    Great vid
    I usually glue some wet n dry paper to my workbench and rub the trowel on that
    Seems to work a lot better as it’s a dead flat surface and a quick spray of water now and again keeps it lubed for a smooth finish
    I would never use a new trowel without sanding it
    I do like my trowels razor sharp though and great for cutting tape etc

    Cheers for the video mate. I broke in my Marshalltown gold 14” this evening. I used 320 grit though. Took a lot longer and it wears the sandpaper out quicker, but it’s less risky than with lower grit.
    Can’t believe how it turned out. Edges, underside, and corners are as smooth as silk now. Not a single raised bump or burr!

    I had 2 Marshalltown stainless steel trowels with the wooden handle when I started as an apprentice and I still have one of those trowels the other one got pinched I used it for wet plastering Browning bonding drywall dot and dab to break it in I was pretty much wet plastering 4 days a week so it eventually broke in by plastering on to brick and block and is sharp as a razor as it's now 16 years old I just wish I knew about breaking in trowels sooner lol

    Takes me back to when I had my Tyzack Centenary double tangs. After 6 months I nearly threw my last one away, but it ended up as the best finishing trowel I had until the rivets went.

      Steve Phillips it's suppose to wear to the way you plaster no two trowels are alike after some years

    • @StevePhillips

      I got it so the tool wears to the way the plasterer uses it to suit him/her best.

    you will never keep the edge straight doing it that way Geordie lad; Scouser's stick a sheet on a piece of glass and run the edge across so all the edge is sanded at the same time.

    Great video all other video is all about breaking your new trowel, but no mention on how for people to just do their homes or 1st timers... so putting plaster on, finishing, flex all trowel you need to break it in ???

      @alexbaldwin1267 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're just doing one house and not daily in the trade just do as he's doing in the vid to help get it on the wall smoother. Flexi trowels shouldn't need and prep

    Is there a way of breaking it in perfectly without having to use it on sand/cement? Maybe use 600 grit wet and dry, or 1000 grit?

    Might seem a dense question but do you only round off the corners on the front corners not the rear? Thanks for posting this it’s a great vid.

    • @gibbopaul66
      @gibbopaul66  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No mate it’s not a dense question at all you only need to round the front corners off but make sure you don’t take too much of the off though or you will ruin the trowel thank for watching my video don’t forget to subscribe to my channel 👍🏻

    • @NiktheEnglishGreekCypriot
      @NiktheEnglishGreekCypriot 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Marshalltown 13x5 spring steel (carbon). I’ve got one that’s deathly sharp, and one I’m wearing in now which is getting there. The broken in one dinks really easily. I’ve also got a permashape as a back up which I’m currently sanding the edges and will start using it on bonding etc

    • @Gramayr

      Has to be salt & vinegar. The acid in the vinegar etches the metal and the salt acts as an abrasive.

    Great video mate, I've just subscribed. I hear the way to break the trowel in is "just use it" but it must take forever when only skimming. Also, how does sand and cement rendering speed it up? Cross trowelling the dried render? Can't see how any wet mix can sharpen steel. Cheers!

    • @gibbopaul66
      @gibbopaul66  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can get a trowel broke in with just skimming but it does take a while though using render even though its wet it acts like sandpaper just by spreading and crossing over it will take half the time to break it in thanks for your question and supporting my channel.
