The Riddler Origins - A Broken Genius's Terrifying And Saddening Backstory - Batman's Rogue Gallery

  • Riddle me this: who loves question marked-paraphernalia, the colour green, and is about to finally get the nuanced on-screen portrayal he so rightfully deserves? There’s something delightfully straightforward about second-tier comic book villains that gets you invested in them despite their woefully simplistic motivations. Not every character will get a Joker-esque background lore compendium, complete with Tarantino-level depictions of mania and graphic violence. But that’s what makes them so fun to invest in; they’re like wrestling gimmicks given corporeal form, with their zany antics and borderline-comical origin stories fueling their villainous intentions. DC’s Greatest Detective has a rogue’s gallery teeming with heavy-hitters whose actions affect not just Gotham City, but the DCU on a grander scale. At the same time, he has to also deal with ruffians whose seemingly-petty ambitions often drive the Caped Crusader to the end of his wits. These fiends aren’t driven by a moral quest or an unquenchable thirst for power; they just want to watch the world burn and have some fun as they strike the first match. It just so happens that one of The Dark Knights’ most-enduring adversaries is a guy who really, really likes puzzles. First appearing in Detective Comics #140 all the way back in 1948, The Riddler has given Bruce Wayne sleepless nights for decades with nothing more than a steel rod and his wits. And with Matt Reeves’ The Batman featuring him in the primary antagonist’s role, there’s never been a better time to discuss the origins of the Prince of Puzzlers. This is The Riddler’s Origins - Explored.

    I always liked the Riddler as a concept to have a villain to showcase Batman's detective skill and not just gadgets and violence. Most of Batman's villains he just tends to brute force his way through with maybe a distraction or two, but Riddler stories can have it just be a longform mystery

    As a kid, I remember Batman Forever being one of my favourite movies - with Jim Carrey as the Riddler. The Arkham games' version of the character is also quite a respectable portrayal. But the Telltale version of the Riddler knocked it out of the park for me. He was more than an annoyance, he was a genuine threat.

    • @That80sGuy1972
      @That80sGuy1972 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Telltale was a far more authentic Riddler. Batman Forever kind of made him a cheat-code using ridiculous idiot (with ironic genius intellect) version of Riddler, a parody of the Riddler. I totally love Jim Carrey but I totally hate his version of the Riddler. I love the Riddler and I love riddles and other puzzles. Batman Forever's Riddler was a puzzle-book nerd insane ADHD version of Riddler that used a mind-scanning thing to be Riddler level bright instead of just being Riddler. Well, that movie also really crapped all over Two-Face... those two together were the stand-in for The Joker, a guy the previous movie killed off.

      @woooudo They should have made up a different name instead of Selena Kyle, meaning she's a different Catwoman. That would have made her character just fine then. I don't know if it was fanfiction or what but there is something out there where an alternative DC universe Gotham had multiple Catwomen territorially competing with each other... with Selena Kyle working with Batman in such a way that she was just reducing competition, not really being a hero. Well, still being an occasional anti-hero because there are certain villain types she just won't allow to do what they do.

    Back in 1996… I was on a family holiday in Disneyland Florida. One afternoon my mum and I got caught in a thunder storm in Disney market place and took shelter at a table under an awning. There was an older a guy and a lady in her 30s sitting there. They said we were welcome to sit at the table as there were two free seats. We chatted with them (I’m from the U.K.) and after a whole we noticed people kept coming up to the table and asking the man for his autograph. We then realised that he was Frank Gorshin, the riddler from the 1960s Batman show. We got his autograph and took pictures with him and he was really nice.

      Riddler is a legit genius. He's brighter than Bruce Wayne, he's that smart. He's almost Lex Luthor level smart, in the genius way. Why is he 2nd tier? It's obvious. It's his smug sense of intellectual superiority compounded by his need for showmanship on top of needing who he targets to solve riddles (and puzzles), intentionally dropping clues, to foil his actions if they solve them. He's the non-boring smart version of the now-popular Saw killer... only he never thought he was on some kind of mission to do blah blah blah because of blah blah blah to demonstrate (insert sophistry rant here).

    I love this character. I also share with my friends my regular "Riddle me this" little things. I share a riddle and invite people to solve it, it's more often than not a riddle of my own creation. One of my last ones, the answer was "Bat Flies". It took months before they asked me for the answer. It turns out, nobody actually knew what bat flies were and thought my riddle was insane drunken rambling until I posted a link to the bat flies video.
    One of my most beloved moment, I keep that secret, was when my friends started calling me "Riddler".
    I'm no supervillain but my friends and associates do love my riddles. I also love the moment someone solves a really hard riddle and they get major kudos for it from everyone else. Me, pretty much an idiot when it comes to social matters, a guy who regularly rubs people the wrong way just by interacting with them, brought joy to them via mere riddles... I made joy in a group as someone who tends to tick people off just by not catching social clues... regularly. To say that made me smile a bit is an understatement... and I generally don't care what people think of me. It turns out, I do care if a lot of people are happy with what I do. I just don't understand why.

    • @coachjester4735
      @coachjester4735 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think we both know why you care, it is the same reason why most do what they do for adoration, their feeling of lacking in approval. You do care what people think of you, and it is ok to admit it. I say it with respect for you, as I like ya style. So just laugh at yourself when you miss the so called social clues, and/or who gives a toss what others deem to be the norm, the "social" part is just another group setting rules they feel comfortable with, F#%K em, have your own social group that fits your rules. Riddle on bro, riddle on :)

I did suspect it among many possibilities, like all of the really silly things that are socially normal and my self-reflective theories... but I digress. Again, thank you. The biggest riddles I ponder are more social ones. They are often more perplexing because they are akin to sophistry because they are on both sides of literally everything and self-contradicting just as often as they are revealing.
      I see the common theme. I do like the common aspect. I generally don't care what people think but I do care when I get the group I made likes me. Thank you for connecting the dots. I now know why I care. It's a comfort thing. Thank you for giving me a bit more in self-awareness. I seek adoration. I have that flaw and it is in riddles. I do like to joke about my flaws to make people around me laugh too. I like making people happy even if it is just making people laugh. I have a social group... I never pondered that. I have people who love my riddles. I never pondered how great that was. Thank you for showing me that too. I have been neglecting them for a while. I will stop doing that.

    I really think Sugar and Spice could have a much longer running time in the old classic movie Batman Forever ya know. Jim Carry did a very good job with that character well. and that riddler Caine smashed many things whoops bummer.
    the Nintendo Batman games all sucked because of many glitch problems which means gamers flushed money down the tube when buying them of course.
    " I'm glitch man."
    Joker : " bwaaaah ha ha ha ha!!!!!"

    The classic orgin story is a great backstory, especially with a current day-Riddler as depicted in the Arkham-games, where he starts out in Arkham Orgins as trying to blackmail corrupt Gothamites, and later on in the timeline trying to outsmart and beat Batman.
    That being said, I like the Gotham and Batman Forever-versions as well, although not for the same reasons

    I grew up with Frank Gorshin's Riddler... And I must be honest - While THE JOKER is an Obvious favourite for any Comic Book Fan... The Riddler has always taken the very close Second Place in my Favourite Batman Villains!
    While I feel it tried to hard to humanise him, Edward Nygma's Portrayal in GOTHAM was BRILLIANT! In fact, I feel that GOTHAM for all its faults did a great job of helping to realise many of these very Over The Top Villains in a very believable way... And that renewed my faith that someone could make Nygma come to life on the Big Screen...
    (OK! Going to gush over Gotham for a Moment... I was late to watching the vast majority of the series having only got through season 1 and then half of season 2... But Finally binge watched the whole lot on Netflix... The Idea of Nygma developing "Emotions" for The Penguin was ... I will be honest, I thought at first this was TERRIBLE... was actually a stroke of GENIUS!!!)
    It would be an interesting aspect to explore if anyone ever does try to make a Riddler spin off or put him front and centre more often... For all the Genius in the world, The one riddle that no one can solve is also one he would struggle with - WHAT IS LOVE? We all struggle with it as there is no single answer... We know it when we feel it but no one can truly describe it as for everyone it is different... And for someone obsessed with Answers - This would push Nygma to the depths of insanity! Trying to solve the unsolvable!
    Honestly, Its time that WB took more chances... Yes, The Joker is a Popular character - But he is NOT the be all and end all of the DCEU... With a Rouges Gallery only matched by Marvels Spider-Man, There are so many places they can go and should... And knowing The Riddler is going to be the main Protagonist of THE BATMAN - I am now HYPED TO HELL!
    Look, I love the Joker - We all do... But come on, As fans of DC... Lets be honest - THE JOKER IS OVERPLAYED AND OVERHYPED NOW! WB have KILLED The Joker!

    No disrespect to Frank Gorshin, but because of his and Jim Carrey's over-the-top portrayal of a maniacal trickster, many people have always considered the Riddler a mere Joker wannabe.
    I can't say anything about Paul Dano's interpretation yet, but IMO the best Riddler is the genius with a flair for the theatrical and a compulsive disorder to leave clues.
    He doesn't have to crack jokes and cackle like a maniac all the time.
    Leave that to the Joker.
