If I remember correctly, the rabbids franchise wasn't the reason killer freaks was eventually canned. It was actually something a lot more stupid than that.
While killer freaks started exactly as you described it, they eventually realized it was sort of a terrible idea for the rabbids brand and decided to make it into its more original thing. That's why the title changed from "Killer Rabbids" to "Killer Freaks". The freaks were their own characters inspired by the rabbids instead of being the rabbids themselves. That's also why those later designs looked so much different from the rabbids. They were loosely inspired by them but weren't really rabbids anymore.
If my memory serves me right the main reason the actual "Killer Freaks" version of the game was cancelled is because players had to constantly look down to shoot the freaks which proved to not be very fun. That concept was so much interesting than what it eventually became so it's surprising that they didn't just simply scale the freaks to be bigger. They weren't meant to be rabbids anymore so there probably wouldn't had been an issue with that.

ZombiU was still a great game. But, it's quite tragic that they cancelled it for that reason rather than trying to adapt it while maintaining everything else.
Either way, I'm happy with what we got. What I'm not so happy with are the balancing changes they made to it for the multi-platform ports through Zombi. A tense horror experience where resources matter, turned into a mindless slog for the ports. Big shame.

I've always had the theory that Rayman's whole universe is someone's dream. That's why continuity is not a thing in this series, no dream is the exact same twice. I support my theory on Polokus/Bubble Dreamer being a meta-physical representation of the Dreamer himself, that's why everything goes south when he's disturbed, and that's why he needs awakened in Rayman 2 to fix everything.

It's not really a theory, I seem to remember being official that the Glade of Dreams is constantly changing and evolving based on the dreams of Polokus and that's why it's so different from games to games (which is really just a justification as to why it's not consistent from games to games).

    • @Skypatroller_BenCD
      @Skypatroller_BenCD 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Well that theory goes away when you realize that THE WORLD IS REAL, in the lore it is explained that the Lums created Polokus and Polokus was so powerful that he could created dreams and nightmare and Rayman was invocated by the faries because the nightmare where too power to be stopped by Polokus himself. And also there's games that do have connections with the previous although the majority is undirect but they're still linked regardless

Ex-Ubisoft Casablanca here, Senior Game Tester, I remember enjoying testing "Legends", specially the Wii U port, the game was smooth and the touchscreen felt great, I remember also the PS Vita version, I tested it using a Vita Debug Kit that had HDMI built in so I could capture video!
"Legends" had some hardcore levels I remember them very well! We also had a lot of scrapped levels done by my colleagues in Level Design department, some were great but long, some were insanely hard, Montpellier studio had to decide what to keep.
UbiArt Framework is amazing, I remember using it to test some Alpha and Beta levels and to take screenshots too , It was intuitive, ergonomic and beautiful, had its limitations but a very powerful 2D tool, I don't know why Ubisoft didn't use it in more games, the only other game I worked on using UbiArt was "Child of Light", PS Vita port, a fantastic RPG that was a surprise for me! This video is perfect timing considering I just finished Legends yesterday! I do wish you went into more detail with Legends, but I understand that for the most part it is mostly the same as Origins. Very solid video, as always!
I feel there's a slight disconnect between how general audiences and Rayman fans view Legends: Once upon a time I consider Legends the superior game for having more varied content and ideas, and I think that's how critics and players felt too. But being in the Rayman community, Legends is kind of a polarizing title: some fans felt that it was a worthy follow-up to Origins, while others feel it pales in comparison.
Over time I much prefer Origins because I find it to be a more cohesive and consistent experience. For as barebones as Origin's story is, it did have a very solid progression: the levels progress nicely to one another, the worlds transition well to the next, there were phases and points of interests. Legends is just nowhere near as cohesive: the levels feel more compartmentalize, the Painting Gallery distracts more than it does tie things together, there's virtually no story progression as each world is more formulaic, and pacing is often wonky due to how different the scope and purpose of the levels are.
I still think Legends is a darn good game, but Origins just comes together so much better to me in replays. Legends is less a silly adventure across the world like Origins, and more a checklist of fun activities.

Ayoo, we finally have videos on the Ubiart games, this is exciting!
As for my favorite between the 2, I will have to say Legends thanks to it improving the pace of the original game, (mostly) improved bosses, more content, the fun online challenges, and the better completionist system.
Honestly though I think you should have gone on about your opinions on Legends because it would have been really interesting to see why you prefer Origins (Especially considering the opinion is very unpopular). But still this video was awesome overall

I rarely ever hear people declare they enjoy Origins over Legends, but as a long-time fan, I completely agree! Legends didn't have the same effect of immersion that Origins did for me. Although both games experiment with world themes, the levels felt much less fleshed-out in Legends and rather gimmick centric in my opinion. I shared similar thoughts as you on the matter. However, this isn't to say that Legends is a bad game, I believe both are incredible! Different tastes in platformers lead to different opinions I suppose (although I will add the 2 games are a lot more similar than different).
Anyways, I am so happy to see people still playing either game today, I loved your review! I felt you really did your research and spoke out as a fan rather than just a reviewer. Origins is definitely one of my favorite platformers of all time!

I got my Xbox 360 in Christmas of 2011, and Rayman Origins was my first game for the system. Ever since, Rayman has become one of my favorite video game characters, and I consider Rayman Origins to be the game that got me into video games. As for which game I prefer, that's tough to say. It's been a while since I played origins. As for Legends, I do think it's a really good game, but some of the level gimmicks do get a little tiring on replays, and I almost never replay the Murphy levels. I would love to see a new UbiArt Rayman platformer some day, and I don't mean a mobile game.

Fun Fact: The reason why everyone else got limbs in Origins is because Rayman was supposed to be the only one of his kind from now on, but that was thrown out of the window fast when they introduced many other Rays in Legends and Adventures.

Plus the overall game feels more like a cohesive adventure, as opposed to Legends, which has always mostly felt like a string of disconnected levels.
I'd actually really love to see a video dissecting Legends in comparison to Origins, and delving into why it... more or less just doesn't work as well. I'm not saying Legends doesn't feel good to play, more or less it just feels like I'm slowly destroying my index finger by running all the time. In Origins, you had a reason to sometimes slow down, Legends in turn just feels like you're playing an endless runner with a choice of changing your direction. And I guess Ubisoft realised that, since Adventures is exactly that!

What people don't talk about enough is how the Xbox 360 version is truly next generation. Full 1080p, and this art style upscales very nicely to 4k. It's further proof that the 7th gen of consoles was the first "good enough for the next 100 years" console. There are still plenty of games released today that could run on an Xbox 360 and these games were a preview into what the 8th generation of gaming would bring. It's still amazing how lightweight these games are.

I adored both of these games and still do, for entirely different reasons. They are both, to me, like two different dreams. The only thing I have to say specifically about Legends really is that I appreciated so much the incorporation of the rhythm/playable songs at the end of the worlds, and the awesome Easter egg reference to Splinter Cell. 💕 These games are virtually perfect to me, and I long every day for a third one, truly.

My relation with Origins is the exact opposite of Raving Rabbids. When it was announced, I really didn't care. It looked like any other 2D platformers from the time and the episodic format just reminded me of the catastrophe that was Sonic 4. I hated that they were pretending it was a return to source for Rayman because it looked nothing like Rayman 1, gameplay and design-wise. When it was actually released, well... I absolutely loved it. The PC version hadn't been released yet, so I emulated the Wii version at like half speed because my computer was so bad and yet, I've played way too much, before actually buying the Wii version when I had the money. It's an incredibly fun game, especially with friends. Last year, I bought the 3DS version for fun and it's pretty horrible, it looks really blurry and it runs at 30 FPS, but it's still Rayman Origins.
Legends, well... I still haven't played it. I'm one of the few idiots who bought a Wii U at launch, so I was really excited for it... until Ubisoft took the stupid decision to release it like 6 months later, in a period that had a lot of great games releasing and really close to the release of the PS4 / Xbox One. I've played the demo and it felt like more of Origins, I didn't like the artstyle as much and something just felt... off. I have the PS4, Switch and Vita version, I should play it, but I'm just not that interested, which is a shame since I'm sure I would have a good time.
Oh yeah, about Lums, don't worry, even in French, it was always pronounced "Lums" and not "Looms" ingame, don't know where that come from, their name comes from "Lumière" (Light), which is pronounced with a U sound.

I’ve played them both, and I got em both for the Vita as well. However I started with Legends (I wanted Origins but only got Legends instead for a reason I forgot) and I’m far more used to how that game plays. So it’s a bit awkward playing the sequel first and going to Origins next, especially with you need to unlock most of the moves in that one. I’ve yet to beat Origins but I have completed Legends. Like did every level, all bonus music stages, Origins levels, every Teensie, the Lums required for costumes and etc, I platinumed the game and honestly, I’m quite proud of myself given to how hard the challenges/levels are and how grindy it is to get a million Lums. Winning a diamond cup for a daily or weekly challenge was absolutely annoying, especially with the fact not a lot of people were playing it now, thank god for a glitch in a challenge made it more possible.
I plan on finishing Origins too. I managed to get it this year and once I have the time I’ll get that done all the way too.

Thank you for covering these. Even though I bought them each of them new, I still have to look forward to checking them off my backlog someday. You mention the parallax of Rayman Origins. This was used to great effect for 3D on the 3DS. For multiplatform releases, I sometimes had a hard time choosing from the better resolution and colors of the Vita, or the 3D of the 3DS.
I'm a big fan of the mobile games, well the first two. I 100%ed Jungle Run, I'm very nearly done with Fiesta Run after all of these years, and I'll be starting Adventures in earnest right after. No Rayman Mini for me as I don't have any Apple products, so no Apple Arcade.

Dude, Rayman Origins was one of my most played PS3 games back in 2011, I bought it day one and had an absolute blast with it, one of my favourite 2D platformers to this day, the soundtrack slaps, the level design is pretty damn good too and the UbiArt engine makes the game look gorgeous for a Rayman title. I haven't played Legends as much tho so I'm still a bit mixed on a few things, but both games are great, just wish Ubisoft would finally revive the limbless hero for a brand new game or maybe a remake of Rayman 2 etc.

I kinda view Origins as the base game and Legends as "dlc". Legends doesn't really have any structure to it as each world is self contained and the game doesn't really have story or ending. It's just really fun levels. I think as a whole Origins is better as it has a story and a sense of adventure and progress as your playing through the game. Legends on the other hand is just really fun levels and tries to be more experimental.

  • @youalreadyknowwhoitis3544
    @youalreadyknowwhoitis3544 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Honestly, I preferred Rayman Origins. I love Legends, but Origins is definitely the more challenging and interesting of the two. Also, Rayman Legends feels like it has very little content The main adventure is pretty short, only being about 2-3 hours long as opposed to Origins being about 5-6 hours.
To be fair, the chase levels were pretty fun and the musical levels are absolutely genius, but 90% of the levels are either painfully easy or really slow with the Murphy levels.
Also, as for there being thousands of Lums in Rayman Origins/Legends (and Rayman Raving Rabbids DS), my headcanon is that the Lums from Rayman 2 aren't the same type as the ones in the UbiArt. In Rayman Origins, they're referred to as just Lums despite specifically being called Yellow Lums in Rayman 2.

Legends is still fantastic but I felt some of the gimmick stuff was a little long in the tooth and the game just didn't hit me in the same way. I will say that the music levels in Legends are so so fun and are always a hoot! Interesting you mostly only played these games co-op, I've mostly played them single player aside from the early parts of Legends on the Wii U version since it had the gamepad stuff.

I love the characters, the art, and even some of the music, but I'd be hard-pressed to say I like playing any of the games, and I wish that wasn't the case more than you'd imagine. Visually, Rayman 1 is my favourite for sure, quite an inspiration of mine even, but the only Rayman game I've ever gotten into the gameplay of (I'm slightly ashamed to admit) was the 'Rayman Run' mobile series, and yet trying both these games didn't give me the same sense of what I liked in those games.

I think if I had to chose one of the two games.... It's really hard ^^'.
Progression wise, I prefer Origins, a world map is way more immersive than the gallery hub world they did and, while there are nearly no stories, I do like there were some set pieces to make the whole thing cohesive like, how we save the nymphs to met back with them atop the mountain and the magician's reveal.
Gameplay wise it's very similar but Legends has too much gimmiks, especially the touch controls ones. I'm really not found of the murphy levels as Globox's IA can be really unresponsive.
... However, Legends also feels like a more complet packages as most of it's new levels are really good, there are way more stuff to do AND you can unlock a lot of Origins's levels to playthrough. Also, the upgrade on the Ubi Art is impressive so it's like "Why pick Origins when you can have the same content and even more with Legends?"

As a long time Rayman fan, playing from ps1 all the way up to now, I think Rayman Origins is a better game thematically and in context to Rayman's legacy as a character.
The overall excitement I felt when I saw that initial trailer for origins knowing the series was going back to its roots and "rebooting" is something i wont forget. Rayman was back.
The art direction, aesthetic, and energy felt much more in tune to Rayman 1, which at the time of Origins release was somewhat overshadowed by its 3D sequals. outside of the occasional "Rayman 1 is hard!" post or video.
Legends felt like it was more or less an expansion on Rayman origins, and while technically its the superior game. I think it lost touch some with the overall world Rayman has had attached to him. It seemed disjointed thematically while being very polished gameplay wise. Origins felt like a return to form, while legends felt like a collection of expansion worlds.
This all being said, At the time I felt a return to 2D was what Rayman needed. Now I feel that a polished 3D Rayman is waaay overdue. I thought for sure that Origins would serve as a starting point for a new series of Rayman games, and that was never the case.
