My sincere apologies for mispronouncing Giulio Giannini E Figlio (I said "El" Figlio). Also, I was asked whether the paints still smell like rosemary after the painting dried... and the answer is yes. Very subtle, but definitely there... and it's marvelous! Cheers! ~ Mark_
Spent my last 2 years slowly growing my A. Gallo paints. Absolutely love these! These are very natural, and well made. Yes, they are expensive, but worth it....

€345, Holy Cow! I’m definitely going to have to live my best watercolour life through you, those paints are so expensive. Lol 😄 I do like that they sell the paint pans individually, I’ll perhaps buy a couple from them when they are back in stock.
Yes, I understand the price can be daunting. As I said to a friend who is a fashion designer, you can buy clothing at Wal*Mart for cheap, but don't expect them to be made well, comfortable, or last very long without discoloring, fading, or falling apart; however, if you buy clothing by a custom tailor, they will be expensive - yet, they will last a long time, be extremely comfortable, and won't like fade, discolor, or fall apart. These A. Gallo paints are like buying a full suit from a custom tailor. For me, they are worth the price on many levels. But again, I understand that daunting price, which is why I'm happy that A. Gallo sells individual pans and smaller sets. They really have it together! Cheers Ruby Buttons and thank you for taking your time to watch and leave your feedback. I held off buying a set because of the price. Now, I only wish I hadn't waited. lol!

Beautiful watercolours! Making my own handmade watercolour I can tell these are packed with pigment. I really appreciate it when companies don’t use fillers to extend the watercolour in volume and compromise on the quality. In these paints it looks like all they use is good quality pigments, gum arabic, honey and herb oil. This is why they are so pigmented! Also I have been thinking of removing those trays from my large metal tins but you finally inspired me! :) they just get in the way of painting and I also prefer using a porcelain dish instead. 👍🏼👍🏼
I KNEW you’d love them!! So glad you invested & that you’ve enjoyed them so far. I fell in love with their story before buying... and then fell in love with the paints from the first brushstroke. 💕
Too funny, Becky Tregear Art! "Mmmm.... honey!" I agree about that Pietra Rosa. I was so disappointed by Daniel Smith's Potter's Pink, that I was dying to try the A. Gallo version and it's exactly what I wanted Daniel Smith's to be (but wasn't). That Alina Gallo chose to mix the Potter's Pink pigment with others to create a deeper, more muted version is just fabulous. To use the Potter's Pink along with Pietra Rosa will likely produce wonderful results! Thank you for checking this one out! ~ Mark
This brand is insanely prised. People be mesmerized by the handmade package and the colours being handmade (most watercolours are). And artists raving about them. The allure is in the nice packages and the "scarcity" of the products. They sure know how to appear luxerius and make people go crazy about buying their products.
I appreciate your point of view, and I was skeptical at first, until enough artists I respect shared their impressions. So, once I made the leap, I had no regrets. These paints are very unique and very special. Are they expensive? Yes. But, I was clear on that in the video. Are they for everyone? No, because not everyone will appreciate the unique quality of these paints, especially if they've been using Cotman or Reeves. For people who love Sennelier or M. Graham, there will be a familiarity. For people who are willing to spend their money on a luxury item, it's a win. I'd rather spend my money on a product that delivers, hand-over-fist, than shell out a fraction of the cost for a product dud. That's my opinion, and I don't believe they are trying to create any false allure - I truly believe the hype is because they are just that good AND the packaging is so freaking awesome. People love their BMWs, Teslas, and Porsches, don't they? Of course, I drive a Nissan. lol!! Thanks for your feedback. I do appreciate it.
I've been using Alina's paints for about 3 years now, and truly enjoy her colors. She is such a dream to work with too...customer service is just so exceptional. Absolutely on a wish list. Way out of my budget. I wish I knew of these when I was over in Italy years ago! wow the most beautiful watercolors Ive ever seen. Beautiful. Thanks for the review...
Hullo Mark, very well done review! I have been watching handmade paints make a resurgence and I must say that many are disappointing. I also have friends who tried these A.Gallo paints and they kept raving about how wonderful they are! I could not find a set that appealed to me, so I contacted them through e-mail and I substituted a couple of colors and added two more for a set of 14 half pans. They easily fit in their 12 pan metal palette. They are simply the best handmade paints I have used in over 40 years! I am enjoying them for special jobs or gifts. I am still a stalwart fan of DaVinci Paints of California and I am over the moon for their new Seaglass paint! I am a mixer from my beginner origins but some colors are so difficult to mix that sometimes your time is more important, so I get those custom colors for ease of painting. I hope you create more paintings and videos for these paints! I have enjoyed them myself and wish this company only the very best! They are amazing at every aspect of the watercolor creation process! Thank you for sharing your opinions and promoting these incredibly wonderful paints!
Hi Mark, that was such a joy to watch this. Thanks for mentioning me, didn't expect it and feel very honoured now. Throughout the video and even before in the super slow unboxing of this set, I felt how much you enjoyed them. And Alina Gallo does such an amazing job on the quality of paints, you can feel how much love and passion she puts into the creation of them, how important good quality is. The communication with them is top notch, very friendly, I got all my questions answered, it was just amazing. When I ordered, I got this rounded wooden palette (should finally make a video on it :D). It was sold out for months, but I just had to have it and it's 100% worth it. High quality paints, awesome palette and it came with Tintoretto travel brushes even! (Sorry for brabbling, good supplies make me so excited and I'm glad you get to use them now too!) Btw. isn't the Sap Green just gorgeous? With this set and the Fabriano papers, it seems like you have a whole italian art supply series now. :D I hope to see more of these in use! :D Have a wonderful day and thank you so much for this video!!!
Thank you so much, my friend. Happy to mention you because you are an inspiring spirit in my creative journey and your positive, caring attitude reflects in the people you have connected with. I'm thrilled you enjoyed these paints, too, and it was you, Nan and Nora who finally got me to go toward them. Thank you for that! Stay well!
The green umber and slate gray look super unique! As always, a most excellent video/presentation. I am hearing about this company for the 1st time today, thank you for all the great information about them
I'm pretty happy with the selection I got in my Schmincke's. I decided on them myself and didn't get a pre-selected set - which probably means I'll have some that I don't really need. But hey, never know 'til you tried yourself ^^' I love your swatches of these, they look glorious 🥰 Oh, they would surely smell delicious with all that honey and rosemary in 😋 And I love handcrafted stuff, so I'm totally here for that gorgeous packaging and other added stuff 🥰
If you push the two tabs on either side of your palette insert outward a little it will help keep it in place and stop any rattling. I forget who mentioned this otherwise I would credit them, I hated that the inserts shift and were a little unstable, as I love this style of palette. Haven’t yet taken of the mixing flap of any of mine, most of which are the littlest version, but for these big tins it would definitely be worth doing they really use up desk real estate! I doubt I will ever buy any of these paints, not because I don’t want to, but because there is no way I could justify it having a very lovely set of a different Italian company with historic and lovely colours. Ah, watercolour. A very addictive interest!
Your channel just popped up and I just watched your video. I also watch Irit landgraf from Austria who mentioned A Gallo in one of her videos. I just went to A Gallo website. They seem to be sold out of everything but will be restocking. Expensive so I would probably consider a smaller set. The quality of everything looks amazing. I’ll have to check out your other videos.
Thank you for checking this one out, Bonnie Shapiro! Yes, the A Gallo sets are a luxury purchase, for sure. They are wonderful to work with, but with price being a major factor, they really aren't for everyone. I've recommended folks explore Sennelier paints, from France, which are also honey-based, or one of my favorites, M. Graham from the USA. For me, A Gallo was a worthwhile product to explore. I don't use them everyday, as I don't want to exhaust what I have. So, when I do use them, it's when I'm really looking to spend some quality, personal creative time. Again, thanks for your time on the channel and I really appreciate your feedback! Hoping you are well! ~ Mark
Ohhhhh wow!! I knew those paints were gonna be fantastic but they really stand out more when used in a picture more!! I'm really impressed!! 😍 I'm so afraid to go see how much they cost but with the denseness of the pans, you really get quite alot of paint which means long use, so it's gotta be worth the price! Thanks for sharing, Mark! Congrats on your purchase!! 😁👍
These are so lush and splurge-worthy. You are having such a good time! When somebody asks me what I want for art supplies for my birthday, I'm going to toss out "Oh, a set of A. Gallo from Italy." Regardless of my skill level, they'll be impressed that I didn't mumble my answer or ask for some kid-stuff. (Just kidding.) Somebody had to do a thorough vid, I'm glad it was you. Thanks so much.
Great video! I’m super picky about brands and not very adventurous about adding more than the handful I use but I will have to try one of these boxes at some point. Color looks great!
Just found your channel, loved this review. My A. Gallo's are in the mail from Jackson's, I can hardly wait. But I must say as much as I love the review I absolutely love your drawing!! How can I get a copy, it brought back warm memories of many things.
Greetings Dee-Ellen Cook and thank you for taking your time to watch, but even more so for your wonderful, kind comment. The A. Gallo paints are definitely something I choose to work with very carefully, as they are my "special" set of paints that I cherish dearly. Are they the best paints I've ever owned? Not necessarily. I tend to favor other brands for my professional work because I don't have such an emotional connection to them like I do with the A. Gallo paints. I mean, when I work with them and catch that scent of rosemary oil... oh my! Just wonderful! As for the painting, I am so grateful for your thoughts. I don't usually sell my artwork. If you wish to email me, I might be able to send you something. Just let me know. Thank you again and I hope you enjoy those paints as much as I do! Cheers! ~ Mark
I’ve just caved in and bought the set of the 6 earth colours. I can’t really afford them but after seeing your video I just had to try them. Wish I could have run to the little wooden set. It will be interesting to compare them to the Mijello Gold ones which also have honey in them. But these along with the Rosemary oil should be heaven. What is the drying time like in the pans after use? The Mijello ones can take days even in our British climate.
Wonderful! I have been watching these paints for a while, but they are out of my budget at the moment and besides having already lots of art supplies I don't paint as much to justify this purchase.
Are they better than Daniel Smith or similar quality? I ask because they would cost me three times as much as DS because of Brexit, but I do love some of their colours.
Thanks for the video. I actually rip out the metal strips that hold the paint and it’s perfectly fine. That way you can still use the mixing palette underneath. I don’t like those little metal lips either. 👍🏻 Also another great handmade paint is made in Canada it’s called Stoneground Paint Co, I love M Graham and I find them very comparable😊
I love A Gallo watercolors omgoodness working my way towards a full set. But have you also tried the Essee Color that's based in Spain. They also hand mix and pour and wrap their paints.
I got the Natural palette - Although beautiful, I would recommend getting the Classic 24 instead. Although the Natural pallete is beautiful, they are not vibrant like the Classic. Overall I really am enjoying these paints - I too waited years to get them. I have been making my own watercolors for almost a year now. Something about using a Muller and knowing what is in your paints. (One of the reasons, I don't get the faux outrage over Daniel Smith's Prima Tex line)
Have you tried putting the pallet vertically, instead of horizontally? If yes, did that help with the metal not getting in the way of your paintbrushes’ farrels?
Alina Gallo's work is amazing, especially her smaller gouache paintings. Given that she mostly paints with gouache (as do I) it's disappointing that they don't make a line of gouache paints. The watercolours are gorgeous, but it's really not my medium so I would have a hard time justifying the expense. However, if I were a watercolourist, I'd be jumping at these.
I agree. Perhaps that's in the works for them? There's a much bigger community of watercolor painters out there, and since gouache is merely opaque watercolor, it could be a possible venture for them once they are established as a serious contender in that larger watercolor market. At least, I like to think that's a possibility! lol! Cheers!
Well, if I ever win the lottery.... [wry smile] They do look gorgeous, though. FYI, "e figlio" in Italian means "and son." So in English it's "Giulio Giannini and son." Even though a daughter took over recently, I'm sure they got their business license with "and son" some time ago. :)
Hi Adrianna Marszal! Thank you for taking the time to watch this one and for leaving a question. If I'm using a dip pen, I usually use it with Dr. Ph Martin ink, knowing it will resist water. But in the video, I believe I used either Sakura Micron pens or Copic Multiliners. Reasonable pricing and always great results when painting over. Hoping you are well! ~ Mark
Way out of my league but "absolutely fabulous"! USA here-what is this putty you use to attach your half pans? I need some. Looks to work much better than magnets.
Hello Mark! Are you still satisfied with the A. Gallo paints after almost a year of having/using them? If not as much, what is/are your favorite brand(s) of watercolor? I'm a beginner but want to use high quality materials :)
Hi Adrianna Marszal! Thank you for posting and for your thoughtful question. I do still enjoy the Gallo paints and use them primarily for personal work, not professional. I guess because I feel a more of an intimate connection to them and don't want to waste them on test runs and dummies. Also, I don't travel with them, so like my M. Grahams and Senneliers (both also made with honey and don't travel well), they stay right here in my studio. However, I have a travel set made up of mostly Daniel Smith and Schmincke, with a couple of Windsor & Newton pans in there, too. That is my go-to set when I'm working on-site, traveling, or even in my home, outside my studio. I have enough tubes to refill when needed, so I'm not worried about wasting and feel like I can do tests and practice palettes, as opposed to the Gallo. If I were to advise a student, I might recommend getting a few tubes of Daniel Smith or Schmincke, some empty pans, and build a small set of maybe 6-12 colors. Explore mixing colors and work with a smaller set before indulging into a larger set. The tactile experience of filling pans and creating a personal set is truly one of the most satisfying processes I enjoy. I hope this was helpful! Stay well and again thank you! Best wishes! ~ Mark

Do you get this nice packaging and sample paper because you're an influencer? I notice some companies only pay this much attention to you guys but ordinary customers, not so much.
Thank you for the tip, Lynette Brown, but it was the biggest problem with this palette that I had. It literally made me crazy. So, I decided to yank all the pans out and create a set like my others, where the pans are fixed. My life with A. Gallo is just sheer joy now! lol!! Thank you again! ~ Mark

I love your swatches of these, they look glorious 🥰 Oh, they would surely smell delicious with all that honey and rosemary in 😋 And I love handcrafted stuff, so I'm totally here for that gorgeous packaging and other added stuff 🥰
I have not tried them! Will definitely have a look! Thank you, 2virginia5!! :)
Oh Mark! These are gorgeous! My wallet is screaming! 😆
At least, I like to think that's a possibility! lol! Cheers!
They better be good for $500!!!!! YIKES!!!! AND... the entire site is SOLD OUT!
Thanks man!
M.D. Campbell, what pen do you use for contours so that watercolors work so well on it, like in the video?
Hi Adrianna Marszal! Thank you for taking the time to watch this one and for leaving a question. If I'm using a dip pen, I usually use it with Dr. Ph Martin ink, knowing it will resist water. But in the video, I believe I used either Sakura Micron pens or Copic Multiliners. Reasonable pricing and always great results when painting over. Hoping you are well! ~ Mark
@@MDCampbell Thanks for your answer, Mark! :)
I use the bottom tray of the metal tins to squeeze more paint in those little holes.
Way out of my league but "absolutely fabulous"! USA here-what is this putty you use to attach your half pans? I need some. Looks to work much better than magnets.
Looks like the white version of Blu-tack
I guuuuess I need more paints 😂🙌🏼
Are these paints similar to Maimeri Blu ?
~ Mark
@@MDCampbell Thanks so much for a prompt reply, Mark! It's good to hear that the A. Gallo paints still have your enthusiasm. I might consider them one day when I advance my skills :) Thanks for the advice too!
Did they even write the pigment number on each pan so you didn't need to do it yourself? Wow... they are just beautiful.
I'm curious if you have ever tried artistic isles paints? If so, what's your opinion on them? 😊
Ha, the first thing I do with a new tray is take off that front mixing area. Because for one reason it gets in the way trying to have multiple trays set together on the table.
So nice colours can this colours ordered to India 🙏🙏
To make her website link work you gotta add the www in from of the address. When it goes blue you’ll know it’s working. Great looking paints. Yum.
Do you get this nice packaging and sample paper because you're an influencer? I notice some companies only pay this much attention to you guys but ordinary customers, not so much.
If you need to pick up a lot of pigment from the bottom 2 rows couldn't you just turn your pallette a bit?
Thank you for the tip, Lynette Brown, but it was the biggest problem with this palette that I had. It literally made me crazy. So, I decided to yank all the pans out and create a set like my others, where the pans are fixed. My life with A. Gallo is just sheer joy now! lol!! Thank you again! ~ Mark
Where do you purchase their paints?
Okay my reply got deleted because I had added a link to the website that's exactly the same as in the description. So I have to retype this again. SIGH. Anyway, check the description of this video, you'll see a link to the website. She is going to restock again on April 25 so you can get a set then :)
@@SunTurtle thank you for responding to this question. I don't know why your first reply was deleted? That was not me. Still, I appreciate you helping the other viewer. Very nice of you! Cheers! :)
@@MDCampbell I understand, I assumed it to be TH-cam doing an auto-delete of posts with links (that happens sometimes, I think it's a setting that each channel can choose to allow links or not in comments with the default being that they're not. Anti-spam measures, I guess :D )
@@SunTurtle I'll definitely look into that. I had no idea! Thank you!!!
$620 Australian dollars for a 48 set, prior to shipping cost. Ridiculous. Definitely a lot of hype.
I don’t think it’s hype. It takes a lot of planning and man power to make a watercolour product like that by hand and from the best pigments and ingredients. They are clearly marketed to pro-artists though rather than the average hobby artist, I know I can’t justify buying them just to mess around with. Lol
what is the price of this set?
€345! Which is roughly $415 US. Lol
@@rubybuttons668 They have 5% discount this month. Anything helps. 😉
@@rubybuttons668 WOW!!! for a second there I thought i had read that wrong!!! it's a beautiful set, but I could never justify paying that much for a set.
Here's an idea. When that top tab gets in your way, jus turn the tin around. problem solved.
Is shipping included?
Asking for a friend 😂
No, there is a shipping cost. Something to consider with regard to where you live.
@@MDCampbell Thanks Mark. Keep posting more reviews. Stay safe and have a wonderful weekend.
Namaste 🙏🙏
So turn the tin around, mark, when you’re using the bottom paints if the metal tab is bothering you. Is and our first world problems. Good video with good info just the same.
Great review…but please it’s pronounced feelio, not fig-lee-o. Even that is not quite right but a better approximation. On my wish list now.
All gone.
It’s a quill not a mop
Tomato potato.
all sold out
Yeah, you need to sign up for A Gallo's newsletter. That's where she notifies people when the paints will be available -- they're limited in quantity so gotta be quick before they sell out. It's a bummer but I get it, they're handmade so she can't just crank out a ton of them even with her apprentices and assistants. I'm not yet ready to get a set but I want them so much! :D
Oh I just saw, at the top of the shop, she says she's restocking on April 25 at a certain time, so you can get them then :)
@@SunTurtle if I win a million dollars sure LOL
@@puffyjo I know, those prices are quite scary :D
