"You have to earn it" That might be one of the best descriptions of PNW rainforest hunting I've heard. With the amount of work involved... it's something you definitely earn.
Wow! Just watched this film, and words don't do it justice! This makes me want to go there, even if just to see this incredible place and it's deer, and finally a wildlife biologist I can relate to! Bravo!
I was raised in Juneau and cut my hunting teeth chasing Sitka Blacktail and have had the incredible opportunity to hunt Whitetail and Mule Deer and the humble Sitka is #1 in my experience. A true physical and mental challenge and I’ll take it over Minnesota corn feed Whitetail any day........ Sitka Blacktail is the best of the best for me!!!!
Just returned today from my first trip to south east Alaska. I just finished telling my wife that its hard to capture the beauty there. You did an amazing job at it. Thank you guys for the top notch content. This was moving.
I've personally met Jim "The Wizard" Baichtal. You will not find a man who cares more dearly about Southeast Alaska than that wonderful, brilliant man.
Breathtaking scenery. Amazing adventure. Wonderful story. Challenging hunt. Stunning bucks. Detailed perspective. What else could we who may never experience a Sitka Blacktail deer hunt ask for?! The group of hunters that made this film of such a wonderful place have truly inspired me and I am sure many others to one day arrive to hunt that great deer! Thank you for sharing this magical film.
Yes!!! I have been waiting for this film ever since the podcast episode! I am still crying a bit over a place like that, a truly GOOD place, still existing. Thank you for doing what y'all do
Jim has such a passion for those deer and the country they live in. Around 9 mins in, that is a real 'grunt' but so worth it. As a non res alien hunter I could never afford to hunt there, but you brought the experience to me, it must be getting boring hearing this Randy and crew, but, best film yet:)
Next level cinematography with a great focus on the ecology and conservation that goes into preserving this incredible landscape, very impressed with this beautiful showcase of such a great natural space and species!
Well done Randy! My most memorable hunt was hunting Sitka Blacktails on Kodiak Island. They are amazing, beautiful deer and the best tasting wild game I have ever had. They, like all of our wild animals, are a treasure that most be treated as such.
Wow! What an awesome video! There is no place more amazing than SE Alaska and you guys captured it beautifully. Thanks for all that you do! And it was great to see Tyler back.
He is definitely one of a kind, but I'm also now working with some great volunteers with BC Wildlife Federation on a mule deer project, same attitude of love and respect for the animals : )
Thank you for telling this story of how important habitat is to our wildlife and how important our wildlife is to the habitat and how important hunters is to both. It was great to see hunter know so much and a biologist wanting to know more about the hunter.
Incredible footage, absolutely outstanding landscape! What an amazing job your group did giving us an in depth look into the lives of such an little known deer species. They are truly a resilient animal to live and thrive in such an environment. Wonderful presentation! Thank You for sharing this.....
Man, awesome video, I love how you guys put it together hopefully you guys go back up there and make more videos for the channel of Sitka blacktail. I'm from Washington State and sitka blacktails hold near and dear to my heart, even know I hunt Colombian blacktails here in Washington state. Sitka blacktails is one of my bucket list deers to shoot one of these days. Love your guys content keep up the awesome work.
Was really fun to watch this at the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Rendezvous in Boise with Randy Newberg and Dr. Gilbert. The Q&A afterwards was very rich and informative. There’s so much more to the story - forestry practices, weather and climate, as well as a general lack of data on Sitka blacktails, so be sure to visit sitkablacktail.org if you’re interested in learning more.
What an amazing video. My jaw is still laying on the floor here somewhere...I should pick it up eventually. Amazing country, amazing animals, and some great people. That old Hawken is a character unto itself. Its owner a treasure. Questions for your Biologist: I have heard Columbia Blacktail are a hybrid of Mule Deer and Columbia Whitetail. When Lewis and Clark whined and complained at Fort Clatsop about the weather, they mostly saw Columbia Whitetail from what I can gather. So Sitka's.....where are the progenitor species? Where did they come from? Do they share some common DNA with our more Southern species? Are they really a Blacktail like my Columbia's, or are they a unique species? Are they Columbia that migrated North and were isolated? Inquiring minds want to know...assuming anyone does at all. That quote from Mr. Roosevelt at the end? I loved it. He absolutely is a hero of mine.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. FINE Ambassadorship. SE Alaska, and a sunny day? GET, while the getting is GOOD. The view is breath takingly beautiful, and such a rare treat. I lived in Juneau for a year and a half. It was a treat to drink coffee at the kitchen table and watch the mist ascend Mt. Juneau in the morning. The sun comes out, everyone plays hookey from work and white legs are everywhere.
@@davidsamollow I thought it had to be. There is no other sound like that. Did not want to make an assumption since I have never been to Alaska. Had no idea they got up to that part of the world.
I didn't think I would be interested, but that scenery and the story of Sophie's progression from scientist to hunter is just awesome.
Just rewatched this again since it first came out. Can we get an updare or another movie pls and longer. Great job everyone!

Evolution of a scientist into a hunter--love that! Nice film.

The group of hunters that made this film of such a wonderful place have truly inspired me and I am sure many others to one day arrive to hunt that great deer! Thank you for sharing this magical film.
Beautiful perspectives. I love that there are people in this world that are passionate about things that most don’t even know exist.
Jim and randy are my favorite hunters. Great ethics and skill.
This was the best representation of my home I’ve seen yet. Life is definitely earned here. But worth it. Great video randy.

Great message and amazing footage. You really capture the essence of Southeast Alaska and why those little deer are so much fun to hunt.
Amazing footage. I love the way you captured the art of hunting. Hard work provides food. Thank you for showing exactly how hard it is and rewarding!

Sandhill Cranes. They live in our alpine meadows during the spring and summer
