Does this require a headband if you wanted to go hands free? Or can you pinch it between the bridge of your eye brow like a monocle?

You should be able to use it like a monocle, given the flared ridge of the eye piece.

It looked like you had it upside down? If you look on the box the pick shows it the other way around, plus you shouldn't need to hold it that close to get magnification
