Every time a big studio says "player freedom," we almost always get a big empty world, and a largely linear story with small choices throughout that only slightly changes the ending. One ending is the good ending. The other one is the bad ending, and last just makes you feel like shit.
@@pixels_per_minute Except Naughty Dog isn’t Ubisoft. I don’t mind them giving no / nominal changes in game endings or story impact, but if they can incorporate in game freedom in exploration and gameplay that would be brilliant. Think the semi open world section of TLOU2 but where you have a lot of options in how to traverse or tackle situations / combat and on a bigger scale.
As someone whose favorite genre is the book-like experiences we used to get in the 2000s (especially Bioware before they completely pivoted their style), I now wince at the buzzword "player freedom" for exactly those reasons. Some games are better big. But the focused narrative experience has been almost completely neglected in AAA spaces for the last few decades.
@@amolbhatia1449 has naughty dog done anything to deserve that kind of wishful thinking? at least ubisoft used to be fairly innovative and unafraid to make changes or improve functionality. giving us the same old gameplay with some choices sprinkled in doesnt really sound very fun at all, and naughty dog hasnt made a meaningful change to their combat and exploration formulas since uncharted came out nearly 20 years ago...
@ Ubisoft’s innovation largely revolves around running a business and trying to find the next big thing to milk the consumer for. Naughty Dog’s focus is on excellence and because they deliver they don’t necessarily need to chase trends (like copying Witcher which Ubisoft have been doing for a decade now). Specifically on Naughty Dog, they essentially have been the studio that created the benchmark for the industry for narrative experiences with Uncharted and then totally set a new bar with TLOU. So one aspect of the modern gaming experience owes a lot to them. When it comes to gameplay and exploration, I’d say that this was probably what held back their earlier titles slightly but with TLOU2, they delivered some of the absolute best third person action stealth gameplay I’ve experienced. The exploration was also much improved with some non linear areas. But again, let’s be realistic here - they’re not wizards. A Mario game doesn’t have branching story paths. A FS game doesn’t have realistic cutscenes full of dialogue and human interaction. One experience doesn’t have to encapsulate everything.
I like when a game gives the player AGENCY. This is different from choice. It means the things you do as the player have an effect on the world. They can't make the player do something and have the character they control decide to stop and give up in a cut scene.
Pretty sure that's part of it. It just depends where the agency is. Is it the environment, the gameplay loop or the story. RDR2 had a lot of agency, but that was focused on the gameplay loop and environment, because the ending was predetermined. Also, the character changing their mind in a cutscene doesn't change the fact that they considered something, and that could change their relationship with other characters. We just got to wait and see.
@blackmanwithcomputer The ending was but Arthurs character development is up to the player so it works well with the open world. If RDR 1 was not a thing they likely would have had lots of different endings, Maybe even have Low honour Arthur survive and High honour Arthur Die.
Add a simple prompt called "Press M for Mimir". This option can be toggles on and can be used by Kratos to trigger a chat with Mimir whilst traversing the world for random facts, in-game lore, jokes, etc. but can also be used for puzzle hints when in the vicinity of or engaging with a puzzle in the world.

I used to work at a place where you got pizza dinners every friday. We did overtime and stuff like that. Then there were no more pizza fridays or paid breakfast. But the overtime continues. Based on Naughty Dog's previous games and what they wanted initially for TLOU P2, player freedom could mean a bigger world, possibly more metroidvania design than open world. Deeper stealth that actually competes with MGS5, not just basic hide and seek, but passive options like decoys and disguises. Maybe create your own weapons based on the melee weapons system they had in Part 2. Possibly more options to encounters besides kill, hide or run to checkpoint.

It would have been cool to have a Last of Us version of "The Division" where theres a main hub. Like they release a city, town, or harbor with cruise ships as large servers that you have to battle and liberate from the infected. Mix it with the State of Decay NPC and base mechanics and it would awesome. Or get some inspiration from GTA where you can unlock your own homes/bases/locations you can invite your own party into. Then go into the PVP areas for rare supplies and equipment. Or go to Danger zones where the PVP damage is off but you explore and collect supplies with your party and extract with your bag/inventory.

That’s role playing and character creation. I believe he is referring to gameplay freedom.
did you think your comment was funny or
I remember somewhere hearing they were doing a new fantasy IP, maybe it's that.
Given how pretentious and up it's own ass TLOU2 story was, here's hoping that a focus on a different type of way of creating a narrative will make the games better.
I just want them to show something man. It’s been 4 years since Part 2…but at the same time I’m glad crunch has been adressed so I’m willing to wait.
Thanks!
Remember the days when multiplayer was almost the standard instead of an add on or a totally separate game?
Yeah and venezuela is a democracy.
Brazil as well
I didn’t mind crunch, but I guess it wasn’t ND style crunch. Extra crunchy crunch.
Can’t help but think this is finally going to be the open world Last Of Us.
player freedom? like open world survival with crafting elements? how risky of naughty dog
*Just a reminder for people in the comments:* You can glaze ND because they are wizards, but stay realistic with what they are actually capable of.
I don't think we get a Naughty Dog game this generation
If they use assets from their online game, they may do some big game like BG3 but in their style
An extraction shower would be AMAZING
Nvm
Asmongold needs that
If you think about it, game quality really got bad after the whole "work at home" shit started. I think this is a huge reason as to why games are coming out in such poor quality. Gane develolment takes alot of communication between different teamas and leads theres no way you can have that working from home
Just put Amy Henning to write in a safe and comfortable and the artists well treated and they'll be fine. I always look forward to what NaughtyDog does
It would have been cool to have a Last of Us version of "The Division" where theres a main hub.
So theres no crunch, but now you can work from home? Sounds like crunch with more steps.
Starfield is the game that came to mind.
Why?

Yes, you can also play as one built like Dylan Mulvaney

No THEY need THEM

12:14 You can't make a game DSP proof.
I’m hoping this means they’re trying to make something like MGS5 with S tier acting. But I assume it’ll just be a marginally better Ubisoft game like Horizon/Days Gone or something like that.
While i'm hopeful, player freedom from big developer usually mean "we want to make openworld now"... because every single game needs to be openworld in modern gaming.
Sounds good to me.
Naughty Dog is dead to me after TLOU2+Neil Drukmann and stupid effortless re-releases.
Mario 64 has player freedom, you can choose how tackle stars and the order of it, that game came out more than 20 years ago
I think MindsEye showed good screenshots. The cars look good.
There's no way the game he was talking about was Baldur's Gate 3 right?
Wow i didn't expect this comment secfion to be this bad, i thougbt most of the ND hate had died down already, but seems like a lot of people are still butthurt, especially people who didn't play the game. The next ND game is already being hated for 1 sentence dropped by an unofficial source? Yikes
It funny trash games pile up day after day from AAA
they really need to factor in the work from home conditions when figuring what is more efficient. I could easily some people being very inefficient if they have a family who do not respect boundaries, but someone who is not being interrupted being pretty efficient. they need to consider more factors when figuring out what works best.

well which is it capcom???
My pet peeve is forced slow walking/crawling sections. Idk why every single game has it.

Vampire First hour . Specially the first scene is priceless.
U wouldn't believe humans done the voice acting and writing
The player freedom they are talking about is being able to pick your pronouns. 😂
