Very happy TH-cam algorithm suggested your this video! I’m still practicing beauty retouching with both frequency separation and dodge and burn. At the moment i’m still fumbling around and it takes me a good 2hrs retouching a single photo. I appreciate creators like you for putting out great content to learn from! Cheers!
Thank you soo much for your comment. When I started it took me forever to learn Dodge and Burn and a good two years to be better at frequency Separation. So take your time and you'll be amazing at it! Thank you.
Correct me if I'm wrong.... Frequency Separation when you're in a limited time and it's a more face portrait with noticable skin textures? Dodge and Burn is when you have a lot of time, it's a face and Body portrait and less skin texture to work on to look realistic? But sometimes you could do both?
Yeah. don't they do completely different things. Like, frequency separation helps to smooth out colours without losing texture whereas dodge and burn affects the lighting.
Both are great retouching techniques however, FS is that much more versatile. It corrects imperfections if properly done and if the image being worked on has good details (highlights and shadows) you may not need D&B. As good as D&B is, it's a technique that's most suited to detailing, facial contouring etc but it will never remove the blemishes on the skin, for example. Before I learned D&B, FS was my go to technique for cleaning up and sharpening images even.. and they looked awesome. Using D&B after I had learned it made the images look even better. I learned D&B from this channel btw. Keep up the good work brother, hopefully one day we'll work together.
You can always first do blemish then do dodge and burn. You can correct dodge and burb. BUt fixing high-frequency separation is much hard i think. You can fix it by masking it out ofcourse.
After a looooong time of trying I decided to do FS on normal Portraits ( or a small amount of D&B there ), unpaid shoots and if the person isn so close to the camera. When I do Beauty Images I do D&B and I deliver only one picture.
yes!! you made the mixer brush tool popular... at least, i started using it after seeing ur tutorial . also, thanks for the cleaning background tutorial, has made my work flow much easier
Consider a opening PAETRON account... Puuttinng some really high end masterclass content there... Over time I think it's. More advantageous than even physical classes...
Really enjoy watching your tutorial especially the dark skinned series cos it is hard to see good tutorial on dark skinned models on this video i just watched i think to me frequency separation works better for me or may be because it is simple unlike dodge and burn, any way you upload good stuff and it is helping a lot of up coming people like me
If you practice very well, why not? I started with the trackpad on my laptop. But I'll advice you get a cheap graphics tablet for a start down the line
i a newbe to photography and ive come to love your work and it has inpired my growth. i love D$B but im not confident in it so i go for FS hoping to grow to a level where i'll be more confident using D$B
I have some issue with frequency separation. All my pictures stay blurry after I do apply image .I have to add a layer mask to remove the blur on the eyes . Can someone please give me some advise.. thank you
Means you're applying too much Gaus. blur on the underlying image. Zoom in to the image in the gaussian blur window and look for the most detailed part of the skin (mostly under the eyes/just above the cheeks) then apply the blur until the details smoothen out. After that you can apply your top image.
I stopped using the lasso tool method of FS a while back and stick to the clone stamp tool which works great. The mixer brush is somewhat hard for me to get
I use both on every image. I love the speed of frequency separation but love the accuracy of D&B. That said I hate both as well LOL for different reasons.
very beautiful video. I love dodg and burn. It's a very good technique. But I had the chance to work in Canada and Africa. sometimes the quality of the skin makes it necessary to use the separation of frequency. it happens to me to mix both. 90% D & B and 10% FS.
I want to work in Canada too! 😭😭Lool! This is a really valid point. Because of how the skin is here and no disrespect to people here (It's the weather and the environment) frequency separation is almost a must.
That’s the thing, d&b keeps the image more realistic to me, while FS has a more “artistic” look. Just started retouching on Ps 2-3 months ago, my images look smoother but kinda artistic as well (an effect i don’t always need)
Great video sir. Small side request : Could you attach links to download raw files of your photos in the descriptions of your bts or retouching videos? It'd provide us viewers with access to sort of a different dimension to your work and we could practice our retouching with them and get better too. Cheers
Due to issues of just putting out people's images I cannot do that without compensating them. I'm working on some paid content which will involve alot of RAW files for practice. If it's something you are interested in then stick around. Thanks for watching and being a part of this channel.
I mostly use frequency separation and use doge & burn sometimes. But yea, you’re right, dodge & burn is hard. I need to watch more tutorials on it for sure.
Usually I follow what you're saying, but bruh...this was MUCH ado about NOTHING. I use dodge and burn on a layer underneath texture layer in frequency separation. They work hand-in-hand and/or separately. Mastery of both skills are necessary for your retouching toolbox though.
Sorry if you feel the video wasn't necessary. Most people use either the Dodge and Burn technique or FS to smoothing skin. I for one never used Dodge and Burn that way, I only used frequency separation until early this year. It might not have been a useful video to you but I'm sure it's helped someone out there. Thank you for following the channel and I appreciate your comment and contribution 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Awesome vid ! Learnt that mixer brush technique as well, check out the video on my channel to see how it work if you like. But I rather use freq sep & d&b on the image to keep the detail & texture etc

Would LOVED to have seen a comparison of the two techniques done to the same image!!!!
Correct me if I'm wrong....

I actually use both. I use FS first then switch to dodge and burn for extra pop
Yeah. don't they do completely different things.

I just learnt dodge and burn,it's an awesome method of retouching, but i think some skin tones require a combination of both
Same!

I pretty much use frequency separation all the time, but I love how less destructive Dodge and burn is...
It's non destructive but it takes forever! Lol
After a looooong time of trying I decided to do FS on normal Portraits ( or a small amount of D&B there ), unpaid shoots and if the person isn so close to the camera. When I do Beauty Images I do D&B and I deliver only one picture.

Good day sir... Please can you put out a video of you using Dodge and burn to retouch an image 🙏🙏
Awesome Video Boss...
Love the consistency as usual
We're definitely going forward with this channel
THANK YOU!
Hmm Prince, when are you holding a dodge and burn masterclass, I'd love to attend
No problem. I have no plans at the moment but I'll out it out once I make up my mind

Thank you Marv!
Please do a tutorial on how retouch with dodge and burn, it will help alot out here
I stopped using the lasso tool method of FS a while back and stick to the clone stamp tool which works great. The mixer brush is somewhat hard for me to get
Am lost bro...
I use the two aways. If am to use Dodge and Burn how do I now mix the skin color in Low frequency, please help me.
Dodge and Burn is a different technique entirely from frequency separation.
i was hoping you were going to show some examples
I use both on every image. I love the speed of frequency separation but love the accuracy of D&B. That said I hate both as well LOL for different reasons.
Lmao! Retouching can be fun and stressful at the same time

Hello, thanks for leaving a comment. You can always reduce the opacity of the FS layer to get a better look.

Love DB!
And that's all you use?
Prince Meyson for beauty about 70% of the time I finish with it depending on the skin & finish with fs the other 30%
@@felixezema1203 ahh nice...I thought people picked one over the other.
I destroyed Skin texture with Fs so i use D&B
It takes me 15-30 minutes to edit an image. And I started using D&B because of you lol, though I mix it with FS. (D&B 80% FS 20%)
15 minutes?? You are the real MVP
Prince Meyson people with good skin make it easy for me lol, plus I don’t retouch beauty portraits, so less work.
@@tistagreat ohhh...I understand. For me it takes at least 1hr
I use FS and finish it With DB curves
At last. Who else liked before watching?
YOU ARE AMAZING
You too!
Good
I wan learn work
tnx bro now i stud dodg # burn
Since I use frequency separation that's better for me
Lol exactly. Love the spirit
i thought i was the only see that local doge and burn took too much time
It takes forever lol
It takes me days,i used mouse for dodge and burn so it's not that easy
You need a Wacom! Or a graphics tablet. Just get a cheap one
Still trying to figure Dodge & Burn out though...hundreds of videos later :(

All talking head? Zero examples? Wow. Keep up the good work.
Showing examples while talking would have helped this video.
Thanks for the feedback. Still working on creating better content 🙏🏿🙏🏿
I'm sure if there happens to be a new method, dodge and burn will become less useful or not as good just as how fs has become. Lol
Dodge and Burn has been there for a long time and it'll always be relevant. That's what I think.
the video we are not worthy of
Background music is an unnecessary distraction.
you look like the kid from Ice age
Lmao
