial murderer who marks himself with a tally mark for each of his victims. Zsasz is a member of Batman's rogue's gallery, a group of villains that regularly oppose the superhero, Batman. The character has appeared in a variety of non-comics mediums. Zsasz has been voiced by Danny Jacobs in the Batman: Arkham video game franchise, he was also played in live-action by Anthony Carrigan on the television series Gotham and Alex Morf in the second season of the Arrowverse series Batwoman. The character was also brought to life by Tim Booth in the film Batman Begins (2005), and Chris Messina in the DC Extended Universe film Birds of Prey (2020).

What makes Zsasz truly terrifying is that he's a plausible villain. I can viee a serial killer who keeps a tally on his body happening in real life unlike some of the more colorful Batman villains.

I love Zsasz. Despite his nihilistic and merciless demeanor, even since the beginning, he has* always managed to hold a humorous air of theatric drama different from other Batman villans. He enjoys what he does, but knows it's the only thing holding him together. This make him* very human yet untouchable at the same time.

Zsasz is great. His nihilistic philosophies make him a compelling villain for batman. He's both physically strong and very intelligent. His debut comic The Last Arkham is one my favorite batman comics.

Zsasz is almost too realistic for comics, but if Batmans fighting crime who else would he be likely to meet but a total sicko? Anthony Carrigan from Gotham lost all his hair to Alopecia in his 20s

Victor is a bad person because he's a bad person. He's like Cletus Cassidy, only without the symbiot. You can't blame his parents death, or the Penguin beating him at a card game for how he became.

Zsasz is a crazy psycho, but his backstory and how he lost his money to gambling. I get that he was coping with the death of his family, but he made a really stupid choice even when he had a successful life, but threw all of it away.
His backstory is what would Bruce could have been if he didn't know how to cope with the lost of his parents. Bruce is very lucky that Alfred was there for him all his life.

I believe gambling made Zsasz feel something, as his parents' death made him emotionally numb.
@@leonrobinson8180 Yeah I get it. Zsasz was trying to cope with it, but gambling all the money that he and his family earn over the years and lost it all less than a week is very bad choice.
Tbf, a lot if not all of batmans villains have tragic back stories. Killer Croc especially makes me feel bad, the guy tried everything to be a normal person but the world only ever saw him as a monster, so as he became more primal he just snapped.
If the world is only gonna see him as a monster, then what is the point of trying to he something else.

He's one of my favorites! So glad you covered him. Gotham had probably the best Zsasz(because he's criminally under portrayed). Though they did turn him into comic relief. I wanna see him in a t.v show or movie in all of his unfiltered lunacy!

@@ComicBookGuy420 i had stopped watching Gotham after S1 or earlier than that and I don’t have any recollection of Zsasz since it had been a long time but he could work as a Jack the Ripper type of character because he is pretty horrifying basically a serial killer that everyone in real life is afraid of. Perfect example is in Arkham City with the logs and in Arkham Asylum

Zsasz should be in the sequel for the batman. It would keep with the dark tone and also he has ties with the penguin. But instead of bald, go with blonde military buzzcut.
Seriously I don’t know what they were thinking in Birds of Prey (2021) ruining this character. Hopefully Matt Reeves Batman series can change the character to be way better to his counterpart.
i loved his portrayal in the Gotham TV series. he was just..... a joy to watch, lol.
I liked Gotham's version. The portrayal was hilarious and was easily one of my favourite characters. That being said, I hope the next live action version whether film or series is as dark and twisted as the comic book version.

@@ComicBookGuy420 yes, the goddamn tapes especially. The summary file of his background was one thing, but holy crap, the tapes…they were just…WTF. The voice of actor of Zsasz did an incredible job delivering a truly believably f*cked up serial killer.
Arkham Asylum was the first I’d ever heard of him, and It was hard for me to say “yeah it’s fiction”. Zsasz felt like he COULD actually be a real serial killer, versus many of the arkham inmates.😳😰

....never heard of him until the GOTHAM TV SHOW....and ANTHONY did a great job playing him....looking at this video i was not surprised to hear he has a penchant for ARMANI....because when i would see Anthony and what costumes he wore i thought the costume designer didn't do him justice....he needed...ARMANI.....

All I've ever wanted was a series based on the Arkham universe. It would look and sound just like the games. It was just the definitivex version of Batman, Gotham and the world Batverse. Also, the Joker, voiced by Hamil, and looking like in the game is what my mind instantly conjures up whenever it hears Joker.

One other notable appearance is in the Injustice movie, while the movie itself was terrible, when Regime Superman planned on slaughtering the murderous inmates who have been allowed to escape to kill again for years, Zsasz was the only one to be killed, by Damien Wayne. Zsasz is one of the villains right up there with Joker that the fact he's allowed to keep living after all the atrocities he's committed is unforgivable.
Meanwhile in the comics, Regime Superman would have Zsasz kill Alfred.
