I think that it's such a commonly known thing that most people don't even bother explaining it. Like the time I stayed at my friend's apartment in Manhattan and had no idea his couch turned into a bed for a week. He just assumed I knew that all sofas in NY City pull out.

@@JohnnyFD 😂 In my teens, friend slept over on our sofa-bed. Early morning, thought she'd taken our dog for a walk... Until other friend and I were sitting there with a cuppa... she knocked like crazy from underneath us 😱 That taught us not to lie about our age, like the previous evening, to get in to see 'The Exorcist' 🤥😳😁

Good to see your eyes are improving from the other day, Johnny. I used to place cooled chamomile tea bags on eyes, even on pet's eyes if they were caked up. It always seemed to remedy poorly eyes, even when someone had conjunctivitis once, it worked for them, much to everyone's surprise! My parents always only wanted homes with a fireplace or woodstove for back-up. Guess that stems from the times when power cuts were a thing? I don't have central heating, just an open fire here (3-bed-house), old habits die hard... gotta love a log fire in Wintertime.
Great your hot water came back. Hope your sauna made you feel refreshed. And, I hope the doggies are all okay at the shelter.

Mini splits are becoming far more popular in the USA, especially in Manhattan - one of the other things is that mini splits are much less expensive than central heating and air. 2 years ago, I had to replace my very old system that never worked well, but because our whole house is ducted, we had to replace it. We replaced with a system designed for a house twice the size we actually needed because it gets so hot and humid in sub-tropical Queensland, Australia.
The biggest issue with central/ducted heat & air is that you can't close off more than 20% of the vents without losing a lot of efficiency. With a mini split you can just close the door of the rooms you don't need to heat or cool, which saves money.

So you know, a male mid twenties Ukrainian cut in line yesterday and then he was upset with me for making him get back behind me... since he had decided to cut in front of just me and one of my daughters and not anyone. He said he didn't speak English in perfect English and so I told him he can understand body language and I nudged him aside and put him behind us in line.
He decided to sit with just his dessert and then called someone complaining that I had discriminated against Ukrainian. I decided to sit at the table next to him with my back to him. He was very annoyed with me. But, I don't let anyone skip in front of me. So I treated him the same as I would anyone cutting in front of me.
In my house there is a Tovala. It can steam food, bake, roast, and warm food. I don't like the weekly shipments. If I forget to say skip shipment they randomly pick foods and send and that is very annoying. Also there is a barista set up with a variety of methods for making coffee: V60 and other drip methods, brewed, pressure boiler, milk froth maker, and so forth. Outside there is a smoker, outdoor kitchen, outdoor burners, outdoor metal flat surface for cooking stir fries, fried rice and so forth. The outdoor kitchen is for when we have a hurricane and there is no electricity. The outdoor kitchen burns wood, charcoal and utilizes propane.

Heat pumps, they work great. But also make sure the power is "Normal" when you run it. So if there is a brownout, do not run it. I have a 120 volt power meter that I used in my RV. Then if the power went below 105 volts, I could shut off my air conditioner to not damage it. I have a voltage booster for RV parks with bad power in them.
So a plug in volt meter would be great. You could also buy something called a Kill-A-Watt. It will watch the voltage, give a digital display, and also if you wanted to measure the wattage of something it is easy.
At least you could run your gas stove and oven to keep your place a little warmer, and make sure you have a window open, so you get in fresh air, and not suffocate with carbon monoxide poison. They sell carbon monoxide detectors right next to the smoke alarms at the hardware store.
As for the cold showers, not to laugh at you, but go to the gym, and shower there? That is actually what a lot of homeless people do, buy a $15 a month gym club membership.
I have installed heat pumps for about 40 years! They work by directing the hot gas from the compressor outside in the summer, and inside in the winter to warm the air. I see the ductless heat pumps hanging on the outside of many buildings in your video's! They must be very popular in Ukraine. I would not want to work on one that is located on the wall of a 5 story tall building, some of them in your video - they are over 75 feet off of the ground! Not me! Maybe they can be repaired by working on them while standing inside the building and reaching out the window? They must have some system.
So how do you get 4 watts of heat from 1 watt of power used by the heat pump? Well it would be easy for me to explain in Btu's, not watts. So a 20 SEER heat pump can move 20,000 Btu's of heat in the cooling mode with 1 KW of electricity. Heating is about the same, when it is about 8C or 45F outside.
So to make heat with a electric resistance heater, it can make 3,415 Btu's per KW. The heat pump can move 20,000 Btu's per KW. So you get to move about 6 times as much heat into your home with a heat pump, than if you used 1 KW to produce 3,415 Btu's with a electric heater. On a colder day, say it is -10C outside, or 16F. Then the heat pump can move about 15,000 Btu's per KW, or about 5 times as much as running a electric heater.
How? On a -10C day, the air into the heat pump is -10C and the air out is -17C. So it collects that 7C of temperature difference to boil the refrigerant, then uses the compressor to bring the pressure up to about 375 PSI or 400 PSI, then the refrigerant in the indoor coil will be about 130F, and the air across it can blow that warm air into your home.
So even on a -25C day, it is possible to warm the air in your home, by putting out even colder air from the outdoor unit.
As for making your home hot water system to work when the power is out. That is possible, depending on how large the water pump is, and if it is a steam heat system, or hot water? And how much power is required. A simple lithium battery system can keep it running. It just needs to be sized right, and have enough battery storage to keep it running for a few hours until the power is back on. Or hook up a solar panel, and then run it all day long! (Yes I hear you have very short days in the winter).
If it is a steam system, and has a 1 HP pump, and that uses about 1,000 watts per hour, then it is easy to size the battery and boiler to run a couple of hours per day. That will at least prevent freezing inside. The boiler might use 175 watts if it has a fan, or only 40 watts without the fan. It might also be possible to hand pump water into the boiler, and then let it run on a battery system until the low water level trips off the boiler. So if the boiler holds about 10 gallons of water, that is 80 pounds and can allow 80,000 Btu's of steam to be produced, and run the boiler about 20 - 30 minutes.
So a 10 KW battery and a pure sine wave inverter of the correct watt rating to run the pump, it will work. So I might suggest 5,000 watt inverter, and if the load is only 1,200 watts, then you will be fine, and the inverter will never overheat. If you run the battery at 48 volts, then the wire size can be much smaller, compared to running at 24 volts or 12 volts. If the battery is 10 KW, and the load is 1,200 watts, then it will run about 6 hours before you need to recharge the battery.

Not that I needed a reminder on why it is so important to keep up the support for Ukraine but some others might and you are Johnny doing valuable work by letting us see what life is like there during these difficult times. They have had these in the US for a while. We have Daikin splits in our house. Works great! I like it way better than central air and heat. I like it cooler and hubby likes it warm. So I can change temp in each room or turn off. They are great!
There are only a couple options for colder states because they don’t work well under 15f unless you get the hyper heat for sub zero F. models. If you don’t like the look of them LG makes them as art the box on the wall is a digital photo. Brands also make floor and low wall like a radiator and end tables. So many options.

The reindeer herders of the Siberian north use an animal skin pup tent inside their yurt. It is around 6' tall. At their head they place a small candle. The inside tent contains the candle heat. You might be able to build a tent over your bed out of bubble wrap but blankets are probably more than sufficient. Don't you have a large pot to boil bath water ? Then you mix with cold water to create warm water and use a giant ladle to pour over you like Philippines. I think you put candle in bathroom until air is warm.

The reason for the toaster is that you can cook other stuff without having to watch the toast to prevent it from burning, which you would have to do if toasting it in a pan. The timer on the toaster frees you up to cook other stuff. I use a toaster to make toast while cooking eggs and using an electric kettle to boil water for coffee.

I work at a Diner, we use toasters constantly for this reason. It's automatic, it's perfect every time, and it only does 1 thing but really, really fucking well. Why not buy a toaster if you're going to make toast anyways? Even a cheap one does the job, you don't need a $250 industrial 8-slot toaster with a touchscreen and Bluetooth speaker.

We do have mini splits in the US, we've had them for quite a while but they aren't whole house so they aren't very popular yet, US homes are too large with too many rooms for mini splits. And for the initial money you have to lay out 3 window air conditioners is much cheaper and for whole house we have the heat pump. I think things will stat to change though because there are now companies like MrCool do it yourself installation systems. And if you don't properly clean your mini split at the recommended intervals it can give off a strong odor of cat urine.

I found they are financial opportunists and use men to advantage themselves and are not in the relationship for the husband but more to better themselves. These types of women would leave you the minute you get sick or loose your job she won't support you.

Sorry Johnny I’m just trying to help, a Coleman stove, heater and lantern are good, it’s like camping out. Oh btw Natural Gas is much safer than propane, natural gas is lighter and evaporates up, LP is heavier than air and will Stack.
I wish I was there to help out, but I’m working on it.
When Ukraine is rebuilt it will be an amazing place. The smart technology that’s available is almost entirely energy free. It’s called a Green House design that uses rainwater, and ‘Gray Water’ is stored to flush toilets.
I know Architects that patterned their designs. The whole house is run off a 10 Kilowatt box. Now this was around 10 years ago so I would think that more advanced designs are available now.
