  • An analysis of the themes and letitmotifs of the Lord of the Rings - The Complete Recordings; composed, orchestrated and conducted by Howard Shore. The videos stay true to how the tunes are presented in The Complete Recordings, so all scenes with no or altered music are omitted.
IMPORTANT: The featured sample notations are not necessarily identical (in key, form or time signature) to the relevant music in the tracks. They exist to give a visual cue for the themes, not to be taken literally for every iteration of the theme.
Quotes mostly taken from The Annotated Score and The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films by Doug Adams
A big thank you to A Magpie’s Nest, and the mysterious transcriber M.W., without either these videos might never have been made.
I am not affiliated with Middle-earth Enterprises, the Tolkien Estate, New Line Cinema, Warner Brothers, WingNut Films, Doug Adams or Howard Shore.

    ADDENDUM
The song is in Sindarin, and yes, I drew that.
And once again, from the bottom of my heart: Thanks for watching.

Thank you for all you have made for the benefit of edutainment in the subject of thematic score analysis.
I’ve followed you for the last few years and have been hooked to your work ever since I discovered your channel.
One last question for the Q&A: have you considered an extra analysis of the Rarities Archive and its alternate renditions of the LOTR soundtrack we never hear unless we have the CD?
      To quote Frodo: “It’s done…”
Edit: I just realised the Bilbo artwork was yours, great tribute to the legendary actor! He is now in the Grey Havens, at peace with the Elves he always friended as a hobbit…RIP Sir Ian Holm.

You did it, you absolute madman you did it! I don't often leave comments here on youtube but I wanted to tell you congratulations on completing this massive project. I'm so glad I stumbled upon your work when you were halfway through the Two Towers, and having been able to join your audience since. Can't wait to see what you'll do next!

To this day, I still believe and maintain that this is the best thing Howard Shore ever and will ever compose, bar none. His ability to put into melody the pensive, subtle and otherwise undescribable (for me anyways) feelings conveyed by Bilbo's Song (which is one of my favourite poems from Tolkien) is breathtaking.
I always thought there was a similarity in melody between the B phrase of Bilbo's Song and what can be heard when Aragorn talks to Brego at Edoras, to the wonderment of Eowyn. Am I imagining things here ?
And last of all, thank you sooooo much for all the work you put in those videos, it is (and will be for quite a while) much appreciated. Grand work all the way ! ^^

It's been quite a journey for me subtitling all three movies and their songs, and I know it wouldn't have been possible without your work that I know took a thousand times more time and effort to create. If I were to ever upload those subtitles I'll make sure to link your channel and playlists for your very well deserved credit as source material.
    Thank you.

My binge of this series is over. This was my second binge, but I must say, I got a lot more from this one than the previous one. What with asking a lot of questions and making observations and all that. Some of my comments were... let's just say I kinda wanna delete some of them, but overall I'm glad I decided that I was bored enough to watch all this in a binge session again.

Bro I can't believe it's over. It feels a lot like when I realised there wasn't any more left to watch after sitting through the credits of Return of the King as a young boy. That's pretty impressive. Thanks Mono!

Thank you so much for this.
I stumbled across your channel a bit more than a year ago and it's been my favorite youtube series and content ever since.
I didn' comment often, because I don't understand a single thing about music theory, but through your content I learned to put my appeciation for this artform more into words.
So much respect for completing this project and all the time and effort you put into this, and I look forward to whatever you decide to do next.
If you are ever in Berlin, feel invited for an evening in a cozy bar, I owe you.

Mr Monoverantus, thank you, and congratulations! This is a huge accomplishment, and I can’t wait to see where you go next. This channel has shown your dedication and passion for this masterpiece of a trilogy, and I think your series will go down as THE go to LOTR musical/leitmotif analysis, and I know I certainly will be coming back to these videos every rewatch, as I find new details I want to know more about. Thank you :)

Shame this never got a chance to shine in the Hobbit trilogy. Thinking like the scene when Bilbo and Gandalf ride back to the Shire at the end. A real pensive moment, Bilbo reflecting the whole journey he's been on.
"But that's not the way of it with the tales that really mattered, or the ones that stay in the mind. Folk seem to have been just landed in them, usually -- their paths were laid that way, as you put it. But I expect they had lots of chances, like us, of turning back, only they didn't. And if they had, we shouldn't know, because they'd have been forgotten. We hear about those as just went on -- and not all to a good end, mind you; at least not to what folk inside a story and not outside it call a good end. You know, coming home, and finding things all right, though not quite the same -- like old Mr Bilbo. But those aren't always the best tales to hear, though they may be the best tales to get landed in!" Samwise Gamgee (Stairs of Cirith Ungol)
