  • What started as a great journey to Bangkok's BKK (Suvarnabhumi Airport) almost ended in me missing my flight due to the chaos of a last minute gate change.

    Hey Johnny, another great travel vlog, thank you :)
    Seeing those Burger King Menus made me wonder.... it's been a minute since I've eaten fast food.... but I thought BK was more expensive here, and it definitely is. The conversion rate is currently $1.49 AUD = $1 USD. Which is terrific for Americans and Europeans traveling to Oz.... just not the other way round.
    Also, not sure what the airport WiFi is like here but my home internet , which is supposed to be unlimited is 45 MBPS down and 20 up. But, NordVPN halves my Download speed. And that is if I set it to a local area, like Brisbane or Sydney, which I find horribly frustrating.

    Your assessment of IST is spot-on; there was a lot of walking that had to be done. It is supposed to be the best airport Turkey has designed... With respect to the passengers standing at the gate when they should be sitting down, the way I see it as long as they aren't preventing me from going where I need to go they can do whatever they want. As I read in the comments section, you have to choose your battles wisely; telling these people what they should be doing was a complete waste of time.

    • @JohnnyFD
      @JohnnyFD  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree that I need to start choosing my battles wisely, and that's why I let it go after the first attempt. But standing at the gate caused the boarding to be delayed, and almost caused me to miss the flight, as I incorrectly assumed they were waiting to board the same flight. Luckily I triple checked and went around them to the front only to find myself being one of the last to board.

    • @cannondale514
      @cannondale514 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The thing to do, if the airport staff have told you exactly where you need to be to board your flight, is to just brush past them if they are standing in the way. They want to stand for the next flight? More fool them!@@JohnnyFD

    • @JohnnyFD

    Hi Johnny, another great travel vlog, thank you :) Also your information about Istanbul airport is wrong. I will inform you on this matter. The issue is definitely not Erdoğan. Large-bodied aircraft could not land at the old airport. Since Eskişehir is the center of the world, it is a nice transfer area in Istanbul. For this reason, Türkiye needed a larger airport. Now large-bodied planes can land and there is more passenger traffic.
    HUBS AND OTHER LARGER AIRPORTS PROGRESSING
    Passenger traffic at the Majors (top 5 European airports) grew by +14.6% in October compared to the same period last year, but still remained -5% below their pre-pandemic levels (October 2019).
    London-Heathrow (+18.1% vs. Oct 2022 | -0.5% vs. Oct 2019) further reinforced its position as the busiest European airport. The British hub was followed by Istanbul (+11.2% vs. Oct 2022 | +6.9% vs. Oct 2019), Paris-CDG (+10.5% vs. Oct 2022 | -10% vs. Oct 2019), Amsterdam-Schiphol (+18.5% vs. Oct 2022 | -9.5% vs. Oct 2019) and Frankfurt (+14.9% vs. Oct 2022 | -11.9% vs Oct 2019). There was plenty room for Atatürk Airport to add a gate that would accommodate wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 747-8. It wouldn't had cost $12 billion to do so. Either way, it doesn't explain why IST is so poorly designed and without trams. P.S. Turkey is only the center of the world to flat-earthers and Turks.
