    I see many people enraptured by the rarity of a pigment - regardless of what they'll do with it (or more importantly, what they can do with it!). Sometimes if feels like the watercolour world is turning into a fashion like industry, with must-have brushes, must-have palettes and accessories...

      In the end, right now I'm using at least three art supplies I've discovered mostly through TH-cam (including Lindsey), and that I really like. Inexpensive, good quality and versatile.
      And I'm grateful Teoh reviewed this pigment, it is an interesting story. He says it himself, he doesn't think it's an irreplaceable pigment. Yet some in the replies find it irresistible. My comment had more to do with what companies put on the market, not TH-camrs reviewing products.

      @@tv-bb6vg Yeah.. well - companies like this one are tiny.. so they can try and push this stuff out there and if folks buy it for outrageous prices - good for them. I just laugh when I see 5 or 6 youtube channel folks all "review" the same product within days of each other... the marketing at the art companies in overdrive to send out these free supplies for publicity... and then folks just buy them. I haven't bought a new supply in the past 2 years... and happily have been learning to use what I have... it is a blessing for sure!!

      Absolutely, art supplies, and watercolors in particular, have turned into a fashion thing, with people buying supplies just to be able to say that they have them.
      This obsession with brands, with particular sets, with lightfastness even when one is only a hobbyist, insisting on artist grade products for the use in coloring books or for painting along to tutorials - I have only seen this in the last few years.
      I remember when doing art mostly meant that you have your supplies by whatever brand it is that is being sold where you live, and then you work with those. And if you notice that you are needing something in specific, then you'll go and buy that. This also eventually resulted in having art supply collections, but very different ones, as they were functional collections, not collections for show purposes of which most pieces will not truly be used.
      Now I have to admit that since the pandemic started, I have also fallen into this buying trap, HEAVILY. After several decades of being happy having just what I need to work, I also started wanting this and that and everything - A direct result of having all this time and watching a ton of art videos on here. But it's neither really satisfying, nor does it, in any way, make me more creative or better at what I do. Actually the opposite is the case, and I have started to feel overwhelmed many times.
      The best way to work really is to use what one has, and to limit new additions to what one actually needs.

    One important thing to keep in mind if you're going to get a pan of YInMn blue is that it will eventually harden up to the point where you can barely get any color on it. Oto Kano has done a review on Kremer's YInMin and her pan was almost unusable after about 4 months. So if you buy it, don't treat it like gold and make sure to use it up! :)

    While I agree with the overall sentiment in the comments that this pigment is probably not worth adding to your collection unless one is really in to the novelty of it as a new pigment (at least at it’s current price), I feel like some context regarding this pigment is missing from both the video and the comments.
    For reference, I’ve been following news regarding this pigment for a few years and my understanding is that the price is expected to drop. Only recently did it start being available for use in commercially produced paints and the current limited supply is driving up the prices. Also, the lab that discovered this pigment did so by accident. The lab was not trying to create a super unique blue pigment. Additionally, this pigment might actually be more valuable in industry than in art because part of what makes it unique is how it reflects and absorbs light outside of the range that human eyes see.
    I’ll be curious to see more paints with this pigment as it becomes more commercially available and the price drops because the same pigment can look a little different when processed in different ways.

    I'm looking at the comments here and I'm laughing in agreement. It's an interesting story and a very nice colour, but as a $60 novelty replacement for Ultramarine or Cobalt? Nah. I'm grateful to early adopters and reviewers like you, for giving us a look, but it'd have to become a lot more mainstream and mass-produced - with the effect that'd have on the price - before I'd think about buying it. I think the story of this is super interesting, the fact that it's an inorganic blue that's been discovered by a scientist, whoa! But I think since the colour is so similar to colours that are cheaper, it's hard to justify having this blue unless you are just fascinated by pigments. The only reason I can imagine that you'd want an inorganic blue is to avoid heavy metal pigments like cobalt. But I think manganese oxide is still toxic (not sure, I know some manganese pigments are), so who knows! Exciting, though!

    • @LeesChannel
      @LeesChannel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      If things were reversed and he discovered Ultramarine Blue, the deepest, most vibrant true blue in existence and all we had was Ynmin Blue, I'd say it's worth it. But that's not the case, and not only do we have Ultramarine Blue for super cheap (it used to be more than gold!) we also have cobalt pigments that match its hue and granulation and exceed its saturation and depth. And Ultramarine and cobalt blues are lightfast, so it's not like that's a concern either. Ynmin blue really doesn't have a reason to exist.

    • @mangomontero
      @mangomontero 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@LeesChannel I don't know. While I agree with you, I would have specified that Yinmin doesn't really have a reason to exist as commercially available paint right now.
      However, the discovery of the pigment is (aside from exciting) an open door for other possibilities. That is pretty cool and I am very happy it exists. Even if for us right now it is concretely nothing more than a super expensive novelty or status item.

      No paint is really toxic. Well except lead paint. But others aren't. The toxicity comes in making it. The chemicals that go airborne not the paint itself. Take cadmium paints for example. A 2 year old would have to eat 10 thousand tubes in one sitting to even reach toxic levels. The liver produces enzymes to filter these things from our body. To be quite honest about it, all this toxic stuff is just marketing.

    • @LeesChannel
      @LeesChannel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phillipstroll7385 Okay buddy, let's see you eat 10 tubes of cadmium paint a day for 10 consecutive days and document it on video. That's only 1 100th of what you said would be harmful to a 2 year old, spread over 10 times as many days, should be no problem right? Feel free to substitute for mercury-based Vermillion or arsenic based Emerald Green, I'm sure your enzymes will protect you, it's all just marketing. Hey, I hear a scientist say that Roundup was no more harmful than a glass of water, why not wash down those tubes of paint with a tumbler of Roundup to really put all these toxicity myths to rest?

    • @phillipstroll7385
      @phillipstroll7385 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LeesChannel you don't have to see it numb nut. It's called math and science. I guess you went to school in Oregon huh. No one actually had to eat paint to know what levels are in them or how many it'll take before the live can no longer detoxify. Also, the whole point was a toddler couldn't eat that much paint. No one could. The binders would make a person blow chunks before they could ever ingest that much. But ya know, hey, what's math good for anyway right..

The pricing for the set was in line with the pricing of all the other sets and not bumped up on account of this color being included. If the price of the set were different because of this half pan I probably would have passed, as getting it doesn't really mean much to me. And the building looks great with the blue and the red. Very very nice painting. I love it! The color separation of the red and blue within the paper on the building looks awesome and I absolutely love the color the tower turned out to be. You have an eye for such wonderful color mixing. I enjoy watching you paint so much! I will have to simply watch you paint with paints I could never afford. When you said to let you know if we think it's worth the price, I would have to say no. @@carolchapel779 You mean comments on YT? Those are not moderated. But comments on my blog are screened. I did not see your comment on my blog though. Unfortunately sometimes my blog has problems handling comments. Comments may be lost or a single comment may duplicate a few times.

      @@teohyc No, I tried to post here. Not terribly important. I happen to live in the same town as OSU and I attended a talk that Mas Subramanian (sp?) gave shortly after this discovery. He offered to give a small amount of the pigment. So I got some and mixed it with etching ink extender and printed a small drypoint of a Camas flower. That flower grows here and is blue and contains his name Mas. And yes the pigment is very expensive for fine art uses. I believe there are industrial uses for it.

    just use ultramarine blue (PB29)... far more cheaper.... I'm staying away from YinMn Blue until it became series 1 price.

    This extremely expensive blue doesn’t look any different to my Cotman or Van Gogh ultramarine blue.

  • @graphosxp

    This is costly because it is a patented discovery. If it was not for the U.S. patent you would find it for maybe a 1/3 of the going rate. Good luck to Oregon State University in stopping Chinese chemist from producing a bootleg version for their own artist community!

    Yeah, that's gonna be a big nope for me. I'm quite happy with a much more affordable twin. Seriously! The difference between the colors is so minimal it just isn't worth the money UNLESS you are a serious collector of paints. If that is the case then absolutely! Jump on that little gem.

    Well, this is underwhelming for the price. Probably a dead born color. The goal of discovering new colors is either superiority or being cheaper. It's neither.

    Well if she gave it to you for free she doesn't need me to buy it. Evidently she can afford to give it away. I'll stick with French ultra marine. Or I'll buy it from someone whom can't afford to give it away to youtubers soon could afford to buy it.
    Besides, soon enough it will be in every palette sold
